The first new episode of Springfood, MO in four months! Sort of! Andy visited Springfield last week, so he and Dan re-reviewed one of the few restaurants they think they got wrong the first time around, New House Chinese Food! They mostly just caught up an goofed around though. Enjoy!
Andy and Dan share some new-to-them music they've been listening to over the last few months, plus they talk about cats and Andy discusses a recent trip to Cambodia.
Dan and Andy are back recording remotely from their homes on opposite sides of the globe for their first episode in a while. It’s Taco Bell day. Dan had the Bell down the road from his house in Springfield, while Andy took a long trip to a Taco Bell in Guangzhou. They explore the history of Taco Bell in China, discussing the reasons why the restaurant’s first attempt to expand into the country failed miserably, and then examine how Taco Bell radically changed its approach before beginning a second push into the PRC last year. And, of course, they discuss and compare the TB meals they both had this week. There’s a fun musical game at the end, which is apparently this show’s deal now.
All good things must end, and so must things that are less good, like th the Springfood, MO Revival. On the last episode--for now--Dan and Andy show up late to a date with destiny as they finally review Hemingway's Blue Water Cafe, the wildly expensive restaurant inside the most iconic place in Springfield, Bass Pro Shops. Later, scores are settled from earlier revival episodes as Cole Simmons of Mint Fatigues calls into the show, and Nicole Noonan of the band Big Alive stops by to hash out a grudge with Dan. More surprises after that, but c'mon, you can guess what happens at the end of the ep, right?
Chaos reigns as Sarah Jenkins and Nate Black of The Mystery Hour return to Springfood, MO to help review downtown's first and only totally meatless restaurant, Bosky's Vegan Grill, live from Andy's childhood bedroom. Sarah talks about quitting her day job. Nate talks about getting hit by a car. Later, Dan sings some vegan New Year's songs, and then some actors who were rejected for roles in The Bear stop by to share their audition tapes. Or something. Andy and Dan kiss.
For week three of the Springfood Revival, Dan & Andy review George's Family Restaurant, a 50-year-old late-night diner that features one of the show's more surprising history segments. Your hosts also discuss how much they miss--and/or don't miss--doing a restaurant review every week, and Dan shares how his Springfield dining habits have changed after finishing the show's initial 200-episode run. After reviewing George's, there's a new segment in which Andy shares some complicated feelings about the First Meal he had upon his return to Springfield--at a beloved restaurant that has undergone some major changes over the past couple years. Then, later, in a radical shock to the show's format, a special guest drops by.
Billy Dove II, aka the 417foodist--Springfield's most prominent foodfluencer--returns to the show to help Dan & Andy review a relatively new restaurant, the MSU-adjacent Mimi's Soulfood. Later, a special guest stops by, and then Andy & Dan make up for years of lies they told about Billy Dove eating bugs... by forcing him to eat bugs. Yes, to close the episode, the trio taste tests some allegedly edible insects.
Springfood, MO is back! For a limited time only. On the first of five revival episodes, the Foodmales vow not to get meta. Andy recounts the odyssey he underwent over the last couple weeks trying--and failing--to get a Popeyes chicken sandwich while back in town. Dan provides some absolutely massive updates about his life over the last year and a half. Eventually, they get around to reviewing Gilardi's, then later, you guessed it, a very special guest drops by.

Dan and Andy are returning to the food world--the food planet--with an all-new angle. They'll be reviewing international chain restaurants--any restaurant with a location wherever Andy happens to be AND wherever Dan happens to be.
The first week kicks off with Popeyes--the fast-food chicken world's orange-headed stepchild--which presently has only two locations in China. Andy traveled to Shanghai to visit China's flagship Popeyes store, while Dan traveled to 1710 South Glenstone Avenue to visit the first Popeyes in Springfield, Missouri, USA. Later, there's a chicken-centric music game, then a special guest drops in to promote an upcoming feature film.
The erstwhile Foodmales return after the briefest of hiatuses to bring part two of their Whiplash series! This time, it's Dan's turn to uplift you while Andy makes you sad.
Dan & Andy alternate depressing and uplifting songs, respectively! Next time they'll switch.
Finally, the conversation you've been clamoring for: we talk about dead bands and Elden Ring.
We're trying out a very original new format: a radio show! With music! And talking too, of course. I'll try to add a list of all the songs later. Maybe.
Andy and Dan are back for another friendly check-in! This time they discuss, among many other things, Steve Pokin's departure from the News-Leader and the controversial changes at Thai Express. Plus, Andy tells the story of a harrowing and transcendent recent dining experience, as well as what it was like to watch a U.S.-style cover band in an Irish Pub in southern China. The episode ends with a mercifully brief rundown of the guys' recent media consumption. Of course, they also talk about cats. It's pretty fun!

Recovered from the deepest recesses of the internet, today's Tower Club-exclusive is a remaster of the first podcast episode Dan & Andy ever recorded together, from way back on August 23, 2013. It's the second episode of Andy's second podcast, The Golden Age of Everything, which ran sporadically for 12 episodes eight years ago. We talked about At World's End, Run The Jewels, and Watchmen (the novel). Prepare for a lugubrious slew of embarrassing bad takes from a 21- and 27-year-old who knew much less about these subjects than they believed. If you like low-energy discussions with copious Ums, Uhs, and long pauses, this episode is for you. We've come a long way!

Dan & Andy somehow managed to entertain an audience in-person for an entire hour during their first ever live performance, a full-length review of one of Springfield's longest-running restaurants, Mexican Villa. Recorded on May 5th, 2019 at Pagination Bookshop as part of Artsfest 2019, this episode is one for the record books. I mean, not really. I don't know what record they broke, other than maybe most Mexican Villa food eaten by two humans in a single week. Anyway, the Foodmales talk chips, salsas, dips, and a dozen different entrees before a brief Q&A and a surprising interruption.

For the penultimate week of Chinese New Year, the Foodmales visit and discuss Andy’s favorite Chinese spot in town, Bao Bao Chinese Bistro. They also taste-test one of Bao Bao’s more adventurous menu options in a new segment called Testin’ Intestines. AND THEN. FINALLY. The boys play a clip from CNN that reveals the hotly-anticipated results of their Best/Worst Chinese Food in Springfield poll! And for some reason CNN interviews an old friend of the show about it. Andy & Dan convene to discuss one of Springfield's most historically-important Chinese establishments, Shanghai Inn, along with its sort of sister-restaurant, Peking House. They are joined by Andy Sun, whose mother and father founded both restaurants decades ago. It turns out that her mother, Aurora, had an impact on Springfield-style Chinese food that rivals the significance of David Leong's. Dual reviews follow an extended interview, as well as the regular Chinese New Year segments and a brand new addition to the show that neither Dan nor Andy predicted beforehand, but about which they are both thrilled. As promised/threatened, the Springfood Heathead Coalition convenes to try and discuss Springfield's brand new Nashville Hot Chicken joint, Hot Cluckers. That's Andy & Dan, along with previous guests Verena Fri and Lora & Joe from Skully's. The whole crew sits down, enjoys a meal together on mic, and talks about the food. It is very goofy. Afterward, Joe has Dan, Andy, and Verena try some of Skully's special (very) hot sauces. It goes about as well as you might expect. Party on, mother cluckers.
Chinese New Year continues as Dan introduces Andy to his favorite Springfield Chinese Restaurant, CreAsian! Dan was also in charge of the Bio segment this week and the results are... let's just say, of dubious veracity. The boys discuss several meals they had at the restaurant this week, covering Americanized dishes as well as their adventures exploring the offerings of CreAsian's extensive authentic Chinese menu. There is also an extra special non-Chinese New Year feature; a listener provided an item she believed could change Dan's mind about a preference he mentioned in a previous episode. Silliness abounds! The Foodmales kick off their Chinese New Year miniseries with Leong's Asian Diner, home to the original recipe of Springfield Cashew Chicken. In 2015 writer Ettie Berneking published an essential profile of the restaurant, its owners, and the legendary dish. Ettie came to the Tower to discuss the research and writing process, as well as provide a brief rundown of the Leong's family's history. Then the boys go solo (go duo?) into their experiences with the famous food, featuring like five all-new CNY-exclusive segments. It's pretty fun.

Dan and Andy discuss about recent meals at Civil Kitchen, the popular upscale eatery on the square, as well as explore the compelling history of one of its original proprietors. There's a brief What Chu Eatin' in which Andy regals Dan with the tale of his recent trip to Little Danube in Ozark. Later, the Foodmales are joined by special guests Jen & Rogan, owners of The Golden Girl Rum Club, who stop by to talk about their Sippin' Santa pop-up, a Christmas-theme cocktails-for-charity endeavor. The guests stick around for a serious Callout, in which Dan puts a friend of his ON BLAST. And then another weird thing happens. And then the episode ends.
Andy and Dan are joined by Verena Fri of @intuitivesweets on Instagram to delve into the food and history of Supreme Kringle Bakery, just in time for the holidays! We also try some of Verena's creations, as well as answer baked-good themed questions. This is a calm, lovely episode. Just the chillest of chill times.
