PAGE 2 Simone Joyaux, ACFRE, Adv Dip, FAFP, world-renowned fundraiser, author, board member, partner, icon, mentor, teacher, hero, and activist—passed away on Sunday, May 2.
Simone was a guest on this Nonprofit Coach Podcast many times over the years. For her final episode, she directed the title would be “Nonprofit Coach: Simone Joyaux Uncensored Thoughtful, Inspirational Philanthropy.” If you knew her, I am sure you agree that title sums up her incredible career. She mentored me on the importance of this podcast, and on every episode, her passion for the fundraising profession, the success of all Boards of Directors, and all charities they serve were on display for all. Her unending drive for excellence flows through every episode.
She and I spoke at the same events around the world for many years. We were both invited to participate in the 2000 AFP Faculty Academy (photo) and served on several committees together.
When I reached out to her life partner Tom Ahern to ask if it would be ok to host this special edition of the Nonprofit Coach “In Celebration of Simone,” he said, “Of course, Ted!!! That would be wonderful.”
Simone was unfailingly kind and tough all at the same time. Simone was riveting, inspirational, and a speaker of truth. Future generations of donors and fundraisers alike will reference and rely upon the wisdom in her many books and lectures.
In this edition of the Nonprofit Coach, we share memories and the wisdom of Simone that future generations will benefit from. Join us, call in, and share as we gather “In Celebration of Simone.”

Description: "Giving and Receiving and ???"
The holidays are prime time for giving and receiving. We focus on "year-end giving," knowing that it is the most opportune time for individuals to invest with gratitude in the issues they care about. But what happens after we receive those gifts? Yes, we thank our donors (and quickly!) but what happens next? Stewardship, one of the oldest concepts in philanthropy, is also the most neglected. Why we neglect it is complicated: too little time, limited resources, stretched staff -- all excuses that in fact are not donor-focused which is what we simply must be. Kay Sprinkel Grace will once again give us her holiday gift of insights, challenges and best practices: this year focused on being better stewards of our most important resource, our donors.

Two of the biggest information-sharing forces in the nonprofit sector just combined to create a new organization. It’s called, appropriately, Candid, a merger between the Foundation Center and GuideStar. For funders and nonprofits trying to better understand opportunity within the sector, the Foundation Center collects information on more than 13 million grants offered by 155,000 grantmakers. For nonprofits and would-be donors trying to understand the efforts of other cause groups, GuideStar has built an open database with profiles on 2.7 million active organizations. “The name Candid goes back to the roots of both organizations . . . and also speaks to our approach to [sharing] information,” says Bradford Smith, who will become the president of Candid after previously serving as the president at Foundation Center.

PAGE 2 GUEST EXPERT: Jason Lewis brings us his new book The War for Fundraising Talent, a hopeful critique of professional fundraising, intended especially for small shops that find it difficult to consistently achieve their fundraising goals. Small shop organizations often experience rapid professional staff turnover and high donor attrition which are merely side effects of what Jason believes is a much larger problem. This inter-sector conflict will not be won by those organizations who continue to mistakenly consider their scarcest resource to be donors with dollars. Jason Lewis, CFRE & AFP Master Trainer, provides the sector with an often needed contrarian voice, willing to question deeply ingrained beliefs and assumptions of how effective fundraising really works. Jason is also the host of The Fundraising Talent Podcast. Jason and his guests have an honest conversation about what it means to be a fundraising professional. The podcast provides listeners with a better understanding of what it means to fill one of the sector’s critically important yet least understood roles.

Description: "What We Give When We Ask"
Most of us are askers: whether asking for philanthropic gifts or asking people to contract for our services or to become a volunteer -- we are constantly asking. When asking becomes difficult, we often cite "donor fatigue" -- and those who turn us down accuse us of "banging a tin cup" and "begging" for money, time, or produce/service commitment. How can we change this? How, in this season of giving, can we elevate asking to the exceptional practice of engaging others in inspiring vision, shared values and an experience that will enhance their lives. Based in the idea that our work needs to be based in abundance, not scarcity, Kay Sprinkel Grace will bring us her holiday message about the ways in which asking is giving. Kay Sprinkel Grace will explore a new future for philanthropy in her annual program for the Nonprofit Coach with Ted Hart Radio Show.

Larry's message is that good branding is far less about marketing, advertising and public relations and far more about quality leadership and staff, appropriate and ethical behavior, and an organization’s willingness, ability and commitment to live up to the promises, or covenant, its brand represents.
“A brand is nothing less than your organization’s DNA," he says, "not a cosmetic you apply to your organization to make it look pretty. It’s a true reflection of who you are and what you do. You can spend millions of dollars on marketing, and say anything you like about yourself. .”
