Qorsho Hassan is a bilingual educator, researcher, and community organizer. She is the 2020 Minnesota Teacher of the Year and teaches fourth grade at ISD 196 (Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan).
Qorsho is the artist and co-author behind the exhibit and book “Urur Dhex-Dhexaad Ah: Community In-Between,” which presents color portraits, first-person video stories, and written narratives of Somali Americans from Columbus, Ohio.
She is a strong advocate for educational equity and amplifying student voice and agency. Qorsho serves on the board of 826 MSP, a creative writing and tutoring nonprofit in South Minneapolis that empowers students of color.

Dr. Abdi Jama is a board certified and fellowship trained Cardiologist and Vascular Medicine Specialist. In the Mpls-St.Paul Magazine he was rated "Top Doctor - Rising Star" (2019).
Dr. Jama completed his Residency (internal medicine) at Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN. He went on to complete a Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology fellowship at Mayo Clinic. Upon completion, he moved to Boston, MA and completed Vascular Medicine and Interventional fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ramla Bile currently works at a private foundation in St. Paul – bringing over ten years of experience as a strategist, social entrepreneur, and storyteller.
As a community organizer, Ramla works to bring awareness to issues at the intersection of racism, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiment. A local leader in the Somali-Minnesotan community, she provided critical thought-leadership and advocacy against the Countering Violent Extremism program, and continues to challenge the surveillance apparatus and the ways that systems institutionalize the criminalization of BIPOC communities. A published author, she supports communities impacted by state violence by promoting greater understanding, resilience, and liberation through her writing. She co-founded and writes for Ubuntu: the Collective, a platform that spotlights emergent issues impacting the global black diaspora.
Ramla holds a bachelor's degree in Global Studies and Political Science with a minor in Journalism and Mass Communications from the U of M. She lives in Minneapolis with her young daughter.

Yussuf Shafie MSW, LGSW a graduate of the University of MN. Yussuf is an active and well-respected member of the addiction community. He is a licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor ( LADC) with the Board of Behavioral Health. He completed his internship with the Community University Health Care Center as a Social Work Triage Specialist, and he continued on as a Mental Health Practitioner with CUHCC.
In 2015, Yussuf opened Alliance Wellness Center in Bloomington, MN, a DHS licensed Substance Abuse Outpatient and Inpatient Treatment Program. He is Board member of the Minnesota Trauma Project and Minnesota Recovery Connection. Yussuf’s passion is to bring wellness to those affected by addiction and mental health problems.

Fadumo Yusuf better known by her nickname, Derbi, was born in East Africa to Somali parents. She immigrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota with her family when she was a teenager.
Fadumo obtained Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of St. Thomas and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Minnesota. Fadumo works in the medical device industry where she works on developing new medical technologies.
In her blog Fadumo shares her writing. She enjoys writing uplifting stories, personal reflections, Somali poems, and exploring her cultural identities. Fadumo is the author of Ayan, of the Lucky. She is also one of the authors featured in Green Card Voices book, STEM Voice – Stories from Minnesota Immigrants Working in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Mohamud Mohamed is a Minneapolis born and bred Somali American. He is a graduate of Augsburg University with degrees in Clinical Psychology and History and is an incoming graduate student at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar in Applied Islamic Ethics. Currently, he is the Dean of Students and Academics at Ubah Medical Academy in addition to serving as the Chaplain to the Muslim community at the University of Minnesota, where he is currently an MA candidate in Heritage Studies and Public History.
He holds a certificate in Islamic Studies with from Abubakar As-Siddique’s Institute for Islamic Studies, and completed a resident research fellowship at Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania in Rabat, Morocco with a dual enrollment at The University of Al-Qarawiyyin in the Faculty of Hadith.
As a contributor for the Huffington Post and other publications he has written on the intersection Islam and Blackness, and in his downtime he is a translator of classical Islamic texts and manuscripts. His current research is primarily focused on Hadith transmission and Islamic pedagogy In East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
He serves as Chaplain to the University of Minnesota Muslim Student Association.

Faduma is a parent of a child with special needs, a community advocate, and founding member of the Somali Parent Education Board (SPEB).
She supports families of children with special needs in the East African community to increase opportunities for the families to collaborate, share information and broaden understanding of the resources and services available to them.
She believes that early intervention can improve a child's overall development. Children who receive autism and developmental delay appropriate education and support at key developmental stages are more likely to gain essential social skills and react better in society.

Roun Said, M.S.Ed, LPCC, is a licensed therapist and speaker with several years of experience working with individuals, families, and groups. She has received training in different modalities of therapy and uses them eclectically to best fit each client’s needs.

Dr. Ifrah is a post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Latrobe University Autism Research Center. She has a PhD in Medicine from the University of Western Australia. Dr. Ifrah’s PhD investigated the health and developmental outcomes of children of immigrant and minority backgrounds.
With her interest in inter-disciplinary research, she has successfully coupled clinical medicine, pediatrics research, and public health and psychology in contributing new knowledge to the newly emerging field of migrant and refugee developmental health.

Since joining OSU in 2010, Ismail has been charged with serving as the primary contact for urgent cases, and assume responsibility and oversight for difficult student care, crisis or conduct-related situations. As part of his responsibilities, Ismail manages student cases that could lead to—or have already resulted in—academic and/or immigration consequences, some of which could be severe.

He was a recipient of the prestigious leadership fellowship from the St. Paul-based Bush Foundation, a "Great Immigrant" award from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Twin Cities Business Magazine’s 100 People to Know (2019), Islamic Resource Group's "Building Bridges Award in Media" (2019), and "Above the Fold" award, which honors alumni of the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication under the age of 40 who have made exceptional contributions to their fields.

On the 5th episode of #NomadicHustle - I sit with Dr. Qaali Hussein to discuss her experience in becoming a board certified surgeon while raising her six children, advice for professional Muslim women, advocating for yourself in the workplace, and balancing a successful career with a busy family life.
Dr. Qaali Hussein is a double board certified trauma/acute care surgeon and surgical intensivist who practices in Florida. She graduated from the University of Texas with honors in human biology. In addition to her busy professional schedule, Dr. Hussein is the mother of six children, all of whom she had during her intense training years in general surgery and critical care.
She went to medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Hussein then went on to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where she completed her residency in General Surgery as well as a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care. After completion of her training, she relocated to Florida in 2015 to practice at a level 2 trauma center. She also provides trauma/acute care surgery/critical care coverage for understaffed hospitals throughout the country.
Dr. Hussein is also the co-founder of Advanced Surgical Skills for Advanced Providers, a Trauma and Acute Care Surgery training course for physician assistants and nurse practitioners. She is also a an entrepreneur and a professional keynote speaker on leadership, culture change, overcoming adversity, women’s empowerment, and time-management.

Abdiwali Mohamed is the son of Somali refugees, the first of his family to attend a university. He is a father, a husband, a CPA, a Real Estate Agent, a small business owner and Nonprofit founder. He graduated from Western Washington University with an Accounting Degree, got a Masters in Accounting-Taxation from GGU and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Washington.
He is also the founder and principal owner of Abdiwali Mohamed, CPA, PLLC. He has built a successful financial practice by helping small business owners achieve their financial goals since 2004.
Abdiwali’s passion for community advocacy started at high school and continued in university where he was an active member of many different organizations. He is currently one of the founders of Elmi Foundation, a non for profit organization that focuses on providing financial literacy education and mentorship to Somali students and young professionals.

Ahmed Ali is an innovator, an entrepreneur, systems thinker and change-maker with passion and experience in the areas of health equity, social impact, and community resilience.
Dr. Ali is an active member within the Somali community, with emphasis on immigrant and refugee health and also serves as one of the founders and the current Executive Director of the Somali Health Board. Ahmed was born in Somalia, moved to the US in 1998 and currently lives in Kent with his wife and children. He also sits at various advocacy, policy and systems change tables, including the Accountable Communities of Health (HealthierHere) and the City of Seattle’s Sweetened Beverages Tax Advisory Board and believes healthcare is a universal right for all.
