Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
One Sabbath while Jesus was passing through fields of standing grain, it happened that His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” Jesus replied to them, “Have you not even read [in the Scriptures] what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him— how he went into the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful [for anyone] to eat except the priests alone, and [how he also] gave it to the men who were with him?” Jesus was saying to them, “The Son of Man (the Messiah) is Lord [even] of the Sabbath.” On another Sabbath He went into the synagogue and taught, and a man was present whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely [with malicious intent], to see if He would [actually] heal [someone] on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. But He was aware of their thoughts, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward.” So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you directly: Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?” After looking around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did, and his hand was [fully] restored. But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with senseless rage [and lacked spiritual insight], and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Sonship Through the Spirit Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
From Suffering to Glory For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.
Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.

Abraham Justified Before Circumcision
Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. How then was it accounted? And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”
And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”

Abram in Egypt
Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
But the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark.

And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?” So David was not willing to take the ark of the LORD into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household.
And it was told King David, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing.

Power under control, what does it mean?
Maybe in our society we often see and hear the opposite: abuse of power, chasing the hot seat of power, retaliations and wars. It seems that our society has little use for gentleness. But when we listen to what Jesus says, "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth", it seems God does have different standard, a higher standard. So, this week we will continue the beatitude sermon series with a sermon titled "Meekness" by Ps. Heath Flanagan. In this message we will learn: 1) Who are the meek? And 2) why are they blessed? When we look at the news on TV, Newspaper and Internet these days, there are so many messages about conflicts, depressions and chaos. Even, television stars who we thought are famous and must be in peace, happiness and joy with what they have also experience anxieties. Anxiety indeed can become struggle that plague our lives, though it may not seem obvious, but if we do not deal with it, it can be fatal. In a message titled “Finding Peace”, Ps. Heath Flanagan encourages us to learn from Paul’s letter to Philippians Church about how to find peace within our inner community and outside as well. There are three important things that Paul wrote in the letter to find peace, they are Unity, Gentleness and Prayer. We all are not exempt from experiencing insecurity and anxiety, yes, It is possible to struggle with our inner peace, but we have to remember that in our difficult situations and struggles, the God of Peace promises that He will be with us, we only need to humble our self and surrender our life into His mighty hands. What our life revolves around will determine our characters and our conducts. In the last days, there will be more challenges and trials that we might face. We all need to be prepared, to not sway away from the truth and lose focus on heavenly goal that God has prepared for us. When we look at the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, we all can say that they were very impactful. We as children of God need to follow His examples to shine forth and become the light for our communities as well. However, how we able to shine correctly? In these modern ages, where technologies are everywhere and easy to be accessed, there are so many people rising to be on the “spotlight”. They shine and may influence everyone who see them. We are saved by His grace only, justified by Christ sacrificial love on the cross and adopted as Children of God. How amazing it is to be loved by God! However, what after that? But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Most often, a new year is equated with a time of reflection, a time of transformation from one phase to another. Just as we enter year 2021, let all of us continue in developing our walk and our relationship with Jesus. In the first message of 2021, titled “It's All or Nothing”, Ps. Heath Flanagan shares a message from what Paul wrote to Philippians about how are we saved and where do we suppose to put our trust to be saved. In the message we will follow the three “B” in what Paul said: Be Glad, Beware and Be Found. While salvation is an amazing gift from God, which is given not because of our works, but for good works that God already prepared for us, it also means that we need to work out our own salvation. What does that mean? In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote about this matter in verses talking about Light Bearers. In the message titled, “Shine as Lights,” Ps. Heath Flanagan explains to us three areas of the Christian life we need to focus on in order to shine in this world. According to today’s verses, these three areas are 1) The Work, 2) The Walk, and 3) The Word. This Sunday, we begin a new series, “Philippians: The Joyful Life.” The background to this letter is Acts 16, where we read about Paul traveling to Macedonia and planting a church in Philippi. Over the next decade this church grew in love and in faith. While imprisoned in Rome, chained to the Roman guard, Paul’s thoughts and heart turned toward Philippi. Overflowing with joy, Paul sends this letter of thanks and encouragement to this wonderful church. He writes of unity, love, humility, and thanksgiving, but the major theme repeated throughout this short letter is joy. What is joy? Do you have it? Is our church full of joy? As we journey through the letter to the Philippians, may the Lord teach us the joy of salvation, and how we can live a joyful life in every season.

In our sixth week studying Portraits of Christ in the Old Testament, Ps. Often times, we feel like we need to “act” or “behave” a certain way to show God and others our life and win over their acknowledgement in return. For too many of us, the processes become a burden or may even lead us to unwanted results. However, we need to know that God loves and accepts us no matter what. In the fourth week of the Portraits of Christ Sermon Series, Ps. Just like Esther, God is preparing us, the church to be His bride.
Hosea 2:19-20 God will betroth us forever in righteousness, justice, love mercy and faithfulness.
2 Cor 11:2-3 reminds us that there will be temptations that can lead our thoughts astray from sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
God is the One loved us & gave Himself up for us, cleansed, sanctified and present us as a spotless bride to Himself (Ephesians 5:25-27). So from the story of Esther, how can we prepare ourselves?
- Living forward
Isaiah 43:18-21 remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.
Esther was an orphan and an exile. But she moved forward to fulfill God’s destiny for her.
How to move forward? Through Forgiveness (letting go the past), & Trust and Obey (writing a new chapter with God). Walking toward our destiny with God.
Esther means Star. Truly God made her shine to be a blessing to others.
- Total Submission
It is a continual learning that shapes our characters.
Esther not only showed submission to Mordecai, her foster parent; but she also submitted to a 12 month long process of purification.
- Finding Favor
From her submission flows favor for Esther.
Her life is a testimony of heaven’s favor.

Hebrews 12:4-13
The relationship of God and His people is that of a Father who dearly loves his children. In love, the Father teaches His children to trust, listen, and obey. But the children often transgress.
Because of this the Father will use discipline to instruct His children. The children, in turn, would be wise to yield to the correction of the Father.
Make no mistake, the chastisement of the Lord comes from a loving heart. Remember, the chastening of the Lord's hand is controlled and measured by the love of His heart.
For whom the Lord loves....
- He Chastens (Heb 12:4-8)
The chastening of the Lord is not done out of impatience, wrath, or rash judgment, but out of love. Many parents today believe chastising their children is a bad thing and it's not loving. The Bible teaches the exact opposite.
- He Cherishes (Heb 12:9-11)
To cherish means to produce, to cultivate, and to care for. Someone may love roses, but may not cherish them - they don't want to be bothered with caring for them, treating the soil, pulling weeds, etc.
God cherishes His children, and He wants to cultivate and produce something wonderful - the image of Jesus. Through chastisement, the Lord forms in us the character and fruit of Christ.
- He Cheers (Heb 12:12-13)
The Lord cheers us on, "Come on! Straighten up, don't be downcast and discouraged! Learn through My discipline and humble yourself. I will complete My work in you, My child."

Hebrews 12:1-3
We've passed through the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 - men and women who believed in God and lived by faith. Now it's our turn to step up to the starting line and set off in the race that the Lord has set for us.
Hebrews 12 gives us a picture of what this race involves:
- The Stadium (12:1a)
We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, saints of the past, who testify that God is faithful and able. We also have brothers and sisters in the church who have been through difficulty yet testify to God's goodness.
- The Struggle (12:1b)
It is a foolish thing, and exhausting thing for runners to run a race with weights. We are to lay aside weights (discouragements, worldly concerns, religious traditions) and sin (fear, doubt, disbelief). By confessing our sins and weaknesses to the Lord, we receive His grace and strength to be victorious.
- The Strategy (12:2-3)
We have one strategy to run well, and finish well: "looking unto Jesus." It means to look away from everything else and to focus on Jesus alone. Our race is all about Jesus. Let us run to Him, run with Him, and run for Him!
