HLER combines the initials of Heikki Lindgren and Esa Ruoho. It also describes the improvisational creative process of this ambient drone duo from Finland.
A couple of years ago, Heikki came across a second-hand Peruvian synthesiser. The machine quickly revealed its potential for endless sonic creativity, mainly because Heikki found it almost impossible to recreate the exact same sound twice. He soon introduced the machine to Esa, and together they decided to explore the machine's inherent sonic instability in a live setting.
Each performance follows the same creative process, but with wildly different results every time. Digging in to the Mochika XL's front panel, Heikki begins mining for sound. Esa then processes Heikki's discoveries through his laptop, revealing hitherto undiscovered facets to Heikki's freshly unearthed sonic gems. Then, with the twist of a dial, Heikki introduces something new to Esa, and the whole process continues onwards and upwards.
"We are always surprised by the spaces we find ourselves in, and the directions the sounds take during a performance. We cannot repeat anything in exactly the same way, even if we wanted to! Just turning the Mochika XL synthesiser off and back on, keeping all of the knobs untouched in exactly the same position, leads to a changed sound."

if you listen very carefully, you'll hear the Zoom H1 recording device emitting clicks and beeps every once in a while. I plugged it into a USB-Hub, thinking, hey presto, solution.. Well, anyway, the "really low volume clicking + beeping" not supposed to be there. If you don't recognize it, then i faded the gig in, and faded the recording out, at the exact right time.
Anyway, this was performed live at the Polyphonic 2019 Ambient music festival, and the concept was "Plugged into nothing" - so the only sound-source was a set of unplugged cables, which I either grabbed and touched together or separately, or connected together.
All sampling, effecting, processing made with a custom-built Pure Data script, Renoise, and Ableton Live.

"Courtesy of probably the most renowned artist on Monotonik, Finland's pukka idm maestro Lackluster, late of DeFocus Records, Merck, Rikos, and a host of other labels, we have a rare treat - a full, hour-long live set recorded at Helsinki's Mbar in July 2003.
There, using a laptop running the great Ableton Live software, Esa 'Lackluster' Ruoho mashed up classic Monotonik tracks, remixes, and on-the-spot jams into a cohesive whole - highlights include a gorgeous unreleased track, the super-catchy Ceniq remix which formerly featured on seminal netlabel Milk, the splicing of some surprising breaks into the classic downtempo of 'Bothersome (Mother Mix)', and the final jazzy ambience of a cunning Proem remix, bizarre voice modulations and all. Much kudos to Lackluster for not only recording the moment, but allowing us to put it out for free - return the favor and pick up some of his vinyl or CDs when you have the chance?

Its time for the first release of 2009 - after the superb Solar Fields ep, we've got a Kahvi regular. Lackluster is a familiar name to many Kahvi followers, and after the success of his live set at the Netaudio Festival London 2008 (a Lackluster set is something to experience live) I asked Esa if he could supply a recording of one of his sets, and here it is.
Live at Oblivion (Helsinki) - 14-11-08 is a prime example of what makes Lackluster great in the live gig circuit. Continuously evolving beats and grooves, all created in real time by splicing, shifting, pounding, and manipulating previous tracks, new material and 'created live' sounds. This set is 80 minutes of Lackluster at his best.
Esa is always available for live sets and has now set up an eventful page where fans can vote to have their favorite artists appearing at a gig near them. Head over and vote for your city.
