In today’s world, community is desired but elusive. We live in an age of connectivity, but an epidemic of loneliness plagues us. As a result, people feel disconnected, uncared for, and unloved. This was not the case with the early followers of Jesus. They lived in a community where everyone felt at home, every need was met, and love prevailed. But is the way they lived even possible today?
One of the greatest joys of a believer is leading someone else to Jesus. Yet, one of the greatest fears is having the desire and the opportunity and not knowing what to say and do. But what if we could ease our anxiety with an example or blueprint we could follow?
We often hear: Wow! The Spirit was present or showed up today. But how do we know when the Spirit shows up and works among us? The early Church gives us a few answers.
We all face decisions in life—big or small, daily or life-altering. From career choices to relationships, financial decisions, and spiritual callings, we often wonder, "What is God’s will?" If God knows best, what does it look like to let him choose?
Before it became a popular meme, “Let’s Go!” meant something different and eternal to Jesus and his followers.

Ever play, “Go Fish?” Jesus certainly did with those who followed Him the closest throughout His ministry. Except, when Jesus said, “Go Fish!” He wasn’t talking about playing cards. Rather, He was talking about the “point” of disciple making, and the culmination of all that He had taught His disciples to do, value and replicate. Introduction and RecapGood morning, brothers and sisters! It’s great to be with you this morning here already at the end of January as we continue our walk through the Gospel of John. We’re going to be looking at John 6:22-71 and there’s kind of a lot that happens here, and if we had more time, I’d say that we should all just stand, listen to the reading of it and stick around for lunch to discuss it, but we’re not really set up for that, so here’s what we’re going to do. First, I’m going to summarize this section for you, then make some notes, and then walk through some application. So let’s dive in.
The Text and Initial NotesFirst, you have to remember, particularly if you haven’t been here for a week or two, that this section of the Ministry of Jesus occurs after three things:• First, this passage is on the back side of The Feeding of the 5,000 literally a day earlier in verses 1 – 15, which makes it sound even crazier that the crowd asks Jesus for another sign, right? It’s only been since lunch yesterday and you already want another sign?• And it’s also on the back side of the crowd that He fed trying to force Him to be their King in verse 15, which seems kind of noble at first, but isn’t what Jesus had in mind and so He escapes the crowd and withdraws into the mountains.• All of this was also on the back side of Jesus Walking on the Water in verses 16 – 21, which you have to know probably still had the disciples freaking out because… well… on top of the fact that that just wasn’t normal behavior for anyone they’d ever met before, it was also kind of a huge topper for what had already been a banner day.• And finally, this was the first of what are called Jesus’ “I AM…” statements, which are found throughout the Gospel of John, and this one is like a spiritual atom bomb when Jesus drops it because, as we’ll see, many people who were following Him to this point stop doing so after His statement.
That sets an interesting tone for the fact that the crowd following Jesus around by this point is developing some energy about this Rabbi from Nazareth. I mean, the guy can work miracles, He’s wise, He’s powerful. This could be the King they were looking for to free them from the Romans and finally bring Israel back to its rightful place in the world. And He gives out free Filet O’Fishes, too! Global Hunger… eradicated! But that’s not actually what happens in this passage. Instead, Jesus dampens their hopes by cryptic messages about things that they don’t understand, and ultimately, instead of blowing up His Twitter Feed,
Chaos, opposition and feelings of separation from Jesus often cause great fear in our lives. Thankfully, Jesus has something to say about that.

Uh-oh. Evangelism. It’s one of those “dangerous” obligatory Christian words that will have you handing out pamphlets on the street or being required to engage in academic debates with well-educated atheists about Creation vs. Evolution. Right? What if “Evangelism” is simply the idea of Gospel (i.e. “Good News”) made into a verb that encompasses three very specific elements that our 1st century brothers and sisters would have understood very well in light of their Roman oppressors? What if it’s easier than we think and harder at the same time? And what if it’s for all of us, not just for a few people who “have the gift?” Nervous yet? Don’t be. There are few words more central to what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ than the word “Gospel.” Since the first century, Jesus and the early church and now those of us who have come after are continually talking about “The Gospel.” But have you noticed that often, when we do so, we can tell that we don’t always all mean the same thing?
