Relatable Leader is produced to benefit the following listener groups: 1. People employed by organizations in which they hold a leadership position, or those who have been identified as potential leaders. This is one of the main participant groups attending my face-to-face trainings. 2. People aspiring to build careers as professional trainers and who want real-life insight into what that career might look like. These people frequently reach out to me to learn how I became a trainer and the introduction episode answers that question in broad strokes. Also in this category are those already in training roles seeking support and a virtual peer group. 3. Another participant group who benefits significantly from my trainings are front line workers who are striving to reach their highest potential. They aren't wanting to take on leadership roles, but they are on board with my motto, "You don't have to be the leader to lead."
This podcast will provide you with insights into the topics I'm training, the challenges my clients face, the coaching I offer to overcome those challenges, and an overall view of one trainer's career.
This is no fast formula or quick step to success. If you are looking for a 3-month, 10 step program to a six-figure income, this is NOT the podcast for you, because that's not the life I'm living.

Now we face the one-year anniversary of this devastating event and face all of the emotions, stress, and circumstances we have moved through during this time. For me, it seems like the fire was last weekend and, at the same time, years ago..."fire brain" is real; difficulty concentrating, low energy, and emotional stamina running on empty, many of us have moved through this past year in a robotic state, doing what needs to be done as we operate in survival mode. No matter where you are at in this process, because of The Camp Fire or some other event which has caused you to face grief and loss, it is my hope this episode helps in some small way.

Training is expensive. When we take time to train employees who then quit, it gets VERY expensive. When was the last time you had an entire day to yourself to do or not do whatever you wanted to do or not do? Even though we have the weekend to, in theory, take a break, many of us don't take a break because that's the time to hurry up and accomplish all the things we didn't have time to take care of during the week. If you have kids who aren't old enough to take public transportation or drive on their own, you might be running them around. You might be facing weekend crowds to take care of errands. You might be hiding out in the garage or sneaking in some video games before you are faced with the "honey do" list. You might be scrambling to get the laundry done and get the house in order before the next weekly life cycle hits. Life can get busy and taking one day a week for yourself is important for your well-being.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how would you rate your emotional stamina today? Are you able to face unforeseen circumstances throughout your work day without getting so depleted you can't do good work? Are you able to face difficult coworkers without coming undone? When things take you by surprise, are you able to respond appropriately?
Are you taking good care of your body? Are you able to maintain productive energy throughout your entire work shift? Do you have the physical strength to get out of bed every day with enthusiasm and maintain your physical strength all day long? Are you as active as you should be? Are you proud of your body in terms of physical stamina? Are you sitting on the side lines with your kids or grandchildren, or are you actively participating in life?
Do you have financial freedom? What is your plan for getting out of debt? Do you prioritize paying off debt before making unnecessary purchases? Suzie Orman advises us to, "Live below your means and within your needs." Unfortunately, too many of us follow the, "when you make more money you spend more money," program and, as a consequence, we aren't building our savings and investments. Who is your financial mentor? If you don't have a financial mentor, reach out in some way to gain valuable financial training.
How would you describe your typical morning? Do you think your mornings set you up for a positive state of being on most days? When you arrive at work at your best, why is that? What have you done to create that success state? When you dread leaving the house or don't feel ready to face the work day, why is that? What actions are you taking or not taking that set you up to operate at less than your best? In this episode you will learn about 5 key points to consider as you establish a meaningful morning ritual.

Are your values driving you to be a champion in your life? Why should you define and communicate your boundaries? So you can feel respect and create a respectful environment for all of your relationships. When people do not communicate their boundaries, they sometimes fall into passive aggressive behavior patterns or end up resenting some of the people in their life because they aren't getting their needs met. Or, maybe you have communicated your boundaries, but people continued the same boundary-crossing behaviors that are not okay for you, forcing you to make a tough decision.

Several decades ago I photographed a tree on the coast that was the first photograph to sell at a show I had at the time. My Team Lead and Supervisor Readiness training is a three-hour workshop. In this episode you will hear excerpts from a recent workshop I facilitated for about 60 employees from the same organization. This organization works with animals after disasters, and since I love animals so much, I agreed to offer the training on a Sunday morning, which was the best time for them. This episode: songs and tips dedicated to people directly impacted by The Camp Fire. Anyone who has gone through significant loss knows how stress and grief can impact your thinking and ability to concentrate. In Butte County and the surrounding areas, the impact of 30-50 thousand people in shock and on the move continues to be difficult to comprehend. Those of you in other parts of the country and around the world who have lived through disasters know better than we do how long true recovery can take.
In my work as an employee trainer, I have seen the impact of The Camp Fire on many organizations and the people who work there. The people directly impacted by the fire and their coworkers continue to find their way, forced to make big adjustments. Our health care facilities are still overloaded, retraining programs for those who are now unemployed are struggling to keep up with demand, and many are still in limbo, unsure of what the future will look like.
I put together some tips for dealing with these crazy times and training participants were so appreciative, I wanted to do something to get the information out to more people. That led me to being the guest DJ on Terre Reynolds' show, Face the Music, on KZFR. In this episode I share coping tips and songs I hope will help, or at least be enjoyable, for anyone struggling with stress and grief as they move forward in their lives.

Defining specific criteria by which to measure the validity and potential profitability of your ideas is key to wise decision making. Highlighted is the vocabulary chapter in Gail Evans' book, "Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman". I encourage you to think beyond gender, and pay attention to how people in different roles respond differently to certain words and phrases. What one person considers to be a neutral or factual word, might negatively trigger someone in a different department because they might interpret the word from a different perspective. How might our relationships improve if we better understand negative triggers for other people, and agree to common use of terms within our organizations?

You will hear a situation that any of us might find ourselves in on any given day, and listen to the studio audience discussion about the right and wrong aspects of the situation. To quote the ethics expert, "Ethics is doing the right thing, even when you have to pay a higher price than you want to pay". Too many times people are promoted to leadership positions because they are good at the tasks of their front line job. This does not, however, mean a person has leadership skills. To make the situation even more challenging, many people do not benefit from leadership training. They are told to figure it out as they go, or told they will be temporary until someone is hired - and that can go on for year.

Today's professional is wise to be prepared to share quality content through your phone, tablet, or laptop. From the field or from your office, sharing information with your team or customers is a core skills for many of us.
Unfortunately, too many people are using email for this function, and the content is often lost to future employees. Instead, train your team to create short presentations and establish a training library of content for your department or company.
Establish a naming convention for your presentations and require everyone follow it. This makes it easy to search presentations and key words.

When I taught a diversity unit for one of my classes, I wanted it to be fun and interesting for students. In this episode you will hear a compilation of clips I used for one of the activities. Discussion afterward included how these clips made them feel and how the people highlighted correspond with people we might meet or work with today. Oddly enough, almost 20 years later, diversity continues to be a hot topic in our country and at work.
