It is tempting to think that the time between Christmas and Lent – the liturgical season called “Ordinary Time” – would be a time of simple music. In fact, this liturgical season is only called “ordinary” in reference to how the Sundays are counted. The scripture readings for these Sundays speak of Jesus’s journey, preaching, and incredible miracles. So of course, the music inspired by Christ’s teaching and healing is no less extraordinary. Hear some of the stunning choral music of this “ordinary” liturgical season alongside host and Cathedral Organist David Ball. Find out more at ChristCathedralMusic.org

Organ Music for Lent

Lent – the weeks in the liturgical calendar leading up to Holy Week, the Triduum, and Easter – is a time of reflection as we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection. All too often, though, this season is associated only with a cappella (unaccompanied) choral music. In this episode, we hear instrumental music, specifically organ music, which could be appropriate for thoughtful meditation in the Lenten season. Some pieces explicitly for Lent, such as some chant-based works on Jesu Dulcis Memoria, and others just in their harmonic feel such as Hindemith’s second organ sonata.

Welcome to another episode of Orange County Catholic Radio, featuring host Rick Howick. On this week’s show, Rick welcomes Stephen Holte to our studios, high atop the Tower of Hope. Holte is the founding president of the soon-to-open Cristo Rey Orange County High School in Santa Ana.

On this podcast, you will learn about a totally unique approach to education that is distinctive to Orange County. By incorporating a unique work-study model in all its schools, Cristo Rey’s mission is to ensure that a Catholic school education is available to students with limited financial resources.

That will be the model of the Cristo Rey Orange County High School, the 39th Cristo Rey school, when it takes on its first first-year class in the fall of 2023.

Welcome to another episode of Orange County Catholic Radio, featuring host Rick Howick. On this week’s show, Rick welcomes two very special guests to the program, Fr. Bao Thai and Dr. Elysabeth Nguyen. Fr. Bao is the rector at Christ Cathedral parish; and, Elysabeth is the CEO of the recently formed Our Lady of La Vang Foundation.

The St. Callistus Chapel and Crypts, located in the cathedral undercroft, will be more intimate than the main sanctuary above, and contain new sacred artwork and burial spaces for bishops. With approximately 11,500 square feet, it will accommodate approximately 250 people and have an altar for Masses. The chapel and crypts are named after the former St. Callistus parish and school in Garden Grove, which closed in 2013.

The St. Callistus Chapel and Crypts’ architectural style is being described as modern Byzantine, with gold colors akin to what one sees in a European church. The architectural firm is Los Angeles-based Johnson Fain, with sacred art from Granda of Madrid, Spain.

Listen in and hear all about this wonderful project!

Episode No. 33: Christmas at the Cathedral 2022 – Pt 1

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! Enjoy this two-part show featuring excerpts from Christmas at the Cathedral 2022 – the very first Christmas music in Christ Cathedral to include the newly restored Hazel Wright Organ! Highlights from the first half include appearances by the Diocesan Children’s Choir, and an extra special performance on the Hazel Wright Organ by Fr. Christopher Smith, Rector-Emeritus of Christ Cathedral who plays some of his favorite Christmas Carols on the mighty organ! Also of note is David Willcocks’s famous setting of Hark! the Herald Angels Sing featuring a rarely heard Brass OCTET (for EIGHT Players instead of the normal five) setting of its well-known brass fanfare introduction.

Episode No. 8: The Music of Candlemas – the End of Christmas

Remembering the old tradition of keeping our Christmas decorations up until “Candlemas”, this last episode of the Christmas season explores the music inspired by the texts and themes of the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, AKA

“Candlemas”. The luminous theme evoked by the sacred scriptures of this sacred feast have been inspiring composers and poets alike for centuries. Hear some of the choral classics including settings of the Canticle of Simeon (Nunc

Dimittis), Lux Aurumque (“Light and Gold”), and even movements from Handel’s Messiah, with some special recordings from the Boris Ord days of King’s College Cambridge, and the incredible Emma Kirkby singing the fieriest movement

from Handel’s Messiah. Experience the organ sparkle with brilliant performances of some of her own radiant music by Diane Bish herself, and an equally brilliant setting of “This little light of mine” by living composer Calvin Taylor played by

Raymond Nagem, Cathedral Organist at St. John the Divine, NYC.

Host Rick Howick welcomes our own Auxiliary Bishop Timothy Freyer back to the studios of OC Catholic Radio.

In this lively conversation, we’ll be talking about the coronavirus, vaccines, and Catholic ethics.

“The bishops of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange fully support the California Catholic Conference’s statement on the COVID-19 vaccinations. After thorough research and reviewing the statement from the Pontifical Academy for Life, we find the vaccines morally acceptable and imperative in the ongoing effort to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

We are hopeful and encouraged by the promise these scientific breakthroughs represent, and urge the 1.3 million Catholics in Orange County to take any and all appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families. We pray for them as we pray for the world.

We still have much work to do, but we now have hope and a path forward rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. We place our trust and confidence in the providence of God.”

including so many classics from David Willcocks, John Rutter, and even Mr. Candlelight himself, Dr. John Romeri. Also during this year that Pope Francis has declared a Year of St. Joseph, discover The Cherry

Tree Carol, one of the only carols to tell a story featuring Joseph.
