St. Helens erupted with a force so powerful that it leveled tens of thousands of acres of forest and destroyed hundreds of homes, roadways and railways. 57 people lost their lives in the blast. On duty that day was a young helicopter pilot named Mike Cairns. He and many of his Washington National Guard pilots immediately flew towards the devastation and began the incredibly difficult task of finding survivors. Samantha Stewart who is at the 194th Wing, runs a CrossFit gym with her husband, Joe, who is also an Air National Guardsman. Samantha and I talk about her service in the Guard supports her ability to focus on her small business, how they got started and how they are moving into the adaptive athlete space for people with physical and mental disabilities. We also chat about her yoga classes, they are back and at the 194th Wing auditorium once a week. Once the weekly date is set, we will let you know.We also chat with Sgt. 1st Class Tim Thompson who works at 2nd Battalion, 205th Training Regiment. He is the proud owner of Brother's Pizza and Brew Deployed, a mobile pizza food truck. During the weekends when he is not drilling, he takes his pizza trailer to various events around the state and he usually sells out. We talk about how he got started and how his service in the guard helps him with running a small business.

On today's show I sit down and chat with a few members of the Dustoff team over at the Army aviation facility. In October, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Ryan Kennedy and his crew piloted their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter out near Leavenworth, Washington to help rescue an injured hiker and transport them to safety. This is something that they train for a lot but don't necessarily get to do it as a real-world mission. They talk us through the rescue step-by-step, each of them sharing what their roles were during the mission.When recording this episode we got a little carried away and we ended up talking for an hour and a half. So this will be broken up into two episodes. This one will be about the rescue mission and the next one will be about the aviation career field in general and their love for their service in the guard.
Washington National Guard armories are old. Built around the turn of the century and on through the 1930’s and 40’s, these large, cavernous buildings have been the assembly location for soldiers and airmen for decades. Countless people have moved through these locations on their way to World Wars I and II and on through the conflicts in the Middle East. Over the years, we have talked to many people who have seen and heard strange goings on in these armories. Slamming doors, footsteps, voices. In this episode we talk to Lt. Col. Jason Kramer with the 194th Comptroller Flight and Senior Master Sgt. Justin Scherer with the 194th Contracting Office. Together, along with Retired Chief Master Sgt. Jason Witts, summited Mt. Rainier in July. We talk about the training that goes into the multi-day climb, the equipment they used, the hazards of traversing glaciers and much, much more.
For this episode we're doing something a little different. I hand the podcast over to Command Sgt. Maj. Dana Trakel as she leads a panel discussion about Women's Equality Day with several trailblazing female leaders in our organization. Women's Equality Day celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 which granted women the right to vote. Trakel is joined by five other women who have accomplished many firsts in their years of service. They talk about leadership, mentors and just general topics about being women in the profession of arms.
Last year the DoD restored its original transgender military service policy that was originally issued in 2016. The policy prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity. It also provides a path forward for those who wish to seek medical treatment for gender transition. To help talk us through the policy, Master Sergeant Susie Lopez stops by the studio. Master Sergeant Lopez is the state equal employment manager and she fields questions about transgender policy day in and day out. She talks about the most frequently asked questions she gets and we discuss the most important part of the policy -- treating everyone with dignity and respect.
It's the end of May but we wanted to squeeze in an episode about Mental Health Awareness Month. We all deal with stress in our own ways. It's good to know that you are not alone in your struggles and members of the Guard have so many resources available to them. And we want to normalize help-seeking behavior.
Four members of the behavioral health team stopped by the studio to talk about how to reach out for assistance. We talked about the overview of their program as well as breaking the historical stigma for seeking help in the military.
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we invited a few guests to come in and share their experiences growing up in the United States as an Asian American and Pacific Islander. Capt. Laudy Choum, Capt. Tiffany Cadenhead and Sgt. 1st class Lance "Shimmy" Shimamoto talk about the challenges they had to overcome and the importance of observing Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The Army is changing the way it approaches Soldier fitness. Gone are the days of push-ups, sit-ups and the 2-mile run. Now the Army is expanding fitness beyond physical abilities and into the world of mental health, nutrition and even spirituality with it's Holistic Health and Fitness initiative. The program aims to improve the health and well-being of individual Soldiers by increasing their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors.
Capt. Josh Moen is the H2F Program Manager for Washington and he dropped by the studio to chat with us about his vision for the program. We discussed his pilot program as well as the difficulties in implementing the program to a part-time force.

On this episode, Jason sits down with three Washington National Guard Airmen who volunteered for the massive effort to help Afghanistan Evacuees transition to life in America. They traveled to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey where they were a part of more than 200 Airmen working 24 hour operations helping more than 9,500 evacuees continue their journey to the U.S. They worked long, tireless days assisting with tasks like acquiring and distributing everyday household items, hygiene products, clothing, baby products. They helped quarantine refugees who have been exposed to infectious diseases, not just COVID-19, but measles and chickenpox among others. But probably their most important responsibilities they had were the the connections they made along the way. These Airmen were some of the first Americans the refugees saw. The impression that they made on the families and children that were going through a very traumatizing experience, will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Today's episode is a special one. It's Pride Month and we invited a few members of the LGBTQ community to come in and talk about their experiences serving openly in the military and the Washington National Guard. We talked with Chief Warrant Officer 4 Valerie Mariano, 1st Lt. Johanna Lockhart, Capt. Callie Kiaunis and Travis Linares-Hengen, who works in the Emergency Management Division. Travis's story is particularly compelling as he was discharged under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy - a policy that has since been rescinded and now allows LGBTQ service members to serve without repercussions.
This is probably the most open, honest and candid discussion that we've ever had on this podcast. I hope the stories and experiences you will hear in this episode with help enlighten you to the hardships that these service members endured during their careers and still continue to go through. There is much work still to be done.
Some of the language you will hear can be offensive to some listeners.
It's is now June and we are marching right into fire season. That fun time of year where we all come together to fight a common enemy. Department of Natural Resources are reporting more than 400 fires this calendar year already. Those can range from small backyard fires that get a little bit out of control to larger fires that require a crew of firefighters to extinguish. So the dry, hot conditions are ripe for another more active than usual fire season.
I talked with Angie Lane from DNR and Sgt. 1st Class Stefhan Larkin with the Guard. We chatted about some of the conditions that make for an active fire season, what it takes to be Red Card certified and a couple funny stories from the front lines of the wildfires.

The month of May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. Each year millions of people are diagnosed and live with some sort of mental illness, ranging from stress and anxiety to ADD or OCD. Many of our Guard service members are tasked to serve in extremely stressful situation and that can take a toll on our mental health. Luckily we have a whole slew of professional life counselors at your service to help you get the assistance you need.

In this episode Sara and Joe sit down with Brigadier General Bryan Grenon, Land Component Commander for the Washington Army Guard. We visited him at the Seattle Police station where he is the Chief of police for a district. On this episode we talk with Maj. Keith Kosik, the state partnership program director and three members of the Washington National Guard on their experience with the program.
The National Guard State Partnership Programs (SPP) are designed to establish long term relationships in which U.S. States and their partnered nations share best practices and expert knowledge in a range of areas. The SPP is a Department of Defense joint security cooperation program administered by the National Guard Bureau that links a state's National Guard with the armed forces of a partner country in order to build long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with U.S. allies around the world.
The Washington Military Department and our partner countries share best practices for military support to civilian authorities, emergency management, disaster planning, port security, HAZMAT/WMD response initiatives and airport security, among others. The SPP also facilitates economic, commercial, social and cultural government interactions in addition to military-to-military expert exchanges. Multi-level Army and Air Force familiarization exercises provide yet another platform to share effective practices and techniques.
In 2002, Washington Gov. Gary Locke and The Adjutant General, Major General Tim Lowenberg, established Washington State’s SPP to establish a long-term relationship between the Washington Military Department and the Kingdom of Thailand.
In 2017, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and The Adjutant General, Major General Bret Daugherty, signed the agreement with the country of Malaysia, pledging each other’s commitment to build enduring relationships through sustained cooperation on areas of mutual interest.

This week Raven Conversations talks to three members of the 133rd Army Band on earning their PhD in Musical Studies. Chief Warrant Officer Three Scott Pierson, the band master, recently defended his dissertation, earning his doctorate of musical arts in wind studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sgt. 1st Class Steve Friel, an instructor of music at Eastern Washington University recently completed his doctorate of musical arts in saxophone performance from the University of North Texas. Staff Sgt. Joey Castilleja, the superintendent of the Mabton School District, finished his PhD in philosophy in education, specializing in training and performance improvement.

In this episode we bring you the first in a series of shows dedicated to the different MOSs and AFSCs in the Washington National Guard. We will have a guest on who is in a certain job field to talk all about it, what it's like and what people can look forward to if they are interested in going that route in their careers.
Before battles are fought and targets are destroyed, critical information needs to be gathered about our adversaries in order for our military leaders to make informed decisions. The majority of that information is gathered from foreign language sources.
Staff Sergeants David Larson and Kurt Erickson are both intelligence professionals with foreign language skills. Larson speaks Japanese and Erickson speaks Russian. We talk about how they train and excel in their language, the different countries they've traveled to for language immersion training, the valuable world-class education they received from the Defense Language Institute, and most importantly how they use their language skills to gather vital foreign intel needed to make critical wartime decisions.

There are a couple proposed legislation that are making their way through state government in Olympia. Both are very beneficial to our Guardsmen.
One is HB 1137 which would raise Guard state active duty pay to meet our current state minimum wage or an amount equal to the rates established by the national wildfire coordinating group, whichever is greater.
The other is SB 5197 which creates the Washington National Guard postsecondary education grant program. This bill would, when combined with other education benefits like the GI Bill, make postsecondary education free for any state college or university.

Master Sgt. Samantha Stewart is a Retention Office Manager in the 194th Wing in the Air National Guard, and she is also a certified yoga instructor. She holds one-hour yoga sessions in building 109, the 194th Wing auditorium, at 1115. The classes are free and open to service members and Camp Murray employees.

1st Lt. Krosby Keller. He is an Air Battle Manager at the 225th Air Defense Squadron in the Western Air Defense Sector. And he is also an avid ultra runner. Most people think of long distance running in terms of marathon or 26.2 miles. Ultra running goes even further. 50, 100 even 200 miles! Sara is an ultra runner herself and boy, did they have a lot to talk about.

In this show we take you inside the Washington Youth Academy. It is a FREE life intervention, credit recovery program and any resident of Washington state can attend between the ages of 16-18. The academy recently celebrated its 10 year anniversary. This program has quite simply, changed lives. But the program is not easy. They wake up a 4:45 AM, they do physical training, rain or shine, they learn military drill and ceremony, they have a rank structure with platoons and squad leaders and first sergeants. They live there, they sleep there, and they build life long friendships there. They also go to school. There are high school teachers just like your typical high school. They can earn back as much as 8 credits which go on their high school transcripts and can bring them back on track to graduate with their peers. We sat down with three cadets currently attending the academy. You will hear it directly from their mouths what it’s like and how they feel about the school, the cadre who provide the fair but tough love and just how much the academy has put them on the path to living a productive and goal oriented life.
