Zech 4.1-14 | Ps Alex Huggett | 09.08.2026
Part of a series on BBC's mission and values
Summary
When the Israelite exiles returned from Babylon to rebuild the temple, they faced immense opposition, financial strain, and physical rubble. The project stalled for 18 years. It was against this backdrop that the prophet Zechariah received a vision of a golden lampstand continuously fed by two olive trees.
The angel explained the vision with one of scripture's most famous replies: ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of armies.’
The obstacles before the Israelites were a massive mountain, but God promised to level them. The work would not be completed by human strength, political power, or military might, but by the continuous, sustaining oil of the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, this vision points to Jesus Christ—our true Priest and King—who fulfils these offices and pours out the Spirit to bring the light of God's presence into the world today.
As a modern church, our vision of ‘God's kingdom transforming lives’ can feel just as overwhelming as rebuilding the temple. We face our own mountains of indifference, financial strain, and personal struggles. Yet, the promise remains the same for us.
Spirit-empowered ministry and living look like four things:
Whatever mountain you are facing today—whether it is financial struggle, wayward children, health battles, or simply feeling ill-equipped for God's work—the answer is not looking at our own lack of resources. The answer is looking to the One who can do anything through us.
The task is beyond us, but it is not beyond God.
‘Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord.’

Grace is offensive. Holiness is offensive. Yet people everywhere are hungry for both. This tension sits at the heart of the missionary journeys of Paul and Barnabas as they navigate the treacherous waters of sharing the gospel in first-century cities.
Following their progress through Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and beyond reveals a striking pattern. Initial enthusiasm often erupts into fierce opposition when the exclusive Jewish establishment realizes that God's chosen family is expanding to include "any old, pork-eating, idol-worshipping social reprobate." The message that anyone could come, repent, be baptized and experience transformation threatens those who've built their identity on being spiritually superior.
What's remarkable is not just the opposition they face—public denunciation, stoning, plots against their lives—but their extraordinary resilience. They knew when to stay and when to flee, when to endure and when to move on. Their teaching to new believers wasn't false promises of ease but the stark reality that "it is necessary to go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." This counterintuitive approach strengthened rather than weakened the early church.
The episode in Lystra highlights a particularly relevant challenge for modern Christians. When Paul heals a lame man, the crowd mistakes him for Hermes and Barnabas for Zeus, completely missing the true source of the miracle. In our spiritually curious but biblically illiterate world, even supernatural encounters won't automatically point people to Jesus without clear explanation.
Following Jesus will make your life better, but not necessarily easier. The spiritual disciplines Paul practiced—solitude, fasting, prayer—build the resilience needed for the journey. In a society increasingly lacking the ability to handle setbacks, these practices prepare us for the inevitable valleys on the path to the kingdom. The gospel still grows most vigorously not in the soil of comfort, but through the faithful perseverance of those willing to count the cost.

Ever found yourself at a crossroads, unsure of God's direction? Acts 15 offers something extraordinary – a blueprint for navigating life's toughest decisions when the way forward seems unclear.
The Jerusalem Council marks a pivotal moment in church history. Christianity stood at a crossroads: would Gentile converts need to become Jewish first to be saved? The answer would shape the future of the faith forever. What unfolds is a masterclass in spiritual discernment that remains profoundly relevant today.
Within this ancient controversy, we discover three powerful anchors for finding God's will. First, the early believers didn't isolate themselves but conferred together across cultural divides. While our individualistic culture often prizes autonomy and inner searching, the early church recognized the wisdom found in community. When facing significant decisions, they listened to diverse perspectives and sought consensus. Second, they grounded themselves in Scripture, with James declaring "as it is written" before quoting the prophets. Even when addressing questions not explicitly answered in the Bible, they found guiding principles in God's word. Finally, they paid careful attention to the Spirit's movement, recognizing God's favor where lives were being transformed.
The results were remarkable: "It was the Holy Spirit's decision and ours," they wrote, leading to a resolution that brought joy, unity and strengthening to the church. This three-fold approach—seeking wisdom from God's people, God's Word, and God's Spirit—creates a spiritual foundation for discernment that works not just for churches but for our personal lives too. Whether you're facing major life decisions or trying to navigate our complex cultural moment, this ancient wisdom offers a path forward. Together, these three anchors can guide us toward truth, even when the answers aren't immediately clear.

This episode provides a thoughtful analysis of how dealing openly with failure can lead to redemption and reaffirmation of faith.
Furthermore, we delve into the theological and spiritual significance behind choosing Matthias as Judas' replacement. Discover how God's faithfulness shines through, even when human beings falter. The story of Matthias reminds us that no failure is beyond redemption and that God’s plans are unshakeable, despite human imperfection. We conclude with a heartfelt prayer, expressing gratitude for being part of God’s enduring mission and seeking His ongoing renewal in our lives. Can the resurrection of Jesus be considered the cornerstone of Christian faith, or is it merely a metaphorical tale? Join us as we revisit Acts, chapter 1, and examine the monumental significance of Jesus' resurrection. By exploring the writings of Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, we delve into why this event is foundational to Christianity. We'll discuss how the resurrection validated Jesus' teachings and his claim to be the Son of God. Additionally, we scrutinize the Bible's role as a historical document, assessing its multiple accounts of Jesus' life and addressing the skepticism of non-believers.
Witness the transformative power of Jesus' resurrection through the acts of the apostles and the early Christian community. Once filled with the Holy Spirit, these early followers performed miracles, drove out demons, and exhibited a profound love that drew many to the faith. Today, the risen Jesus continues to work through the Holy Spirit, bringing transformation and unity among believers. We will discuss how the evidence of Jesus' resurrection is seen in the lives of those who follow Him, offering hope to a world in need. Concluding with a heartfelt prayer, we seek God’s guidance to be effective witnesses of His transformative power.

See the video introduction here.
In this message we unpack dichotomy between our love for the world and our devotion to God. The world, in this context, isn't just society or people but a system under Satan's control. We'll face head-on the hard questions around the types of love we profess, the pitfalls of worldly adoration, and how our affections impact our spiritual walk with God. We'll also equip you with the antidote — a relentless craving for the things of God and His approval.

We explore how to anchor oneself in truth, instead of getting swept away by the tumult.
The world we inhabit can often feel hostile towards Christian values. So how do we stand firm, ready for Jesus' return, and continue to bear witness for Christ even in the face of persecution? Drawing strength from Jesus' own words, we discuss how to prepare for these challenges, trusting the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding the necessity of being alert for Jesus's coming. Above all, we underscore the importance of doing the Lord's work and holding steadfast to our faith. Join us as we journey through these complex themes, praying for courage and commitment in these uncertain times.

We challenge ourselves and consider the space we've created for Christ in our lives. It's through this connection, this room we make for Him, that we can be fruitful in God's kingdom, and this episode will give you a fresh perspective on how to do just that.

Part 2 of the series "Staying Afloat When the Economy is Sinking"
Are you yearning to live a life marked by abundance and grace, rather than one driven by scarcity and consumption? We explore the deep well of the early Jerusalem church's radical love and unity. The book of Daniel has been used everywhere from Sunday school classes to prophetic end times interpretations. Daniel is a wonderful piece of literature with stories of God’s miraculous interventions as well as discussion of angles and demons and all manner of empires and kingdoms. At the heart of the book of Daniel is a young man who is a captive in a foreign land, who is trying his best to remain faithful and true to his culture and his faith. Daniel is in the very heart of the Babylonian empire in the King's court. While there he is attempting to be a witness to this pagan king about the goodness and greatness of Israel's God, all the while maintaining his integrity while being tempted in every way. This week we cover Daniel chapter one and two.

We are all affected by our past pain, there is a way through the pain into freedom
Before Jesus did anything, he was declared by God to be loved, and is His Son. By extension and through Jesus, we too are called into this relationship, sons and daughters of God.
Opposing this declaration however, the devil casts doubt with one word and a question mark. This doubt and questioning continues today, especially in the western world as we seek and ask, Who am I? Yet the world gives no answer, just more questions and options to choose from.
Michael unpacks these questions and more as we look at and are challenged to accept that we are first and foremost loved by God.
Job has hit rock bottom; all the pat answers from his 'wise friends' have meant nothing, and given no hope or relief. So while Job is still determined for Justice and Vindication,so much so that he tried to paint God into a corner, the book's focus begins to shift. From seeking Justice, into searching for Wisdom. So where is wisdom to be found? Is there hope for Job and for us? Is life just unfair or God's policies out of sync? While we don't necessarily get solid answers to these tough questions, we are reminded to trust God together while we ask them.
Genesis 9 begins with a familiar call from God to humanity "then God blessed Noah saying to them 'be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth (9:1). God makes promises to Noah on behalf of all humanity, that the earth will not be destroyed again. Once this is established, then God again calls Noah and his sons to a fruitful life on earth.
