**"How does God change the world?" That's the questions at the heart of this study. Our answers tend to be political, social, moral, cultural, etc.
But David Fitch wants to suggest an answer that is at once much more straightforward, and yet much more deeply challenging -*"By knowing God's presence in Christ [in our midst], we are then able to recognize his presence in the world. We participate in his work in the world, and his presence becomes visible. The world sees God's presence among us and through us and joins in with God. And the world is changed." Important note: I didn't have time to address an important point in this week's sermon. I want to be very clear on this particular point - that while the symptoms of acedia can sound a lot like depression, & acedia often feeds on depression and anxiety, they ARE NOT the same thing.
Please DO NOT hear my words today as suggesting depression or anxiety are just "bad thoughts" or sin. Acedia is a decision we make to stop caring, to shut others away. Depression and anxiety are complex mental disorders that require proper treatment.
If you are experiencing depressive thoughts or anxiety, and don't know who to talk to, simply dial 211 for help finding qualified people to treat you. It may take counseling, or therapy, or medication. Those are all healthy ways we can experience healing.
And always know that you are loved, you are important, and that you are not alone!

In the midst of loss, we search for ways to cope and connect. My father, Rob McLeod, passed away last week. I miss my dad deeply and want to remember him well. But I also want to remember that while he is gone, he is not lost - he is safe in the arms of Christ, and that the promise of Christ is that death doesn't get the last word - "I am the resurrection and the Life," he tells his friends at Bethany, "whoever believes in me, though he dies will be alive." This is our hope, and it means that in the end, Christ is victorious. So this isn't a eulogy - it's just a reflection on what it means to have hope alongside sorrow, to find light in sadness.
The initial chant comes from the Burial Anthems of the Book of Common Prayer.
The Reading is from Isaiah 25:6-9

In a sermon a couple weeks ago, I quoted from C.S. Lewis' essay "The Weight of Glory":
"Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself," he says, "your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses".
I've returned again and again to this quote over the last few weeks, and finally decide to share the entire work with you all. The text is actually from a sermon Lewis gave on June 8th, 1941, and in it Lewis discusses what God is calling us toward, and how that call transforms us, our relationships, and our communities. He talks about virtue, desire, and consummation - all while looking toward the question of what is means that God is pleased in us.
The Lesson for this sermon is from Revelation chapter 2: (26)"And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: (28) And I will give him the morning star."

In the middle of the 1st century, the Christian church faced an incredible challenge. No longer a small Jewish sect, they had become a new religious movement. How were they to live in the broad and varied environments of the Roman world?
In the beginning of the 21st century, the Christian Church faces an incredible challenge. No longer the dominant cultural perspective, it is becoming another is a long list of voices clamoring for attention. How are we to live in the broad and varied environment of post-Christendom?
St. Peter tells them (and us) to live as hopeful sojourners, as pilgrims who have chosen to put down roots and make our home in a new and foreign place - always remembering that, in joy and in hardship, we are united to Christ and belong to God.

Every year, on August 31st, we pause to remember the live and ministry of our parish patron, St. Aidan of Lindisfarne.
This year, we have the opportunity to hear a sermon written in Irish from the middle of the 7th century, only a few short years after the death of St. Aidan.
This homily, called "The Cambrai Fragment", is incomplete, but it gives us a wonderful insight into the worship and discipleship of the Celtic saints. So join us, as Fr. Lee share a brief devotional concluding with this beautiful ancient Irish sermon.

“Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.” Isaiah 1:16-17 (ESV)
Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost. Every year we retell the story of God’s giving Godself to God’s people. The promise of God’s presence. The promise of God’s truth. The promise of God’s justice. The promise that we may be one as the triune God is One.
But we are not one.
I’ve been sitting here this afternoon looking at these faces. Women and men whose lives were ended by wicked men, and whose murders were ignored. #AhmaudArbery #BreonnaTaylor #GeorgeFloyd and hundreds more
We are not one.
These weren’t “individual incidents” or “unique cases”. They reflect a deep sickness in the heart of our culture. A sickness that is allowed to persist because we, because I, haven’t had the courage to speak out – to stand up.
Because, we are not one.
We could be. That’s the promise of Pentecost. God is with us. We are given the promise that God is at work all around us all the time, building God’s Kingdom – a community in which we all belong, together, with Christ.
Yet, we are not one.
Our brothers and sisters live in cages. Our neighbors are denied access to justice. Our colleagues are pushed aside. Our communities are torn apart. And the elite are protected. And the wicked are embraced. And injustice becomes our currency.
So, we are not one.
But God is here, among God’s people, accomplishing God’s purpose. And God is one – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And God continues to call me away from my wickedness, from my evil, from my ignorance, from my injustice, from my oppression, from my predation, from my indifference.
That we are not one is a thundering testimony to the intransigence of my heart.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
If we long to be one, if we hunger to join the work of God, if we wish to proclaim the Peace of the Lord – then we have to get up. Platitudes and obfuscation must be set aside. We need to name the evil in our neighborhoods and in our hearts, and then begin the work of healing what we have taken part in wounding – as we say “in thought, word, and deed; in what we have done, and in what we have failed to do.”
And there, in the work of healing, we will find that we have returned our feet to the way of Christ – that if we will choose courage and humility and set our feet on a path that leads to restoration for our neighbors, we will see that this is the very work of God, to which the Spirit’s voice has been calling us all along:
That we may be one.
“For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:3-7 (ESV)

Here is the Paschal Homily from St. John Chrysostom, along with the renewal of Baptismal Vows.
Blessings to you this Easter!
The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Each year at St. Aidan's we read this homily from the 2nd century during our Holy Saturday worship.
This year, we're not able to celebrate this service together, but as we each prepare to celebrate Easter in our own homes, I offer up this homily for your devotions.
My prayer is that the image of Christ raising dead-Adam to life will stir up hope and a hunger for new Life in your heart.
A blessed Triduum to you all!

In the early Christian monasteries, it was a regular practice to read and recite from the Book of Lamentations each year on Good Friday.
Take a few minutes, and enter into the hopeful sadness of Israel's mourning, and hear echoed there the cries of humanity's hunger for the Savior.
Hosanna! Save us, Son of David!
This devotional is intended to help us transition from Maundy Thursday into Good Friday.
As most of us are unable to take part in a traditional service this year, we will not have the chance to observe the "stripping of the altar".
I offer up this reflection as a way of moving deeper into your Holy Week observance.

The Rule of Saint Columbanus embodies Celtic monasticism. It consists of ten chapters, on the subjects of obedience, silence, food, poverty, humility, chastity, [choir offices], discretion, mortification, and perfection.
Fr. Lee introduces and reads Columbanus' Rule in order to help illustrate an authentic expression of Celtic Monasticism.
