In the spirit of summer blockbusters, we're going off script as this third episode is all about the stories that inhabit the wonderful, wild and captivating silver screen instead of the written page. But we haven't forgotten books entirely as we hear how the fierce film professor, well known critic and classic movie enthusiast Michael van den Bos picked up a few very special books that turned a growing interest in film into his life's true passion.
Michael loves movies more than anyone I have ever met and he is a true critic: one who loves the art form he comments on, even when it doesn't love him back. If you've ever been to a screening where Michael has done the intro, you will know that his knowledge of films goes way deep and his attention to the quirky and crazy details behind every frame is unparalleled.
He has taught and lectured at the Vancouver Film School, Pacific Audio Visual Institute, Capilano University and he is the Program Consultant and Host of the Cinema Sunday series at The Cinematheque, Vancouver’s home of essential cinema, where he introduces classic family films as well as hosting events at the Vancity Theatre.
In the podcast, I mistakenly mentioned that Michael is hosting DANCING IN THE DARK PART 3 and REEL JAZZ PART 2 at the Vancity Theatre this December, when in fact those will be happening sometime in 2016.
However you can still get to see two great movie events this December, with one based on the great song performances in the movies called SINGING IN THE DARK as well as a tribute to Frank Sinatra on his centennial. While we patiently wait for the latest episode of the Story and the Story with Curtis Emde to make it out of the Valley of the Shadow of Technical Difficulties, I've been spending time recording new episodes at the new Inspiration Lab at the Vancouver Public Library with some of my favourite authors and friends. Here's a picture of me and a cute baby (aka our dear Calliope Rose) to distract you while waiting for the podcast.

On today's episode, bilingual novelist and poet Deborah AM Phillips shares her favorite books as well as her story of finding out she was adopted, how it inspired her first novel and her hard-earned wisdom on the sacrifices required to keep writing through all of life's busy seasons. [pause] Deborah's novel, Argonauta, is a multi-generational family epic set in Montreal in the time of the 1970 October Crisis, as two sisters discover their families are not what they seemed. It is a rich work of history and fiction, rooted firmly in the reality of Deborah's own journey with her biological and adopted families.
