In the finale installment of this series (and podcast), we once again hear from my dad John Doble. He talks about being removed from yet another foster home but this time he gets put in juvenile hall and an orphanage. Oh, and he races in a soap box derby and drives a car.
In the third part of this four part series John (my dad) talks about being separated from his family and put into foster care in Los Angeles at the end of World War II. He also talks about a bike.
Sorry for the delay, but here is the second in a four part series about my dad John Doble. JHD was a master story teller (or at least I thought so) and using recordings that I and my stepmother did, I am attempting to put a picture together of who he was and how he got that way. In this episode he talks more about his time in Aransas as well as how he and his five siblings became wards of the state.
I interviewed my dad, John Doble over the course of several months back in 2008. I wanted to record the stories that he told us (his kids) about his life so that if he was not around to tell my kids or his other grandkids that they would have the opportunity to hear them from him. He died in April of 2020 so these stories will have to suffice. This podcast is about how people got the way they did and I realized that these recordings was my first effort to actually tell someone's story. These John Doble podcasts are dedicated to his grandchildren. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Tucker Shelton is passionate about yoga. He has spent thousands of hours practicing and teaching yoga to hundreds if not thousands of people. Tucker loves yoga, but just as importantly he also has introduced Asheville, North Carolina to a revolutionary style of yoga called Kaiut. In this episode, Tucker talks about growing up gay in Western North Carolina and how yoga helped to transform his life. He takes us on his journey to becoming a yogi and finding Kaiut. Sam Negus is a professor of history, a husband and a father, a reader of Cicero...but most importantly he is a lunatic follower of the Derby County Rams. Paula Penn- Nasbrit is the author of Morning By Morning: How We Home-Schooled Our African-American Sons to the Ivy League. This is just one of her five published books. She also runs the management consulting firm PN&A, Inc. which helps companies design and develop effective training that transforms these organizations.

To me, this sums up my experience in talking with Paula. She is an amazing writer, business leader, woman, wife, and mother. Paula was so insightful and forceful in her thoughts and words that she spun my world on its axis. I hope she does the same for you.
This is a midweek show and is unique (at this point) to HIGTW. I am not more "woke" than you most likely but this show examines what it really means to be "woke" in my opinion. I sincerely hope that no one is insulted when they listen, but that is the risk we take.
This week I speak with Peter Brantley. Peter is a triathlete, coffee connoisseur, and former teammate of mine at the University of Oregon. Peter talks about having a dad who really loved Corvettes and played to the beat of his own drum. He also talks about how hard it was for him to find where he fit in on the football team and how it took 30 years to come to peace around his experiences at Oregon. This is one of the most honest and raw conversations I have had with someone on the podcast and I feel lucky to have had the chance to hear Peter's story.
Mike Lowe is a young father with two small children. He was born and raised in Beaverton, OR and was a sports star at Jesuit HS (one of the powerhouse schools in the Portland Metro area). Mike also happens to be biracial with a fascinating family story and circuitous route to where he is today. Mike helps to add to the tapestry being formed in the Black in America series. I am grateful for his attitude and optimism.
Dr. Fred Pitts is the first guest I have had on twice. Fred is a doctor and and actor. A husband and a good all around guy. He also happens to be black. As part of this ongoing series on being black in America I wanted to talk to Fred about his experiences. The interview was challenging for me but also encouraging and enlightening. Born into poverty and challenges most of us can't even fathom, he worked hard to make his life story a success. When you read his Wikipedia page you see all the professional accomplishments that Jason has achieved but this episode talks about how he got there. His story is absolutely fascinating.

Before launching the Mission Chattanooga, Chris served as the Senior Associate Pastor of Stanwich Church in Greenwich, Connecticut for seven years. While in seminary (M.Div – Alliance Theological Seminary, Nyack, New York), Chris served as the Young Life Area Director in Darien, Connecticut. Oh ya, Chris is also a bitchin singer and songwriter.
