In the 28th episode of the Digitalization Tech Talks podcast, we talk about how important it is for process plants to have a strong reference architecture. Standalone services and applications are no longer enough to make you competitive, so it’s become increasingly critical to create a foundational structure that ties them all together. A reference architecture serves as the backbone of your data transfer between the process manufacturing equipment that produces the data and the system that will be used to analyze it.
Joining your two Siemens digitalization experts and hosts, Don Mack and Jonas Norinder, for this important discussion is Alex Pfalzgraf, a digital transformation consultant with Siemens and a repeat guest on this podcast. Alex has spearheaded and been involved in numerous consulting projects focused on helping companies kickstart their digital transformation journey.

Sustainability… It is as prevalent a topic in the process industries as it is anywhere in the world today. In this episode of Digitalization Tech Talks we discuss the topic of energy sustainability and explore how process analytics can be used as part of a digitalization strategy to assist manufacturers in their transition to net zero. This is possible using process analytical measurement devices, such as gas chromatographs, oxygen analyzers, and environmental emission monitoring systems, that collect data that can be analyzed through digitalization tools to generate important KPIs related to maintenance, reliability, and calibration and displayed in a dashboard format that alerts plant personnel when action is needed. Additionally, data from a company’s fleet of plants can be combined for a single overall corporate-wide analysis.

Developed by the User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries (NAMUR), MTP, or module type package, provides a framework for standardized equipment data models and description language to streamline interoperability.
In practical terms, MTP enables integration of DCS and PLC-based systems more easily. The objectives of MTP are to reduce the time and cost to integrate distributed process and reliability assets and equipment, help accelerate time to market, simplify fulfillment of individualized customer requirements, and improve scalability and flexibility. As MTP continues to evolve, organizations will benefit from interoperability between DCS systems and PLC systems, and asset management for monitoring your assets' health using a variety of available smart digital apps.

The introduction of digital technologies is helping the process industries do things better, faster and more efficiently. It’s also creating new challenges for companies as they strive to become digital enterprises by fully incorporating these technologies into all aspects of their operations.
For example, if a deployed solution doesn’t work as intended right out of the gate, any benefits derived from the implementation can be negatively impacted. This is why it’s critical to think about ways to keep your digital enterprise up and running once it’s off the ground. In fact, this step is almost as important as deciding to start on the digitalization journey in the first place.
Join us for the 24th episode of Digitalization Tech Talks, where Siemens digitalization experts Jonas Norinder and Don Mack explore how to care for your digital enterprise using new and innovative approaches. Our special guest is Sajeeve Kalarickal, who is Automation Services Portfolio Manager for Siemens Digital Enterprise Services.
Sajeeve discusses why services are an important part of the digital transformation in process automation, how companies can reduce training time by up to 50% with 3D virtual training, how to address the industrial skills gap, and more.

Companies in the process industries have a constant focus on improving the safety and situational awareness of operators in the field. At the same time, using multiple systems increases the risk of disconnected, incompatible, or outdated information. By implementing connected worker solutions, field workers can gain easy access to the information they need to efficiently execute their job responsibilities providing capabilities such as navigation to the corresponding asset and access to contextual information including the asset's condition, maintenance history, etc. Join us for the 23rd episode of Digitalization Tech Talks hosted by Jonas Norinder and Don Mack during which we cover the topic “Connected Worker - The next level of digitalization in the field begins”. Our guest is Carlos Alves, Director of Business Development within Siemens Digital Industries Software North America. The concept of the “golden batch” has been around for a long time. With artificial intelligence, however, it is now possible to more easily identify the characteristics of that coveted golden batch so that it can be more easily reproduced repeatedly and at the highest quality. Methods have even been developed that enable detection of negative trends on running batches so that they can be saved rather than being scrapped! Process modeling, mostly in the form of process simulation, has been a key tool in the process industries for many decades. Traditionally this has been for offline applications such as front-end engineering design and control system design. But the usage of process modeling has expanded as it is now possible to implement online plant models that contain deep process knowledge; the models are connected to real-time data on operational plants. These so-called digital applications can operate at a unit level, a plant level, a site level, and even a multi-site level, providing significant new information to operations and maintenance that allows them to run at an ‘always optimal’ condition. In this episode we discuss the benefits and why this is possible now. We also cover how this is possible, challenges to overcome, and first steps to take to implement a digital application. Having good alarm management in a process automation system is critical to safe and productive process control. Unfortunately, many current installations have significant room for improvement as current implementations often include standing alarms, chattering alarms, redundant alarms, and alarm floods that can overwhelm the operators during abnormal situations, potentially leading to production outages or worse. It’s an alarming situation! In this episode, we are joined by Ethan Cook, Technical Consultant for Siemens Digital Industries who will discuss how to improve alarm management by utilizing international standards and guidelines as well as integrating digitalization. Remote monitoring is an increasingly hot topic across the process industries. This rapidly growing digital technology is providing tremendous value by making access to information more manageable and less costly. This development is driven by cloud computing, intelligent gateways and cell phone connectivity that have become so mainstream and cost-effective that they’re now worth considering for even the smallest application – think easy access to specific measurement points, accurate tracking of inventory levels and simplified collection of compliance data. As one new user (and big fan!) of remote monitoring recently expressed, “I was able to go on vacation with the peace of mind that came from knowing my chemical tank storage levels in the plant at all times!”In this 17th episode of Digitalization Tech Talks hosted by Jonas Norinder and Don Mack, we cover the topic of remote monitoring. Joining us in this episode is our guest, Jack Roushey, who is a Product Manager at Siemens focused on remote monitoring solutions. Control valves have always been a hot topic in process plants because they can cause unplanned, costly shutdowns if not maintained properly. But when do you know when it’s maintenance time? Traditional approaches have been to do it at regular intervals, use the experience of the maintenance crew or opt for a time-based maintenance approach. Today, however, diagnostics and analytics data is much more easily accessible, which makes it possible to move from reactive to predictive and eventually prescriptive maintenance.Listen to today’s episode where Don Mack and Jonas Norinder talk with Frank Fortino about valve monitoring and how it can improve process control, enable better maintenance planning and minimize those dreaded unplanned shutdowns.Show notesWebsite: Apps and Digital Services for Process IndustryVideo: Valve monitoringReference story: DuPont Improves Valve Monitoring and Maintenance with Siemens AppContact us atFrank Fortino (frank.fortino@siemens.com)Jonas Norinder (jonas.norinder@siemens.com)Don Mack (mack.donald@siemens.com)

As plants and manufacturing facilities work to return to full capacity with the new challenges created by the pandemic, operation managers and health and safety officials must keep employees safe while also optimizing production. Contact tracing applications can help plant and operation managers optimize facility layouts and protect employee health reliably and efficiently. By monitoring customer defined unsafe interactions, such systems can help minimize virus transmission and provide vital contact tracing with a recorded history of employee interactions.
