Don's Bio

I have over forty-five years of experience in counselling children, youth and adults. I have worked in a variety of hospitals, community mental health clinics and in my private practice, providing individual, group, couples and family therapy.

I have been educated and trained in person-centred, cognitive, narrative, compassion-focused, emotion-focused therapies. In addition, I completed training in hypnosis, EMDR (eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing), NLP (neurolinguistic programming practitioner) and EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy). This broad range of therapies allows me to offer an integrated model of counselling that is most effective in helping my clients to develop skills that will allow them to have better control over troublesome emotions and intrusive, negative thoughts. I am also a Certified First Responder Counsellor and the need for supports in this area have never been greater.

I am a son, a brother, a husband, a father and grandfather of four. I have learned – and continue to learn a great deal from all of these important relationships in my life.

I have lived with chronic pain since 1981 – I have also learned much from that relationship.

"change always comes - we can only choose how to respond"

I am a member in the following organizations: The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, The Ontario Association of Social Workers, The Canadian Hypnosis Society, The Society for Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis, The International Centre for Emotion-Focused Therapy, The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and Dying with Dignity Canada.

Most Diversity Trainings Don’t Work. How Can We Do Diversity Training More Effectively? with Dr. Musa al-Gharbi, Ph.D in Sociology and Fellow at Columbia University.

This episode features a conversation between my colleague Dr. David Zarnett, who you’ve heard many times on the podcast, in conversation with Dr Musa al-Gharbi, who is a sociologist at Columbia University and a columnist for The Guardian U.S.

Broadly, his work explores how we think about, talk about, and produce knowledge about social phenomena, including race, inequality, social movements, extremism, policing, national security, foreign policy and domestic U.S. political contests.

In this discussion, David and Musa discuss the current state of workplace diversity training programs and how that pertains to the psychology of division, identity, common humanity, and how we can practice living in ways that promote our collective wellbeing rather than the current conflict playing out in the western culture war between political and ideological tribes.

In this episode, we continue our discussion of the transformational process of the 12-step recovery program. The focus of this conversation is step 6 & 7 and the principles we cover are Willingness and Humility.

This podcast is going to be an exploration of why the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are so powerful and how they help to transform people’s lives. As an individual who’s recovered from addiction, as someone who’s received a plethora of ‘mental health care’ via psychotherapy, psychiatry, and mindfulness practices, and now as a practicing psychotherapist, I hold the 12-steps with gratitude, admiration, and honour. As with any model o f personal development, in AA, there are gaps, barriers, and shortcomings that often impede people from opening up to the principles and practices that will guide them toward healing and wellbeing. AA is not perfect. Nevertheless, it is rooted in ancient wisdom and spiritual practices that are consistent across many forms of spiritual endeavours. Today’s guest Tony, A is a living example of the life transforming qualities of the 12-step program and we are going to do a thorough analysis into the 12-steps and 12-traditions of the program. This is part 1 of this exploration.

The principles we cover today are, honesty, hope, faith, courage, integrity, willingness and humility.

The increase in mental health struggles and addiction to prescription and illicit drugs in sports is of serious concern to the wellbeing of our athletes, organizations, and our communities. We want to help trainers learn important skills to identify the warning signs and symptoms of deteriorating mental health and patterns of addictive behaviour while providing tools and examples of how to have necessary and difficult conversations with their athletes.

  • How to balance compassion and accountability when working with someone who’s struggling.
  • What underlies people’s incredible capacity to deceive themselves about their personal troubles and how can we relate to them with compassion?
  • How to navigate difficult conversations with our athletes and colleagues.
  • How to support people refusing to get help.

Onika Dainty's Bio

I am a 35-year-old writer living in Toronto, Canada. I have a background in history, communications, PR and event management but none of that compares to my love of the written and spoken word.

I have an important story to tell and I am grateful you are all willing to listen. I am a person that has experienced some of the worst things life has to offer from sexual assault to mental illness, yet I am still standing, I’m still smiling, I’m still here. I want to talk about what I have been through in hopes of reaching my audience and inspiring them to persevere in the face of adversity.

Having a mental health disorder has given me a unique perspective of the world around me and the people who live in it. I am not an expert on mental health and I do not claim to be on the podcast but I have 10 years of experience with mental illness and the knowledge and experience I have gained as I battle my illness will be able to help others. Every topic I touch upon I try to shine a light on how our mental health is affected.

We discuss the journey of immigrating from Saudi Arabia and escaping conflict, to Mahfuz's journey through mental health struggles, and his recently published book 'Project Reinvention' the social timeline of a millennial.

He is an award-winning Candybox Marketing manager and published author.

Mahfuz Chowdhury has a career that he loves and has now added the title of author in addition to marketer. However, the puzzle pieces of his life did not always fit together so easily. Mahfuz has had quite the journey to get to where he is now.

Mahfuz’s post-secondary experience first consisted of a Business Administration program at the University of Toronto. However, as many of us tend to feel, he too had little idea what he really wanted to do while at university. Business Administration seemed like the safe choice.

It was at UofT that he had one of his toughest years, as he was not only suspended from the university with the added weight of $30,000 in debt but had also been processing the end of a relationship with his long-term ex-girlfriend. Not to mention, there was a constant bubble of stress engulfing him – people forever speaking of the need for experience to get a job in any industry. Panic ensued as he realized the only experience he had at the time consisted of serving coffee at Tim Horton’s. Little did Mahfuz realize that these hard and stressful times would eventually lead to better days.

Catch da Flava on Mental Health & Mental Illness By Meredith Charko - December 05, 2018 On Tuesday, November 27th, Radio Regent's Catch da Flava youth radio show explored the topic of mental health and mental illness. We were fortunate enough to have guest Mike Stroh from mental health organization Starts With Me on the show with us as a guest. Mike answered a number of great questions from the youth and had some important and thought-provoking discussions with us about mental health and mental illness. For more information about Mike's work and Starts With Me, visit https://startswithme.ca/

We started off the show the way we usually do when we are introducing the topic or issue for the day's episode, which is to provide a definition or general explanation of the main concept. Mike made the important distinction between the terms "mental health" and "mental illness" for us and our listeners.

The youth started the discussion off by asking Mike to talk about some of the most common forms of mental illness, especially for youth in particular. He explained that anxiety and depression tend to be the most common, and then we talked about what kinds of symptoms and experiences people who suffer from these and related conditions go through. The youth also asked Mike to explain the difference between situational mental health issues, and clinical disorders such as clinical depression and anxiety disorders. We also discussed whether mental illness can be hereditary, that is, passed down through parents and family generations.

The youth also wanted to talk with Mike about the stigma that exists in society around mental illness, and some personal experiences with being discriminated against due to mental health issues. With this topic, we also discussed some of the lesser known mental health issues and mental illnesses aside from anxiety and depression (which most people are relatively familiar with). Along with that discussion, we talked about the added stigma that exists around mental health issues and mental illnesses that aren't discussed as openly, and therefore aren't understood in the same way as more common conditions like anxiety and depression. We also talked about the complicated issue of medication and the process of finding the right kind of medication for mental illness, as the process and results can and do differ from person to person, and not everyone even chooses to medicate in the traditional sense. In connection with that discussion, we also talked about some alternative and more natural medication options, such as cannabis. Mike importantly pointed out for us that no matter the method or specific medication, the results and process of starting medication can be different for everyone.

We closed out the episode by asking Mike to provide some recommendations for us and for listeners of mental health resources in Toronto. One great recommendation that Mike mentioned for youth specifically is the What's Up Walk-In Clinic, which provides immediate walk-in mental health support and counselling without a referral, appointment, or even a health card required. What are all the different kinds and how to find what works best for you? There are around 400 types of accepted therapy by the American Psychological Association. I have my preferences for personal reasons and those I’ll provide once I finish my masters of counselling psychology and become a registered psychotherapist. It is important to note that the most important thing is that you are doing something! We can’t get better unless we are moving in the direction of healing and recovery.

I the podcast I reference Jon Kabat-Zinn the founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, who really pioneered western medical mindfulness interventions and the founder of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Marsha M. Linehan. There are so many other people to learn from, these are just two who I discussed in the podcast amongst other things.

My brother and I are going to explore his experience with psychosis, addiction, mental health institutions, jails, and his journey into recovery and a life he enjoys living.

This man has continuously amazed me throughout his journey. Some things he has done are quite inspiring and I am going to ask him how he did those things while he was navigating his illness.

I want to ask him about some of the horrendous experiences he endured and potentially shed light on some situations he and I have never really had the chance to discuss.

I hope to help pull out insights that can be helpful for families who have someone living with schizophrenia or who are being affected by an illness that results in psychosis.

As gut-wrenching as it is, love is the only answer. That doesn’t mean we don’t have to hold people responsible for their actions and have high expectations of them. It doesn’t mean we have to put ourselves or our families in danger to compensate for their illness.

What it means is that by loving them unconditionally, we keep a connection to their hearts, which is always the place that the healing starts.
