Eph. 6:10-12 In verse 10 Paul begins to conclude his letter to the Ephesians. His words sound like a pre-battle speech. It begins with a charge to be strong, not in one’s own power, but in the mighty power of the Lord. We are told to suit up with the full armor of God. The apostle will reiterate this in a few verses, saying again, "put on the full armor." The reason for this armor is also given in theses verses. Our enemy is identified, not as flesh and blood, but rulers, authorities, powers and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.
How can you be strong in "His mighty power?"
When have you recognized the power of the enemy?
Eph. 6:13-17 In the next verses the writer gives another challenge in two sentences, he says to stand 3 different times. Paul then lists the armor that should be worn: The belt of truth
The breast plate of righteousness
Feet fitted with readiness of the gospel of peace
Shield of faith
Helmet of salvation
Sword of the spirit/word of God
Eph. 6:18-20 Having put on the full armor of God, Paul says to pray in the spirit using all types of prayer and requests in all situations. He says to pray for one another and also ask that he himself be remembered in prayer. The apostle asks and repeats a request that prayer be given for him to speak the right words fearlessly. He points out again that he is an ambassador in chains.
How often do you pray for fellow Christ followers? What about spiritual leaders?
How important is it to have the right words?
Food for thought: If our battle isn't against flesh and blood, then it happens in two places. The battle is in the spiritual realm and in our minds. This week, what thoughts do you need to fight against until you take them captive?

Ephesians pt. X Eph. 5:21- 6:9
Eph. 5:21-24 Continuing with his theme from verse 1 of "walking in the way of love just as Christ loved us,” In verse 21 Paul begins a discourse on submission. He says that as disciples we should submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Then he begins to address family relationships saying that wives should submit to their husbands. Paul points out that the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church. The Greek word for submission here is hupotasso. It means to subordinate to, or to come under. One should note that the challenge to submit is directed to the wife. The husband has no role in her submission.
Why is submission to one another so hard?
Does a wife's submission mean blind obedience? How does society conflict with the biblical mandate of submission?
Eph. 5: 25-33 Husbands aren't let off the hook here but are perhaps given the greater responsibility. They are called to love their wives just as Christ loved the church. Paul goes on to describe how Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. He also commands that husbands should love their wives just as they love their own bodies. There is a reciprocal relationship pointed out here that might be summed in verse 33 where the apostle says husbands love your wife and wives respect your husband.
Can you see a man's need for respect?
Do you understand the beauty of a woman who is loved like Christ loved the church?
Eph. 6: 1-9 The next relationship Paul addresses is the one between children and parents. He admonishes children to obey their parents and reminds us that this commandment carries a promise. To fulfill this command, it helps to understand the principle of giving honor. The apostle goes on to address the relationship between slave and master. One needs to understand that the term slave in the Roman culture did not carry with-it all the horror and negativity that it carries in our society. He gives direction to the one in authority and the one who submits.
What have you ever done to exasperate your children?
Are you a good boss or a good employee? Do you understand authority?
Food for thought: This week think about how submitting in the proper relationships can change your life. Remember you are ultimately submitting to God. He always has your best interest at heart and you can trust him completely.
When It Comes to Prayer Matthew 6:9-13
1). Become aware of who you are praying to

3). Become absolutely committed to His Kingdom and His will
4). Become able to ask
5). Become automatic in forgiveness Matthew 6:14
6). Become averse to temptation and evil
Ephesians pt. IX Eph. 4:29-32
As Paul continues the theme of becoming mature, he says in verse 29 that no unwholesome talk should come from our mouths. He contrasts unwholesome talk with words that build each other up according to ones needs. He also states that we should speak to one another in such a way that those who listen can benefit from what they hear. The apostle attaches this thought with a charge to avoid grieving the Holy Spirit. Then he follows the challenge by listing other ways that would grieve the spirit. In verse 32 Paul gives us a synopsis of how to be mature and live in a way that builds each other up: " Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Our words hold great power, if they can grieve the Holy Spirit, then that means what we say in private in agreeable company affects the health of the body of Christ. Do you speak in such a way that if others heard they would benefit ?
Do you need to forgive or get rid of bitterness, anger, rage etc?
Eph. 5:1-7
In beginning chapter 5, Paul once again emphasizes the need to live a life of love that is motivated by the way Christ loves us. He compares this lifestyle to a pleasant fragrance. In verses 3 through 7 the writer gives a very stern warning. "Not even a hint of sexual immorality, impurity, greed etc. is quite a challenge. One alternative given for such behavior was thanksgiving . After naming some of the immoral behavior that is not becoming to a Christ follower Paul tersely states that those who live such lifestyles should not expect to inherit the kingdom of God. He even says don't partner with those who would excuse such behavior.
Is it even possible to live with no hint of impurity?
What doors are left cracked open in your life?
Eph. 5:7-20 Paul revisits his common theme of life before and after Christ in verse 8, this time using the example of light and dark. He challenges the reader to wake up and not be found sleeping. It is a reference to allowing the light to expose things done in the darkness. He also says to be careful and wise in the way you live. Making the most of every opportunity .
How could using wisdom this week lead you to making the most of opportunities?
Will you allow the light of God's truth to shine in the dark areas of your life or will you wait and have the darkness exposed without choice?
Food for thought : In verse 18 Paul says, " do not be drunk with wine which leads to debauchery but be filled with the spirit". If you believe in moderation, what happens when you get drunk? Does being drunk lead you to sin . This week will you be willing to consider your moderation?

When It Comes To Prayer:
1). What people see on Sundays isn't what counts
2). There should be a private time and place

Prayer is more about positioning than most people realize
(Eph. 4: 7-28) In verse 7 Paul points out that Christ has given us all the great gift of grace. He uses the term apportioned which is fitting with the parallel that he draws in verse eight by quoting Psalm 68:18. This passage in the book of psalm is referring to the victory God had brought to Israel and how He came down to deliver and returned to heaven. Paul explains that the afore mentioned gift of grace is available only because Jesus came down, was crucified, resurrected and ascended back to the right hand of the father. This had to happen so that he could give his followers the spoils of his victory, just as a king would return from a victorious battle leading his captives and his recaptured prisoners who had been held by the enemy while also giving spoils of his victory. By His grace, Jesus gave us the gift of the spirit from which flows an abundance of benefits. Through the cross He also took death, hell and the grave captive. The apostle further points out the 5-fold ministry gifts given to the church: apostles, prophets, pastors, evangelist, and teachers. They are given for the equipping of the saints. Colossians 2:13-15
Can you see how living with an awareness of Jesus's sacrifice and triumph would enable you to better appreciate and receive His gifts?
What are you doing to be equipped for ministry?
Paul continues in chapter 4 by calling on the Ephesians to be mature. His expectation was that they would not stay where they were spiritually any more than one would expect a baby to never move from crawling to walking or milk to solid food. He uses the illustration of a human body with Christ as the head. While calling for a mature body he points out the necessity of unity for the body to function properly. As Christ followers, we are the body of Jesus. The importance of each part doing its designed work is emphasized. He points out that the body builds itself up in love.
How much do you practice building up the body of Christ?
What are simple ways to build the body?
In verse 17, Paul becomes adamant about a point he is about to make, saying I insist on this in the Lord. He then says, " change the way you think." Referring to Gentile thinking was essentially comparing the regenerate mind to the unregenerate. Paul's insistence was since becoming a Christ follower, there should be a difference in thought and action. Greed and impurity were not becoming of those who accepted Christ. The Ephesians were reminded that regarding their former way of life they were to put off the old self which was being corrupted. They were further admonished to be made new in the attitude of their minds and put on the new self, in so doing to become like God.
The contrast between the "old and the new" is a recurring theme for Paul. What "old way" of thinking can you address this week?
Do you find it interesting that Paul specifically mentions greed as an old, sinful mindset? How much does selfishness and an unhealthy desire for more affect you daily?
Food for thought: In verses 25-28 Paul again gets specific on some mindsets to "put off." He pointed out that anger should not lead to sin. How often has anger led you to sin? The apostle says, " do not go to bed angry." Is there hurt and anger in your life that needs to be addressed this week? Do you need to forgive someone or humble yourself? Don't sleep on it!
