Better Than I Found It

Piggy-backing off the book with the same title, "Better Than I Found It" is a podcast uncovering stories and insights from Baylor Men's Golf Coach, Mike McGraw's life in golf coaching. Hosted by Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen.

Joining us today is Michael Schaloum, the Assistant Coach at Grand Canyon University. Michael played two years at GCU and returned as a coach. He gives us insights on the qualities he inspires his players to achieve and later on recites a story about his grandparents that helps give him perspective on the game. Joining us today is David Inglis, Northwestern University Men's golf coach. David, a Scottish-born golfer and former University of Tulsa All-America, won the 2000 British Boys Championship. David also contributed to the wins for Europe in the 2003 Palmer Cup and the 2003 Walker Cup. David later explains Northwestern's win over Illinois during the Big 10 Championship. Each event will have 13-14 teams, with Baylor playing at Chapel Hill in North Carolina, May 24-29th. At the 6th seed, our lineup is: Johnny Keefer, Davis Ovard, Tyler Isenhart, Zach Heffernan, and Luke Dossey with Jonas Appel as our substitute. In college, he earned All American 3 times and was runner-up to Phil Michelson in the 1989 NCAA Championship. Tom Shaw is the Head Men's Golf Coach at Abilene Christian University (ACU). He's served as Head Coach at both Tulane and Vanderbilt previously. In today's podcast, Coach Shaw talks about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina while at Tulane (located in New Orleans), what he learned from being let go at Vanderbilt, and how he's leveraged his strengths and what he has learned at ACU. Coach Shaw has led the Wildcats to a Conference Championship in just three years after transitioning the program to Division 1 golf. He has also been instrumental is ACU's major facility upgrades. Doug Gordin is a long-time golf coach at both the Division I and Division II levels. He retired in 2018 after a long stint at Florida Southern where his teams captured six NCAA Division II National Championships. In today's episode he talks about his coaching influences, which includes his dad, Rod Myers, Conrad Rehling, and Buddy Alexander. Coach Gordin was inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame in 2001. Buddy Alexander is a Hall of Fame Golf Coach with his longest stint at the University of Florida where he won two National Championships. He currently serves as the Volunteer Assistant at Auburn University. In addition to his extensive coaching background, he is a great player as well. He was the 1986 U.S. Amateur Championship and played in the Walker Cup. Further, his father and his son have both played the PGA Tour. Charles Coody is a Texas Golf "Hall-of-Famer" and the 1971 Masters Champion. He has a long and interesting history in the game of golf which he sheds a light on in today's podcast. Casey Martin is the Head Men's Golf Coach at the University of Oregon. He is highly accomplished both as a player and a coach. His teams are notoriously tough and well coached. They reached the pinnacle of college golf when they won the National Championship on home turf in 2016. As a player, he was an all-american at Stanford and played on the 1994 NCAA Champion Team. His teammates included Tiger Woods and Notah Begay. Coach Martin talks about all these things in today's podcast. He also talks about his long-term battle with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, a condition that has forced the amputation of his right leg. A great podcast - thank you so much for coming on Coach Martin!

Devon Brouse is a college golf legend who recently announced his retirement from his position as Women's Golf Head Coach at Purdue University. Coach Brouse is the only coach to be inducted into both the WGCA and GCAA Hall of Fames. He spent his last 25 years of coaching at Purdue - following a 21-year stint at North Carolina. Him and his siblings had to earn the money to pay their own way through their tournament schedules. He shares what the lessons taught him and the positive impact it made on his golf. Sam Houston State Head Golf Coach, Brandt Kieschnick, joins the podcast. Coach Kieschnick's Men's Team had one of the best stories of the year in college golf. After winning the Southland Conference Championship, the Bearkats advanced to the National Championship through the Stillwater Regional despite their best player (Will Holcomb) having to sit out the final round due to Covid-19 contact tracing. They ended up finishing 9th at the National Championship at Greyhawk. Coach Kieschnick shares with us the dynamics of this year's team as well as how the Sam Houston State team has evolved since he returned to his alma mater as the Men's Coach in 2012.
