The Foundation’s first charity event is Lachie’s Walk, a community walk in Bayside on Sunday 11 August 2024. This six-kilometre walk along the foreshore will be followed by a community barbecue and raffles at Mentone Grammar.

A special investigation by Southern FM newsman Colin Tyrus has revealed the true cost of an arts centre project being funded by Bayside ratepayers is $1.6 million dollars higher than claimed by Council. In this podcast, Bayside Mayor Cr Fiona Stitfold agrees that the revamp of the Beaumaris Art Group studios will cost $6.2 million, as revealed by Southern FM, not the previously announced amount of $4.6 million. Southern FM can also reveal that the $10-million-dollar-plus Brighton Recreational Centre is still sitting empty despite being officially opened last November. The Council budget has another half-a-million dollars earmarked for childcare at the Rec Centre, but the Mayor says there is still no firm date for community groups to access the facility.Related Posts:

We were dancing in the studio to the tunes of Celtic band members Bernadette and Anthony O’Neill on Sunday 5 March 2023. Their band, Saoirse, is a vibrant musical group that brings their ballads and traditional songs to festivals and venues around Australia and overseas. Among other upcoming performances, they’re off to Hepburn Springs for a St Patrick’s Day gig and then performing at Hampton Bowling Club on 2 April. Plenty of people drive from Queensland to Tassie – so what’s impressive about a couple of guys doing it next month?
Well – because they’re doing it in a 40-year-old car that is worth less than $1500 – and plan to do it in just a few days, including the trip across Bass Strait.
Highett couple Paul Hughes and Kerry Evitts joined Alli Harding on Southern FM’s South of the River on Sunday 19 February 2023 to talk about the bold plan to drive from Rockhampton to Hobart to raise money for Cancer Council Australia. Have a listen:
Paul, and his co-driver and colleague Paul Mineo, are taking part in the Summer Shitbox Rally 2023. The rally is the largest community-led fundraiser for the organisation and is now in its 13th year.
The pair were donated a 1982 silver Mercedes for the trip (all cars that take part must be valued under $1500) and plan to first drive to Rockhampton before making the return trip in the rally.
Artist Kerry is joining the effort, donating two weeks of her time to paint the Mercedes in a special design that will depict the journey, including animals and outback scenes. Kerry usually devotes her talent to painting murals and holding workshops and art therapy sessions in her Advantage Road studio but is happy to help the two Pauls on their journey.
“I’ve never painted a car before, so this is going to be a challenge but a lot of fun,” she says.
“There is no guarantee we’re going to even make it to Hobart, but fingers crossed we will – but I’m sure there will be some emotional, and mechanical moments, along the road,” adds Paul.
The car, which has been dubbed ‘Pauline’, will be auctioned in Hobart, along, of course, with Kerry’s original artwork.
