The Book of Psalms is far more than ancient poetry—it’s the prayerbook of the Church and a vital guide for encountering Jesus. In this episode, we interview Chad Bird, author and scholar who specializes in teaching the Old Testament to Christians. We ask a variety of questions related to his newest book "Untamed Prayers." We explore why the Psalms are essential for Christians today. We discuss how the New Testament interprets the Psalms, the connection between David and Jesus, and how to see Christ even in Psalms that aren’t quoted in the New Testament. We also talk about the beauty of reading the Psalms in Hebrew, the intentional structure of the book, and how the Church Fathers used the Psalms for formation and devotion. From wrestling with the language of enemies to learning how to pray through every season of life, this episode is a call to dive deeper into the Psalms and meet Jesus there.
Chad Bird is a Scholar in Residence at 1517. He has served as a pastor, professor, and guest lecturer in Old Testament and Hebrew. He holds master's degrees from Concordia Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College. He has contributed articles to Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, Modern Reformation, The Federalist, Lutheran Forum, and other journals and websites. He is also the author of several books, including The Christ Key & Limping with God.

Alex Kirk joined the faculty of Beeson Divinity School in 2024 to teach Old Testament and Hebrew after serving in global theological education for nearly a decade. He has previously taught in over a dozen countries, at schools like Ecole Superieure Baptiste de Théologie de l’Afrique de l’Ouest in Lomé, Togo, Institut Biblique de la Croix-des-Bouquets in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, and Baptistička teološka škola in Novi Sad, Serbia, as well as helping to launch William Tennent School of Theology in Colorado and serving with Crosslands Training in the UK. Both a philologist and a theologian by training, his academic interests range from biblical Hebrew linguistics and text criticism to poetry, wisdom literature, hermeneutics and theological interpretation of Scripture. His first book, Agur's Wisdom and the Coherence of Proverbs 30 (SBL, 2024), combines many of these interests to present a detailed interpretation of Proverbs chapter 30 as a coherent collection that mocks pride and commends humility as the better part of wisdom. Ongoing projects relate to the relationship of wisdom and law in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism, the role of humor in biblical wisdom and theological interpretation of Ecclesiastes.
As the son of a pastor and an enthusiast for literature of all types, Kirk is particularly passionate about leading church leaders deeper into the text of the Old Testament to encounter God. To this end, he continually strives to deepen his own understanding of the hermeneutical reality that this ancient text is the word of the LORD to his people. Alex is married to Meghan and they have three daughters, Rue, Willa and Janie. Their family attends Christ the King Anglican Church (ACNA) in Hoover, Alabama.

Rabbi Chaim Eisen is joining us from Israel! He has been teaching, editing, and publishing on the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, Midrash, Medieval Jewish Philosophy, and more for over 40 years. In this episode, we talk about the third section of the Hebrew Bible called the “Ketuvim” or the “Writings.” The order of the books of the Hebrew Bible are very different from the order that many experience in Bibles in Christian communities. The way that books are grouped can impact how we interpret the books themselves. Learning about very old traditions of the Hebrew order can yield interesting insights for those engaging with the Hebrew Bible. We give special attention to Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Chronicles, and even talk about the Holy Spirit in Rabbinic tradition.

Dr. Douglas K. Smith gives a presentation based on his PhD dissertation in which he does a blended discourse analysis of the flood account in both the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) and Greek Septuagint (LXX). His goal is to validate a holistic methodology that can 1) discern the structure, coherence, and communicative purpose of the discourse and 2) compare the versions to reveal and assess the translation strategies of the translator of Greek Genesis. The presentation is followed by questions from Matthew Delaney and Dr. Nathan French.
Dr. Smith is a Professor, Researcher, and Speaker with a PhD in Biblical Studies from Columbia International University.

He provides an overview of Ben Sira’s significance, discusses the unique introduction by Ben Sira’s grandson, and explains the importance of the Hebrew manuscripts. Dr. Beentjes also touches on intriguing aspects like the potential reference to Job as a prophet and reads some of his favorite sections of the book.
Dr. Beentjes is Professor Emeritus of Tilburg School of Catholic University in the Netherlands. He has written a number of books and approximately 200 academic articles, most focusing on the important book of Ben Sira. One of his most important books is “The Book of Ben Sira in Hebrew” which presented the precise layout of the Hebrew of the various manuscripts for the first time in book form.

One of the most popular verses about "vision" that is used in teaching about personal and group vision statements is Habakkuk 2:2, but what is the original context of this verse? Understanding what is meant by "vision" both generally and specifically in the book of Habakkuk is essential to not taking this verse out of context. Unfortunately, Habakkuk 2 also causes confusion due to an unhelpful chapter division. Once the flow of Habakkuk as a book is seen, the themes and message of the book come to the forefront. The ideas behind "vision" are different but more important than we might have ever thought.

How do we make sense of the Hebrew Prophets? The Latter Prophets of Isaiah-Malachi are some of the most enduring books of the Hebrew Bible. While this literature is full of meaning, these books can be some of the most difficult to understand. We interviewed a scholar on the prophets to learn more about how to approach this part of Scripture.
Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer is Professor of Old Testament Exegesis at ALT School of Theology, Sweden. She holds a PhD in Divinity/Hebrew Bible from Oxford, and completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Her specialty is the Prophetic Literature, though she is also working in the lament literature, the reception history of the Bible, Ezra-Nehemiah, and 1-2 Samuel. Professor Tiemeyer has authored six monographs and three textbooks. She has published numerous book chapters in edited volumes, as well as a plethora of journal articles across some of the most prestigious, peer-reviewed journals in Hebrew Bible studies, while also having presented countless times at some of the largest and most esteemed scholarly meetings around the world. She is currently Editor for the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and has been praised by her peers as “an accomplished scholar and editor with an international reputation for careful and nuanced scholarship.” She currently lives in Örebro, Sweden, with her husband and their two daughters.

Iosif Zhakevich is Associate Professor of Old Testament at The Master’s Seminary and an elder at Grace Community Church.
After receiving his B.A. from UCLA, and an M.Div. and Th.M. from TMS, Iosif completed an M.A. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he focused on Near Eastern languages and civilizations.
Dr. Zhakevich grew up in a Christian home, but he repented of his sin and committed to following Christ at age 17.
At TMS, Dr. Zhakevich teaches Hebrew Exegesis, Exegesis of Messianic Texts, and the Art of Bible Translation, among other classes. He was part of a translation committee that worked on the Legacy Standard Bible, he now serves as the managing editor of The Master's Seminary Journal, and he oversees the Tyndale Center for Bible Translation at The Master's Seminary.
At Grace Community Church, Dr. Zhakevich serves as an elder and co-leads a fellowship group with Dr. Abner Chou.

How do the Hebrew authors portray that way that God gets involved in the lives of individuals and communities? How does this look in the New Testament, and how can we grapple with this question today? The hermeneutical principle of retribution is one of the most important worldview concepts of Israel and its neighbors. Reward and punishment (blessing and cursing) based on merit is one of the foundational components of how they viewed the world. In this episode, we discuss this topic at length.
We talk about modern conceptions of retribution before diving into how the people of the ancient Near East interpreted events. We dive into a specific example from the Mesha Stele Inscription from Moab along with the corresponding story in the Book of Kings. We talk about New Testament stories and the challenge for the church today. We finish by going over a key passage in Jeremiah and conclude with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil as well as Proverbs.

Lenore Mullican grew up in Israel from the mid 40s to the mid 50s as a missionary kid. She was a nurse in Gaza during the 70s before moving to the US to teach modern and Biblical Hebrew for over 30 years. Matthew and Nathan both learned Hebrew from Lenore who they call "Morah" (the Hebrew word for teacher). I interview Nathan French (Ph.D. Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East) about his Ph.D. Dissertation on the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He shares the history of how the tree has been interpreted, walks us through his research strategy, and then shares his unique contribution to this area of research. He traces the phrase "knowledge of good and evil" throughout the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East to show how Genesis 2-3 is about more than just "God told Adam and Eve not to do something, they did it, and so they sinned." There is another dimension to this story that has a big impact on how we interpret, preach, and teach the foundational story of the Bible.

In this episode I read Genesis 12 in Hebrew and in English. Instead of just listening to your "chapter of the day" in English, you can listen to it in Hebrew and in English along with some thoughts that I have on the chapter. Whether you just enjoy hearing the sound of the Hebrew language, are learning Hebrew, or are excellent at Hebrew, this is an episode that you will enjoy. I give credit to Ellen Davis for pointing out something that has forever changed the way I read Abraham's story. Ruth is one of the more popular stories in the Hebrew Bible. It’s one of the few narratives where a woman is one of the main characters. Yet there is something about this story that modern readers almost always miss that keeps us from seeing how shocking and inspiring this story really is. Once we learn about some of the “bad guys” of the Hebrew, this story will leap off of the first page, changing the way we read the story and inspiring us in a whole new way.

Sin truly pervades all parts of society. How do we as Christians respond to everything that is going on and think about this perennial problem? Does the Bible have anything to say about this important subject? In this series, we will be looking at stories of racism, slavery, and minorities in the Bible. In today’s episode, we look at the first story of a foreigner in the Bible. I want to be clear from the beginning: we aren’t going to get all of the answers. There’s a lot that I don’t know. In today’s episode we continue our conversation from last episode. So if you haven’t listened to that, you’ll want to do that before listening to this one. In this conversation, we take a look at one of the most powerful rulers of the ancient world. Before Greece and Persia, Babylon was the powerhouse of the Middle East. It’s ruler in the 6th century BC was Nebuchadnezzar (the guy responsible for the famous Fiery Furnace story). What you might not know about him is that it looks like he also wrote a chapter of the Bible! (Daniel 4) Whether he wrote it or someone else, this is one of the few chapters in the Bible that is written from a first person perspective, and this one is fascinating. We see the perspective of one of the greatest rulers (who was also very self-absorbed, arrogant, and violent), and his encounter with God. The ending is not one that you would expect and gives great perspective on what it means to be human.

Here’s the question we are asking in today’s episode: Why is there a story about the first human looking for a partner among the animals? Is this an offensive sexist narrative? Is it a “dumb” primitive story? Or could this be about something so much more...a story about morality, ethics, and what it means to be human.
Our journey takes us through Babylon, the Holocaust, Ancient Greece, and back to our present day. An old Babylonian creation story, one of the most famous holocaust poems, and “this is Sparta!” will all help paint a picture of humanity’s natural tendency that we as societies still struggle with today: how do we actually treat people well?
This is exactly why this seemingly odd story of the first human looking for a partner among animals is in the Bible. Once I learned part of what this story is about, I’ve gone back to it time and time again for inspiration and guidance in my attempt to love others well.
