Transformation & Business Leadership from the Competitive sideline

View Details

Interview with Michael Cole: S5E12Pennsylvania born and raised. Mike always knew he wanted to stay in PA. and as the youngest child he also found his passion for competitiveness. These two things gave him the opportunity to thrive in wrestling and to go to college locally.

He attended Clarion University where he received his Bachelors and his MBA. While at Clarion he was 2X All-American and made it to the Olympic trials' finals.

When it was time to hang up the wrestling shoes, Mike went into the corporate world. He had a plan though. Mike always knew he wanted to follow in the path of the many coaches that he learned from and admired.

At the end of his business career, Mike retired as the Managing Director of Technology at Morgan Stanley. While others think of hobbies, he knew exactly what was next.

Mike is now the Head wrestling coach at Bethlehem HS, where he was given the award as Coach of the Year.

During my research on Michael Cole, I came upon an article and saw a quote that every new leader can learn from. This is when he started his high school coaching.

"My idea is, I'm not going to change anything until I learn everything that is going on".

Great advice.

Interview with Eric Kussin: S5E9

After a successful career that started at the NBA League Office, and led to senior management positions with a number of professional sports teams, Eric’s mental health took a sudden and rapid decline.

Due to unresolved personal life traumas he failed to appropriately address at a younger age – life experiences he was unaware were affecting his mental health – Eric developed a severe bout of PTSD, along with symptoms of anxiety and depression. This fall came essentially “out of nowhere” and left him almost permanently in bed, and with severe cognitive impairment, for just over two and a half years. Once he found a way to climb out of his abyss, he vowed to spend the rest of his life focused on changing the global conversation through mental health advocacy.

It wasn’t until he met practitioners who taught him methods to actually heal his body and central nervous system, that he began to improve and get his life back. He is determined to spread his message: that EVERYONE in the world is affected by life’s inevitable traumas and stresses. We can’t escape them, as they are part of the human experience and they impact us on many levels. Mental health exists on a continuum, with some simply experiencing more severe declines than others over varying periods of time in their lives (and/or being more genetically predisposed to such declines). Because of this, his view is that we should all be open and accepting of those who need help, because we’re one community in this “crazy” world, all fighting our own unique, but often similar, battles.

Interview with Trenell Walker: S5E8

At the tender age of 14, Trenell Walker experienced a tragic accident playing high school football that left him paralyzed from the neck down. In his eyes temporary defeat does not mean permanent failure, because nothing beats a failure but a try.
He tried a bad attitude. He tried blaming others. Things changed for the better by trying 3 things that he will teach you such as developing a positive attitude, setting goals and building winning relationships. Desperation turned to inspiration giving birth to a spirit that will never give up until he is taken up.

He is now a Ziglar Legacy Certified Trainer, speaker and author.

Interview with Travis Wilson Travis Wilson

Travis Wilson hails from Salisbury, North Carolina. A 2011 graduate of Liberty University, Wilson majored in Sport Management. During his time at Liberty, he played three years of intramural basketball. He also served professionally as Assistant Girls Basketball Coach for Trinity Academy of Raleigh in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Over the years, Wilson has matured and surrendered to a call to ministry. For years, he says he ran from this calling because of the challenges he witnessed his father facing as a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. However, he came to realize the value in serving in this capacity despite the obstacles. After experiencing a life full of ups and downs, he came to recognize an undeniable desire to honor, glorify, and obey God in ministry. Now, his goal every day is to make a positive impact for God’s glory in this next generation's lives.

Coach Keith Drysdale is founder of Count the Bucket Basketball youth development basketball training and mentorship. Count The Buckets' mission statement is to pave a gateway of opportunities to grow on and off the court. As a walk on D2 shooting guard at LIU CW Post, Keith was able to master the basics from a phenomenal coaching staff led by Tom Galeazzi. It led to a two year pro career with the Westchester Phantoms. Coached by former WNBA guard for the New York Liberty, Teresa Weatherspoon.

In his own words:
Coach Keith Drysdale, founder of Count the Bucket Basketball Youth Development Program and shooting school was established in the fall of 2016. Just a kid from the Bronx that fell in love with the game of basketball at the age of 7. One day the TV was on and saw something that had energy, and before you know it something drew my attention. It was the sound of the net when it went through the basket. I just know it looked so pretty going through the hoop that I wanted to go to the basketball court and make that same sound every time.

I attended Grace Dodge High School, a small school in the Bronx. I made the team my junior and senior year, averaging 21 and 24 points per game.

I earned a two year degree in Micro Computer Applications at Sullivan County Community College and only played one year. Then I enrolled at Long Island University at CW Post, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Management and Technology. I also played for the CW Post Men’s Basketball Team. I then went on to play basketball professionally under former WNBA coach Teresa Weatherspoon for the Westchester Phantoms from 2007-2009.

Basketball is more than a sport to me, it's a community of a team that have different skills and passion for the game that build a team of opportunity's that can take you across the globe.

In 2019 Coach Keith earned a Youth Development Certified USA Basketball Gold Coach License, "The USA Basketball Gold Coach License enhances the previous NCAA program, that provides more value to coaches and event operators.” The USA Basketball Gold Coach License is a program that provides basketball education and training to coaches while ensuring the safety of young people in the sport

Coach Keith, specializes in increasing your shooting percentage significantly, which start out with footwork and balance.

Cracking the Stress Secret: Interview with Dr. Amir RashidianAmir A. Rashidian was born in Iran in 1974. He was 5-years old when the rioting began, and the government was overthrown. Iran became the Islamic Republic of Iran and the world as he knew it changed. He still remembers the gruesome violence of that time and although several decades have passed, he can recall the scenes like they occurred yesterday.
Before leaving Iran, Amir’s dad wanted to teach him about poverty and life in the underprivileged regions of Iran, the villages in the foothills of the Elburz mountain range. In one of those villages, Amir was witness to a young woman who had gone into labor. The midwife told her and her husband that the baby was not alive, and the young woman would likely not survive. That woman died in her husband’s arms because there were no doctors in that village. Amir decided at that moment to commit his life to become a doctor, to saving lives and preventing unnecessary death.

In America, driven by his dream to become a doctor. During his sophomore year at GWU, Amir’s father began to suffer from nerve damage and spinal cord compression in his neck resulting from degenerative spinal arthritis. This severely painful condition had caused Amir’s dad to lose function and control of his arms and hands. They consulted with three neurosurgeons who all agreed that Amir’s dad needed an invasive high-risk neck surgery. Fortuitously, they came across a chiropractor who claimed he could help Amir’s dad without drugs or surgery. After 6 months of chiropractic holistic care, Amir’s father was free of all pain and full function had been restored to his arms and hands. This incident is where Amir got his passion for holistic healthcare and disease prevention.

Amir is the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Chiropractic Center focusing on high-tech diagnostics to detect and correct disturbances in the nervous system. A very active speaker at corporate events, conventions, and churches, he is also frequently interviewed by the local TV, radio, and newspaper.

Solo Episode: The Telescope EffectEver look in the sky on a really clear night and see all the stars in the sky? You marvel at the beauty and then you focus on a spot. It can be the brightest star or the big dipper or Orion's Belt or any of the millions of stars or planets in the sky. You get lost in the beauty. You didn't do anything to focus on that point yet it seems everything else disappears when you are focusing on that one spot in the sky.
This is the telescope effect.

Listen in and see how we should reverse this so we can see the larger picture and help us grow.

A Product That Changed a Life In More Ways Than One: Interview with Gary Stern

Born in Baltimore, MD.
He and his mom ended up in a small town near the Kennedy Space Center on the Atlantic Ocean.

He was constantly in the ocean where he learned to surf and sailboard. He'd get to visit his brother in Colorado where he got the snowboarding and mountain biking bug.

Gary, graduated as a Physical Therapist from the University of Florida. He had every job imaginable to help pay the bills. Lawn service, landscaping, restaurant, retail, construction - the list goes on and on. He had the opportunity to work with professional athletes and public figures from all over the world at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, CO, quickly establishing a reputation for helping these patients extend their careers.

Life's trials weren't over yet though. His father died of cancer in May of 1998 and I moved back to Florida to take care of his mother who was also diagnosed with cancer. He was blessed to meet his wife Danielle soon after moving back to Florida. He got married 2 years later. He went into pharmaceutical sales working for GlaxoSmithKline in an attempt to increase his salary while allowing more flexibility of my schedule to care for his mom. She passed away in May of 2000.

He needed an outlet and quickly found one in cycling. Training and racing became his "therapy". He went on to race successfully for 15 years, racking up numerous wins in mountain biking and road racing including 5 Florida State Time Trial Championships. This led him to meeting his coach and good friend, Simon Kessler. He never realized how important this meeting would be to his life's direction.

Simon called him up and asked him to take a look at a product he was suggesting to his coaching clients.

That became a life-changing journey! Gary was able to "retire" from his pharmaceutical career and never look back. He had the opportunity to travel all over the world to share the message of time and financial freedom.

Special Topic Episode: Goals: Getting a Fresh StartWith the new year approaching everyone is setting goals. So, what better way to end this year than to talk about it. I bring back Coach Bru to chat about best practices on goal setting.

John Brubaker is a highly sought after keynote speaker, award-winning author and executive coach known for his unique approach to performance enhancement. He has front line, high-stakes, high-stress experience as a championship coach. His 12 year coaching career ended with him getting fired – on his birthday! This experience taught John all the powerful lessons of coaching: teamwork, setbacks, strategy, and implementation – but equally the importance of balancing your life.

Coach Bru’s programs are based in real-life and are road-tested. John has devoted the past 20 years as a coach, bringing together and building on the combination of his life experiences to help leaders and teams not just move to the next level but to Stadium Status.

Chin Up Chest Out was founded in 2019 by John Brubaker.

In 2019 Brubaker was hit with a string of injuries and that took a toll on both his physical and mental health. Spending much of the year in therapy, he began using the motto “Chin Up Chest Out… Move Forward” to push himself and stay positive. No matter what you’re going through, keep your chin up, chest out and move forward.

The phrase became more than just a reminder for him. It became a mindset in dealing with adversity and he felt it’s positive impact in every area of his life. So, he wanted to share that mindset and message with the world to enable others to reap the same benefits. This was the genesis of Chin Up Chest Out apparel company.

Our goal is to have our clothing inspire you to live life with a Chin Up Chest Out mindset.

Interview with Golf Mental Coach Jim MorrisonJim Learned to play golf when he was 12 years old. In high school he played golf, basketball and ran cross country. But running around with the wrong crowd and having a problem with substance abuse took him away from what he loved. Being 1 of 5 children, he felt like he was letting his parents down.
Jim decided to change his life and signed up into the Navy. Here Jim learned discipline and structure. He also came to the idea that he wanted to go to college and get back to playing the game he loved, golf.
After college he decided to try to make the pro circuit. Here he found the difficulties of making the pros, but he also found where his passion lied. He loved teaching the mental game.

Turning His Lifestyle into a Career: Interview with Bobby "Solez" TaubFrom Cortlandt Manor, NY, Bobby always loved baseball and basketball. He played both in high school but in college it was basketball. He played for a year and because of a situation with the basketball team there was no second year.
But it was his entrepreneur class that gave him the best advice. You see Bobby had a side hustle before anyone knew what a side hustle was. Bobby was buying and selling shoes. So, he left college and continued his business. He added gaming and also started using his influence to promote brands for companies.

Paying it Forward: Interview with Former Arkansas DL Marcus ShaversMarcus Shavers is the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at McKinney High School. Marcus grew up in Allen, Texas and graduated from Allen High School.
But his journey just to just staying in Allen was a not easy. Thanks to the good heart of his friend, Tylar Fransisco's dad, Larry Fransisco who took him into his home so he could continue to stay at Allen HS. The only thing Mr. Fransisco wanted was that when given the chance, Marcus should pay it forward.
Excelling in football, he was highly recruited and accepted an offer to the University of Arkansas where he played D line.
After graduation, Marcus found a job coaching high school football and did pay it forward by taking in his younger brother. He knew how important stability is for children.

Pro Skateboarder to Private Equity Firm Owner Mikey Taylor

"Mikey first found success with nearly two decades as a professional skateboarder. Early in his career, he was already thinking about life after skateboarding, which led him to become a co-founder in Saint Archer Brewing Company. This San Diego-based craft beer company saw great success, which caught the attention and lead to a multi-million dollar purchase by MillerCoors in 2015. With a unique perspective being an entrepreneur and skateboarder, he brings a unique take to real estate, one driven by community and purpose.

Commune was created by individuals seeking financial-freedom through real estate investing, with an understanding that as a community we can achieve far greater results. With a stronger-together culture, the exponential purchasing power allows for investment opportunities that would otherwise be unattainable.

Our purpose is not complete by just making money. At our core, the purpose is doing good by doing well, educating our community on finance and working to leave a lasting impact in the cities which we build or improve infrastructure.

Creating a Commune legacy is what we do, Real Estate is how we do it and we encourage like-minded investors to join us in our journey."

Leadership Lessons from Coaching and Business: Interview with Cathy AndruzziHer passion for basketball blossomed on the playgrounds of New York City. Later, as a player at Queens College, she led her team to a #2 national ranking. Andruzzi subsequently moved into coaching at Wagner College and after two successful seasons, headed to East Carolina University (ECU) where her courtside strategies put the Lady Pirates on the map. She led ECU to the school’s first and only AP Top 20 ranking and NCAA Tournament appearance. During her stint at ECU, Andruzzi served as creator, executive producer and on-air talent for the Cathy Andruzzi Show, the nation’s first weekly women’s basketball coach’s television and radio show.
Andruzzi next ventured into the corporate world where she cut her teeth in the highly competitive environment of retailing. It was here that Andruzzi honed her skills in business and marketing as owner-operator of six successful Domino’s Pizza franchises in New Jersey. She was only the fourth woman franchisee in Domino’s Pizza history.
Integrating business, sports and the media represented a natural progression for this strong communicator. As a television basketball analyst in 1996-1997, Andruzzi produced and marketed the Women’s Basketball Show and The Game of the Week, a national package of women’s basketball games. She also created and secured the sponsorship for the first TV special devoted to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, The Dial NCAA Women’s Tournament Preview Show. Strong contacts and a top-notch reputation persuaded executives of the American Basketball League to tap Andruzzi as the General Manager of the Philadelphia Rage in 1997.
Andruzzi returned to the business world where she is managed her own consulting firm, Druzz Ltd., through which she is a strategic advisor for several organizations. In 2015 she consulted Rutgers University on the development of the Global Sports Business Masters Program where she provided direction and strategic advice relative to launch. She became a faculty member of the program where she taught Sports Leadership and Ethics. Andruzzi is also a Sr. Associate Director for the DeVos Sport Business Management Program at the University of Central Florida and an Advisor at University of North Carolina Kenan Institute Sport Entrepreneurship. During the Spring 2013 semester she was an Entrepreneur-In-Residence for the Sports Business Ventures course at the UNC.
Now Cathy is a Leadership and Performance Coach. She provides executive leadership coaching to senior leaders and teams in their organizations.

Following 2 Passions, The Navy and NASCAR: Interview with Jessie Iwuji: S3E12

In all things Jesse Iwuji does, there are two constant elements: his devotion to service and his inspirational nature to many. Jesse went from competing at the top level of Division-1A college football to rising the ranks of the military as a Lieutenant Commander and is now the only current driver in all of NASCAR at the national levels that actively serves his country as a US Military member.

It has been key for Iwuji, who is currently serving in our country’s reserve fighting force, to honor his country while pursuing excellence in the business world as a business owner and on the track as a driver. It should come as no surprise that he has championed companies and charities that give back to our men and women in uniform.

Jesse is also a big supporter of NASCAR diversity, equity, and inclusion. Today he is one of two African Americans competing at NASCARs national level of racing. He was honored by NASCAR for two years in a row – the Diverse Driver of the Year Award. He is well versed both on and off the track!

It is fair to say in many ways Jesse is a first in NASCAR. While clawing toward the top tiers of NASCAR, Jesse Iwuji continues to take us all along for a memorable ride showing those who dare to dream that life truly rewards those who stay strong enough, long enough.

Interview with NFL Strength Coach Jeff FridayFriday began his coaching career at Northwestern in 1992 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. It was here where Jeff looked for opportunities to learn from any professional organizations that would talk to him while traveling with the team. Here is where an opportunity to help with some training within the Minnesota Vikings organization caught the eye of players and coaches. A few of years later he received that call.
Friday spent 3 seasons (1996-1999) with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He then went to the Baltimore Ravens (1999-2008) as the head strength and conditioning coach.
Friday joined the United Football League in 2009 as the Director of Strength and Conditioning. He served one season and then in 2010 Friday returned to the AFC North to become the assistant strength and conditioning coach of the Cincinnati Bengals during the tenure of head coach Marvin Lewis. He was released in 2019 after the introduction of its new head coach.
Jeff joined the short lived XFL as the strength and conditioning coach of the DC Defenders.
Jeff has just released his new book Built 4 Winning: Crossing the Thin Line Between Good and Great in Sports, Business and Life.

Ray Zahab is a Canadian Explorer, ultra distance runner and Founder of non-profit impossible2Possible. A recent recipient of the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada, Ray is an Explorer in Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 2015 Canadian Geographic recognized Ray as one of Canada’s Top Explorers. He has ran 17,000+km across the world’s deserts, and unsupported expeditions in some of the coldest places on the planet.

On November 1, 2006, former “pack a day smoker” turned ultra runner Ray Zahab and two friends, Charlie Engle and Kevin Lin, set out on an expedition to cross the Sahara Desert by foot. 111 days and 7,500 kms after leaving the coast of Senegal, Africa they completed their journey by stepping into the Red Sea.

In 2008, Ray founded impossible2Possible (i2P) (impossible2possible.com) an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, inclusion and participation in expeditions. Youth Ambassadors are selected from around the world, and then participate, at no cost, in all aspects of the expedition, from logistics and running to creating educational content and team support. All of the i2P Youth Expeditions have included various challenge based initiatives through an Experiential Learning Program, in which thousands of students participate as active ‘team members’ during the expeditions, from classrooms all over the world. This program and its technology is also provided at no cost to the students or schools participating. Since its inception, i2P Youth Expeditions have included 14 gruelling expeditions; Baffin Island, Tunisia, the Amazon, Bolivia, India, Botswana, Utah, Peru, Chile, Italy, California, Greece, Death Valley and Canada. The programs and expeditions are 100% free of cost.

He continues today with life as an adventurer and as a volunteer with impossible2Possible. Transitioning from an unhealthy lifestyle to ultrarunning races to ‘Running The Sahara’ would begin a lifelong journey of discovery. A journey of learning that some of the greatest barriers to achieving our goals are the ones we put upon ourselves. By breaking these down, Ray has learned that we are all capable of achieving truly extraordinary things…a message he continues to share with his two young daughters!

New Year Your Why, New GoalsIf you've noticed The last few weeks I have concentrated on why and goals. I have put a lot content on my Facebook Group Hey Coach! As well as Instagram and twitter.

Now I could do this whenever but since everyone uses New Years I will talk about it now. Its never too late though.

Everyone talks about setting goals but they never ask themselves why

I want to save money, workout, eat better

Why

Now some goals are fairly easy like I want to lose 5 pounds this month. You can do it without a why but you can get there faster with one.

The 5 whys is used in Six Sigma which is a tool for process improvement

But think of children. They always ask why, but why.

They do this subconsciously to get to the root cause

Go back to being a child

Ex.

I want to lose 15 pounds-Why

I will feel healthier-Why

So I can feel better-Why

So I can do more activities- Why

So I can meet new people-why

Because I'm bored and lonely

You need to do this with someone you trust will not give into your own BS excuses. If you need someone and cant trust anyone , then reach out to me and I will be more than happy to help.

When you have your WHY then set those goals, I have an accountability coach, Tami Matheny of the Confidant Athlete and we set our goals for the year , the month and for the next time we speak.

When you are starting set long term mid and short term goals but also set an easy goal that you can easily achieve. This will give you feeling of what it's like to achieve a goal. Funny but so many people don’t realize they achieve goals because they do it every day.

Do something like for 1 week you will get up on time without hitting the snooze or fix your bed before leaving the room. You will see how great you'll feel .

Then set another goal for the week the month and the year.

Also tell someone your goals. If you'd like, send me your goals for the week to Eric@heycoachreyes.com and I'll check on you at the end of the week.

And don’t forget, If you don’t achieve your goal it's ok set another one. And it's ok to feel frustrated, that means you care. Be worried when you feel it doesn’t matter. That's why you tell someone. To encourage you when you are down.

I hope this helps you set your goals and grow.

Interview with Reggie WilliamsReginald Williams was born on September 19, 1954, in Flint Michigan. The son of Elijah and Julia Williams. Williams was a star athlete and student at Flint Southwestern High School. He played competitive football and also wrestled. The recipient of an academic scholarship, Williams was a three-time All-Ivy League linebacker in football and Ivy League heavyweight wrestling champion in 1975 at Dartmouth College.

In 1976, Williams was drafted in the third round by the Cincinnati Bengals, for whom he played 14 seasons, (including two Super Bowls, XVI (1981) and XXIII (1988)).

Williams recorded 16 interceptions and 23 fumble recoveries, still a franchise record. During his career Williams amassed 62.5 sacks, the second most in the team’s history. In his final two seasons with Cincinnati, he was appointed to an open seat on the Cincinnati City Council in 1988 and was elected for a second term in 1989 on the Charter Party ticket.

Williams has received numerous honors, including selection to the NFL All-Rookie Team (1976), the Byron “Whizzer” White Award for Humanitarian Service (1985), and the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award (1986). He was also named Co-Sportsman of the Year in 1987 by Sports Illustrated.

He is a member of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame, the Greater Flint Afro-American Hall of Fame, and the College Football Hall of Fame.

After retiring from the NFL, Williams joined the World League of American Football as the Vice President/General Manager of the New York/New Jersey Knights. He later rejoined the NFL, where he conceived and opened the NFL’s first Youth Education Town (YET) in Los Angeles.

Williams was hired as director of sports development for Disney on April 19, 1993. In the mid-1990s, he oversaw the creation of Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, a state-of-the-art 220-acre (0.89 km2) multi-sport facility that opened on March 28, 1997, and hosts more than 180 athletic events annually in some 30 sports. By 1998, he had become Vice President of Disney Sports Attractions, where he oversaw a newly created sports and recreation division that merged Walt Disney World Resort Recreation, Water Parks, and Disney Sports Attractions. The latter included Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, the Walt Disney World Speedway, and Walt Disney World Golf. Williams retired from Disney in November 2007, stepping down to focus on rehabilitating his legs from damage sustained during his playing NFL career.

Interview with Tricia Roos

Tricia Roos is a Dallas wife and mother who built a winning career in sports and high school admissions but found her greatest victory in loss. Against the advice of medical experts, Tricia carried full term a child she was warned would die at birth or before. That season Tricia’s team won every game, the child in her grew, and eventually she held and loved the daughter who wasn’t supposed to live. In six days of a brief and remarkable life, Annabelle Roos rewrote the medical chapter on a chromosomal condition called Trisomy 18—giving life to a story that galvanized a large high school, a big city, readers of When Wishes Change, and audiences nationally.

When Wishes Change is about how her wish for a healthy baby girl changed into something more beautiful than she could have ever dreamed.

More than that, the lesson of allowing your wishes to change transcends the loss of a child. We can all learn that through change, we can love deeper, go further, and grow more than we can ever imagine for ourselves.

Tricia has a deep passion for sharing her story with others as well as sharing her knowledge of branding, marketing and educational consulting with others.

Interview with Jon Torine
From Momouth County, NJ Jon always loved sports. But what he found was he loved the strength and conditioning aspect of the sport more. It was at Springfield College where a baseball coach got him in touch with a strength coach in the NFL.
Jon got an internship with the Buffalo Bills and eventually a full-time job.
First the Buffalo Bills, then the head strength and conditioning coach with the Indianapolis Colts.
Jon Torine spent most of his career in the NFL, first as a strength and conditioning coach for 17 years and then working with the NFL Players Trust Program to help former players transition to the next phase of their careers.

After the NFL Jon went out to tackle youth sports. Sports should be fun for children, not stressful. As Jon worked to educate and inform the town around the physical and emotional pitfalls of sports specialization, he soon found another way to pursue his passion.

Now Jon is an owner of i9 Sports, a franchise which focuses on fun for the kids and convenience for the parents.
Its mission is to help kids succeed in life though sports

Interview with Deshawn Anderson

As his mother said, Deshawn was born to play football. Deshawn was a star high school player and was sought after by numerous schools. He decided to go to a HBCU school, Norfolk State University.
Here he not only played football but found his love for education. After college he decided to become a high school computer teacher and a football coach, the two things he loved.
And as a coach he followed his mentor and high school coach and instill character and discipline into these young men. THIS is more important than football.

The quote he follows: ***If High School is the greatest moment of my kid's life, then I failed them as a coach.

Interview with Cory Camp

Cory Camp grew up a competitive swimmer, and for most of his life, that's all he really knew. In his senior year of high school, he found himself with a condition that no one could figure out. As he was looking at colleges, it was the coach from the University of Delaware who told him he didn't have to go through it alone. They would go through it together. He found out it was a condition in his heart and they were able to take care of it.
Upon graduating and his sports career ending, Cory realized that he wasn't prepared for life after sports. He found himself a bit overweight and having a drinking problem That was the turning point for him. He knew he had to turn his life around and used what he learned about himself as a swimmer to move forward.

Through fitness, and self-reflection he figured out a system that turned his life around. He found Flow. Now with his company, Forever Athlete, he is helping other former athletes find their flow state.

Interview with Dr. Matthew Raidbard Ed.D.Growing up Matthew always wanted to become a coach. So much so he would coach his brothers teams. After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in history and classical studies from Indiana University, Dr. Matthew Raidbard decided to pursue his dream of being a college basketball coach. His first college basketball coaching job was at Western New Mexico University, where he also completed his Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership. In 2018, Dr. Raidbard conducted a study on how college basketball coaches perceived themselves as leaders, finding that many coaches were unsuccessful because they lacked the necessary tools and training to be effective leaders. His findings inspired him to write this book and dedicate himself to helping coaches at all levels improve their leadership abilities so that they can be the best and most effective leaders for the athletes they are entrusted to coach.

Thomas R. Williams is the author of Permission to DREAM and The Relentless Pursuit of Greatness, Professional Speaker, NFL Player Engagement Ambassador, and Philanthropist.

As a professional speaker Mr. Williams is a member of The Jon Gordon Speaking team and communicates with great passion and purpose on “The Energy Bus” and “Training Camp.” He impacts his audiences by helping them create a successful vision which leads them to greatness.

One of Thomas’ main passions is coaching both college and professional athletes on the inevitable transition to life beyond the scoreboard. He is driven by his mantra, “Athletes are great people first, who just so happen to be great athletes. Greatness may have started with sports but it doesn’t end when you retire… GREATNESS is a lifestyle.” Thomas serves as an NFL Player Engagement Ambassador, teaching college student athletes about character, leadership and the NFL evaluation process.

When Thomas isn’t traveling the globe impacting lives, he is serving as the Director of “Pursuits of Greatness.” His nonprofit was developed to help college student athletes prepare for life after their playing career, by giving them custom tailored suits once the athlete has exhausted all athletic eligibility. This symbol of professionalism represents a new uniform that an athlete has retired, and is transitioning to their life of GREATNESS.

In 2008 Thomas graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in Sociology. Nicknamed The Hitman, Thomas was a captain on USC’s football team where he and his Trojan teammates had a record of 59-6. They won 2 National Championships and 3 Rose Bowls.

Lessons on Simplicity: S2E43

Do things have to be that hard? Most of the time it doesn't.
Trying to cancel a gym membership? How's that going?
Games on the line and the call is easy, but no let's try something else.

Why?

Simple things become difficult because you make it difficult to see the simplicity.

Interview with Ryan SchachtnerRyan was a collegiate baseball player who had dreams and a path to play professionally until a career ending injury sidelined him. With his dream of playing professionally over, Ryan had to pivot and figure out what the rest of his life would look like. Using the skills he developed over the years of playing sports, Ryan set out on his own and started his own financial planning firm. His firm, Carolina Asset Management, has grown to become one of premier firms on the East Coast. After 21 years of building a firm Ryan became known among professional athletes as someone that could “fix” their financial problems and translate the complicated world of finance into easy-to-understand fundamentals for success. His clients urged him to use his talent to develop a program that all student-athletes, regardless of professional aspiration, could use to prevent financial mistakes and level the playing field with many of their peers who have an inherent advantage in learning financial lessons. Ryan went to work to build a program that individual athletes, college athletic teams, and athletic departments can leverage to complete the “whole athlete” development; and provide education, lessons and resources that can be used to build financial legacy in order to gain the ultimate competitive advantage. Currently working with schools in some of the largest conferences in the country, Ryan provides education in a way that any athlete can relate to, the language of sports. We all have a financial “season.” Like in sports, a season is divided into many games. Each game comes with a lesson and an opponent to overcome. Ryan’s game plan is a full-proof protocol that you can use to beat that opponent.

With the Albany Empire, Arron won the Arena Football Championship.
His next stop was to the XFL until COVID hit. XFL closed, NFL closed, Arena football closed, and time was ticking.

This is a story of determination and positive mindset. Many of us would just fall over, but Aaron continues to have a positive outlook in life.

Lesson From The Legend of Bagger VanceWould you call a penalty on yourself? What line would you cross to achieve your goals. Or better yet, what wouldn't you do?
Before setting goals you need to know who you are and why are setting goals.

I took input from Tami Matheny and Jeff Heggie to get ideas on this topic.

Interview with Tobruk BlaineFrom Idaho, Tobruk, loved sports but gravitated to cheerleading. She was a high school cheerleader and then went on to cheering at Oregon State.
After graduation she was a high school and college cheerleading coach at Eagle and Rocky Mountain High Schools in Idaho and at Boise State University. Her high school teams won the Idaho 5A state cheerleading championships twice for Eagle High (2005, 2006 and 2008) and twice for Meridian's Rocky Mountain High (2010). The 2016 and 2017 Boise State teams were named the United Spirit Association's (USA) national champion in the Division I Small Coed cheerleading category. Blaine was named the 2006 state of Idaho Cheerleading Coach of the Year for leading Eagle High to its championship.

An effective fund raiser for the Boise State spirit squad program, she annually raised more than double the program's annual operating budget to support the university's cheerleading, dance and mascot's program activities.

A new football coach at San Jose State reached out to her to bring in the Beyond Football program to San Jose State.

In her role, she is responsible for enhancing the lives of football student-athletes through the university's new Beyond Football program. Student-athletes are encouraged to explore what is around them, identify interests, and inspire themselves and others through a culture of volunteerism in a greater community. Student-athletes will develop career-focused proficiencies and cultivate knowledge, relationships and skills necessary to establish a successful personal and professional life beyond the game of football.

Are you taking on extra and showing you are a leader and team player?
Or are you just doing what it takes to just get by?
Leaders do extra, go the extra yard and lead from the front.

Here are two stories that show what it is to lead.

Interview with Charles SchultzCharles has always been enthusiastic about the pursuit of excellence, both personally and coaching others. This pursuit started early in life as an athlete. Charles had a constant drive to improve that led to him having a high level of success in baseball. Inspired by his high school coach he learned the value of committing himself to a goal and improving slowly over time. The power of trusting the process led Charles to become a Division 1 baseball player at Youngstown State University where he was a 1st Team Freshman All-American, as well as a member of the first team to reach the NCAA tournament in school history. Charles still sits in the top ten of several offensive categories in school history.
Since completing his playing career he has continued to work with young up and coming athletes through training and coaching. Since 2007 Charles has trained and coached hundreds of athletes, helping many to achieve their dream of playing in college. It’s through training and coaching that Charles has discovered his true passion which is to teach and help others discover the greatness within themselves. Charles hopes to continue to develop as a leader and inspire the next generation of athlete and coach to become excellent in every aspect of their development.

Help Them Succeed! While coaching I've seen coaches pull players off the field after a mistake, yell at them, then throw them back onto the field and never tell them what they did wrong.

Funny thing is I've seen the same thing happen in the business world. Projects given out to the wrong people and the employee doesn't know how to do it and the supervisor doesn't help them learn. Set them up for failure.

I had an organization put acting supervisors in charge  of multiple employees and were given zero training.

Hit or Miss is not a training style, its a recipe for disaster.

An Example of What Leadership Looks LikeToo many times we hear what qualities do leaders have or if you want to become a good leader, these are the things you need to do. What I thought I'd do is give you a look into the high school coach I think shows you what leadership should look like.

Wins and loses matter in games but they don't tell you about the leadership of the organization. I have seen winning teams that had the worse leaders running the organization. These organizations don't last. They ride the coattails of the players or the assistant coaches.

Coach Mike Lynch was someone who put an organization together that believe will teach anyone al the leadership principles you need to succeed.

He is now working within the West Point Football program as an assistant coach on the West Point Sprint Football team. West Point is the builder of leaders and it is no coincidence that Mike Lynch landed there.

Discipline and Consistency

It's is said that to achieve any goal you need to have discipline and consistency, but how do we know what we are doing is the right thing.
How many times do athletes and business people do things because that's how it's always done and no one questions why.
Why have linemen run  the mile run and check their time? What does that tell you about his strength and speed? NOTHING!
Why do we have employees stop what they are doing to go to a meeting that only 5 minutes of the hour meeting pertains to them?

Let's work smarter by cutting out anything that does not move us towards our goals, the teams goals or our companies goals.

What is your 4 Minute MileAll I'm going to put here is Dr. Howard Thurman's words. Thank you once again to Chaz Jackson.

***The ideal situation for a man or woman to die is to have family members standing with them as they cross over. But imagine, if you will, being on your death-bed, and standing around your bed are the ghosts of the ideas, the abilities, the talents, the gifts, the dreams given to you by life. That you, for whatever reason, never pursued those dreams. You never did anything with those ideas. You never used those talents. You never used those gifts. You never took advantage of those opportunities. And there they are, standing around your bed, looking at you before you take your last dying breath, looking at you with angry eyes saying, “We came to you, and only you could have given us life and now we must die with you forever.”

Interview With Colleen Healy

What would you do to find out if you are good enough? This is the question Colleen Healy asked herself when she quit school and gave up a full ride at the University of New Haven to pursue a dream of playing basketball at UConn.
Her story was featured in Jim Roddy's book "The Walk-On Method" where she spoke about her journey from an amazing high school player to full ride to becoming a manager at UConn. She had no guarantees but she had a dream.
Through this journey she found life and business lessons that has helped her even now as the Co-Owner of ORCA Leadership and Director of Cardiovascular Strategy, Thought Leader Liaison, and Diversity & Inclusion Ambassador at Cytokinetics.
Her story is one of struggle and determination and could be a textbook on business strategies learned not from a classroom but from life and the basketball court.

***Interview with Larry Long Jr.

I AM SOMEBODY!*** Larry's mother would make him repeat this everyday, and if you know Larry, he lives this everyday.
Because of he's fathers work, Larry moved around a lot but his parents instilled many valuable lessons, like determination, belief in self and hard work.
In high school he was recruited to play baseball at the University of Maryland. Senior year he was named captain. After not making the pros, Larry tried opening up his own business. After a year he shut the doors, but Larry knows that to get the hits you also strike out. He went into IT work and moved to a couple of companies and is now the Director of Collegiate Sales at Teamworks.
Larry also has a YouTube channel and has a live show "The Midweek Midday Motivational Minute."
Larry lives life to the fullest and encourages others to do the same. He motivates, leads, and encourages in his position, in his life and in his volunteer work as a board member of Helius.

Many people can put up a good show but can't deliver. Or they deliver for others but fall short when it comes to themselves.

In this episode, we will take a short look into what it takes to be accountable to other and to ourselves.

In sports as well as business, you need to constantly adjust. From strategies to technique and from small adjustments to sometimes corporate structures one can never get away from adjustments. But this is nothing new for athletes. Athletes are constantly adjusting on the field and sometime there are major adjustments like position changes to coaching changes. This is why business adjustment for athletes is just a walk on the field.
