What does that mean? Does that mean we give up on others? Does that mean we try to determine who might benefit and who won’t? Or does that mean that we continue to do the best we can for ourselves and are best equipped to help someone else when the opportunity is given? If you are a true person of recovery then the answer is obvious. Just as Bill W. discovered many years ago even he couldn’t “save them all”, but somewhere in the trying he was saved.

Al-Anon and AA join together to create a complete story of wellnessAlcoholism is a family disease. More often than not, It is necessary for both the co-dependent and the addict to seek a path to wellness. Using the tools from two different, yet similar, plans of recovery both parties begin a recovery journey. Couples or families that don’t choose this path will not survive or be happy.

Throughout my life, I heard many things regarding my potential. The word BUT was used as part of my description when I was mentioned. People would often say how wonderful they thought I could be, BUT….. There was always an exclusion of my potential. There was always a conjunction between how I wanted to be seen and how I was seen. This lasted until I first came into recovery when I was 32. It was then that I learned to Drop the But. My journey has been to be as I hoped to be seen, without the word BUT playing a role in that description. I hope you enjoy today’s podcast. Be blessed

The difference between those who get sober and those who live a life of sobriety is Transformation. When we look at the emotional, mental, spiritual and the physical one is no more important than the other. Having said a well-rounded Transformation is REQUIRED for lifelong recovery. Today’s conversation with Alex covers exactly that.
The post Episode #245 The Fix; Transformation with Alex appeared first on Recovery Guy.
In the beginning, all most of us can do is hang onto our recovery chair. After we are sober for a while, we begin to see the areas of our life that went neglected. For most of us, the physical side of our health went ignored. A well-rounded sober journey requires to I become fit in all aspects of my life. This conversation with Leandro is what this podcast is about.

One of the most important things any of us can ever understand about substance abuse addiction and behavioral destruction is the amount of selfishness and self-centeredness that is at the core of the addiction. One of the reasons so many people stay in addiction, is not because they enjoy the negativity.

Life is meant to be lived according to a set of rules. I used to conduct my life as a very selfish and self-centered person. Within that self-centeredness, I decided that I would live however I would want to live, and life would have to accommodate me. That is not how it works at all.

As a people of recovery, we have agreed to go on a journey that is filled with challenges and opportunities. There are times when these realities of life seem overwhelming and difficult to understand or accept. We have a human response to embrace what makes us feel good and reject that which feels terrible. Gandhi said “One cannot do right in one department of life while attempting to wrong in another department. Life is one indivisible whole.” The point is, there will be times when the journey is filled with goodness and at other times sadness will take hold. Either way, it is the same journey

People are often dismayed and even discouraged that not drinking or using is only the basic requirement for sobriety. Let me assure you. Sobriety ONLY comes over time and when a program of recovery is followed and practiced. It’s not so much as to what plan of success you follow, as much as it is that you follow a plan that has worked for others. Be blessed.

Positive Affirmation is a topic inspired by my daughter Carol. Sometimes life is very encouraging and sometimes it’s like being a rat on a wheel. Sometimes we feel stuck in the middle of being held captive and being set free. The best safeguard to being in between or feeling like we’re on a roller coaster is positive affirmation

When it comes to characteristics of addiction there are many aspects and facets that we need to look at to come to terms with our personal condition and move forward in our recovery. Without characterizing our addiction, we will not have a sufficient jumping off place to diagnose or treat the addiction. The same could be said for getting in your car and not having a destination in mind. We could drive all we want, and we would never get anywhere. Enjoy this podcast and please reach out to Alcoholics Anonymous of Greater Detroit in Ferndale MI for more information regarding the information that we discussed today. One of the most challenging things we would ever do in recovery is learn how to control in a healthy manner. One of the things that it says in the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous is “lack of control, that was our dilemma.”

Justin B of Reco12.com Speaker Meeting discuss the importance of recognizing various addictions and behavioral challenges, as we look to become as well as we possibly can become. So many of us have challenges beyond our core addiction. As we overcome that core addiction, we must address the other areas where Wellness is needed. If we do not do this, we will continue to be uncomfortable with who we are and that degree of being uncomfortable will lead to a relapse. We will only be uncomfortable for so long before we revert to the thing or behavior that medicates us against feeling badly. When we first come into recovery we are infants who can barely roll over let alone crawl, stand, or walk. As we move forward in our recovery process and opportunity, we begin to grow a pair of wings which we will use as we learn how to fly. Some will grow a pair of wings and never use them. Others may limit themselves in their flight and or flying experience based on their fear or restrictions that others place on their flying. Learning to fly is about overcoming the perceived laws of aerodynamics and exploring new heights in our personal recovery. If you have not learned how to fly, I invite you to do so. Please let me know what I can do in this area. I wish you well and a happy soaring.

When I was in my addictive condition, I found it exceedingly difficult to celebrate. The more my condition deep and the less I celebrated and eventually I stop celebrating altogether. Coming into recovery I learned that just not drinking and using, while not engaging in the other negative behavior, was the beginning of a new approach to celebrating life. That celebration has continued for over 3 1/2 decades. I learned to celebrate each victory. I learned that celebration was an outward expression to an inward change. Let us look at this word celebration and speak of it in terms of our personal recovery.
The post Episode #228 Tuesday the Fix; Reasons to Celebrate appeared first on Recovery Guy.
According to Wikipedia, The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one wants to be treated. It is a maxim that is found in most religions and cultures. It can be considered an ethic of reciprocity in some religions, although different religions treat it differently.
As a result of this understanding, those of us in personal recovery, realize that to be served we must first serve. In other words, If I want to stay sober, I must be as concerned toward others as I want others to be concerned for me.
The post Episode #227 Tuesday the Fix; Do Unto Others appeared first on Recovery Guy.
One of the things built into healthy relationships is making amends. This is universal and something that everyone should keep in mind as we explore a healthy balance in our relationships. If this is true for the average person, how much more is it true for the person who has struggled with addiction and or behavioral challenges.

Living, interacting and being accountable to these 5 relationships everyday helps give me the direction I need and want. They also serve to give me the personal fulfillment of things I want done for me, but more importantly what I can do for others.

When it comes to recovery the only way to go up is to have first gone down. Addiction is one of the only diseases known to man that will tell you that you do not have it. We call that denial. While we are negotiating the truth from our position of denial, we hit what we call a bottom. Bottoms are two things. First, a bottom is necessary for every person of recovery. Secondly, bottoms are subjective. Have a blessed day and stay well. http://www.recoveryguy.org

When it comes to the plan of recovery and most specifically the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, they are divided into three categories. The first category is me, the second being God and the third category being others. Once we solve and reconcile these three areas, we are on the road to recovery. Everything in our life, both important and non-important, will stem from me, God, and others. If I fail to address any of these with a sense of urgency and completeness.

There is a well-known phrase that reads “Absolute Power, Corrupts Absolutely.” This quote is attributed to Lord Acton. It is stated that John Edward Acton, the first baron, has expressed this opinion in his letter written to Bishop Mandell. The letter was written in 1887. The original statement reads; “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” However, it is stated that Lord Acton is not the primary originator of this quotation.
English politician, William Pitt the Elder, Earl of Chatham and former Prime Minister of England from 1766-1778. He is stated to have said in the parliament that “Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it”, which is where we get, “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. As we dive into today’s podcast let’s look at what absolute means.

Have you ever heard of The Everlasting Gobstopper? Pulling information from Wikipedia, It is a candy from Roald Dahl's 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that is intended, according to Willy Wonka, its creator, "for children with very little pocket money". It not only changes colors and flavors when sucked on, but also never gets any smaller or disappears. It is like the gift that is recovery. Recovery is the Gift that keeps on Giving.

Suzy W and I discuss the importance of addiction as a family disease. The programs of Al-Anon and Alcoholics Anonymous have so much in common. If recovery were hard very few of us would achieve it. I am so grateful the plan of recovery is designed to be simple. I am not assaying it is easy, I am saying it is simple. The simplicity of recovery makes it accessible to and by everyone. I am not a good artist, but if you arrange the dots in the proper sequence I can draw a horse, a person or anything else you place the dots to portray. That is exactly what was done when the 12 Step Plan of Recovery was laid out. It is my experience that those who do not connect the dots and recovery are those who don’t want to connect the dots. I hope the recovery is for you and you decide to connect the dots as they are laid out.

One of the most challenging things for any person of recovery is holidays and the triggers that often accompany them. In the beginning, holidays can be the most challenging obstacle to our personal recovery. This is true whether you are the addict or the Co-dependent. Keep in mind that most addicts, are also adult children of Alcoholics, therefore co-dependent as well. Keeping this in mind, there are things that we can look out for that can help us stay insulated against relapse, while enjoying ourselves in this festive and holiday season. Here are a few of the things that we need to lookout for as we approach this time of year.

One of the things that I have learned in my recovery journey is balancing expectations. I've come to learn that expectations can be positive and negative. Expectations can also be fair or unfair. Oftentimes, expectations will get in the way of our external relationships. Expectations that aren't met can be different to understand and often judged. Therefore, it is better off to balance the expectation with fairness toward others and the uncontrollable. Expectations are best served with understanding.

Once again for things that are outside of me that are part of what I do not who I am this is rather easy to do because it’s not personal. So many of us are answerable or we have an obligation to fulfill a particular commitment or process regarding our work.

We are NEVER alone anymore. This is what recovery offers us. So, when you choose what recovery path choose wisely. Choose a plan that gives you back to power to choose to wear your shell on your back. A path that has a provision to stay recovered for the rest of your life. A path that doesn’t require me to look backward at my past (except when helping someone). When we do this, we can live the absolute that our recovery is a journey for our lifetime. Here are 3 things I must do to ensure this is true for me.
Stay grounded in the truth that set me free
Be open to adding new elements to my plan
Pray for and assist others along the way
Doing these things will add to the absolute position I decided to take. Thanks for listening and be blessed.

In order to give freely we must first take down the walls of personal secrecy and begin to share who we are and not judge what we learn about others. As a word of caution, let me say with some things we may need to be careful to whom and what we disclose, but for the most part we should feel free to “share our experience, strength and hope with each other”.

Early on in my sobriety, I had a friend who would not let go of a particular feeling of being wronged. She suffered daily, over the course of 2-3 weeks. Gradually she stopped going to meetings and stopped coming to the Alano Club. I remember learning one Friday night that she was out with some “old playmates”. I tried to speak with my friend, but she did not want to hear all the reasons she had to be grateful. She seemed to prefer the needless suffering over something out of her control. I finally said to her, “maybe you should go get drunk.” Do you know what? That was the only advice she was willing to take. Fortunately, she came to her senses in a couple of days and was able to make it back to AA. To my knowledge, she is sober to this very day. She was one of the lucky of the lucky ones

I am Responsible
Responsible is a word that only responsible people want to accept. I know that sounds simplistic in its presentation, and it is meant to be. Those who are irresponsible have made an active choice to not accept what their role is in the things that occur to them. More specifically, in addiction, the individual who is addicted is the person responsible for their addiction. Until I am willing to realize I am my own worst enemy I will not recover. If I do have a period of sobriety, more often than not, it will be shallow and short lived. That has been my experience. You can disagree if you like but that would likely mean you are not being responsible.

I was watching the Masters this last weekend and I heard a commercial regarding the universe and a particular perspective. Lack of power was our dilemma. Outer space is so vast that we don't know where it starts or where it ends. The same is true in recovery. We might be able to come close to where our addiction began. We might be able to discern the varying degrees of nature versus nurture, but pinpoint where it begins is near impossible.

One of the most wonderful things about what I do as a person committed to personal recovery is working with others along the way. One of the most important things I convey to everyone is the importance of a firm foundation. If one is to build anything a foundation is required. It has been said “If the foundations are destroyed what can one do.” I’ve also heard “a house divided against itself cannot stand.“ So not only does the foundation need to be firm but an indicator of its firmness is it singleness of purpose. To paraphrase the Gandhi, Life is an indivisible whole and it must lack internal conflict.

One of the most beautiful things about the plan of recovery are the promises that are made. They are made to give us hope. They are exclusively for those who decide to apply the plan of recovery to their life. I was so encouraged when I came into the program of Alcoholics Anonymous because I was told “that if I worked the plan of recovery as it was outlined, I could expect these things to occur.“ They were 100% correct. Loyalty is foundational to our personal recovery initially and moving forward. Loyalty is considered to be one of the five core values of who we are as a person. Loyalty is a gateway to our internal transformation that allows us to become the person we have always wanted to become. Without loyalty, we are missing a key ingredient to the change that needs to occur. We become increasingly loyal one step at a time. Loyalty leads to so many things in our life that have eluded us when we were not loyal.

Hello and welcome to Recovery Guy Podcast. I really appreciate you joining us today. Today’s topic is “healing hurts“. So often we go through life and we are hoping to heal past hurts that we have created for ourselves on a personal level and hurts we caused others on an inner personal level. Both of these needs to be addressed and healing hurts will likely be a part of our journey for the rest of our lives. It does not mean that we don’t overcome challenges or the pain/hurt that healing can cause, I just believe that there’s always more healing that can be done. I give examples in this podcast. I share a conversation that I had with my daughter Carol. I am grateful for the insight that she gave me regarding our healing journey together. I hope this podcast encourages you and I hope that you join us in our recovery movement as we look to get well one day at a time for the rest of our lives. Steve decided to devote his entire life to serving others and it is no surprise to this day he is still living the recovered life. I hope you enjoy listening to Steve as much as I did spending time with him. I can honestly say that God used him to help encourage me in my early days of recovery. Today’s podcast is a journey and an introduction into 2020. I am looking forward to this next decade and I hope you are as well. Forgiveness and freedom are so reliant upon each other. So often people are wondering why they are in bondage and why they aren’t seeing freedom in areas of their life that are important to them. My initial response is to ask where is the block? Is there an area of your life where you have not allowed forgiveness to be expressed that you can overcome the bondage that exists went forgiveness is not extended period. Please explore areas in your life where maybe you’re holding on to something that you thought was insignificant and yet forgiveness needs to be extended for you to feel the freedom that you hope to feel in your recovery.

This podcast is designed to encourage and challenge those who listen. So often people of recovery lose their way. Many of those people go back to the destructive behavior that caused their life to be the Trainwreck that it became. I believe they do this because they lose the magic and as it says in polar express “though I’ve grown old, the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe”. Where is your magic? Does the bill still ring for you? Have you lost your belief? If this is true of you I invite you to go back and remember what it was like when you first were introduced to the miracle of recovery. As I have previously stated “So as man thinks in his heart so is he”. I believe this to be so powerful that words can shape us either way. As Tuesdays podcast indicated “the power of thinking“ guides us in so many different directions we don’t even understand. Personal confirmation will help reinforce a negative view or it will help solidify a positive view. This is not to look for isolated incidents that would give us temporary happiness, but rather a way of living that promotes happiness from the inside out. It just means that we are learning to be patient and not getting too far ahead of ourselves. Certain things in life can be accomplished easily and without much effort. Personal recovery is one of those things. We did not get sick overnight nor do well overnight.

Recovery after coercion is a concept that explores why people come into recovery and why they would ultimately stay. Coercion is a manipulation through arm twisting, duress, external pressure and threats of loss. Everyone I have ever met has come to recovery as a result of coercion. The ones that I have come to know as sticking around were ones that were able to translate for transition from coercion to the plan of recovery. Without this transition people will go backward once that coercion is removed. The people who remain and recover are those who can see that it’s not about getting back things it’s becoming a new person.

In this podcast, Robert explores the ins and outs of Letting Go and why it is essential to our overall wellness. Letting Go is a necessary step in becoming well and recovery. If we don’t learn to let go we will remain in bondage to areas that prevent us from moving forward. We will forever be stunted in our recovery or we will not have any at all. In the beginning, we let go because holding on has become far too painful. As we become more well we let go because of what we are moving to, not what we are moving from. As Gandhi stated “life is one indivisible whole”. Living in pain and pleasure, joy and despair, or hope and disappointment is only an illusion. Let’s learn to “Let Go and Let God”.

Once we get past the initial recovery we should be able to move through and beginning the life of a person who is not afraid to plan while maintaining their position. Have you ever heard the Phrase “your opinion of me is none of my business“. As people new to Recovery, we are a people who were always trying to measure up to others. We spent our time worrying about their opinion and we try to own it as if it was our opinion.
For various reasons, we felt their acceptance was based on what we did not who we were. Because we had such a low self-esteem we never thought people would care for us because of who we were.
This type of thinking created an even greater lack of self-esteem because we believed no matter what we did we would never meet their expectations.
So much of personal recovery is based on understanding our value because of who we are not what we do.
As we learn more about ourselves we learned that our personal value is greater than anything we could ever do as we learn more about ourselves we learn that our personal value is greater than anything we could ever do.
This podcast addresses just that and we are given six steps in learning how to overcome that personal viewpoint that others may have of us.
We cannot spend our time worrying about other peoples opinions because we can never please everyone all the time.
I hope you find this approach to your wellness as a help in understanding that other peoples opinion of us is really none of our business.
The only thing we can really own is our personal view of ourselves and the behavior that is based upon that.

Welcome to the Recovery Guy Podcast of Thursday’s Check Up. In this episode we look at and discuss what I call “Three Agents Of Change”.
Each one of these agents works independently of one another yet or necessary to be combined as the foundation that we would build a recovery from. We look at the need to understand our lack of power. We then need to understand how that lack of power has led to our unmanageability. Finally, we must admit that something needs to be done for our life to move forward to our goal of recovery.

Most of us come to the decision of recovery or wellness out of need rather than want. Because of that, we aren’t as willing or open as we ought to be. Most of the things we agree with are due to a previous agreement or aspect of living. This works against us because we tend to agree with things that got us to this condition in the first place. Until we break free of the old behaviors and thoughts in favor of new ways we will not be successful.
This is where setting aside all old ways and ideas comes into play. However, we can’t merely let go of the old. We are too conditioned. The way to push out the old is to introduce the new. This is where The Power of H.O.W. comes into play.
H.O.W. stands for Honesty, Open Mindedness and Willingness. Until we fully embrace these three aspects the likelihood is that we will never recover. We might have some brief successes, but long term changes will evade us. Sooner or later, we will slip back into our old ways and subsequently we will go back to the old behaviors.
We MUST become Honest, Open Minded and Willing if we are to stand any chance of lifelong wellness. This podcast addresses H.O.W. one point at a time and ties them all together to make a cohesive design to recovery and wellness.

Today’s Check Up is entitled “Becoming The Best Version Of You”. In this version we discuss the reasons for self and others that we go down this path. Becoming the best version of who we are allows us to enjoy life greater and to a deeper sense. So, it is not only for the temporary it builds on our future satisfaction.
When it comes to becoming the best version of ourselves with respect to others is when we can have the greatest impact. When we become this version of ourselves and we receive the personal satisfaction of knowing what we have accomplished and then to have that self appreciated by those we help along the way is even a greater reward.
I know for some people this can be a challenge and this is why I’ve created six simple steps yet all of us are capable of understanding, implementing and being successful in. If we do not do these or take the steps it is because we either don’t feel a responsibility to her self or to others, or we just gotten lost along the way.
Either way, to not become the best version of ourselves is to deny the reason for our very existence. This podcast is designed to help you along the way. I hope you find the need, the desire and the energy to take this journey with us.

Today’s podcast is dedicated to those who have yet to feel complete or whole. There’s so many people who start their day wondering if they matter or if they make a difference.I so remember being that person. In my addiction and early in my recovery, I wondered if I would ever feel as a person of value. It was very discouraging and often very difficult to get through a day. It wasn’t a matter of whether or not I was going to drink or use it was a matter of if that feeling of emptiness would leave me and be replaced with the feeling of value. For those of us who have recovered and gone through that phase of our recovery we completely understand what it’s like to be on both sides of the issue. We know what it’s like to be grateful that others came into our life to help us understand our value and our purpose. Now as a person who has been become whole, it is my opportunity and yours to help those who have yet to feel that and help them to understand their value. Let’s make a difference in the life of other people and as my dear friend and mentor Damen Willis says “let’s leave everyone better than we found them“. Thank you for listening to the podcast and also visiting Recoveryguy.org.

Social Media Recovery and Accountability.
This episode raises and addresses my concerns over using Social Media as the foundation of recovery, rather then a supplement.
The biggest concern I have is that using social media as a primary platform can leave one without much or any accountability.
One of the greatest advantages a person of recovery (especially new or relatively new) is to relay on a person(s) that they can have a face-to-face conversation with and have a higher degree of accountability.
When there is little to no accountability, such as social media, the person then can more easily rely on the thinking that got them in the condition they are in and reject anything that would cause them to challenge their thinking.
I lay out a couple very good resources from Recovery.org and also soberlink.com. Please check out these resources and come to your own conclusion.
Thank you for joining me on the Recovery Guy podcast

Look to this day
Today’s podcast is entitled “Look To This Day”. I read an IG post that said “When you feel like quitting think about why you started”. This is a great topic. Who hasn’t questioned themselves? Who hasn’t wondered if they could do it or if there was worthwhile payoff they thought was waiting for them?
It is so important to understand why we started in the first place and the value of each day that we live. How each day can have its own power that we can be fuel us.
I present, breakdown and explore the Sanskrit Poem that so embodies the reasons why TODAY has such value. This poem points out all today can bring us. It explores and points out how today brings a sweet memory of yesterday and can be the reason we look forward to tomorrow.
I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did recording it. Please visit my website at recoveryguy.org and use any of the video segments and information that is there for you. All of my content is free.

Recovery helps create a degree of security and even increase it along the way. As our sense of purpose is revealed and implemented It increases our feeling of security.
Prior to our Recovery we did not feel we had any purpose with any redeeming value. Consequently we were very insecure in most all manners of life.
The quality and quantity of our purpose will either grow or dissipate our level of security. Where we feel we have little to no purpose we are very insecure.
Where we feel we have great purpose our security increases. I hope you enjoy this podcast and that you would not only listen, you would comment, subscribe, and share the episode.

Promises During the Process of Recovery
Thanks for joining Recovery Guy Podcast for Thursday’s The Check Up. You can find my podcast episodes on all major channels. This podcast focuses on the process and price of recovery that results in promises that are worth all the effort we exert. At times the road seems too challenging, but then one or two positive things occur and begin to see the fruits of our effort.
Recovery, in many ways, is like everything else in life. When we put together a continuous recommended effort, over time, we can expect positive results. One major difference is that in recovery we are most often overpaid.
I love to reference the Promises as referenced in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. These promises have been coming through for people of recovery even before they were written. Writing them was just a way to label what we could expect. I love how bold the author is when he states “They will ALWAYS material if we work for them”.
This has been true in my journey of sobriety, as well as countless others I have known. This can be true for you as well. Won’t you join us in this journey? Why suffer any longer when the promise of a new amazing life awaits you.
Please listen, comment, subscribe and share. We want to hear from you. All you have to lose is your misery and all you have to gain is everything.

Can We Chose
Thanks for tuning into this podcast. As we all know, our addicted life left us without any choice. We had become internally convinced that we no longer had any power. Once we came to that realization, our addiction went deeper and deeper. Many of those like us would eventually die as a direct result of our alcohol and drug consumption.
As we entered sobriety and began (little by little) to see through the lens of recovery we began taking things back. We learned to let go of the things that held us hostage and began to choose things that gave us freedom.
In this episode, I explore the ways we can choose and the power we must do so. I utilize the writings of Bill Wilson and his excerpts from As Bill Sees It as my primary source of reference. This book contains such great truths and it is in a topical format. Finding specific information is made easy. You can find this book at https://www.aa.org/assets/en_US/aa-literature/b-5-as-bill-sees-it or you can pick one up on Amazon or at your local Alano Club.
“Can We Choose”, you bet we can! The longer we live out our sober life, according to the Plan of Recovery, we make better choices. I love being able to choose, instead of having life choices made for me, don’t you?

Recovery Guy and Positive Self-Talk
Thanks for joining us for The Check Up. Today we are going to discuss the importance of positive self-talk, as it relates to recovery. My dear friend Wendy gave me the idea for today’s show. Wendy has 2 ½ years of recovery and I appreciate how she can help me remember what it was like as a newcomer.
We come from a place of such negativity and bad experiences, before recovery. Obviously, most of the negativity and bad experiences were of our own making. Nevertheless, we carry so much of the negative emotion and baggage into recovery. We might be getting physically sober and clean, but so much our life can still be filled with a poor self-image.
So much of this comes out as we, in recovery, can remain our own worst enemy. The thoughts of all the people we harmed and things that we did can haunt us well into or recovery. Shaking that negativity perspective can often be as difficult as getting sober, and at times more difficult.
Most all relapses occur because of our inability to let go of yesterday and focus on today. One of the biggest challenges to letting go of the past is how we refer to ourselves. Recalling and even reinforcing past views of ourselves is based upon behavior and choices that are no longer part of our life.
Until we recognize we aren’t the same person and begin referring to ourselves as such we stand very little chance of enjoying this new life we have chosen. We must remember that the person we referred to in such negative thoughts is no longer alive. The sober version of us has emerged and taken its place.
Learning how to recognize the amazing accomplishment we are undertaking in the first step seeing us for who we are not who we were. Once we begin seeing the new man/woman we can then begin referring to ourselves as a person of accomplishment. We can then see ourselves as the person we always wanted to be without the substances.
We begin living in the belief that we have been transferred and we are a person of great value and capable of doing great things. Please let me know how I can further assist you as you begin this journey of recovery and your desire to understand the value and power of positive self-talk in recovery.

Recovery Paradigms
Welcome to recovery guy podcast. This is an episode from “The Fix” that airs every Monday. Today’s episode is part two of two on recovery paradigms. In this episode, I picked up from where I left off last week. If you remember last week we looked at what is a recovery paradigm, a practical example of the recovery paradigm how paradigms affect us negatively and positively, the need to identify the erroneous paradigms.
We then transitioned into remove or displaying paradigms that are not consistent with our direction, commitment or overall environment. Once we get these things we were able then to discover new recovery paradigms, examine if they would be a good fit, adapting these new positive paradigms while making sure they keep us in alignment with our current or future commitments.
I believe when we do this we elevate our thinking which enhances our behavior. Our new behavior in turn validates this new paradigm or advanced paradigm. The program of recovery is more about the journey than it is about the destination. If we do not allow our thinking to evolve with a new positive approach or a more refined version of what we are currently doing, then we cannot move forward.
To keep an idea that would lack effectiveness doesn’t make sense and would keep me from accessing a higher-level recovery paradigm. The challenge people of recovery staying in the same place will eventually cause us to move backward. I find that very dangerous for a person of recovery, such as myself. Matter of fact, referring to last Thursday’s The Check Up podcast (recovery stagnation) staying in the same place can cause us to become emotionally, spiritually, and or physically stagnant. We won’t stay stagnant for long. We either get better or we get worse.
I hope you enjoy Part 2 of 2 on Recovery Paradigms. Please join us on Podbean, ITunes Podcast, Spotify, Stitcher and Google Play. We have fresh content every Monday and Thursday

How to avoid STAGNATION in your recovery.
Stagnation is defined as the state of being still, or not moving, like a sitting puddle of water where stagnation attracts mosquitoes.
The root of stagnation is the Latin word for "standing water," stagnatum.
Stagnation refers to the failure to find a way to contribute. These individuals may feel disconnected or uninvolved with their community and society.
A rut is often a result of stagnation and is a habit or pattern of behavior that has become dull and unproductive and it is often hard to change.
In recovery over addiction and other behavioral challenges, stagnation can be very precarious.
Most all of us, at one time or another, hit a snag or get slowed down. This is often a temporary event and we get moving again rather quickly.
Stagnation in personal recovery can get dangerous because it can cause emotional pain and mental frustration. When we experience this type of pain/frustration it can lead to a spiral and a subsequent relapse.
How do we get out of the Rut or reverse the stagnation?
Decide we don’t want to be there anymore
We need to take our own inventory in the 4 dimensions consisting physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. If you find it is more than one dimension focus on the one that will likely influence the other.
It is often very helpful to bring in a trusted person who can help you stay objective
Put together a course of action
Follow said course
Monitor progress while adjusting as you move forward
When we implement these notions and activate the steps we will have the results we work for.

Today’s podcast is on paradigms. I was first introduced to this term back in 1993. I was seven years into my personal recovery and was looking for a way to grow beyond the material I was currently involved with. That material was working; it was just I wanted more. I knew there was more out there for me to go get it, I just didn’t know what it looked like or how to find it. A friend of mine had introduced me to Stephen Covey. Stephen had just produced “principle centered leader ship”. It was the first time I had heard about a paradigm. Interestingly enough it was exactly where I wanted to be and what I wanted to understand. I was looking for a new way of thinking. This is what this podcast is all about. In this podcast, I laid the groundwork for next week’s podcast. I asked some questions, I introduce the listeners to terminology and I challenge us to come back with our own answers. Quite simply a paradigm is a standard or a set of ideas a paradigm is simply a way of looking at something the word as I am reading the definition from vocabulary.com it’s that it comes up a lot in academic scientific and business world we’re going to look at it from a psychological, behavior and internal position. I like what Mr. Covey says in that a paradigm is a “mental map”. Like any directions they are best accompanied by a map. The more defined and accurate the map the more likely I am to get from point A to point B. In this podcast, I asked the questions, what is a paradigm, list some practical examples of paradigms, how they affect us negatively and positively, identifying erroneous paradigms, removing/display paradigms that aren’t consistent with our direction, commitment or environment and finally how to adopt new positive paradigms that are in alignment with our direction/commitment/environment. Once we address these we will then have a fuller understanding of Why we are at where we are at with our present thinking, if it’s not where we want to be, then what paradigm change do I need to make to get there. I hope you enjoy the podcast. I hope you have a wonderful day.
