Drawing valuable insights from Mark Brackett's book, 'Permission to Feel,' we ponder upon the multi-layered emotions we experience in our professional lives, and how the term "happy," though commonly used, might not be doing full justice in describing those emotions.

Hello Connect the Dots community!
Welcome back to our 3 Part series, titled "Unlocking the Value of Learning and Development in Business," previously we dove deep into the importance of individual and collective efforts in impacting learning and development within organizations. Heather shared her top 6 takeaways from the keynote panel discussion. Today we are diving into Part 2, where Heather highlights 5 more key takeaways from various sessions she attended while at TICE.
We are so glad you are back so let’s dive right in to today’s episode and don’t forget to sign up for the newsletter so you can be notified when Part 3 is released which will cover her last 4 takeaways.
In this episode, you will learn:
In this episode, we recap five more takeaways from the Training Industry Conference and Expo 2023, including the important question of “Are we focused on the right people?”
Takeaway #1 - It doesn’t matter if it’s fun. It matters if it’s relevant. This takeaway comes from the Learning as a Catalyst for Business growth session, put on by Litmos. Kyile Stair and Ryan Morris were the presenters and they walked us through an example of how learning can help business growth. [10:28]
Heather dives into what this statement means and as a leader what your primary focus truly needs to be. She asks us, Are you looking to make it fun first or are you truly looking at whether it is relevant or not? [11:49]
Takeaway #2 - Are we focused on the right people? This takeaway comes from a session called, How Learning Fitness Lifts People and Employees Up and Sets A Course To Success, presented by Justin Dile from SkillCycle [7:26]
We dive into what an ever learning mindset is and how this can help a larger number of employees opposed to the common path of just focusing on the high potential employees in our organizations. [5:02]
Takeaway #3 - Tell them it’s OK if it’s not perfect. This takeaway again comes from the session called, How Learning Fitness Lifts People and Employees Up and Sets A Course To Success, presented by Justin Dile from SkillCycle [7:41]
Heather dives into what Justin said about the need to continually assess, adjust, and change implementation strategies. When we need to adjust and change it means something wasn’t right or ‘perfect’, so the need to tell other’s it is OK if it’s not perfect needs to be communicated more. [7:26]
Join in on a bonus takeaway from Justin Dile’s session and participate in an activity lead by Heather. [8:28]
Takeaway #4 - Design learning pathways in future state. This takeaway comes from a deep conversation with Brian from ACTIO Learning. He gave a presentation on Eight Proven Practices You Can Use To Create Personalized Learning Pathways. [15:01]
Here we dive into the importance of designing from a future state opposed to a reactive state. What is your learner going to need in the future? What goals need to be set and accomplished in order to successfully predict what your client might need in the future. [16:16]
Heather dives deep into what this looks like, how you can make simple changes when working in a predictive and future state and how changing your mindset will help. [17:35]
Takeaway #5 - LEARNS: Links, Emotions, Attention, Reception, Novelty, Stories. This one comes from a session called Brain Friendly Learning: How To Use Neuroscience To Improve Training, led by Jackie Colbert from Syneos Health. [17:35]
We dive into what each letter stands for and how LEARNS give you a guideline and roadmap that will improve the retention of knowledge from your trainings. [19:25]
Heather wraps things up by sharing how leaders can use the concept of LEARNS when working with teams. [24:36]

This episode is a really exciting one because we are welcoming in a guest that has made more of an impact on Heather’s journey than he probably knows or will ever know. Today we are talking to Dave Stachowiak (STA-HOE-VEE-AAK) the host and founder of Coaching for Leaders, a top-rated management podcast downloaded 30 million times. Coaching for Leaders is #1 search result for management on Apple Podcasts in the United States. With more than 15 years of leadership at Dale Carnegie and a thriving, global leadership academy, Dave helps leaders discover practical wisdom, build meaningful relationships, and create movement for genuine results. Dave and Heather go back
Dave is the founder of the Coaching for Leaders Academy, an exclusive, intensive leadership development cohort. An intimate group of participant leaders work personally with him to develop leadership excellence — and empower each other. His credentials include a doctoral degree in organizational leadership from Pepperdine University, several international business leadership awards from Dale Carnegie, and graduation from Coach U.
Like most people, he’s never had it all figured out. He's been passed up for promotions, failed at launching his first business, and still fights through an occasional fear of speaking to people.
If you want to chat more about this topic, I would love to continue this conversation with you, over on Instagram.
In this episode, you will learn:
How and when Dave and Heather first met over 10 years ago. [3:38]
How the Coaching for Leaders Academy taught Dave something that he never anticipated happening and how it was then the Coaching for Leaders podcast took off. [6:59]
How a frustrating moment in Dave’s car started his desire to start his own podcast. [9:08]
Daves time at Dale Carnegie and where he thought his career was going was the second and final piece that truly motivated him to start Coaching for Leaders [9:08]
As a busy husband and new dad with a full time job at Dale Carnegie and teaching part time in the evenings Dave only had 2 hours a week to work on his podcast. He shares how this was actually a benefit to him and how it helped him not spiral into his perfectionist tendencies. [14:38]
Dave shares how learning how to simply start and try has changed his entire mindset on how he had always done things previously and is now what he intentionally leans into it as a leader. [21:25]
Dave and Heather talk about Dave’s personal journey on how as a new leader what you can do to get your message out in the beginning and connect with your audience. His 3 point strategy in the beginning was to 1) Air his show every week 2) Is the audio quality good? 3) Is it useful to people? These 3 points are still true in his business today and why they should be in yours too. [21:25]
Dave shares how and why he wrote the article, How to Respond When People Are Talking Too Much, for his Coaching for Leadership Plus. [27:42]
Dave and Heather share past experiences, tips, examples and advise on how to keep your virtual meetings on task when you have someone who just keeps talking. Dave dives into how when you always come back to the purpose of the meeting it will make it easier to keep everyone on track as the facilitator. [33:07]
Dave shares how and why some meetings should simply be just for connecting, especially now in the virtual space. He shares a past experience back when he was working at Dale Carnegie and how this affected him and how he uses this strategy now. [37:22]
As Dave and Heather wrap up their conversation they both share their takeaways from what they shared with each other today.

When I met with my mentor yesterday, she had me answer 3 questions about the lay off situation. These questions really made me stop and think so I wanted to put them out there for you. Asking ourselves questions helps us process through the feelings.
But these questions aren’t just for those that were laid off. Maybe you are one of the people that got to stay, which is not always an easy place to be. Ask yourself these questions too.
In recording the podcast, I decided to add a bonus question for points and cookies to help us start moving forward.
*Please note that points and cookies will not actually be awarded. 😉
3 Reflection Questions
Bonus: What is one thing you will take away from this experience and use in the next chapter.
I’d love to hear your answers so feel free to connect with me on Instagram, LinkedIn, or YouTube.

It’s Day 1 of this new world where my job is to job hunt. Oh the life of a layoffee...
Since I left Apple for Amazon in November 2021, I have been asked if I regret the move more times than I can count. So sitting here now, the day after the layoff, I wanted to answer this question again. Do I have regrets about the move I made? The answer is no. I now get to take my knowledge and skills to a new place where I can continue to inspire others and grow my skills.

After almost 3 years, Christa and I finally got to sit down for a conversation. We met at Blissdom in late 2019 and I was instantly drawn to her passion for helping others. She is a project manager by trade, then was called by God to help His girls. Christa started to volunteer with Proverbs 31, using her project management skills to help them grow. Over the years, she has continued to work in the corporate world and build her business. Christa shares how God has lead her through all the twists and turns of stepping into her calling. After seeing so many people online recommend the book, “How to keep house while drowning” by KC Davis, LPC, I decided to pick it up and read it. I really enjoyed her approach to cleaning and organizing. I had a lot of things marked in the book to mention but did not get through them all. I definitely recommend picking up this book physically or e-book style.

Masking. When I started to research ADHD, this was a term that came up quite a bit. Masking “involves hiding symptoms or overcompensating for them. When you mask ADHD, you try to act like you do not have the condition” (PsychCentral). I knew that I had some masking tendencies but it’s a journey to start identifying what is and isn’t a mask.
In this episode, I am covering information about what masking is, examples of masking, consequences of masking, and some helpful steps to accept yourself - neurodiversity and all.

When it comes to things like this, we have to own the mistakes and wrong doings from our past. This is where we grow. These deep thoughts episodes were a big step in my journey. I hope you have learned and enjoyed them as well.

Toxic positivity is something that I had not really heard of until the last year or two. But it’s something I am extremely familiar with. For me, Rachel Hollis was the influencer that pulled me into this way of thinking and being. Positivity on it’s own is not a bad emotion and it’s one of my personal favorites. When it starts masking the real emotions and your aren’t able to feel those or feel like they aren’t valid, that is where the problem lies.
This podcast is part 1 of 2. Here I am reviewing my personal past and sharing a video book review I did back in 2018. This will help set us up for part 2 where we go deeper into toxic positivity and how we can overcome it.

Finding harmony between work and life is hard. This week we are navigating the workplace as we talk about work/life harmony. So what’s that all about. When people talk about work/life balance that brings up this image of the scales of justice. Balancing your time between the two is just not possible, you would be working 84 hours a week. that’s a hard pass for me. But when you can get into a cycle or flow between the two...that’s where you can find harmony.

You know those people that you see online and you are drawn into their story because it’s powerful. Maybe it’s a story of change or survival or triumph. That’s what Michael Rix did when I first started following him on Instagram. Through the strings of his banjo and the words of his book, he has been able to share his story of going from cult to country.
I reached out to him a couple months ago and asked if he would come on the podcast to share his story. Thankfully he said yes and today I am sharing our conversation. There is power in telling your story and Michael is a great example of that.
I hope you enjoy this conversation. Let me know your takeways in the comments!

It’s the second week of the month so we are talking about neurodiversity. Today, I’m going through an update on my neurodiversity journey. I am still at the beginning stages of my journey and there is a lot to learn. I want these types of conversations to be helpful to anyone else who may be going through something similar. It’s important to know that you are not alone in this.

Recently I watched “The Dropout” docuseries on Hulu, which is about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. So many questions came to mind as I watched this story. But the one that kept nagging at me was focused on the impact Elizabeth Holmes had for the women that come after her. On today’s podcast I set out to review this story and analyze the impact she had or has in come cases. Then I wanted to make sure we took away some lessons learned from this situation. I hope you enjoy this deep thoughts episode.

We wanted to bring that conversation to you. I hope you enjoy this chat.

In one of the last episodes of the 100 Day Challenge, I talked about imposter syndrome. More specifically, I asked if men suffered from imposter syndrome and if they did, do they talk about it. Whenever imposter syndrome comes up in, it seems to be focused on women and how we deal with it. My friend, Tim, raised his hand and said he would love to talk about imposter syndrome with me. We had a really great conversation on imposter syndrome, perfection, and being open about those feelings.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

This movie has such a great cast, great story lines, and great music. It's definitely my favorite movie. The opening monologue from Hugh Grant's character says, "Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around." Such a timeless message that we need.
Enjoy my rambling of love for this film!

Heather

I'll be honest I didn't realize until I started recording this episode how fired up I would get. This episode is a bit longer but it's a subject close to my heart. I am a recovering perfectionist. But if you are striving for that perfect 10, you will end up missing out on all that comes after 10.
Brene' Brown says, "Healthy striving is self-focused: How can I improve? Perfectionism is other-focused: What will people think?"
I am going to put that on a card and set it on my desk so I can read it every day. I have to remind myself how to have the healthy striving mindset daily.

Today we kick off 10 days of quotes and commentary. Our first quote is:
"Just because something is popular doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Life isn’t about doing what everyone else is doing. It’s about doing your own thing. Anything that doesn’t align with who you are isn’t worth doing. Do what feels right for you. You have a little voice in your heart that tells you what the right thing is. Don’t ignore it. Follow it even if that means doing something unusual, something that no one else has done before. Go for it even if it doesn’t make sense to other people. The right things doesn’t have to be conventional." - m. chase

Today is a podcast in the making for almost a year. I was finally able to sit down with Jen Brazeal. Jen and I met at Blissdom in Nov 2019. Jen has such a sweet soul and is on a mission to help others find an unhurried lifestyle. But Jen didn’t get to this spot overnight, she was a teacher and photographer, an author, and now podcast host! She shared her journey with me and along the way gave such good insight on how to find purpose and clarity.
I hope you enjoy this girl talk session as much as I did. It’s one I’ll be listening to again and again.

Today, I welcome April Corbett to the show. She is an engineer, project manager, and an amazing creative. April and I met at Blissdom back in November 2019. I was instantly drawn to her message.
Back in the early summer after as the civil unrest in the US was boiling over, I reached out to April to have a conversation. A conversation about race, specifically. As a white woman, I knew I needed to take a step back to listen and learn. April was kind enough to spend time talking with me about situations she has been in and helped me to see places where I can change. After our first conversation, I knew I had to have her come on the podcast to share this message.
This conversation is long and covers a lot of ground. But this conversation is good, deep, and timely. I hope this podcast helps you see another perspective so we can continue to fight for equality and unity in our country. It’s more important than ever that we come together, offering respect and understanding of one another.

Episode 21: Burn the Boats
Today I’m going to give you the run down of our recent move to Florida. I’m excited to share this experience with you and kick off a new “season” of the Connect the Dots podcast. I called this episode Burn the Boats because essentially that’s kind of what has happened. If you have never heard this phrase or one like burn the bridge, it alludes to famous incidents where a commander would land in hostile territory and order his men to burn their ships. It’s conquer or be killed for them. It’s not so drastic for us, but selling our house in AL and Jay leaving his full time job is pretty much us burning the boats. We were comfortable and our life had become stagnant. We were just going through the motions of life. We were living for the 3 or 4 weeks of vacation we got each year. Nothing else mattered.
I hope our story of change helps you see that while it can be scary, change can also be very good.

Well today is Memorial Day and I wanted to share something that really impacted me this past week. It's the story/meaning of the Fallen Soldier table. I didn't know this story. I hate that it took me 36 years to know this story. I recorded this podcast while doing an IG Live so if you want to check that out head over to @msheatherbdot.
I warn you there are lots of tears. I tried my best to keep it together but this just wrecked me. Sending love to those who have lost loved ones!
The Fallen Soldier's Table
The POW/MIA table is smaller than the others, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or her oppressors. This table is separate from the others and can be set for one to four place settings to represent each service participating in the event.
The white tablecloth draped over the table represents the purity of their response to our country’s call to arms.
The empty chair depicts an unknown face, representing no specific Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine, but all who are not here with us.
The table itself is round to show that our concern for them is never ending.
The Bible represents faith in a higher power and the pledge to our country, founded as one nation under God.
The black napkin stands for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. A Purple Heart medal can be pinned to the napkin.
The single red rose reminds us of their families and loved ones. The red ribbon represents the love of our country, which inspired them to answer the nation’s call.
The yellow candle and its yellow ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet accounted for.
The slices of lemon on the bread plate remind us of their bitter fate.
The salt upon the bread plate represent the tears of their families.
The wine glass, turned upside down, reminds us that our distinguished comrades cannot be with us to drink a toast or join in the festivities of the evening.

On today's episode, I'm giving a commencement speech for those who are graduating in 2020. So many graduations have been cancelled or postponed due to the guidelines around COVID-19, I wanted to take a moment to help offer some advice for those moving into a new chapter of their lives.
One of the phases I say several time in the episode is "Bet on you." You have over come so much in this last semester of your education. You have grown more than you realize. Bet on you. You can handle hard things that come your way. You can handle change. You are ready to connect the next dot in your journey.

Today, I bring you my conversation with Carrie Grace. I met her at Blissdom back in November of 2019. Her website tag line describes her perfectly, “encourager, motivational speaker, & believer in kindness.” She sat down with me to talk all things speaking and socks. Do these two things seem related? Maybe not now, but they will after you listen to the podcast.
We talked about how she got her start in speaking and the process of preparing. She gave some behind the scenes of crafting the customer experience. We also talked about her new company, The Kindness Socks. The mission she has for this brand is amazing! It’s more than just a sock for a sock. It’s about spreading kindness and giving back in different ways.

Today we talk about the feelings that can come up when made a mistake or don’t meet a goal. That feeling of failing can be destructive if you aren’t careful. It can derail future progress. It can move you from a positive outlook to a negative spiral. But I want you to know that…
You.
Are.
Not.
A.
Failure.
You may make a mistake or miss a goal, but you can take the steps to learn from it and come out on the other side wiser and stronger than ever.
Henry Ford said, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” So let’s go learn something.

Today, I interviewed Jenny Randle. Jenny Randle is a nationally sought-after speaker, award-winning creative, co-host of the Shut the Should Up podcast, and author of Courageous Creative and Getting to Know God’s Voice (releasing October 2020 with Harvest House Publishers). She helps people navigate into a space of freedom within their personal life, leadership and church culture and sometimes a good freestyle rap is involved in the process.
We cover several topics from her books to my journey back to the community of church. We laugh, we cry, and we learn a lot. She brought to light so many things for me and I know that she will help you as well.
One of my favorite quotes from the podcast is “God doesn’t waste anything.” This really hit me because lately I’ve been navigating the calling I feel from God. The reminder that He doesn’t waste anything means that we can learn from everything.

Today, I bring you a show that is a bit longer than my previous shows but I had a lot of stuff I wanted to address. I didn’t have any formal notes for this episode so it was kind off the cuff. This is the real me for sure with all the rambles.
The focus of the show is to make ourselves think about how we are treating our customers. Specifically, if you are a leader, how are you treating your customers. These would be your direct reports, your boss, your peers, etc. I share a few stories of leaders that showed me how I didn’t want to lead and a few stories of leaders that continue to inspire me today.
I referenced a couple of Bible verses and quotes from The Maxwell Leadership Bible when I get into the topic of servant leadership. Let’s be honest, Jesus is the example I think of when I think about serving others as a leader.
Commentary on this verse says, “Leadership is about adding value, not getting perks.”
Commentary on these verses says, “Every leader is a manager whose goal should be to maximize everyone’s gift.”
Yep…those are mic drop moments in my opinion.
