We get together over zoom to discuss staying creative during the pandemic, overview their careers in theater and in particular talk about their experiences performing in The Lion King.
NEW VIDEO, 30th Anniversary: when the Loma Prieta Earthquake hit northern California and San Francisco on October 17, 1989, song parodist and performer, Loose Bruce Kerr (an irregular feature on the Dr. Demento Show) produced and distributed an AUDIO cassette which inserted into a fake post-quake news interview popular song snippets to tell the story. The quake happened on Kerr’s birthday.
The musical bits were taken from songs about San Francisco and by Bay Area bands and singers like Jefferson Starship, Janis Joplin, Huey Lewis & the News, Marty Ballin, Journey, Pointer Sisters, Santana, Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dionne Warwick, Canned Heat, Otis Redding, Scott McKenzie, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, and Jeanette McDonald.

Kerr stopped performing in 1993 to resume his legal career he’d left 20 years before and became Assistant General Counsel at Sun Microsystems. He is currently an attorney working at Oracle who acquired Sun in 2010.

"Y2K" (AUDIO 1999), song parody to the tune of "YMCA" by the Village People. A song which Loose Bruce Kerr's employer, Sun Microsystems, turned into a parody music video (re-releasing in September, 2019!).
This tune made the Dr. Demento "Funny 5" in 1999.

Linda and I have been friends with this couple since our first borns were together in preschool and grew up together. "4+20" by Loose Bruce Kerr is an AUDIO MP3 parody of Stephen Stills' song, "4+20" from 1969. It's about April 20th each year at 4:20pm when pot lovers everywhere celebrate, well, pot! Together. Or alone. Whatever. Who's counting (...except on the calendar & clock).
Instead of Stills' dark picture of despair, the parody flips it to celebrating 4/20. At 4:20pm. You get the picture. Or had it decades ago.
Whether I still smoke pot or not is private, this song’s title begged for a parody of it. However, I will say I first tried pot the same year Bill Clinton did. But I definitely inhaled. Earbuds encouraged.

This is how our rock road band in New England in 1978 opened our shows. For this concert, we played about 12 original songs after this opener. Big stage for us since most of our 4-5 gigs a week those years were clubs, college pubs, bars, ski lodges. But once in a while, a concert like this one came along where, instead of 4 x 45 min. sets including covers, we did an all-original show of songs written by "Loose Bruce" Kerr.
We had a band house in rural northern Massachusetts up on the New Hampshire border, about an hour out of Boston. In those days, around 3 to 5pm, 4-5 times a week, 3 cars loaded with gear would launch down that 1/4 mile driveway (if snow allowed) to drive an hour to 4 hours away in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut or Mass.
In the big snowstorm of '78, we were snowed in at that house for a week, lost a lot of gigs & money, but we made up for it over the following months.
Alas, all bands dis-band (yes, I said it) and dis band did no differently. In 1979 we went back down to Steve & I as a duo, then we split in January, 1980, Steve moved to Boise, Idaho and started various bands. Bruce went to St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands to go solo for the next 12 years there and in California. Tyke ended up in Florida, Mickey in southern California, Bruce in northern California, and Steve in Idaho.

"THE GIRLYMAN," (AUDIO) by Loose Bruce Kerr (2004) is a parody of "The Candyman" as sung by Sammy Davis Jr. in 1972. The parody transforms the positive Candyman who made the world glow with candy into the negative budget opponents in the California State Legislature of new California Governor in 2004, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Governor dubbed them, "Girliemen" in reference to a famous bit at the time on Saturday Night Live where "Hans & Franz" (actors, Dana Carvey & Kevin Nealon, respectively) performed a send-up of former body builder Schwarzenegger, using Austrian accents to put down male weaklings who didn't train, as "girlymen." In the song, the singer Schwarzenegger puts down those legislators, including at the time, Darryl Steinberg, current Sacramento mayor, as such girlymen for opposing his budget plans.
Loose Bruce Kerr (nationally: Dr. Demento Show, Jim Bohannon Show, CNN & other network segments using his parodies related to current news stories) recorded each vocal and instrument one at a time on his 4-track cassette deck during the summer of 2004. Kerr had a 20 year career as a songwriter and performer before resuming his earlier career as an attorney. Currently, he works for Oracle in Rocklin, CA. Back in the day, Kerr opened for "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Here's Loose Bruce Kerr's latest song parody, to the tune of the 1909 Yale University song, "The Whiffenpoof Song."
It is, of course, about the current Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, and his recent U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee appearance wherein he nearly waxed poetic about his love of beer from his high school days on. Some of his Yale acquaintances are saying that love was over the top.
The Yale drinking song here becomes a vehicle for Kavanaugh and his buddies to fondly look back when that drinking included ralphing (you know) and boofing (you may not know: it's consumption of alcohol or whatever "on the back end").

a song parody video of the 1964 song,"Ringo" by Lorne Greene, this tells the tale of the downfall of televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, caught with a prostitute in a cheap motel in 1988.
Uploaded to youtube in 2007, Swaggart's law firm in 2009 issued a cease & desist letter to Bruce and his employer, Sun Microsystems (Bruce was Assistant General Counsel at the time), and ordered youtube.com to take down the video (which it did). The Electronic Frontier Foundation took the case for Bruce, Swaggart backed off and the video was restored on youtube. Here is that video from 1988, orginally produced and shown in affiliation with a San Francisco nationally affiliated tv station as the story broke.

"FRANKENANCY," the comedy audio by Loose Bruce Kerr, about Frank Sinatra & Nancy Reagan, was inspired by Kitty Kelley's book about Nancy Reagan in 1991. It tells the story of the rumored romance between those 2, using snippets of Frank Sinatra recordings to tell the story via a mock interview format. At the time, the montage received airplay on several major networks and nationally affiliated radio programs like the Dr. Demento Show and Jim Bohannon Show. On the 25th year anniversary, Loose Bruce Kerr's comedy audio montage of "The Quake of '89" tells the story of the northern California earthquake of that year on October 17th (Bruce's birthday) through rock bands and singers, all of whom are in some way connected to the San Francisco Bay area. The piece received radio airplay in the month following the earthquake and the audio cassette's sales helped raise money for earthquake relief.
Oakland, Marin, the outer East Bay, San Jose, and of course, San Francisco are all represented. Everyone from Tony Bennett to Huey Lewis to the Pointer Sisters to the Grateful Dead to Credence to Janis Joplin to Otis Redding...they're all here to tell the story using snippets of their songs.

I reach back into the video archives for this old song of mine from 1973, and a video we shot on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands around Carnival time of 1981. It's "The Bald Truth," about losing anything yet still winning. Steve Hoeft & I also performed it in our band, Spud City, in the late 1970's but there's no video of that, unfortunately. "THE HOUSEHUSBAND BLUES" is one of "Loose Bruce" Kerr's early solo compositions from 1972-74. In about the summer of either '74 or '75, while returning to his hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin during his living on the road, he bumped into fellow Waukeshan, guitarist whiz, Bruce Riddeough. The result was both Bruces playing on this tune (Bruce R. on bottleneck guitar). Les Paul's multitrack recording invention had just, and finally, reached consumer level with the TEAC 4 track reel-to-reel recorder, allowing Bruce K. to harmonize with himself, and add drums & bass.
The song deals with the then-current loosening of parents playing traditional, defined roles...at a time when fathers were starting to take on some of the traditional wife's roles in raising kids, including inheriting some of the same downsides that can accompany those duties.

"REAM RAPER" is "Loose Bruce" Kerr's latest parody of Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" and protests the Texas law forcing on a woman vaginal wand insertion for a sonogram before allowing an abortion. (True, it doesn't require wand insertion in all cases but in the first trimester, that's the only method). This issue is currently a subject of satire in Gary Trudeau's "Doonesbury" comic. Pennsylvania governor, Tom Corbett, famously uttered the parody's opening line as how a woman can choose to cope with forced viewing of the sonogram, "You can just close your eyes."
In Texas, it's the law. In PA, a bill is under consideration. Virginia also has a similar law. There's a trend here and it has to be stopped, and reversed, IMHO. There's a fight a-brewin'.
Bruce apologizes for being the ugliest woman imaginable in this video but, truthfully, a guy opining against vaginal insertion by the state, well, it raises questions (and no time for alternatives, these lyrics needed posting now).

Never fully recovered from the dotcom days of my first employment there. Loved every minute. Best IT industry professionals in the world. Like the "Tucker" auto & Jeff Bridges movie, best product, ahead of its time, not quite a market match, unfortunately. But we kicked butt & had fun.
"THE TWELVE BUGS OF CHRISTMAS," sung by The Sun Carolers, Sun Microsystems employees in Menlo Park, California under the direction of James Langdell who, each Christmas, "take their show on the hall" to sing and entertain their fellow workers with holiday favorites.
This one is, obviously, a parody of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," and its origin is uncertain. Suffice to say, it is a perennial favorite, particularly of software engineers, and has already endured for many years.
In the true spirit of Christmas, Sun would like now to invite Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and others to, similarly, create a YouTube video related to our industry (now that Sun has typically broken through with the innovation...kidding!). The Beatles' "When I'm 64" is updated to be the concern of Baby Boomers...who will take care of us after we are no longer able to care for ourselves? Can we expect that our kids will take care of us? Should we? Did our parents have to impose on us?
The generation that worshiped youth, that worried that biological clocks might run out before starting a family, now has to face the possibility of that biological clock slowly running down with our not having saved enough from a liftetime of work to be able to support the autumn of our years. College funds for our children were the challenge, forget about putting that into the retirement fund. Does that mean we get to rely on our kids if we get stuck in our final years? What're the rules? Hasn't this always been the unwritten burden of the children of the aged? But living to 94 or a hundred is quite different than living to 55 or 60, as in the old days...hence, "When I'm 94." Enjoy!

Even to straight people, 2 women together seems to not bother anyone, even turns many hetero men and women on. However, in our culture, 2 men together (while wildly acceptable in the gay community, of course), even mere touching is still bothersome to many, if not most, American straight men. It's just a fact. Hence, this parody.

Kerr had just joined Sun's legal department when the lawsuit was filed. Kerr recorded this in his Silicon Valley garage 6 months into his new job, one vocal and instrument at a time on a 4 track cassette deck. Yes, those are non-heavy metal ukeleles on this recording.

This is a new video of Bruce's 1992 parody song which parallels the media saturation regarding Woody Allen's breakup with Mia Farrow and his affair with her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn.
Woody & Soon-Yi are still together but at the time the story broke, the nation was divided between those who saw the relationship of 60 year old Allen and 25 year old Previn as true love conquering all and those who saw it as improper, even immoral.
The parody song was played many times in '92 & '93 on the Dr. Demento and Jim Bohannon radio shows, and was featured on a "basement tapes" edition of Dr. Demento's.
The background parts were recorded by Bruce one-at-a-time and mixed down from his 4-track cassette deck, including multiple overdubs of Bruce playing "vocal trumpets." This video has Bruce singing live and playing his Les Paul electric guitar over his old background tracks.
A year after first recording this parody song, Bruce resumed his career as a lawyer which he had put on hold for 20 years to record and perform music. "IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VIDA POLKA," a combination parody by "Loose Bruce" Kerr, as featured on the Dr. Demento and Jim Bohannon syndicated radio shows, combines Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" with the 1968 drum solo hit song by Iron Butterfly, "IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VI-DA" and an added accordian unfortunately turns it into a nightmarish polka. In this fantasy parody, as the 60's start to come back in the form of flared jeans, black lights, lava lamps, etc., the added accordian somehow kidnaps the 60's rock sound and morphs it into a polka. Oh, the humanity. Ah, you can never go home again. Bruce laid down the instruments and vocals, one at a time, then brought in a female accordian player who was the local accordian society's president who'd not only never heard "IN-A-GA-DA-DA-VI-DA," she had somehow evaded hearing Ricky Martin's constant anthem, the beach song of a recent summer. Lawrence Welk may have been her last influence. This picture is Bruce in 1968 when he was in a rock band at the U. of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the Byzantine Empire, who opened for the Iron Butterfly in Chicago in 1968 as their psychedelic era hit was hitting the top of the charts. Sit back, crank up this double-parody, and take comfort that the story of this song will never truly exist to hurt us. Trust me. Rock does not have a polka phase ahead. I thought the recent demonstators' use of the flag of Mexico was plain stupid and counterproductive. If it's the Mexican flag that's the symbol, what's with the excape at risk of death scenario and coming here? If, on the other hand, you've escaped and now want the rights and privileges of citizenship, why are you not including yourself in the American landscape and waving the flag? That would engender more support from the current citizenship of the U.S. I realize the Mexican flag is a symbol of solidarity-for citizens. If you really deserve citizenship here, and you came here like earlier immigrants to fold into the American dream and culture, embracing the American flag would do more to convince the current citizens of your true intent to become an American. The prevalence of a foreign flag in our streets, and that of a country who many feel is conducting a de facto "invasion" in numbers of immigrants coming here illegally, turned many off in the political center and even the left who might otherwise have been supporters (and eventual voters) on this issue.
