In 1 Samuel 8, we come to a story where Israel demands to have a king. Samuel perceives that Israel’s request is evil. In demanding a king, Israel is rejecting God as king. But when we take a step back and look at the whole of the Old Testament, there seems to be indication that a king was part of God's plan for bringing about restoration and healing to Israel and thus the whole world. In this episode we want to dive a little deeper into the question of where does a human king fit into God's plan in Israel’s restoration and redemption?

When we come to 1 Samuel it can be easy to get lost in all the details. Who is who and what in the world is going on? And my goodness, what do ancient narratives about kings and wars and battles have to do with my life today?

In this episode we want to look at the role of the priest. In the early chapters of Samuel we are introduced to a corrupt priesthood – the main leaders in Israel. But when we step back, this has been going on from the very beginning.

Why does this matter? Well the corrupt priesthood seems to be an intentional design feature of the story – getting us to look forward to the ultimate and long-awaited priest we all need.

Here we want to look a little more broadly on the “fulfillment quotations” in the early chapters of Matthew’s gospel. There are 5. Yet when you read how Matthew uses these Old Testament passages, it often seems like he is referencing the Old Testament passages out of context.

What are we to make of how Matthew uses the Old Testament?

As Goldingay writes, “To gain the full implications of prophecies such as these for the significance of the Christ event, we need to go back to those prophecies themselves.”[1]

After Matthew narrates the events of Joseph finding out that Mary, his wife, has conceived a child through the Holy Spirit and that his name will be Jesus, Matthew says that “all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet (Isaiah)” (Matt. 1:22).

From there, Matthew 1:23 that speaks of a child called Immanuel (God with us) is a quotation from Isaiah 7:14.

But when you look at Isaiah 7 it can be confusing. How is Matthew seeing the birth of Christ in Isaiah 7? Listen as we seek to explore the context of Isaiah 7:14

God celebrates. He invented delight, joy and celebration. And one way we enter into the divine life of the Trinity is through celebration. Whether solemn or exhilarating, formal or spontaneous, celebration can enlarge our capacity to enjoy and serve God. Celebrating God does not depend on perfect circumstances or happy feelings. This world is full of brokenness, pain and suffering. Celebration doesn’t ignore the reality of pain, but declares in the face of pain that pain does not have the final word.

One of the very first practices of the church was that of communion. This is the meal that Jesus gave us hours before his death for us to remember what He has done for us. His body broken, his blood shed for you and for me. Communion invites us into a deeper unity and communion with Jesus as we remember his sacrifice. Christ’s blood and body were sacrificed for us. His sacrifice becomes a pattern for our own journey.

We live in a society that is becoming more and more individualistic. We often feel like there is not enough time to live life together. But the narrative of the New Testament is that following Jesus is not done in isolation, but in community. God’s family is meant to be the “show and tell” of what true belonging and love looks like. God’s one plan for reaching the world involves a community of broken people who gather with a desire to love him and make Jesus known in the world.

In our cultural moment, loneliness is on the rise and community is threatened. So, what does it look like to embody the welcome of God in our life together as practitioners of Jesus’ way? Paul tells the church in Rome: “practice hospitality.” (Romans 12v13) But what does this mean? See, hospitality is not about impressing others with well-decorated homes and gourmet cooking. It’s not simply for the gifted or those with clean homes. Hospitality is a way of loving our neighbor in the same way God has loved us.

God has shaped and crafted us in unique and different ways and has invited us to participate in His story of redemption. Part of our growth as followers of Jesus is learning more about who we are so that we might better be able to participate in God’s plan of redemption. At the same time the ways that God has created and gifted us are not ultimately about just us. Our gifts are meant for the common good, upbuilding of the body of Christ, all to the glory of God. So the question becomes, how has God gifted and called you?

At the same time, so much of who we are today has been influenced by people, places and opportunities--namely, our life experience. Throughout the Scriptures, God calls his people to embody his justice and mercy. Micah 6v8 is a great example: "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God." Faithful presence names the reality that God is present in the world and that he uses a people, faithful to his presence, to make himself concrete and real amid the world’s struggles and pain. Loving your enemies is probably one of the most neglected practices of the Way of Jesus. In a polarized culture and climate (like the one we find ourselves in), it is often easier to tweet about our enemies rather than actually love them. And yet, Jesus tells us to love our enemies and bless those who curse us. Let us consider together what this might actually look like.

Let’s be honest, many of us feel bad, even guilty, about how little we pray. When we finally do make time to pray, we often don’t know what to say. Or we’re so distracted we can’t focus. Yet for Jesus, prayer was central to his connection to the Father. Prayer was how he connected and responded to the Father. It was the place he listened and was simply with God. And his experience informs ours. Prayer isn’t a duty, an obligation. It is being with God and listening to his voice. It is the relational center of our life with God.

What is worship? Is it simply singing songs on Sunday morning or in the car, listening to the radio? In the scriptures, we see that, yes, worship involves our words. But we also see that worship involves action. In Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4 and 5, God is worshiped. “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty” is what those gathered sing. And rightly so. God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things and thus deserves our praise. But we also see that worship involves our bodies—offering them as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12v1). As his image-bearers, we were made to reflect his goodness and character into the world. This also is worship.

In Exodus 12 we read about the Passover celebration commemorating God’s deliverance of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. As the centuries progressed, this feast and celebration was continually practiced by God’s people. When we come to Jesus, we find that Jesus has reoriented the whole Passover celebration around his life and ministry as a way to remember his sacrifice for our sins on the cross. Jesus is our true Passover lamb. Throughout church history, there has been considerable debate as to what exactly is happening during what we generally call The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, or The Eucharist. As we come to the end of the book of Genesis, we wanted to take a few moments to talk about both some key highlights from Genesis and look at one particular Messianic prophecy that often gets overlooked.

Did you know that at the end of the book of Genesis, there is a short poem that tells of a future descendant of Judah that will rule the nations as king?

There is also a few key phrases in Gen 49 that get translated differently in our English Bibles that are crucial to understanding the Messianic hope of the Pentateuch.

Right after the introduction to the story of Joseph in Genesis 37, we get what seems a bizarre detour with perhaps one of the more grotesque stories in all the Bible - Genesis 38, the story of Judah and Tamar. In this chapter, Judah sleeps with his daughter and law Tamar. Why is this story important? Why is it included in our Bibles?

God says at one point in the Scriptures, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

What?!

Esau is the twin brother of Jacob yet Jacob through his deceit receives the Abrahamic blessing. Jacob gets included in the popular refrain, “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

But what about Esau? What is his significance in the biblical story? In this episode we explore some key concepts and implications of Esau.

In this episode we dive into the life of Esau and his significance for the biblical story.

In Genesis 22 we come across the famous story of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. One of the natural questions that comes up in reading this narrative is why?

For additional study notes go here.

Why would God command child sacrifice? What does this story say about the character of God?

At the same time, this story has major implications for the rest of the Old Testament and for the New Testament writers. The connections from Genesis 22 to Jesus are worth pondering.

In this episode we will look at both of those issues – the question around child sacrifice and the connections to Jesus.

-       This podcast will seek to explore some of those interpretative options

We have been created for more. We have this “haunted” sense that there must be more to life than just living for our own selves for several decades. What is our purpose here on earth? How might we know God more fully?

Aaron and Tony sit down to briefly chat about different views on Genesis 1. While many faithful followers of Jesus who take the Scriptures seriously might disagree, we can still learn and grow together from other viewpoints.

I. Models of Creation

In all these models there is agreement that “God created the heavens and the earth” means He created the universe. There is disagreement on how He did this work.

1 Historic Creationism (Preparing the Garden + Promised Land): Genesis 1 & 2 is the record of the God who created the sun, moon, stars, planet earth, plants, animals, etc. in the beginning (a period of time before our story begins) shaping the unpopulated uncultivated land of Israel into a luxuriant garden for Him to dwell with the first humans, His image bearers and covenant partners. The days are six 24 hour periods of God's working to prepare Eden. (John Sailhamer, Genesis Unbound)

2 Young Earth Creation: God created all things less than 10,000 years ago. The Genesis 1 days are six, sequential twenty-four-hour days. Stars, moon, earth, trees, and animals were created essentially as we see them today. Adam & Eve were created as mature adults. Often associated with flood geology, the theory that dinosaurs were killed, fossils, canyons, mountains were formed by the flood. Randy Guliuzza, Institute for Creation Research; Ken Hamm, Answers in Genesis, Creation Ministries International; Young Earth interpretation of the Grand Canyon is here)

a. Some Evidence for a Young Universe/Earth (Humphreys, Creation Matters 4:4 (July, 1999),

(1) Comets disintegrate in tens of thousands, not billions, of years Short-Lived Comets

(2) Rivers deposit 25-28 billion tons of sediments onto the ocean floor each year. If the earth is 4.5 billion years old, the sediment layers should be far deeper and the oceans far saltier than they are. Very Little Sediment on the Seafloor

(3) The earth's magnetic field and rotational velocity decays at a rate that indicates it is only a few tens of thousands of years old. Rapidly Decaying Magnetic Field

(4) The observed rate of radioactive decay would produce all observed helium in a few tens of thousands of years. Helium in Radioactive Rocks

More evidence here: https://answersingenesis.org/evidence-for-creation/the-10-best-evidences-from-science-that-confirm-a-young-earth/

3 Evolutionary Creationism (used to be called Theistic Evolution): God created mass/energy, space/time, and the laws of nature in the beginning. He providentially guided the natural processes of evolution to produce the universe, life and humanity as we see it today. However this is quite different than naturalistic evolution (Biologos, Francis Collins, The Language of God, John Lennox, Philip Johnson, Tim Keller, Michael Behe, William Dembski, Dennis Lamoureux’s explanation is here. Ancient Earth interpretation of the Grand Canyon is here)

God’s Temple (but this also can be lumped in w/ Historic Creationism above)

God inspired Moses to use the metaphor of the Sabbath week to narrate God’s acts of creation. Thus, God’s supernatural creative words or fiats are real and historical but their timing is unspecified. The purpose of the metaphor is to call Adam to imitate God in work, with the promise of entering His Sabbath rest. The days are in the Genesis narrative not in the act of Creation. (John Walton, Lost World of Genesis 1. Walton’s summary is here. Video of Walton, Polkinghorne, McGrath and others discussing the topic ishere)

4 “Day Age” / Old Earth Creation or Intelligent Design (no evolution involved). The "days" of Genesis 1 are analogies of God’s workdays, setting a pattern for our rhythm of work and rest. They are understood in the same sense as "in that day" of Isaiah 11:10-11. They represent periods of God’s historical supernatural activity in preparing and populating the earth as a place for humans to live, love, work, and worship. These days are broadly consecutive periods of unspecified length. (Hugh Ross, Reasons to Believe, Stephen Meyer, Discovery Institute)

a. Progressive Creation

(1) Apocalyptic creative days followed by long periods of "normal" life

(2) Akin to Punctuated Equilibria

b. Day-Age Theory

  1. Each day is akin to a geologic age

We apologize, but the audio recording is a little rough due to some technical difficulties.

Listen as Aaron Mattox teaches from John 15v26-16v15 on the Trinity and being led by the Holy Spirit in our post-Christian world.

“It is often said that the Holy Spirit is the Cinderella of the trinity ...the great neglected person of the godhead. But the holy spirit’s desire and work is that we would be thrilled again, excited again, and gripped again by the words and majesty and relevance of Jesus. The holy spirit does not mind being the Cinderella outside the ballroom if the prince is being honored in his kingdom.”

Dale Bruner, The Shy Member of the Trinity
