Cycling Time Trial Podcast: Recent Episodes

Mark Florence

A cycling podcast loosely focused on Cycling Time Trials. I feature expert interviews in training, aerodynamics and coaching. Also featured are conversations with bike industry experts and some very fast cyclists. Please contact me at ttpodcast@yahoo.com with guest and show ideas. I also just have some fun and do interviews with cycling related topics of general interest from time to time. It can't all be about going faster right? OK, forget I said that.....

How to be a faster cyclist: Focus on problems over products. In 1994, Graeme Obree successfully broke the world hour record on a homemade bicycle he’d put together with leftover scrap and some old bearings from a washing machine.

Despite race officials attempting to block him intermittently as he rode around the track and the governing body trying to legislate him back into obscurity, this was a man who had the foresight to focus on the problem associated with going as fast as possible on a bike and the instincts to know how best to find a solution, no matter how radical.

When it comes to getting faster, there’s always a raft of cool equipment to buy or upgrade to. Sadly, if you were hoping I was going to recommend buying wheel X or handlebar Y in this podcast, you’re going to be disappointed.

Many thanks for the downloads and support. I can be reached at cyclingtimetrialpodcast@gmail.com and @markflorence11

Today on the Cycling Time trial podcast we welcome back Heath Dotson. Heath lives in Asheville, NC and previously joined us when we were discussing saddles. I am really glad to have Heath back to talk about much more fun topics.

Heath raced full time as a Category 1 cyclist for nearly 12 years, he raced several seasons for different elite teams including spending a year racing for a team in Europe. He also helped found the Cane Creek/Subaru Elite team based out of Asheville, NC. During his tenure as rider, director and manager, the team became one of the top elite teams in the Southeast US and successfully campaigned internationally as well. Heath was also a Masters National Pursuit Champion and a World Team Pursuit Silver medalist.

Heath was forced out of top level cycling due to an injury and he then turned his competitive nature to triathlon although he does still compete at regional cycling events. Heath is now a professional coach after founding HD (High Definition) Coaching and you can find out more at HDCoaching.net.

Heath also founded AeroCamp, which incorporates everything every obsessed time trialist thinks about on a continual basis to include testing (and more testing) equipment and fit. Welcome back Heath Dotson!

Today on the Cycling Time Trial Podcast, from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire UK we welcome back Michael Broadwith. On June 16th, Michael broke the Land’s End to John ‘O Groat’s cycling record in a time of 43 hours 25 minutes and 13 seconds. This bettered the “unbeatable” record by around 39 minutes. While that sounds pretty comfortable, the numbers really don’t tell the story. Welcome back Michael Broadwith! It was a pleasure to have Helen Simpson joining us as well.

I like to take ideas from listeners and one suggestion that been requested and in fact re-requested is to chat about the relationship between triathlon and time trialists. I remember reading through Velonews Magazine a few years ago and reading an article about chain lubrication. It seems I was likely giving up quite a few free watts just based on my “favorite” lube, which was probably chosen for me by a bike shop employee who happened to be standing next to a display when I asked the question. Can my choice of lube really save all that power? In the years that have passed since then, we know if course it can, and the “friction” industry has grown dramatically.
