On Sunday Evening October 30th 2023 churches from the Memphis, Tennessee area of the Mississippi Valley Presbytery of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church came together to celebrate the grace of God and the Reformation through Bible preaching and worship.--Churches and Ministers represented included -in order of speaker---Rev. The teaching here was presented at the funeral service of Mrs. Lettye Platt at 95 years of Christian service. In our theological tradition a service at the end of a person's life is a real church service and secular replacements for Christian worship would not be considered appropriate. So listen in and see what the Lord has done and will do in the Christian life. This dear saint has gone on to her reward and yet none of us will be very far behind her...

The Westminster Larger Catechism, the Law and the Gospel as delineated in the Westminster Larger Catechism
5 Let your manner of living be without covetousness, and be content with such things as ye have. For He hath said, -I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee-----Covetousness- is a problem of the heart and mind. It's one of the sins that has to do with how you see God, yourself and other people. Jealousy, vanity, self concern are out of place making the Christian easy pickings for the world, the devil and the flesh.--6 so that we may boldly say, -The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.---7 Remember those who have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God. Follow their faith, considering the outcome of their manner of living.--8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.
-Holiness, Loneliness and the Sufficiency of Christ in all things---Hebrews 12-Christ has overcome the world and we can't even overcome ourselves. But he is faithful even when we are not. His Grace is sufficient.
The 5 Traits of a Christian Marriage----We try to lay out the five primary traits of a Christian marriage. All true and real marriages are honorable to God. One doesn't have to be a christian to marry. It is one of his ordinations of nature, that one man and one woman come together to form a new family. But there are rules here- some of wisdom and some of law.----1. A Promise, a Vow, a Covenant to keep.----2. A Friendship- from before the fall that one should not be alone but have a soul to walk through life with is a primary trait of the human experience.----3. A Relationship- an intimate and physical relation unique in all creation.----4. An Adventure- A Christian life occurs within a God designed framework with predictable phases and peaks and valleys.----5. A Center- The most important trait of a Christian marriage is that its center be in Christ and him crucified because life and hope rest in him alone.
-3 ways to feel closer to God that really work-. People often want to feel closer to God. There are many -methods-. Tried and true ways to come close to God or to cause God to come closer to us. But that way of thinking can be misrepresentative. God isn't easily open to what might seem like merely human manipulations. But there are ways that the Bible teaches the people of God have drawn near. Faith, repentance and moral obedience to the laws of God - have generally been the means of pleasing God and a sure knowledge that those that come to him in this way are loved by him. If we don't feel close to God we might want to consider our ways and if in error... make amendment. Simply, if you want to be close to God live a life he would want you to live. There are promises and blessings there.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the-Lord.----Timothy 5-8-But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.--The Godly man is faithful in his work-The Godly man is faithful to his country-The Godly man is keeping his eyes on Heaven
A description and explanation of Psalm singing and why we do it. God wrote 150 songs and preserved them in the Bible. Psalmnody is a wonderful and meaningful part of authentically Christian worship. Psalm singing seems to be a requirement for Biblical worship. Psalm singing cannot be adequately replaced by contemporary worship songs nor by Exclusive Hymnody. God as he really is can easily be misrepresented by avoiding singing the Bible itself. Jehovah has jurisdiction over how he speaks and how he will be worshipped. Human compositions, prayers, sermons and songs are permissible but will always be merely human and so fallible, even if good and edifying. Psalmnody is part of our historic theological tradition. It is he exclusion of the Psalms from Christian worship that seems unreasonable. Why would we exclude the songs in the Bible from our worship of the God of the Bible--
The pre-millennial, a-millennial and post-millennial options for understanding Revelation 20 are daunting to every Christian thinker but there are answers.
Jesus tells us both not to judge people and to judge people. The Apostle Paul does the same thing. Obviously following the judging rules can get a little complicated. On the one hand if we judge our neighbor we will be judged by the same measure. If we want to judge others we will be judged ourselves. But on the last day we shall all be called upon to judge with God - both men and the angels. In any case, a bitter and judgmental spirit isn't going to do anybody any good. Cold and callous people seldom please the Lord. But being able to tell the difference between good and evil- We all need to be able to do that. Blindness is not the same as innocence.

The problem with Apostles, Elders and Deacons. Should I even go to church- Why- On the form of the Church from the Bible. Should there be Elders and Deacons- What do they do- What are the qualifications-
Thinking about the Bible and the church in regard to wether or not there should be formal church membership.
Every Christians bears a moral duty in regard to the church they attend. Every church is some kind of church. Every church is either right or wrong about what they think the Bible says. We should always go to the -rightest-, best church we can find. That carries a lot of responsibility including to know what our church believes, where they came from and how they define themselves. There is no perfect church on earth. The creation of the church was a perfect ordination by God but a perfect ordination of a fallible institution administrated by fallible human instruments. A perfect Gospel and an infallible word applied by a broken and needy people. This carries with it a question- how will we know the word of the Lord- Do we need infallible Prophets producing words from the Lord- Do we need an infallible church to interpret the infallible Bible- Or is the Bible alone the sole infallible rule of faith and practice- Is the word of the Lord already spoken and confirmed by the resurrection of the Son of God everything necessary for a life honoring to God- What about covenant theology and the covenant sign of Baptism- How is that to be applied and to whom- What are we supposed to do with our children that have been declared -Holy...- by God-
Matthew 5-27 -You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.--31 -It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Why are you so angry- What gives you the right- Is there righteous anger- Plainly, most anger is just pride and vanity writ large but Jesus in the Sermon on the Mountain confronts our merely natural propensity to justify our angry souls.--The Law According To Jesus- Pt. 2 -How To Get Away With Murder-

A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that-b- they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Luther called -justification- the doctrine upon which the church stands or falls. Even today the Gospel stands imperishable as a salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone -as known through the teaching of scripture alone- and to the glory of God alone. Let's never let it be compromised or obscured through mere tradition, human reason, fine sounding philosophy or that called knowledge which is not knowledge at all. Everything we need for our faith and life is found within the pages of the holy scriptures, the Bible, that our hope might rest in the true and living God.
