Josh is raising Produce on an eighth of an acre.
The brewery background gave Josh an organized mindset and skill for multitasking.
Unlike Chickens, the female ducks are louder than the males which prompted the need for Josh to forgo the laying ducks on the operation.

Jason and his family homestead outside of Ashville North Carolina, with 1.5 acres, with a 1700 sq. ft. garden, also raising pastured poultry.
For a homesteader starting out it is too easy to start off taking more than you can chew.
The Contreas family began their homesteading journey when Jason was diagnosed with cancer. After treatment and remission, it began a quest for healthy living.
Recently, there was a meet-up of the North Carolina homestead YouTube farmers.
At the Mother Earth News Fair, Jason was interviewed on the Sow Edible Podcast.
Starting their own Podcast, Jason and his wife have a debrief on what they have done through the week and the videos they have made.
There’s a chance you may find watching someone pull weeds on YouTube fascinating.

Scott’s has doubled his farm size, expanding outside the original acreage
The primary experiment of the year will be to work on deterring the flea beetles
Returning to martial arts, Scott’s feeling in the best shape he’s been in a while.
Looking at the connection between activity and brain function, it’s shown the healthy active you is your best you.
The exercise intensity has given Scott a discipline to be intense when he needs to be intense.
By building the daily routine and habit of exercise, Scott’s consistent exercise has allowed him to get back into martial arts without much of a physical deficit.
Consistence doing the right thing allows us to build compound interest of good rewards in the future.

When we talk about Wheat, it’s easy to get as far as Gluten and stop the conversation. With all the talk about the one factor, we forget it’s not just a matter of gluten. As we’ll discuss today with our guest Bob Quinn from Big Sandy Organics in Big Sandy Montana, there’s more than gluten to the issue.

Together, we’ll discuss how Bob became a pioneer in Organics, what Kamut ancient grain is, value subtracted food, reviving rural jobs, and much more.

After Bob finished his PhD in Bio-Chemistry, he decided to move back to the family farm.
Bob’s been an Organic farmer since before the National Organic Standards were written, originally following the California Organic Standards since that was the state he had been selling to at the time.
With his background in science, Bob hasn’t taken reports at face value and has turned his farm into his laboratory experimenting with various methods in the Organic System.
The Kamut (Kam-oot) is a trademark brand of an ancient grain which Bob has developed a market. Because this grain has had less modification and hybridization over the centuries, raised Organically it may be easier to consume for people with wheat sensitivities.
Because of the way Wheat is conventionally ground and baked, we find less nutrition, higher gluten, and a product which is over-all less healthy for the consumer.
It’s suggested that sourdough fermentation can significantly reduce the gluten content of a bread.

Cliff’s on-farm store is a place where he’s provided the ingredients for entire meals
Without a traditional farming background, Cliff started in the insurance business working in downtown Chicago.
The gateway to farming was Food Inc. and Joel Salatin’s writings.
Since Cliff had 8 acres on his property, he decided to try raising some of his own food.
An initial boost to the farm came when the farm got listed on EatWild’s website of local farms in Illinois.
Not only do they sell food and ingredients at the store, they also sell books which explain both the philosophy of how they farm and how to cook the food they sell.

It’s only after acting, using your words, being wrong in how you describe it, and refining it that you can actually have a theory or principle.

Jill started her blog as a means of self-expression in an area where she didn’t have anyone to tell about her homestead. A way of sharing about what they were doing.
The success of the blog has chiefly come from a focus on helping and sharing value with the readers.
If you want to get traction on your farm or homestead blog, it requires being clear on who you are and how your content is going to help other people.
Cooking is an essential skill for modern homesteading, one required once you start getting food growing on the homestead.

Green City Acres was started in 2010, Curtis learned that he could maximize a smaller amount of acres to have increased production.
Curtis uses the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 rule. The rule is in essence that 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your input.
Within the last two years of being a dad, Curtis has started using this principle even more so he can spend more time with his family.
The interest in farming started with a desire to know how to survive in a worst case scenario.
Curtis has worked to make his life Anti-Fragile, working to have greater upside in spite of any downside.

Nate farms outside of Bozeman MT, raising a diversified Organic grain rotation along with Certified Organic beef cattle.
The major difference between raising Organic Wheat rather than conventional is the lack of spraying chemicals and fertilizer.
A primary component to raising quality grains on Nate’s operation is his robust Crop Rotation.
Utilizing his full Crop Rotation, besides feeding alfalfa hay to his cattle, Nate works with Annie’s and the Organic Trade Association to market his full Crop Rotation.
With an early start in agriculture, Nate was involved in 4H, raising a steer at age 9.
Nate’s second Organic inspection was from Margaret Scoles, who encouraged him to become an inspector.
As an Inspector, Nate balances it by prioritizing his farm because the farming is less forgiving.
Organic Agriculture and food has a large potential in the market place with 1% of farm land Certified Organic and 5% of the Food Market share.

Nikki discovered a love of lifting heavy things in college.
After a case of shingles Nikki took a break, reevaluating parts of how she trained.
There is a difference between yoga and mobility training, it’s more a matter of strength training.
Most of our training tends to be linear in method and approach, burbees, lunches, overhead press, rarely rotating the actual joints themselves.
Functional mobility may not be cool to post on Instagram, but it’s important for long term health.
Sitting is often called the new smoking, we move around much less than we did historical.
There’s some connection between some martial art movement of range, as a sports practice it’s most similar to training mobility on a regular basis.
If you want to get fit in the new year, be intentional about what you’re going to do, establish a goal and get accountability.
Don’t set your expectations too high, look at exercising realistically to your context.
Eat right, pick one part of your diet to pay attention to and eat the elephant one bite at a time.

to running a business when you approach it from that angle

No-Till gardening is simply put not disturbing the soil as much as

possible

On a technical level, there are many ways of being “No-Till”

When you look at an Organic label, you may not know that someone had to visit the operation that made that product or raised that food. These humble people are the Organic Inspectors, and today we’ll be talking to Margaret Scoles executive director of the International Organic Inspectors association. She has been an Organic inspector for over thirty years and has recently been awarded the 2018 Growing Organic Industry award by the Organic Trade Association.

Margaret worked her way through college as a plant breeder
It was in 1988 that Margaret became an Organic Inspector, has celebrated her 30th anniversary inspecting!
When Margaret was 12, her Aunt passed along copies of the Rodale Farming Magazine
Her inspection work started with an add in a newspaper
An Organic Inspector does not make decisions for Certifications, they only report observations to the Certification Agency who makes decisions
While you gain numerous observations though walking through the farm, some of the most useful information comes from talking to the farmer
The International Organic Inspectors Association is a educational non-profit and membership organization that trains Organic Inspectors around the world
IOIA has members in 12 different countries
There are a few variations from country to country, for example Japan doesn’t have Organic Standards for Livestock, and the US Certifies Hydroponics
Margaret was a founding board member of IOIA
The organization started at a mandatory meeting for inspectors, and several of them got together and formed a steering community for what would become IOIA
The USDA Organic Program helped provide a consistent standard at a time when there were many various standards

Our guest today is Mike Dickson, the Fit Farmer from Big Pond Farm in North Carolina. Today we’ll discuss how Mike went from the fitness industry to farming, why ducks are more fun than chickens, how to improve your health and fitness, and so much more.

Shownotes:

Big Pond farm is 10 acres but uses about 2 acres of it, with 1 acre as the Pond and 1/3 acre market garden.
They also raise chickens, ducks, and even a goose!
They employee Australian shepherds to protect the poultry and keep deer away from the garden.
Mike initially didn’t plan on raising ducks, but they have become a favorite on the operation.
Raising ducks versus chickens depends on your circumstances, but for Mike’s farm ducks are best.
Primary benefits of ducks on Big Pond Farm: They are consistent egg layers (even in Winter), they shepherd easier to where you need them to go, and most of all, they are more entertaining.
Big Pond Farm raises Khaki Campbell ducks primarily because they are consistent egg layers (laying 200 eggs per year).
Mike’s background is from nutrition, physical training, and professional bodybuilding.

Cairncrest farm is located in near Cooperstown NY
The farm raises 100% beef, and pastured pork and poultry
Pasture based on certain realities based on the location of where the farm is in New York, there’s a limited number of months were there is pasture available.
There are a lot of options for farmers to learn from each other, but the key is in learning what works in your particular farm, model, beliefs, and geographic location.
The initial plan for the farm had been to start making cheese, but as time went on and the costs associated with cheese production were looked at on the farm, and when Edmund, Garth’s brother developed a dairy allergy they decided against it.
Geese are not always as great as they sound.
Experimentation on the farm allows you to learn what work and what doesn’t.
Cairncrest Farms tested using Bamboo as a fodder feed for cattle
Bamboo has a couple of neat qualities as a feed, putting on more leaf growth through the season, and has an extension through colder temperatures.
Doing interesting things is not just how you get attention, it’s how you develop ideas and take chances that set you apart.

“Primal” is the starting point for the food and it’s consumption.
The farm started with Paul’s brother in law ordering 50 chicks
The foundation of the farm is pasture based.
Within three weeks of posting about the chickens on Facebook, all 50 chicks had been sold.
To start a farm you often need to make short term sacrifices to make long term gains.
“Bugs not drugs.” is a catchphrase of Pasturebird and Primal Pastures, they have not had to use any drugs on the operation, when working on a pasture based system there’s a lower risk of illness.
Pasturebird raises pastured chicken for Wholesales accounts.
The first customer for Pasturebird was the LA Lakers.
In Southern California, Pasturebird can raise chickens all year round.
Pasturebird was on “Billion Dollar Buyer.”
Regenerative Agriculture is more dynamic that merely Sustainable Agriculture.
True Sustainability is not possible, life lives within an ebb and flow, either increasing or decreasing.

Joe was born in Texas, but grew up in Idaho. His profession had always been in software.
CrowdCow is a mission driven company that provides a connection between farmers and customers to get craft beef.
The focus of CrowCow is to be able to shine a spotlight on the Producer and how the Producer raises the beef.
Beef in a grocery store is treated as a commodity.
Wine, chocolate, and coffee are allowed to be savored with the complexities and varieties, why not the same with beef?
Wagyu as a literal word means “Japanese cow.” But there’s one called distinct variety that layers the fat distinctly marbleizing it on the inside.
The A5 Wagyu means that it is the highest quality of beef on the Japanese beef scale.
Japanese culture is much more aware of the distinctive change of beef based on location, breed, and feed.

Jonathan Nelson started out as a lawyer, worked at a bookstore, studied library sciences.
Worked at the Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma as an archivist, and then started working at the WI Historical society when the job opened up.
An archivist is an information professional that deals with unpublished material from various people.
A librarian works with published resources, an archivist works with one of a kind documents and information.
Rather than hoarding (collecting everything), archivist’s cultivate usual information.
The WI Historical Society is a State Agency, that is actually older than the State of WI.
Anything the Society collects is something they are committed to keeping in perpetuity.
Jonathan Nelson became involved in the Organic and Sustainable collection in 2013, because the Society surveyed what was within their collection and found they were lacking in Organic and Sustainable records.

Kunal’s first instinct was to move to Tennessee and enjoy it’s wildlife, his wife preferred California’s lack of snow and cold. They live in California
The reason they chose to raise chickens was that Kunal wanted to have a rural/sustainable experience even in the city.
It was an early exposure to composting in elementary school that first introduced Kunal to agriculture.
After pursuing some vermaculture (raising worms), they made the choice to raise chickens.
