Williams describes how environmental journalism sparked her interest, her paid reporting and leadership roles at The Independent Florida Alligator, and her first story on the impact of extreme heat on unhoused people in Gainesville. She explains what her week looks like covering Florida’s Legislature and agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection and the Public Service Commission, how she chooses and reports stories, and the different types of journalism. The conversation covers balancing policy, economics, science, and community angles on topics such as oysters in Apalachicola, AI data centers, newsroom collaboration, and how data centers and SB 484 may shape Florida politics, elections, energy demand, and public engagement.

They explain how FSU recruits a multidisciplinary cohort each fall for a yearlong experience and organizes 12–15 students into leadership, human practices, and engineering teams, emphasizing teamwork, public engagement, and student-led decision-making. They discuss mentoring through candid feedback, funding from multiple FSU colleges and offices, and the program’s medal history (bronze, no medal, four silvers, three golds), including maintaining participation during the pandemic. Past and current projects include Flowama for citrus greening and Esperance Healthcare, advancing an engineered bacteria solution for fish odor syndrome, now in an accelerator in Vienna, plus Beagle Bioworks on microplastics.

On the InNOLEvation® Mindset Podcast, host Mark McNees sits down with Walt Trierweiler, head of Florida’s Office of Public Counsel (OPC), the statutory advocate for about 18 million customers of investor-owned electric, water, wastewater, and gas utilities. Trierweiler explains how regulated utility rates are set under the “cost-causer pays” principle and why different customer classes pay different rates because of generation, transmission, and distribution costs. They discuss SB 484, aimed at protecting ratepayers from data-center “large load” costs and stranded-asset risk, and how AI data centers disrupt traditional “native growth” planning. Trierweiler clarifies “utility tariffs” vs trade tariffs, describes OPC’s intervention work with limited staff, highlights the impact and limits of public participation, critiques incentives tied to utility rate base, addresses moratoriums and transparency concerns, and urges community engagement as AI-driven demand and governance debates accelerate.

In this InNOLEvation® Mindset podcast episode, host Mark McNees interviews Ricardo Schneider, former CEO of Danfoss Turbocor and author of The Cool Purpose, about the company’s oil-free, magnetic-bearing, variable-speed centrifugal compressor technology that can be 30–50% more efficient than conventional systems and can pay back in under two years, depending on electricity cost and run hours. Schneider explains reduced maintenance, total life-cycle cost, and how Danfoss’s long-term, family-owned culture partnered with inventor Ron Conroy despite skepticism. He recounts early fundraising rejections, Navy validation of energy-efficiency data, Danfoss’s 50% acquisition in 2004, and Schneider’s 2008 turnaround actions, including ending retrofit sales, refocusing on OEMs, and raising prices by 25%, resulting in profitability in 2010. They discuss rapid-restart advantages for data centers, hyperscaler adoption, waterless and closed-loop cooling, heat recovery for district heating, circular-economy teaching at FSU, and donating book royalties to Tallahassee public school STEAM programs.

Morgan Rodgers is a small business owner who specializes in Luxury Pajamas for everyone with her brand Cool Silk by Morgan Madonna, as well as a custom clothing designer for womenswear exclusively through Morgan Madonna the Brand. Morgan started her first business back in 2011 with a family partner at the time and it was called Abandoned Threads where they thrifted and revamped gently used clothing to provide a new fashion flare. This ultimately became too overwhelming for the two undergrads, and they eventually parted ways. In 2019 Morgan picked back up where she left off and started designing ladies’ apparel launching Morgan Madonna LLC that same year! When the pandemic hit in 2020 Morgan switched gears from custom clothing and designed, created, and donated hundreds of custom masks. She quickly met the demands of her customs and gained new customers during this time. Like most Morgan was working from home during the pandemic which gave her the idea for her latest line and launch, Cool Silk which launched June 2021. Cool Silk is a luxury sleepwear line for women, men, and children that provides fashion forward sleepwear. Cool Silk provides Luxury you can see, and Comfort you can feel. Today Morgan is focusing more and more on growing her Fashion House (Morgan Madonna the Brand) as well as researching cooling technologies to keep her Cool Silk sleepwear line innovative, eco, and fashion forward. In this amazing episode, Dr. Mark McNees interviews the Co-Founder and CEO of Diatech, John Wilcox.
Company overview:
Diatech Diabetic Technologies Inc. (Diatech) is a MEDtech startup that implements innovative solutions to enhance and empower the lives of patients, families, and communities impacted by diabetes. Diatech originated from the issues the company’s CEO, John Wilcox, was facing his own diabetes care technology as a type 1 diabetic. John’s story, along with all who are affected by diabetes, inspires Diatech to work endlessly towards optimizing and personalizing diabetes therapies for patients worldwide.
Diatech is developing the world’s first intelligent insulin pump infusion set system. Current insulin pump infusion sets are limited in wear time and reliability, compromising a diabetic patient’s health during the occurrence of infusion site malfunctions. These malfunctions range from blockages, leakages, and infusing into damaged tissue affected by lipohypertrophy. Through the use of AI, SmartFusion will understand the infusion habits of the user and suggest when to change sites and replace the infusion set, helping them get more out of their disposables.

Angela Udongwo CEO and Co-Founder of InnoHealth Dx
The InnoHealth Dx strives to empower communities to eliminate neglected tropical diseases by supplying innovative solutions to communities that need them the most. InnoHealth's mission is to decrease the rate of schistosomiasis to less than 1% (below sustainable levels) beginning in Kano State, Nigeria. Infectious diseases have been a leading cause of death within tropical areas of the world for centuries. Within these regions, the focal point of healthcare has been tackling malaria, despite there being equal and even arguably higher endemic issues such as schistosomiases. Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) have wreaked havoc on not only the standard of living of the individuals in these parts of the world but have drastically reduced their life expectancy. The gravity of NTDs is further intensified by socioeconomic and educational differences between the individuals suffering from this disease and the individuals equipped to address their suffering.
With access to technology at the forefront of healthcare and utilizing cultural competency, InnoHealth will create a more comprehensible prognosis, transferable diagnosis, faster treatment rates, and overall further catalyze not only healthcare but the standard of living in these regions.
