This podcast will focus on interviewing ordinary people who have had their lives positively transformed by Mentally committing to a healthier lifestyle.
Although this is a throwback episode, its a timely one. Charlie recorded this at the beginning of 2022. Looking back at your year, did you accomplish your fitness goals?? If not, give this episode a listen for inspiration!
As the new year is finally here, Charlie shares with us his tips for making this year your BEST year yet. Don’t have goals in mind? Give this podcast a listen to hear some great ideas on how to set goals that will help motivate you to become the best version of yourself in 2023.
In this month's 10 minute pep talk, Charlie expands on an email he sent out earlier this week where he discussed the common misconception that if you workout, you can automatically eat more. Yes if you workout you likely are able to eat more freely. But, that creates a very unhealthy thought pattern in your brain. Exercise should be something you do. It is making your body healthy, stronger and it will perform better for you long term. It also just happens to burn calories but that is not WHY we do it.
Today on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, we hear from Sara Spivey, who is 22 and from Athens, Tx. She just finished up her bachelors degree in Animal Science last year, and is now working as a paralegal as she prepares to go to law school.
Sara started playing basketball at the age of 3! Growing up, she played sports all year round. In high school, one of her coaches introduced her to Crossfit workouts, which she loved, especially compared to the general conditioning and running she had been doing during her off-season.
However, when she moved to College Station to start school, exercise was the last thing on her mind. It wasn’t until she went home for the summer in between her junior and senior year and joined a local Crossfit gym that she found her love for working out again.
Sara talks about how difficult it can be to find the balance between wanting to eat healthy and having a social life. She shares her tips on how she has overcome this struggle and how she can eat healthy AND enjoy time with friends and family. Enjoy!
Meet Jake. Jake is 34 and recently re-joined College Station Crossfit after taking a bit of a break during the COVID pandemic.
Jake went to high school in Chicago and played just about every sport out there. He came to College Station hoping to play baseball at TAMU, but soon realized that wasn’t going to happen with a shoulder injury he sustained in high school.
Facing this realization, Jake spiraled into depression and a drug addiction until he found Jesus and a home church at Brazos Fellowship.
Jake discusses his fitness journey, the ups and the downs. Ultimately, he feels better when he is working out, which is why he decided that coming back to Crossfit was the best decision for him since he not only missed the working out, but also the community.
Give this one a listen—its one you do NOT want to miss!
Meet Chuck. He is 55 years young and has been married for 30 years. Chuck has two kids and is now a grandpa with two grandkids! Chuck has served in the Army, and was in law enforcement for 34 years. Now he runs a non-profit organization for Amber Alert. In this podcast, Chuck shares how his fitness journey started with his enlistment in the army, and how it evolved into running half marathons, and even a full marathon, later in life. Eventually he found CrossFit. Listen for a really great story from an individual who helps College Station be a safer place for us all. Meet Farah. She is now 60 years old, but emigrated here back in 1985 after getting married. She has known Charlie for a LONG time—she met him back when he worked out at the Aggieland Fitness Dome!
Farah has two adult sons. She is a bio-chemist, researcher, and a pharmacist, which is her favorite because she is able to really help people. In this episode, Farah covers dealing with depression during graduate school, some of it due to the cultural differences between the US and her home country, and how she really had to dig deep and find the root cause of it in order to get better.
One thing she found that helped her was exercise, and this has stuck with her—and now she does Crossfit! Through all the different programs she has tried, she loves Crossfit the most, mostly due to its unique culture. We can’t argue with her on that one! Give this one a listen to be inspired on SO many levels. We are so proud of Farah!
Meet Manny— he is 36 and is part of the Amarillo National Bank (ANB) crew that has been working out with Boomfit for a few months now. ANB is a unique company—in addition to taking care of their employees in terms of professional development, they are also taking care of them physically by ensuring that health and fitness is part of their day-to-day life.
Manny used to be a member of a commercial gym, but one month when reviewing his gym billing to submit to his company for reimbursement, he noticed he had ZERO checkins in the past month. That was eye-opening for him and he knew he needed something different. Now, he enjoys completing the CrossFit workouts with his co-workers and talking all things Crossfit while at the office, too. Junk food and sodas have been replaced in the lunch room with healthier options, and this has really shaped their branch into a stronger community.
Manny is also a great example of how something is better than nothing. You don’t have to start your fitness journey going to the gym 7 days a week and going hardcore on your nutrition. He is only able to come to the gym three days a week, but in the 2.5 months of working out at Boomfit, he has gained 7.4 pounds of muscle and lost 3 pounds of fat! Manny also shares some of the other ways being healthier impacts the work environment. If you’d like your boss to invest more in your physical health, make sure to share this episode. Its a good one!
Meet Will Walker - this young 30 year old has 3 kids aged 5, 3, and 1 and has been doing CrossFit here at CSCF for about 4 months. He has AMAZING video skills and gets the opportunity to work on some amazing projects. In the first few months of joining College Station Crossfit, Will saw great improvements in his health and fitness - he was able to lose about 10-12 pounds, and has also seen improvements in his aerobic capacity.
In this week’s episode of the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Will shares his story from high school to the present, and shares how, despite all his accomplishments, he still wrestles with feelings of intimidation. Listen in to hear how he pushes past these fears to take on things he never thought were possible.
This week on the Building Better People podcast, the coaches sit down to give tips and suggestions, as well as to share their own personal struggles, on all things holiday eating and nutrition. With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, this is a podcast episode you do NOT want to miss. Listen in to hear some great advice on how you can stay on track this holiday season with your nutrition and fitness goals.
Meet Ally. She started the 6 week challenge a month before quarantine hit in 2020.
Ally has been a cheerleader for quite some time, and even went to Worlds as a senior in high school. Growing up, however, she always had bad eating habits. When she moved to College Station for college, her bad habits continued, while the working out stopped due to having a busy schedule full of studying and coaching cheer. This led to her not feeling great, physically and mentally.
Then, she found the 6 week challenge, and this helped change her entire view on healthy habits, and has really made her realize that there is more to being healthy than just how you look. Enjoy this throwback episode, and if the 6 week challenge sounds like something you could use in your life, be sure to reach out to us!
This week we have Abigail Lydon joining us to discuss the positive outlook on life she has maintained and its impact on her day to day life. Abigail is nineteen years old, a sophomore at A&M, and planning to go to medical school. She shares a little bit about her health and the ups and downs that took place. She eventually was able to get to a place of functioning and has been focusing on Crossfit since (which kept her attention out of all the other sports). Abigail has maintained a positive outlook on life through trials and hardships. She always puts forth effort to get better and continually progresses.
In this month’s 10 minute pep talk, Charlie shares an interesting message he has been thinking about while training with his young daughter, Cate, who is just 10 years old. Charlie and Cate have been running a mile every other morning, and like many of us, Cate has had to overcome the days when working out doesn’t seem fun, or the workout doesn’t feel great. Listen in to hear some of the insights both Cate and Charlie have learned from this precious time they have been spending together!
If you need help with your workouts, or need someone to support you in your fitness journey, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We would love to help!
Charlie and Julie are back to give another gym update. Listen in to hear what new and exciting things are happening around the gym this month!
This week's throwback episode brings us Emilee Brown, who has both a CrossFit and power lifting back ground. Emilee was just a freshman at Blinn when she joined us, and to hear someone so young be so motivated to remain healthy is truly inspirational.
Meet Emilee, she is 19 years old, a freshman at Blinn and is pursuing a nursing degree. Emilee’s fitness journey began with her parents. Her mom helps run a CrossFit gym in her hometown, and inspired Emilee to get into CrossFit during high school. Emilee excelled in CrossFit and in powerlifting (she was able to lift some crazy weights). Listen for an awesome story and to be personally motivated!

This month’s throwback hosts a couple who are long time friends of both Charlie and the gym. You’ve heard some of our coaches talk about doing 75 Hard, and in this episode, hear how Kelli and Cliff did it together!
Meet Cliff and Kelli, they are an awesome married couple with 6 kids between the two of them. Cliff is 53 years old and Kelli is 44 years old.
In today's podcast, they share a bit of their history with working out. These two are great examples of staying fit! Both participated in sports and running throughout high school and afterwards. As a couple, they have gone through seasons of being really fit, and times where life got too busy and nutrition waned.
Recently they participated in what they call the “Hard 75 Days”. They inspired each other to eat healthy and worked out at the gym daily. Listen to hear more about the "Hard 75 Days" and for a super cool story of how they support each other and never stop making new goals once one is reached.

This month we will be throwing it back to some of our older episodes that we think are too good to not share again! This week, we’re throwing it back to an episode we recorded right at the beginning of COVID. Enjoy!
Danielle Johnson, 42 years old is a mother of four. During this interview Danielle shares about how much her life has been greatly impacted by health and fitness. It has helped her take care of her God-given body and enabled her to exercise more discipline in other faucets of her life.
Danielle has done an amazing job prioritizing fitness during this time of social distancing and working out at home. She is achieving a great feat, she is doing 100 burpees a day in addition to her regular workout. She has chosen her least favorite exercise and is slowly perfecting it.
She is an inspiration for many, showing that even the most difficult things for us personally can become our strengths.

This week on the Building Better People podcast, we have none other than the goat of CrossFit, Rich Froning himself. This interview was recorded at the 2022 BCS Classic just this past week. Rich is interviewed by Will Lewis, senior pastor at Brazos Fellowship, and he shares a bit about his faith and fitness journeys. Like many of us, Rich tells us that prior to 2010, he would have called himself a Christian, but he definitely was not living life the way a Christian should.
After receiving some mentorship and wise council from close friends, he started really reading the Bible and taking to heart what Jesus says about how we should live our lives.
Listen in to not only be inspired to become better in your fitness journey, but also in your spiritual walk.
This month's pep talk is a re-share of one Charlie gave late last year. Charlie expands on the common misconception that if you workout, you can automatically eat more. Yes if you workout you likely are able to eat more freely. But, that creates a very unhealthy thought pattern in your brain. Exercise should be something you do. It is making your body healthy, stronger and it will perform better for you long term. It also just happens to burn calories but that is not WHY we do it.
This message will be a wake up call for some as we head into the fall season. Football, tailgates, and all the holidays. Enjoy!
In this week’s podcast, we’re shaking things up a bit! We’re sharing an episode from the Its Not All Black N’ White podcast, which is hosted by Ken and Steve. This podcast interviews guests from all walks of life: athletes, CEOs, and regular folks like you and me! In this episode, Charlie is being interviewed by Steve and both get into discussions about their own fitness journeys, their love for CrossFit, how the BCS Classic got its start, and a little bit of everything in between. We hope you enjoy!
Do you hold yourself accountable to good reps? Are you really working at getting to full depth or getting your chin over the bar? When you add that extra weight, are your reps as good as if you took a few pounds off and focused on getting quality reps in?
Sometimes taking the focus away from the quantity of workout and turning it to the quality of those workouts can positively impact fitness.
Another question you may need to ask your self: Am I always staying within my comfort zone during my workouts?
Listen in to hear why Coach Perren thinks this questions is important, and how you can start achieving your goals using self awareness!
This summer has gone by quickly and we are all excited that this month is FINALLY the month of the BCS Classic. We have 750 athletes, and some BIG sponsors like Yeti, Amarillo National Bank, Advocate, Destination Bryan, and Compete College Station. If you are not competing, we REALLY need judges and volunteers, and this year we are really hooking up our volunteers, so get signed up! We’ll include the link below to sign up.
Also coming up in a few months is the CrossFIt Level 1 course which we will be hosting here at our gym. This course is not just for those who aspire to be a CrossFit coach—its a great opportunity to learn more about movements and the methodology behind why our workouts are programmed the way they are.
Julie and Charlie also remind everyone of a few important things to keep everyone safe this August, so listen in to hear some important information!

We all have a lion inside of us. We all have the voice inside telling us, "you can do it". Listen to that voice. Let that inner lion come out. Charlie gives you some encouraging words that will help you keep moving in your fitness journey when you just want to quit. Don't do it! Give this podcast a listen for some inspiration and then get out there and take some action!
Coach Bennett is back on the podcast to talk about something we know by now is very important: managing our time.
More specifically, Bennett talks about the habit of utilizing your time wisely. This may look different for each person, but what matters most is that we are taking advantage of the minutes we have that we could be using to build better versions of ourselves. Bennett also addresses the question: Why do we do things that are challenging to us? You’ll have to listen in to hear the answer!
This week on the Building Better People Podcast, Charlie is talking to Amanda, who is the Assistant Event Director for the BCS Classic. Amanda takes care of all of the day-of (and now, multiple day-of) logistics for the entire event, which means she stays busy pretty much year round! Prior to serving at the Classic, she did a lot of event planning as a military spouse, which is where she developed her event planning and logistics skills.
Amanda has been serving in this role since 2019, when Charlie had the idea to grow the competition exponentially from years past. When she first signed on to help, she had ZERO idea who Rich Froning was—it was only after she heard how excited the team was that she decided to go look him up since one of her day-of roles was to make sure he had everything he needed.
Listen in for some more history of the BCS Classic and to get an inside look into what goes into planning an event like this.
This week Charlie and Julie discuss wrapping up the BCS Classic Qualifier, which all of our members completed if they attended a class within the last two weeks. They also discuss all the many volunteer opportunities available for the weekend of the BCS Classic, which is August 26-27. Whether you can volunteer the whole weekend, or only a few hours a day, we have something for you.
Charlie also gives an update on the construction around the gym—we are so appreciative of the patience everyone has shown as we have taken steps to make our gym a place where everyone wants to be.
Meet Beth—she is no stranger to the Building Better People Podcast. Beth originally shared her fitness journey on the very first episode of the Building Better People podcast which was published on January 4, 2017 — and she is back to give an update on her fitness journey.
Beth is in a really fun spot because she met her original fitness goal about a year ago, and has since entered into a new phase that has brought about a whole new set of challenges. She recently completed a maintenance period and is now in a build phase where she is purposefully trying to gain weight to build muscle. What she once thought was easy to do has proven to be just as difficult, if not more, than dieting and trying to lose weight! She also opens up about her decision to have plastic surgery to remove the extra skin from her 120+ pound weight loss journey.
Beth also talks about the importance of having goals, even if you’ve reached your original fitness goal. For Beth, setting small goals to keep her motivated as she works towards a bigger goal is extremely helpful. Listen in to hear a truly inspiring fitness journey!
This week on the Building Better People podcast, Charlie is here to motivate us to KEEP PUSHING and to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. This can be applied to many areas of our lives, but Charlie is focusing his pep talk on completing the BCS Classic Online Qualifier.
This is a great opportunity to push yourself and really see how far you’ve come, AND by signing up, you are helping Mayhem Missions be able to keep doing what they do best, which is serving both local communities and communities around the world. 100% of the registration fees for this online qualifier go to Mayhem Missions, so find a partner and get signed up!

Coach Robert is here to share his journey with completing a challenge called 75 Hard. Robert was on a mission to show members that the coaches don’t just try to help members eat healthier—its also something that is important for them as well.
After being inspired by Rory McKernan from Crossfit Mayhem, Robert decided to give 75 Hard a try. On the podcast today, he shares his lessons learned—and spoiler alert!— he didn’t make it he full 75 days. Listen in to hear what he discovered about himself and his habits. We think you’ll walk away with some great ideas on how to challenge yourself when it comes to your life habits!
Charlie is on the podcast today talking with Beth Deuermeyer. You may not know Beth, but if you follow the BCS Classic or BoomFit on Facebook or Instagram, you have likely interacted with her. Beth runs social media for the BCS Classic as well as for the gym.
Beth and Charlie talk about the upcoming competition and reflect back on some of their favorite moments from the past few years of competition. Of course, some of these favorite moments include watching Jon Devlin meet Rich Froning for the first time, as well as many other Rich Froning moments, but some of our most loved moments come from watching all the athletes compete. One thing both Charlie and Beth enjoy is seeing the same people come back year after year.
Listen in to hear a bit of history on the BCS Classic. Don’t forget to get signed up for the online qualifier which starts on June 20th. All registration fees for the qualifier go to Mayhem Mission!
Charlie and Julie are back to give us our June gym update. This month, Charlie speaks specifically about the BCS Classic Online Qualifier. Registration is open, and we encourage you to sign up—because we will be doing the qualifier workouts, which are developed by Rich Froning, during our classes the week of the qualifier. All registration fees go to Mayhem Missions, and Charlie shares the reasoning behind WHY we have partnered with them. If you need help finding a partner, talk to a coach!
There is also some exciting news dropped during the podcast that is VERY exciting for our BCS Classic volunteers, but you’ll have to tune in to find out what it is.
Charlie’s 10 minute pep talk this month addresses what happens when we turn exercise into an unhealthy obsession or idol. Sometimes we can lose too much weight, or get to a point where exercise or your diet can actually hinder your health, both physical, mentally, and even spiritually. Charlie shares his own personal struggles with over exercising and under eating, and gives us some questions we can consider to help discover if exercise has become an idol.
How can we use our bodies to glorify God? Charlie sits down with Coach Jacob to give us very practical tops on how we can glorify God by taking care of ourselves, both physically and mentally.
How do you get started with this? Well, first, you have to be a believer in Christ. Without the Lord, we are complete slaves to sin. Then, the process continues with submitting to Christ’s wishes and trying to serve as Jesus served.
Listen in to hear how you can do this through your workouts!
Meet Suzanne — she is another one of our GREAT members who works at Amarillo National Bank, and she is 58 years young. Suzanne has been active for a good part of her life. When her kids were young, she was able to go workout during her lunch time, and even had a co worker that would go with her.
As her kids got older, it got more difficult to stick to her routine, and although she stayed relatively active, she was really missing that structure in her life.
Then one day recently, Suzanne saw an old picture of herself and realized some of the muscle definition she had when younger was now missing—and this inspired her to get back into the gym!
One cool thing Suzanne talks about is the culture surrounding physical health at Amarillo National Bank. If you’re interested in hearing what its like to work for an organization that cares about the health of its employees, give this episode a listen!
Julie and Charlie are kicking off the month of May talking about the one thing that is always on any Crossfit athlete’s mind in May….MURPH.
What is Murph? Well, if you don’t know you’ll have to give this episode a listen. Its one tough workout, but don’t worry! If you’ve noticed the programming lately, we are already prepping members for the all the running, pull-ups, squats, and pushups that will be completed during the Memorial weekend event. Don’t forget to get in your t-shirt order by putting your size down on the sheet near the whiteboard!
Also—Charlie mentions the online qualifier for the BCS Classic, which is now open. For our new members, the BCS Classic is a big competition we put on in August, and this is the second year we have a qualifier as the event has gotten SO BIG. Talk to a coach if you want to compete but need a partner. They can help you find someone. Or, be on the lookout for information on how to volunteer for the event. Its a lot of fun, AND you’ll get to hang out with some guy named Rich Froning ;)
Charlie is back for another 10 minute pep talk, and this one might hit some people hard, but its a hard message some may need to hear.
Here it is:
Your weight loss has not stopped because you've hit a plateau.
Your weight loss has plateaued because, more than likely, your adherence has changed.
Listen in to hear what can cause these so-called plateaus, and what Charlie recommends you do to get back on track!
Charlie is back with Coach Brandon to talk about the importance of having accountability. More specifically, Brandon dives into how fitness is easier when you have friends along for the ride. This could be working out consistently with each other, or promising to text each other about the nutrition you are taking in for your meals throughout the day.
Listen in to hear some ideas—and when you are finished, reach out to some friends and do something together! If you have been struggling by yourself in your fitness journey, this episode is for you! If you are a member here at BoomFit, reach out to one of your coaches after listening to this episode. We would LOVE to help you find some accountability!
Meet David King. He is 67 years old. David went to school here at Texas A&M, class of 1976. After moving around a bit, David settled back here in Bryan-College Station and has now since retired here.
David joined BoomFit right after Christmas—he received a gift certificate to the gym from his wife. He was really nervous about starting; he even prayed over it. He completed a 6-week challenge with Coach Stephanie and has loved it ever since!
David used to workout frequently, but got out of shape over the years. He had fears of starting the process of getting back into shape because of the pain — something many of us can relate to! Now he gets to work out with his wife every morning—they even workout next to each other. Talk about couple goals!
Learn how David was able to over come these fears and get back into great shape, all while having fun doing it!
April is here; can you believe it??
That means Easter is just around the corner, which means we will an altered scheduled for Good Friday and we will be closed Saturday and Sunday. Julie and Charlie also talk about Murph Prep which has already started!
Listen in to hear important details about things going on this month at BoomFIt—Home of College Station Crossfit!
Meet Jennifer. She is 36 and has been working out with Bennett for the past 10 months.
Jennifer came to us wanting to put on muscle. That’s right—here at Boomfit, weight loss isn’t the only thing we focus on. Muscle building may seem scary—but its exactly what can help you get the toned and muscular body you’ve been seeking.
Weight hasn’t been an issue for Jennifer, but she really wanted to put on muscle. Enter Bennett. Bennett has helped her go from 114 pounds to 120—thats six solid pounds of muscle that she has been able to put on since starting a consistent weightlifting program.
In fact, Jennifer tries not to focus on the scale. The number is not the goal. Jennifer works out and is happy with her progress because she feels better. She is able to do things she used to not be able to do.
This is a great podcast to listen to if the scale has been messing with your head lately. The number on the scale doesn’t have to be the only indicator you focus on during your weight loss or weight gain journey!
On this month’s edition of Coaches’ Education, Stephanie is here to talk to Charlie about something important, and something we could all use a little work on. Sure, we all know those healthy habits that we should be implementing that will help make us the best versions of ourself. But, the question is, are we setting ourselves up for success?
Stephanie shares how we can make healthy habits become easier for us by implementing systems in our daily lives that make these choices the easy ones to make. Rather than reaching for a bag of chips, how much easier would it be for us to grab some fruits or veggies if we already had those items cut up and displayed in our fridge where we easily see them and can grab them? This is just one example that she will discuss in this week’s episode.
Give it a listen if you have been struggling to make those healthier habits stick in your life.
This month’s 10 minute pep talk Charlie hits us with the hard truth: Some times people are not achieving the results they want because they are not doing everything they should be to reach their goals.
As Dave Ramsey puts it, “You are the problem….but the good news is that YOU are the problem because YOU can fix YOU.”
“I can’t work out because I’m traveling.”
“I can’t eat healthy because there were not healthy food choices available.”
“I have too many social events coming up to try and diet right now”.
Sound familiar? It’s time to start taking personal responsibility. Today is not about making you feel bad. It’s about motivating you to take ownership, and make your health a priority. Give this one a listen and save it for the future because its going to motivate you to start putting in the work you can control to reach your goals.
Meet Randy. Randy is 54 and grew up here in College Station and played soccer and ran track in high school. Fitness has always been important to him, especially when his kids were younger and they wanted him to keep up with him. Randy loves being a member of both Boomfit and Amarillo National Bank--to him, walking in to either is like walking in to your house to see your family.
Prior to joining Boomfit, he had never worked on his core or did legs, and he quickly realized how weak he had gotten doing his normal fitness routine. After meeting with his coach who helped him set some goals for inside and outside the gym, Randy is now motivated to meet those goals and is excited to improve both his fitness and his eating habits. Listen in to hear how he has realized the importance of nutrition in meeting your fitness goals.
Charlie and Julie are back for the March gym update podcast episode! This week they are discussing the first week of the Crossfit Open and options you have if you can’t make it to the gym on Fridays during the open. Many of us will be traveling for spring break during the Open, so if that is you, tune into hear what you can do to make sure you still get points for your team for the in-house competition.
Charlie is back with Coach Perren for the second episode of our monthly coaches’ education podcast here on the Building Better People podcast. This month Perren is talking to us about the pelvic floor. WAIT! Men—we know what you are thinking. You’re thinking this podcast episode is NOT for you, but you’d be wrong if that’s what is running through your mind. Both men and women can benefit from hearing this week’s episode.
Perren shares some ideas you can incorporate to your daily routine and into your warm up that can help if you are dealing with some pelvic floor issues (and trust me…we all do!). This is a great educational episode you will not want to miss.
Charlie is here this week for your February 10 Minute Pep Talk episode, and if you're as big of a Rocky fan as Charlie is -- you are going to enjoy this week's episode on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast. Charlie recorded this podcast after spending the weekend in Austin at the Fittest Experience, and he is PUMPED up about his fitness journey and the fitness journies of all of our members here at BoomFit. Enjoy!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople, Julie and Charlie give us an update on what is going on this month here at BoomFit - Home of College Station Crossfit. This month we have a LOT going on, including the Dr. B Memorial WOD coming up on February 12th.
Also starting soon — the Crossfit OPEN! No matter what your skill level is, YOU can participate in the Open. It is a great way to see how you are progressing in your abilities as sometimes the Open workouts are repeats from previous years, and we often do them during classes as well. But more importantly… it is SO MUCH FUN. We will be doing the Open workouts during classes each Friday during the Open so make sure you get signed up on the Crossfit Games website.
This week we have a new monthly episode on the Building Better People podcast where Charlie sits down with one of our coaches to speak on a single topic to educate our members and listeners. Kicking things off is Coach Bennett, who is talking about something we will all deal with at some point: INJURIES!
Bennett shares his story of working through injuries and walks us through his recovery story as he shares a few tips and pointers to either avoid or work through an injury.
Meet Karen. She is 75 years young and has been an active member of our gym for a few months now. Growing up in Chicago where there was mass transit, walking everywhere - to the store, to church, to school, etc. - was just part of the culture. Activity was just a way of life. You went outside when it was day light and you came back in when it got dark. Exercise, outside of her regular lifestyle, didn’t become a focus until after college when she was living by herself and just needed something to do other than going to work and coming home.
Karen has kept up with her activity levels throughout her life, including doing tae kwon do with all 4 of her grandchildren. Karen is a great example of how continuing to move and be active throughout your life can lead to so many wonderful things. Listen in to hear all the things she is able to do because she stays active.
If you need a reason to start an active lifestyle, give this podcast a listen. Karen is truly an inspiration!
Charlie and Julie share a little bit about what is going on at the gym in the new year, including new members and new gym swag. Listen in to get the scoop!
This month’s 10 minute pep talk couldn’t come at a better time! As the new year is finally here, Charlie shares with us his tips for making 2022 your BEST year yet. Don’t have goals in mind? Give this podcast a listen to hear some great ideas on how to set goals that will help motivate you to become the best version of yourself in 2022.
This week we feature coach Robert, Bennett and Brandon. Listen to hear how they felt about their fitness goals in 2021 and what their goals are for 2022.
Coach Robert is gearing up for another competition in January and talks about how he likes to view the calendar as a competition season. It keeps him motivated and focused on improvement.
Coach Bennett has aspirations to hit some big numbers in the olympic lifting category. He has been rebuilding his core strength and focusing on squatting. His goals show you the big picture of coming back from an injury.
Coach Brandon talks about switching up his programming in 2021 which helped him hit a new fitness ceiling. He is switching it up again in 2022.
Each of these coaches share where they hope to be in the next year and the importance of goal setting. Tons of great content in this episode!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Charlie gives us a glimpse into the goal review sessions that he conducts with our coaches. In this episode, we hear from Stephanie, Perren, and Jacob on what their goals were for the past year and the progress they have made towards them. In part 2 next week, we will hear from the rest of our coaching team.
If you love what you hear, don’t forget that as members, you can meet with a coach to set your own goals, which as you will hear this week and next, is a good way to stay motivated and actually accomplish what you come here to accomplish!
Meet Thorn Jones. Thorn is 35, and lives and works in Austin, Tx. He is originally from Tennessee, but moved to Austin from Baton Rouge in March of 2020. Thorn is here this week to tell us about his fitness journey, which includes losing 33 pounds in the last one hundred days.
Thorn grew up playing football and lacrosse and was one of the shortest kids in his class until he hit a growth spurt in high school and shot up to 6’5. A self proclaimed big boy, Thorn says he started putting on the pounds when he got into his late 20’s and early 30’s. He had a major gut-check moment the day after his 34th birthday when he woke up with swollen knees and a hurting back after playing around with friends, and decided he needed to make some changes.
One change he made for this fitness challenge was giving up alcohol (and other sugary beverages). If you’ve been wondering what giving up alcohol can do not just for your fitness, but your overall life, then you’ll want to listen to Thorn’s story. Listen in to also hear about the fitness challenge he joined with his friends that helped motivate him to get serious about his health.
Meet Carol — she has lived here for 8 years now with her husband and three adorable kiddos. Taking care of her kids (ages 8, 7, and 2!) is her full time job and it sure keeps her busy! In today’s episode, Carol talks about her fitness journey, focusing specifically on her journey after having children. If you’re a momma like Carol, you’ll definitely want to give this episode a listen! One thing she really struggled with is finding the time to take care of herself, which can be difficult when you’re chasing after little ones and taking care of your household.
Carol also talks about the goal review sessions she had with her coach and how they assisted her in reaching her goals. You heard a little bit about review sessions on the podcast a few weeks ago. Here is your chance to hear what this may look like for one of our members!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Julie and Charlie are here to share the December gym update. This week, we talk all things CHRISTMAS here at Boomfit, and welcome some of our new members who you will be seeing this month at the gym.
First up - the December 7th Cookies with Santa, complete with a cookies, a hot chocolate bar, and of course….SANTA CLAUS!! You don’t even have to worry about bringing your camera - Brazos Fellowship’s own Megan Fengolio will be here to take your family’s pictures with Santa!
They also discuss the Grow and Give Back event taking place on Friday December 10th. Make sure to check our instagram bio, or your emails from Julie, for the link to get signed up or find out more on how you can donate to the toy drive.
This month, Charlie talks to us about goal review sessions. Did you know that all members here at BoomFit can meet with a coach every 90 days to go over their personal goals? These goal review sessions force us to sit down and think about what we are trying to accomplish here, and helps keep us on track and accountable towards meeting our goals. Not sure what you can talk about during these sessions? Charlie discusses a few options on how goals may look for different members.
What a great topic of discussion as we enter the start of the holiday season! If you’re a member, reach out to a coach and schedule your goal review session so you can stay focused over this holiday season.
Meet Jacob - he is 28 years old and is from Belton, Tx, AND…. is our newest coach here at Boomfit! He started playing the violin when he was just a young boy and says it has had a great influence throughout his entire life. He was heavily devoted to being a great instrumentalist, meaning he was putting in 3-4 hours a day of practice, and several other hours of looking at sheet music, researching famous and well known musicians and other things that revolved around the violin. He still plays now, and uses it as a form of worship for his personal spiritual life. Jacob also shares some of the people in his life that have had the greatest impact on his spiritual journey.
To get him out of the house for a few hours, his parents introduced him to the sport of golf. He wasn’t particularly interested in it, but he WAS competitive, and that meant that he strived to be the best he could be.
Jacob’s fitness journey really started though when he was in college and was paired with a suite mate, Mark, who was fit and extremely health-conscious. Mark helped turned things around for Jacob, who had been suffering from frequent illnesses and insomnia.
There is SO much more that Jacob shares about his life —but you’ll have to listen in to hear the rest. This is definitely one you won’t want to miss out on!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Charlie and Julie talk about TONS of new updates — including new members, sweatshirt orders, AND they also share details about the fun holiday activities that will be going on during the month of December. Make sure to listen to this one so you are up to date with what is going on here at College Station CrossFit and Boomfit.
Meet Will Walker - this young 30 year old has 3 kids aged 5, 3, and 1 and has been doing CrossFit here at CSCF for about 4 months. You may have seen some of Will’s work if you follow the BCS Classic; he has AMAZING video skills and also works with our friend Richard Bloomer as a videographer for some pretty cool CrossFit stuff.
Charlie sat down with Michael Streight who has an AMAZING fitness and faith journey. Michael, and his wife Sophie, were in town this past weekend for the Faith RXD True Strength camp. Both Michael and Sophie used to coach here at College Station CrossFit, so it was fun to have them back here with us!
Michael and Sophie started the first Faith RXD chapter here in BCS several years ago. Faith RXD was founded by Becky Conzelman, Michael’s cousin. Becky passed away from a sudden brain aneurysm in 2019 Michael’s cousin, and this weekend we honored her with a workout called “Champion”.
During today’s podcast, Michael takes us through his journey, including how he enjoys and prefers to work out with others which lead him to regionals for the team CrossFit games. We hope you enjoy hearing his inspiring story!
Meet Neil - he is 34 years old and lives in Brenham. He works out and coaches over at Brenham CrossFit, but you probably recognize Neil as the BCS Classic volunteer extraordinaire that he is! He has been volunteering with us for a few years now, and brings a level of excitement and hype that is matched by no one!
Neil has several parts to his fitness journey. The first one - it was all about Neil. The second story started after his mindset shifted from ‘it’s all about me’ to ‘how can I become strong so that I can be strong for others’. Then he moves onto to a part of his life where he realized that fitness has internal benefits that far exceed that of weight loss (or muscle gain) and looking better.
Listen in to be inspired by his story of intentionality and focus.
It’s time for another coaches’ update on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast.
The coaches give their updates on how things have been going in the past month—including their takeaways from the BCS Classic which was a few weeks ago. Perren and Brandon loved it so much they have signed up for another competition coming up in about six weeks—and Perren also just started the six week challenge. That’s right—even our coaches need a little focus and accountability every now and then.
Listen in to hear what else the coaches are up to this month—including how they are training and what they are eating these days. Lots of laughter and fun conversations in this one!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Julie and Charlie talk about what’s going on this month at the gym, including a giant t-shirt blow out AND the remodeling that has been going on in the gym. They also give shoutouts to all of the new (and new, old!) members at the gym.
Julie also talks about the Faith RXD camp that is taking place here in October and the meal train we will be creating to help feed the staff while they are here. Faith RXD is a non-profit, and this meal train really helps relieve some of the costs for the staff members who travel here to provide this awesome opportunity for the fitness community.
Listen in to hear some of the community events we have coming up here in the next few months as well!
Meet TJ Ryan—he is 25 years old. TJ is the Director of Scouting for the A&M men’s basketball team. He is originally from St. Petersburg, FL, but has been working out here in College Station at BoomFit for the past 3 months.
As a kid, fitness was just something you were apart of according to TJ. He played baseball and basketball both until high school where he decided to focus on basketball.
TJ grew up being self conscious about his body and how he looked—something we can all relate to. In high school he started to get serious about working out, and tried out various programs like P90X and Insanity. After opting to focus on his passion for coaching instead of being a player, though, he lost the drive to workout and let his fitness slide.
Now, he’s focused and back at it. Listen in to hear the rest of his story and find out how he turned things around in terms of his health and fitness!
Listen in to be inspired!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, we have THREE Crossfit Games athletes who sat down with Charlie at the 2021 BCS Classic to talk all things faith, family, and fitness. Learn about Crossfit Mayhem, Mayhem Mission, and Faith RXD--3 organizations doing amazing work!
This month on the coaches’ podcast we meet one of our new coaches who is finishing up her training period. Additionally, our coaches talk about what their strategy will be leading up to the BCS Classic as well as what their strategy will be for each of the events.
Since this podcast will air AFTER the BCS Classic, listen in to see if they were able to stick to their plan for Saturday’s events!
Meet Maribel. She works here in College Station at the Association of Former Students. Whoop!
She moved here right as COVID-19 hit, and really struggled at first at finding her community. Once gyms opened back up, she found College Station CrossFit, and has flourished in the gym’s friendly community.
Recently, she found @faithrxd. At first she was just excited about the free workout—but the cool thing about Faith RXD events is that it also includes a bible study afterwards.
Needless to say, her little crossfitting-heart was HOOKED! Maribel shares how Faith RXD and her faith has complimented her health journey, and how the two works so well together.
She also mentions the Faith RXD camp that is taking place right here at our gym October 15-17. Its going to be SO awesome, and if you are on the fence—you definitely need to listen to this podcast!
Charlie sits down with Kyle Boeck, who was able to partner with Rich Froning at the 2020 BCS Classic through the fundraiser with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas. Charlie and Kyle talk about how fun the experience was, from meeting Rich for the first time to what it was like to work out with the G.O.A.T. himself. Kyle also shares how the Ronald McDonald House has personally impacted the life of him and his wife, Hannah.
To win your chance to be Rich Froning's partner at the 2021 BCS Classic, visit https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/bcsclassic2021 to sign up for the fundraiser!
You may remember Jon Devlin from the 2019 BCS Classic. He was the first person to have the honor of working out with Rich Froning, raising almost $15,000 in the inaugural BCS Classic fundraiser benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas.
Charlie sat down with Jon this week to reminisce about this awesome experience and to talk to Jon about how he has grown since the 2019 BCS Classic. If you haven’t heard Jon’s incredible story, you definitely need to give this a listen.
Jon is extremely excited to continue to help raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, and he mentions something he is doing to help out this year’s fundraiser winner…but you’ll have to listen to find out!
This month on the July gym update, Kyle shares some big and excited news with us!
Give it a listen and send him well-wishes!
Meet Farah. She is now 60 years old, but emigrated here back in 1985 after getting married. She has known Charlie for a LONG time—she met him back when he worked out at the Aggieland Fitness Dome!
She originally planned on coming to earn an education and go back, but after 35 years she is still here and considers the US her home now.
This month the coaches sit down to talk about the BCS Classic and what competing or volunteering for this event means to them. If you’re new to our gym or new to Crossfit, don’t miss this podcast where we discuss all things BCS Classic.
The BCS Classic is a Crossfit competition our gym hosts—and its an AMAZING event to be a part of, whether you are participating as an athlete OR a volunteer. The competition is for all levels of athletes—whether you’ve been doing Crossfit for 6 months or 6 years, there is a division for you.
Oh, and some guy named Rich Froning will also be there competing alongside you.
The qualifier is going on this week, and if you are at our gym, you’re already doing the workouts, so if you get that competition bug, sign up before July 19th. If competing is not your thing, sign up to volunteer! Its a great way to hang out with your fellow CSCF members and meet some other Crossfitters from across the state!
Meet Stephanie Curtis. She is 34 years old, grew up in the Angleton/Lake Jackson area, and graduated from Texas A&M in 2009. After college, she decided to go into ministry and got into Crossfit while doing ministry in Houston.
In this episode, she and Charlie discuss how it can be difficult to eat healthy while living on campus. Stephanie is grateful that she had a group of friends who were always active, whether that was going to the Rec center or getting together to play volleyball.
Stephanie also shares about a bad car accident she experienced in 2015 that lead to a difficult concussion recovery. Despite taking time to recover, she kept experiencing strange symptoms wile working out, and was eventually diagnosed with Dysautonomia. However, she was determined to keep exercise in her life as she knew she felt better when she did. Now she knows what she needs to do to treat the symptoms so that she can keep Crossfit and exercise in her day-to-day life.
If you want to hear how Stephanie does NOT let her diagnosis define her, give this episode a listen. This is one you do not want to miss!
This month’s edition of ‘What’s going on around the gym’, Kyle welcomes and gives a shoutout to some of our new members, and Julie discusses what it looks like to be a new member here at College Station Crossfit versus what you might see at a commercial gym.
Kyle and Julie also discuss the Advanced Theory course we are doing this month—its something that if you want to know more about programming or what its like to be a coach, you will definitely want to sign up for this course!
They also discuss something big we are doing the week of July 12—but you’ll have to listen to find out what it is! ;)
Listen in to hear what else is going around the gym this month!
In this month’s pep talk, Charlie talks about how you can’t do this by yourself.
We are all about positivity here at BoomFit, but over the years, through all the client work Charlie has done, he has come to find that it is very difficult for people to lose weight on their own. Often people struggle and find it extremely challenging to make healthy changes.
To find out just exactly what Charlie means by this, give this quick 10 minute episode a listen!
This month on the coaches edition of the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, the coaches sit down with Charlie to talk about what we all love to talk about…MURPH!
Murph is more than just a workout. It is a tradition that helps push us, humble us, and allows us the opportunity to dedicate a bit of pain and sweat to honor LT. Michael P. Murphy, a man who sacrificed everything he had for our freedom.
Each coach shares how they did this year and how they have progressed over the years. They also discuss some strategy—so you won’t want to miss this one!
On this month’s episode with Kyle, Julie, and Charlie, the team continues to discuss what’s been going on in the gym, including Bright Spot Friday, how new members can get connected and keep safe during the workouts, AND most importantly, FREE CLASS FRIDAY! Bring a friend with you to a class on the first Friday of every month, which is something we are bringing back that we used to do pre-COVID.
Listen in to stay caught up on what’s going on at Boomfit and College Station Crossfit!
This week on the #BuildingBetterPeople, we meet Cameron Blackwood. Cameron describes being in the best shape of his life when he was in high school where he played both football and baseball. One cool fact is that Cameron was coached in baseball by Craig Biggio—yes Craig Biggio from the Astros!
Cameron talks to Charlie about what that experience was like, but after high school, he noticed his weight and fitness started to change, which he says wasn’t surprising since he replaced his 4 hour workouts with beer and tailgates (how many of us can relate to that!).
Cameron also talks about his recent Murph prep and how he hopes to be in good enough shape to complete this challenging workout.
We think a lot of people will really relate to Cameron’s story and struggles. Enjoy!
Get ready for another 10 minute pep talk from Charlie!
On this week’s episode of the #BuildingBetterPeople podcast, Charlie talks about listening to your body, but more importantly…listening to your coach!

Listen in to hear the value of listening to your coach and how they can see things you may not be able to see yourself.

Enjoy!

Charlie recently spoke to the staff at SOS Ministries about the positive impact that occurs when you make health a priority. In life, whether it be in business, in motherhood or in college we forget to give attention to important areas of our life that will suffer if they are neglected. When we neglect these areas like our health we suffer later and during because of it. In ministry especially it is often more common to give to others than take care of yourself. This is why SOS asked Charlie to come speak. In his talk he shares how making as simple as a 1% improvement each day overtime you can make significant change in your health. By committing to your health in this way you are increasing your capacity to serve others. If you are interested in having Charlie come speak to your business or organization you can contact him directly at 979-693-3103 or by email at charlie@myboomfit.com.
