Back of the Net is AFC Bournemouth's only weekly podcast where Cherries fan can listen to match analysis, features, interviews and behind the scenes information each and every Monday morning. We'll bring you fans vox-pops from the latest Cherries game, as well as providing our own take on proceedings in our Championship, FA Cup and EFL Cup campaigns. As well as featuring the first team, we'll go behind the scenes at the Vitality Stadium, as well as featuring other teams including the Women's team, the Development Squad, and the Under 21's. On Saturday, an enthralling encounter at Anfield was somewhat ruined by poor officiating throughout. Bournemouth succumbed to a 3-1 defeat on the day, but there were key moments at key times that played a big part in the game. With the game level at 1-1, the referee decided to award the home side a penalty which was dispatched via the rebound. A soft penalty to say the least, but did VAR get involved and inform the referee of his clear error? No. In the second half the ref seemingly "evened things up" when he gave Mac Allister his marching orders for a slightly mistimed lunge. In no world was it a red card offence! Did VAR get involved and inform the ref of his clear error? Again, no. On June 19th at 12:30pm, it came as a surprise to AFC Bournemouth and the wider footballing world that Gary O’Neil had been relieved of his duties as AFC Bournemouth head coach, just over a month after Cherries confirmed their Premier League survival. He was replaced, almost immediately, with Spaniard Andoni Iraola. O’Neil, who fell in to the job, had a remit to keep us in the top flight - he fulfilled that, and he did it with four games to spare. He took a side mentally shattered after a 9-0 at Liverpool, went on a long unbeaten run, and despite a blip in January - he enabled us to get over the line after a superb April which took the Premier League by surprise. But after 37 games in charge, the stats weren't pretty - he lost 20 games, with a 29% win percentage. Do these stats tesselate with Foley’s vision? Cherries fans, despite the elation of survival, have still been unsure what the identity is! In some games we went 3 at the back, some we went 4 at the back, and in other games - we were constantly shifting formation during the game - so does Iraola's arrival perhaps give the recruitment team a little more "meat on the bones" ahead of what could be a busy summer of transfer activity for the Cherries? Frustrated AFC Bournemouth fans react at full time after Cherries squander a two goal lead against Tottenham Hotspur, who netted three second-half goals to come away with all of the points at a dismal Dean Court. Boscombe looked favourites to romp to a famous home win before Tottenham Hotspur had other ideas, completing a remarkable turnaround for the away side. The Cherries looked offensively excellent in the first 45, and with a tremendous start to the second, we fans were hopeful of an unexpected three points, but costly errors and mental fragility caused the home side to sit back and invite the pressure - and Spurs didn't hesitate to take full advantage. AFC Bournemouth drew 2-2 in West London in a solid performance against Marco Silva's Fulham - however O'Neil's men will be rueing the manner of the goals they conceded, one of which was a penalty which was dubious to say the least. We gauged the reaction outside the stadium. Plus, Sam and Tom are at the Pear at Parley to go over the 2-2 draw. Whilst a draw is probably a fair result, it feels like yet another weekend where football took a back-seat as we once again are forced to discuss the intricacies and ineptitude of VAR! Despite the perceived "unfairness", Gary O'Neil is now unbeaten in six for the Cherries - incredible for a side that cannot be "competitive"! Dominic Solanke was the man of the moment in our two most recent games, as Boscombe took two from four to keep the promotion bid on track.

Firstly, he was at the double on Saturday after a ruthless performance against play-off chasing Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena, where his brace, together with Jamal Lowe's opener, ensured that Bournemouth left Warwickshire with three massive points. Subsequently - social media was the home to some forthright, frank, and fickle opinions - but how many of these are valid? Are we entitled? Two very different performances from Boscombe sees contrasting views from AFC Bournemouth fans, who firstly react at full-time after beating Bristol City 3-2 in a scoreline which possibly flattered the opposition. Aside from a few minutes at either end of the game, Bournemouth looked sharp and strong, and whilst the Robins showed spurts of impetus, the Cherries defence and Mark Travers were up to the task, with the latter providing a crucial save when it mattered!

Contrast this though with a poor poor showing in the Midlands.

Sam, Tom, Jeff and Steve react in a windy West Bromwich after AFC Bournemouth put in a poor showing against the Baggies at The Hawthorns, mustering not even a single shot on target. It was a display that lacked tempo, desire or technical quality, and whilst the winning streak under referee Keith Stroud's stewardship came to an end, the turgid run against Steve Bruce however continues.

Plus, reaction from the four buccaneering Cherries who travelled over six days to deliver humanitarian aid INSIDE Ukraine to people who people who have needed it the most,. The boys re-live the trip with their absorbing stories of concern, comedy, and coincidences.

Cherries fans jubilantly react after AFC Bournemouth beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium thanks to goals from Jaidon Anthony, Jefferson Lerma and Dominic Solanke.

Also, a chat with four Cherries fans who will be driving to Poland to deliver aid for the Ukrainian refugees. The quartet are working with the charity "Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine", and amongst them is former Cherries defender and assistant manager - now AFC Bournemouth summariser for BBC Radio Solent - John "Willo" Williams.

The journey will take four days, 2,500 miles, 13 hours of ferry crossings and 40 hours of driving to get the supplies to those who need them the most. They will be taking 2 vans which will mean that they can take 7 tonnes of aid. Travelling will be Willo, Simon Cable, Gary Francis, and David Joyner.

Their time is free, and will take two days off work and then drive through the weekend to get there and back; however, the fuel is expensive, the van hire, the insurance and incidentals are quite high and the closer they can get to our target, the closer they can get aid to those who need it the most.

Tigz was on the mic at full time to gauge the reaction as fans reacted outside the ground as Cherries got back to winning ways at Dean Court on Saturday after a 2-0 win against Wayne Rooney's Derby County, thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke and Jamal Lowe.

It was an improved performance from the lads, but also the crowd too, who got behind the boys for the full ninety - and as a result, there was greater synergy, and you could tell the energy reached the seemingly invigorated players.

Plus, final whistle reaction from supporters as Bournemouth dropped points against relegation threatened Reading at Dean Court. Dom Solanke opened the scoring for Boscombe after a well worked opener, however soon sat back and invited the inevitable equaliser after a second half where all the "control" belonged to the away side.

Annoyed AFC Bournemouth fans reacted at full time after two painful games to watch!

Firstly, Cherries lose 2-1 at Preston North End thanks to a winner from danger-man Emil Riis, which was compounded shortly after with the sending off of Scott Parker and Adam Smith. Jamal Lowe scored the first goal of the game after a Lilywhites defensive mix-up, but the home side equalised soon after with a sharp Cameron Archer finish, which laid the foundations for a deserved North End victory.

Then, in the week, baffled Cherries fans are yet again questioning how on earth we are managing to keep our heads above water after yet another abject performance against a side which, whilst dogged, were there for the taking. Peterborough are bottom for a reason, and whilst they showed some resolve, it was a match where AFC Bournemouth were ultimately the architects of their own demise - the 1-1 result was poor from us.

Lack of tempo, misplaced passes, no fluidity, no risk taking, and a lack of responsibility. Worrying times ahead of a crucial campaign run-in.

Exasperated yet ecstatic AFC Bournemouth fans reacted at full time outside Dean Court as Scott Parker’s men left it late to secure victory over Stoke City, thanks to last gasp strikes from Dom Solanke and Jamal Lowe.

It was a performance which was similar to Blackpool, with little bite or fight for large parts of the game - however during the latter stages, the blue touch paper was seemingly lit, and Boscombe threw everything against the ten-man Potters.

Thankfully - for us, the away side finally succumbed late on, much to the delight of the majority of the Vitality Stadium.

Cherries left it late against Blackpool on Saturday as Siriki Dembele popped up in injury time to notch a crucial winner that saw AFC Bournemouth form a cushion between second and third at the top of the Championship, after a last gasp 2-1 win against the Tangerines.

Two games, two very different reactions!

Firstly, Sam and Tom fans react after they witnessed AFC Bournemouth getting humbled on their own patch by National League Boreham Wood in a Sunday night to forget for Scott Parker's men.

The performance was bad. Manager of "the Wood" Luke Garrard suggested that they'd need to be at their best and Cherries would have to put at their best in order to cause an upset.

In reality, whilst AFC Bournemouth stuck to their side of the bargain (and some), Boreham Wood effectively didn't need to get out of third gear. A famous and well deserved result for the visitors tonight, but for Bournemouth, plenty of soul searching and looks in the mirror will be required.

At one point this season, Bournemouth were NINE points clear of the team in third, yet now, we are three points behind the team in second. It's all a bit tense, so let’s come together, breathe, and talk… so, to talk Tigers it’s Sam, Tom and Tigz.

This season has been dubbed the poorest in terms of Championship quality. On paper, we should be streets ahead, in reality, we’re just one of many teams that is contributing to the lack of quality in this division.

However, all is not lost, and we’ve got things in our own hands - but with 19 games to go, is it time we took an honest look in the mirror and just admitted to ourselves that there is a problem here?

We’re seeing a desire for controlling games. But what is “control”? Is control “safe”? Is control playing keep-ball when you could otherwise unleash the natural potential in your squad? Is it, overplaying the ball and trying to walk it into the net? Does that approach not give a bit of impetus to the opposition?

We take a comprehensive dissecting of Saturday lunchtime’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Luton Town with Sam Davis, Tom Jordan, Jeff Hayward, plus your thoughts after the game too!

It was a last minute goal from the Hatters that secured the points at Kenilworth Road and it was a sickener to say the least.

In the first half Cherries were outfought and didn’t lay a glove on Luton or look bothered by it. In the Second half, we had our period of control and looked good, but normally, if a team comes back from two down they go on to win it (if there is a deciding goal).

Bournemouth however - stopped, and it was the home side that fought to get the decider and we hardly had a kick. This is a hard one to unravel but we'll do our best!

After Cherries suffered their first defeat of the season on Wednesday night against a stubborn and clinical Preston North End, all eyes were on the visit of Swansea on Saturday - with a reaction needed against a team that often provide us with a stiff test both home and away.

In the weekend, the Lilywhites won 2-1, thanks to goals from Ben Whiteman and Ali McCann, which sandwiched a Philip Billing equaliser.

The loss also brought Scott Parker's side's five-match winning run to an end and cut their lead at the top of the table to two points as his former club Fulham recorded an impressive 7-0 win at Blackburn.

On Saturday though, Boscombe weathered an early spell of possession from the visitors to break them down with a Dom Solanke opener. But with Dom netting another, and Jaidon Anthony also popping up with a brace in the second half - Bournemouth increased the gap on third placed West Brom, who could only manage a score draw with Middlesbrough.

Victory, cemented by Lloyd Kelly’s first goal of the season, extended to 14 games the Cherries’ unbeaten start to the season, a feat achieved in 1961 when the club were in the third tier.

The match against the Bluebirds at the Cardiff City Stadium was always going to pose a unique challenge For The Cherries, not least because the majority of their side were over 6ft - but enough of that tall story, because a Mick McCarthy side is always going to well drilled, work hard, and they’ll also be dogged.

Cherries are honing in on the Play-Offs after two Easter wins, starting off with a 3-1 victory against Middlesbrough at Dean Court - a win that, whilst it saw no change of league position, leaves us on the coat-tails of Reading and Barnsley - who played out a 1-1 draw later that afternoon It was a game of three thirds at Dean Court, where Bournemouth started well before morphing into the formulaic style of dangerously sitting on a lead. Boro did what most teams have done and equalise, before Boscombe somehow found another gear for the remaining third of the game, scoring two... and arguably, they could have netted more. Then on Monday, we faced Blackburn, and secured a 2-0 win in a match which wasn't pretty, but saw the away side convert clinically twice, to see off a team whose form was spiralling out of control. We could have faced a Rovers side determined to put the wrongs right after their defeat to Wycombe, but aside from a silly gifted penalty, their threats were few and far between - but by no means did Cherries dominate - as for large parts we were poor! Cherries posted a £60m+ loss for the last financial year in some jaw-dropping figures that were released this morning. AFC Bournemouth also posted confirmation that its owner is in to the club to the tune of £160m - a concerning backdrop off the pitch to what has been a fruitless season on it. Shaun Teale is a player who many of us idolised for the two and a half seasons that he was with us. Bournemouth has always been a club that has been associated with fast free-flowing football, and as a result of that, we have witnessed plenty of incredible goals over the years from an array of strikers, and on this show - we have a couple of guests that have lots of experience of hitting the back of the net for both Bournemouth and their other respective clubs. They were both born in the South, are both 5 foot 9, and both have played for Cherries in the naughties and 2010’s… Firstly, Matt Tubbs... a player who netted 49 goals in 65 matches for Crawley Town - a ridiculous record! He had a loan spell at the Cherries in 2008 before completing a permanent switch in 2012, and his goals were a crucial part of AFC Bournemouth reaching the Championship! Plus, Josh McQuoid - a player that came through the youth at AFCB after a brief spell at Saints. He made 63 appearances for us, joined the Cherries first team set up in 2006 and his goal-scoring form got better as time went on. In November 2010, he scored a hat-trick for Bournemouth in consecutive home wins, something which evidently created a path for a move away to play Championship football where he joined Millwall! He returned in 2012, was alongside the likes of Franno, Ritchie, Grabban and Fraser up the leagues. An international for Northern Ireland too, he is currently plying his trade at Weymouth. We talk about their footballing experiences, loan moves, dealing with Jimmy Quinn, the Minus 17 era, the influences on and off the pitch (good and bad), the current side, being "rested" on the first game of the season, and much more besides... On Saturday night, Cherries weren’t exactly vintage. A change of formation, two personnel changes, and a familiar frustration for large parts of the game. But Junior Stanislas came good when needed. It was a tough watch at Kenilworth Road on Saturday as Cherries came away with a point from a very well oiled Luton Town side. Cherries looked leggy today against a determined and well drilled Hatters team, and throughout the the game, there was nothing to suggest that the stalemate would ever be broken, and with JT's side looking worn - the game ended in a draw. It was poor to watch, and the lack of composure in the final third was all to prevalent - we got in good positions, but couldn’t convert. What better time then, for a podcast to talk about it?! Bournemouth have never lost at St Andrews, and on Friday night in front of the cameras, this records continued in style, as Cherries put in a solid performance which showed a lot of promise to overcome Coventry 3-1. Whilst the showing was strong, the same typical traits of having large spells of possession without scoring were evident, but whilst the Sky Blues equalised in the first half, the second half was a different story. Indeed, the issues in the first half were corrected in the second with the help of midfield maestro Dan Gosling who scored a couple of goals to secure the win. It was a relaxed, it was routine, and it was a great victory against a team which had no Danjuma, no King, no Kelly, no Stanislas, and no Riquelme... positive signs as we head into the international break! Emotion has been raw this weekend after the news was announced that Eddie Howe has left AFC Bournemouth by mutual consent. The 42-year-old, who managed the Cherries in more than 450 games across two spells at Vitality Stadium spanning more than a decade, made the decision together with club officials on Saturday. In terms of placing moments in the box labelled "things you never thought you'd see", AFC Bournemouth's fall from grace this season is probably up there - however did you ever think the names Dominic Solanke and Andrés Iniesta would be mentioned in the same breath? No, I thought not... but, someone Sky Sports managed to do that as Bournemouth pummelled Leicester 4-1 at Dean Court. Boscombe gave themselves a lifeline at home in a 4-1 win which, to be honest... came out of nowhere. The first half witnessed a slow performance, a lack of belief, poor passing, lack of cohesion, and a showing which left us utterly bereft of confidence. Like a faithful family dog, it felt like we were about to be put down, but with a whimper and a slight wag of the tail - the revival took place, the S.A.S took over - Solanke and Stanislas, and we bounced over the line in a performance which might prick Watford's ears up somewhat. Whilst Jamie Redknapp says the technique for Solanke's second goal was a bit like Iniesta, Jeff Hayward was equally excited, albeit provided less of the knee-jerk comparisons - so in this podcast, he and Sam Davis dissect the 4-1 win at home to the former Premier League Champions. We're joined by Warren Cummings & Brian Stock, two players who graced the Cherries shirt for over 16 years between them. One a midfield maestro, the other an attacking full-back - they both found regular first-team football at Bournemouth, going through some lows and highs both on and off the pitch. Was Sean O'Driscoll ahead of his time? What was Warren's relationship like with Kevin Bond. Was Jimmy Quinn as unprofessional as others seem to suggest? And what of the current Premier League squad? Warren is a Scottish international who clocked up over 250 appearances for the Cherries. He put in great defensive performances on the pitch but also had a desire to get forward - he was full of energy on the pitch and stayed around with us for around ten seasons, so this meant that for his services to AFC Bournemouth, he received a testimonial match against AC Milan on 3 September 2016. Alongside him is Brian Stock, who wore the Red & Black for 6 six years under Sean O’Driscoll before linking up with him again a bit later at Doncaster Rovers where he spent another significant chunk of his career. AFC Bournemouth have had some momentous occasions in most of the decades that we've been a professional club. This decade it was promotion to the PL, in the naughties - the play-offs and Minus 17, in the 90's Wembley... but what of the 80's? Towards the end of this decade there was the famous promotion under Harry Redknapp, however, before that came an afternoon that many a Cherry will never forget, and this was the 2-0 FA Cup Third Round demolition of Man Utd at Dean Court. Firstly, Paul Morrell - one of Bournemouth’s best left-backs in the history of the club - a player who donned the Cherries shirt for 10 years, notching nearly 350 appearances for us. As well as numerous solid performances and a Harry Redknapp inspired promotion season, one of his key moments for AFCB was scoring the winning goal in the first Football League Trophy Final, then known as the Associate Members' Cup, when Bournemouth beat Hull City 2–1 at Boothferry Park on 24 May 1984. With him is John Williams (or Willo to you and me), the player turned assistant manager who played 117 games for the Cherries. It was announced last week that all elite football in England has been suspended until at least 3 April as a result of the spread of coronavirus, therefore AFC Bournemouth vs Crystal Palace this weekend is postponed, as are the matches for the rest of March 2020. So, with the league campaign called to a halt with the outbreak of CoronaVirus, many Cherries fans have been wondering what exactly they should be doing on a Saturday afternoon? On this podcast, there will be many C words being mentioned, including a bit of Crystal Palace, a slice of Cherries, a dash of Coronavirus, but don't worry there won't be any Boris Johnson... as Jeff and Sam go over recent events at the Premier League comes to a standstill. You can take out of this match what you want to. On the one hand there are the individual errors and potential season-defining injuries that might cost us dear, yet conversely, we continue to witness an AFC Bournemouth side boasting an increasing array of cohesion and attacking prowess. Either way, the game versus Liverpool might well be a sign of things to come. Cherries slipped to a 2-1 to a shaky Liverpool side - with the league leaders edging ever close to their first Premier League title. Callum Wilson opened the scoring for the Cherries after a well-worked goal, however individual errors gifted the home side two goals to ensure they went in at half time with the advantage. Despite AFCB forging a few decent chances, we were missing the cutting edge needed to convert, and the home side held on for an important three points. This week, Jeff Hayward is joined by Tony AKA Mr Tigz, and discusses the key points from the match, including VAR working FOR us at last, the Cookie injury, brave but costly individual moments, Mane madness, and Fraser's moment of Milner misfortune. On a day riddled with ridiculous weather, Cherries fans "hailed" Jefferson Lerma and Joshua King for giving Cherries a slim advantage at Dean Court before Chelsea's Marcus Alonso made the game all-square with a late sickener, giving both teams a share of the spoils - with each side believing that they possibly should have had more. In this podcast Sam Davis is joined by Jeff Hayward to dissect the match against Chelsea, one which feels like a point well made, but with other results going very much against us at the weekend, Eddie Howe's charges are sitting in the relegation zone on goal difference. Watford's astounding defeat of Liverpool means that we sit in 18th, but with winnable matches ahead, fans and management are still upbeat about our chances this season. That said, next we travel to Anfield, and the boys discuss the Reds recent dip, and wonder what kind of reaction we'll be faced with against Liverpool, in a fixture that will be incredibly difficult to earn anything from. Cherries lost 3-0 away to Burnley on Saturday in a match riddled with yet more ineptness from the Premier League. Whilst relegation might spell doom for most AFCB fans, to others there's a growing solace that should the worst happen, at least we'll be competing in a league where there's an iota of consistency. Alas, there's a long way to go, Bournemouth can still survive, and lets not take the credit away from Burnley, as they battered us for the last part of the game. However, we also must remember that they were up against a team that had been mentally scarred by decisions which have been labelled bizarre by journalists, presenters, pundits, former referees, and the players and management of both sides. Sam Davis is joined by Jeff Hayward as we discuss the match at Turf Moor, dissecting the inconsistencies and the misdemeanours that led to a three goal defeat. Is it a psychological weakness on AFCB's part? Perhaps. Maybe Jon Moss is at home chuckling to himself over a glass of red? Probably. Either way, the outcome of the game - whilst perhaps not indicative of proceedings at Turf Moor, bizarrely ended up flattering AFCB, with the home side producing chance after chance - and possibly deserving of more. As well as this we look forward to our next match against Chelsea, plus we consider what really could happen should the Cherries suffer the dreaded "R word" - would it be as terminal as we all fear?

On Sunday, Cherries travelled to Bramall Lane in another must win encounter but sadly emerged losing 2-1 after Sheffield United gave us a lesson in doggedness and determination. Conditions were awful throughout the country, and to many people's surprise - the game still went ahead. However, whilst the weather settled, the AFC Bournemouth side didn't, and, despite a good early start, the Blades deservedly came away as victors. Six changes were made and it was a below par AFC Bournemouth who somehow flattered themselves by producing a scoreline which, to the naked eye, suggests the contest was closer than it was. Martin Atkinson had a shocker with the whistle, but excuses aside, it was a poor performance from a shot-less Cherries side. Whilst it was a Saturday of misfortune for AFC Bournemouth aginst Liverpool, there was one player who was head and shoulders above the rest for the Cherries, with Jefferson Lerma shining bright in a performance which will have won him many plaudits. Sadly, the greatness of our Colombian Number 8 was overshadowed by a poor 3-0 home scoreline in a game which often looked like men against boys. Similarly, the day was not made much better due to a couple of injuries which has left Eddie Howe with a massive headache ahead of a pressing festive run of fixtures. There was a second victory which came on Sunday at the Hamworthy Club where an AFC Bournemouth fans team smashed More Buses 6-2 at Magna Road! The event was put on to raise money for Ethan's Wishes. You’ll have heard all about Ethan on a previous podcast, but also, it was to support young Cherries fan Jacob, aged 4 who has cerebral palsy.
