This episode of the Reboots Podcast is about trauma - "Big T Trauma" and "Little T trauma."

Even "Little T" trauma can be devastating.

My dear friend Ada Floyd and I talk about:

  • How she's continually learning to process traumas like sexual abuse and the loss of her twin boys Keeton and Kaden.
  • Her role as a therapist in helping her clients heal from trauma.
  • And EMDR, which is a therapeutic approach that can help us process trauma by rewiring neurological pathways that have been stuck because of the trauma we've endured.

If you're interested in learning more about Ada Floyd, check out her professional bio.

Dr. Benjamin Hardy is a best-selling author who has been read by - get this - more than 100 million humans.

His work is featured regularly in Forbes, Fortune Magazine, Psychology Today and other well-known publications and his new book Personality Isn't Permanent debunks the multi-billion dollar personality profile industry as something of an excuse for believing we are stuck with who we are.

In this episode, Ben and I talk about:

  • Personal growth and change as science
  • How the concepts American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr so eloquently expressed in his famous Serenity Prayer apply to the science of change
  • The role journaling plays in helping us make peace with our past selves and instruct our future selves.

I’m grateful for Ben's time and his work that focuses on the science of change.

Welcome to a brand new season of the Reboots Podcast!

This summer is all about arriving at reasonable happiness - even in the midst of great hardship and the chaos that surrounds so many of us now.

How is that possible?

Through the now-common prayer in which we ask for help in accepting the things we cannot change, and having the courage to change what we can.

There's a constellation of topics surrounding change navigation, like mental health, behavioral science, the 12 steps of recovery, and gratitude.

We're kicking off the 2020 season of episodes with Dr. Benjamin Hardy - an organizational psychologist and writer. He shares insights into the hope of changing ourselves and debunks popular personality studies that he believes tend to keep us stuck where we are instead of believing we can change who we are.

Can't wait to share this episode and much more with you.

Here's the link to 15 Things I've Learned About Navigating Change.

Episode 25 of The Change Journals features my friend Caesar Kalinowski.

In our continuation of our 30-days of gratitude challenge, Caesar talks about how gratitude not only changes us but also changes other people when we dare to share gratitude.

Caesar remembers how difficult it was for him - as an adult - to write a tribute letter to his father because the childhood relationship had been so painful. And how that activity began to rewire remembrance - for both of them, and how it brought profound healing to both of them - and into a deeper relationship with a Heavenly Father.

The Arkansas River in Oklahoma and Arkansas is well out of its banks and thousands of people have been displaced by historic flooding.

A half mile from me in three directions, homes are underwater.

An entire region was virtually landlocked overnight when the Arkansas Department of Transportation shut down all but one bridge across the Arkansas River.

Thankfully, those bridges have been inspected and re-opened - at least for now.

The river is expected to crest in hours - not days. But we are expecting heavy rains and the potential for tornadoes in the area.

This morning, my friend Chris Benjamin - preacher at the West-Ark Church of Christ in Fort Smith - called to check on me.

It's a full hour and then some. We talked about:

  • The preacher who walked into a local bar to offer his church's assistance in flood preparations
  • The luxury of the assumption of safety
  • Loving our neighbors
  • Feelings versus facts
  • Listening to the wisdom of our tribes
  • The value of a HEART Check in trying times

In this episode, Jill shares about how she found Celebrate Recovery, and how working the steps has led to a decision to commit to radical obedience through a series of daily choices that are resulting in a healthier Jill who enjoys close relationships with Jesus Christ, her family, and her forever family.

Cheryl Luke is a minister who was thrust into the 12 steps of Celebrate Recovery as a function of her job.

Much to her surprise, she learned through the process of working the steps that she was - in her words - “utterly broken.”

Cheryl and I totally nerded out on the 12 steps and journaling, but we also talked about the cultural diversity in the Kingdom of God.

We discussed race in America - and why people like me often fail to understand the harsh realities that people of color must contend with every single day.

The simple act of walking across a room might be one of the most powerful contributions we make in the service of the Kingdom.

*Some days I even wish
I had come home in a body bag,
Instead of progressively being a burden.
So please don't tell me
That I'm Lucky, not all scars show.

Tell me instead that I am a survivor.
And you are glad I survived.
Let me know that I am an asset to the world.
Hear my repetitions of grief,
My anger, my disappointments, and adjustments.
Patience as I really try to learn how to live anew.

Then perhaps some day
I shall learn how to be whole again,
Accept my sorrow, and feel joy again.
Perhaps then it will have been good
To have known me.

Rachel Snider has written and published 3 books.

The genre is Christian historical fiction, which requires quite a bit of research to get the details right.

But in her storylines, Rachel weaves in painful and difficult topics, like sexual abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Interestingly enough, Rachel began writing the story before she was ever diagnosed with PTSD and she's continued to write and develop the characters, even as she begins to cope with mental illness.

We Talk With Rachel About:

  • How on earth she has written and published three books, even with three young children.
  • Why she chooses to tackle tough topics like childhood sexual abuse in her Christian historical fiction novels.
  • What can happen when Rachel doesn’t feel emotionally safe inside her own home and how she and her sweet husband Kent are helping each other and their children set healthy emotional boundaries.
  • Plus, Rachel offers up some sage advice about fostering and adopting children.

On this Veteran’s Day we profile a U.S. Navy veteran and broadcast journalist who manages post-traumatic stress disorder, dyslexia, and alcoholism.

Shane is a longtime friend from my broadcast journalism days - back in the late 80s and early 1990s.

Until we hopped on an internet call earlier this year, I never knew Shane had been aboard a U.S. Navy ship that was the first ever to survive a direct landmine hit.

Hearing and reading what my friend went through aboard the USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG58) reminds me that most Americans today know someone who - in service to our nation - lives with the scars of combat. And we never even know it.

A note about the audio qualityThis conversation was the first I ever recorded for the podcast and Shane was kind enough to serve as a beta test.

While his story - as you’re about to hear - is inspiring, my technical skills - as you’re also about to hear - grades out at about a C -.

My audio editing skills have improved enough that decided to work around the bad audio on the interviewer’s side of the equation so that Shane’s story can finally be heard.

Shane and I each worked for an assignment editor who demanded a lot of us and when we felt like all was lost, Rick Taber would tell us, “Do what you can.”

That’s what I’ve tried to do with the technical limitations of interview.

My Uncle HowardWe offer up this special edition episode in honor of Shane and all those who have served, and their families.

My Uncle Howard, a retired and highly decorated Green Beret, came home from Vietnam.

Chief Warrant Seargent Howard C. Funkhouser once wrote this:

Some days I even wish
I had come home in a body bag.
Instead of progressively being a burden,
So please don’t tell me
That I’m Lucky, not all scars show.

Tell me instead that I am a survivor.
And you are glad I survived.
Let me know that I am an asset to the world.
Hear my repetitions of grief,
My anger, my disappointments, and adjustments.Grant me patience as I really try to learn how to live anew.

Then perhaps some day
I shall learn how to be whole again,
Accept my sorrow, and feel joy again.
Perhaps then it will have been good
To have known me.

To all those who have servedTo all those who have served, “Thank you” seems hollow. So, on this Veterans Day 2017, may you feel as if we civilians have accepted your brokenness and your sorrow.

Every day, may we express our gratitude that you are here, that you survive, and that you are - indeed - an asset to this world.

This story shines light on America's opioid epidemic.

In this first of a two-part interview, Mason walks us through a 20-year journey through a chemical addiction that began in high school. He holds nothing back. It’s emotional, honest, and reveals much about the mind of an addict.

He shares his childhood understanding of a god who demanded perfection, and how that metastasized into full-blown self-loathing and rejection of a Creator responsible for the pain in his life and those he loved.

Mason shares about recovery programs, especially Narcotics Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery.

This pop up podcast celebrates the growth of entrepreneurship in our home base of Fort Smith, Arkansas - inspired by The Unexpected.

The arts, music, and mural festival has been featured in Afar, a global travel magazine that recently recognized Fort Smith - a community of approximately 80,000 on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border - as one of 8 surprizing cities with amazing street art.

This was our first effort at collecting sound in a crowded, noisy location. We learned a lot about our new mobile audio gear and promise to deliver better sound next time out. There’s nothing like overmodulating an interview with a sound pro like Grant Thomas at The Soul Collective to get your attention. Yikes!

Even so, what our guests said at the HEM Apparel launch party still rings true.

R004:When Grief is Your Story - Ada FloydJune 15, 2017

Five children, four pregnancies, three living children, two broken parents, one God.

Ada excels at math. Years after the loss of twin boys, the formula of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 still tumbles in her mind. This sequence of digits symbolizes grief, joy, a marriage that has beaten the infinitesimal odds, and the comfort of a God she couldn’t believe existed, yet raged against. In this interview, Ada shares poignant moments of hope and defeat as she fights for her premature sons and against an unfair God. She takes us through her journey toward a career that forces her to revisit grief regularly, and she explains how a broken, imperfect and leaky vessel brought her back to faith and a life of helping others find light in profound darkness.
