The theme of our Sunday sermon series this term is 'A Closer Walk with God' : traditional and contemporary reflections on Christian spirituality. Our preachers will explore this theme each Sunday during the Lent term.
Preacher: The Rev’d Prebendary Alan Moses, Vicar, All Saints Margaret Street, London
Prebendary Alan Moses is the Vicar of All Saints, Margaret Street in London.
He was born and brought up in Teesdale in the North East of England. He is married to Theresa, and they have two grown-up children and a grand-daughter.
He studied history at Hull, then divinity at Edinburgh, while training for the priesthood at the Episcopal Theological College, and has an MA in Theology from King's, London.
After a curacy at Old St. Paul's, Edinburgh, he was a parish priest in Fife for six, then returned to Edinburgh as Rector of Old St. Paul's. Ministry there encompassed High Mass with bells and smells and Mozart and a centre for the homeless and much else in between. After 10 years he was appointed Vicar of All Saints, which has a significant ministry of hearing confessions and spiritual guidance.
Preacher: The Rt Rev’d Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, Bishop of Grantham
The Rt Revd Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, Bishop of Grantham, was born in Middlesex, grew up in Chester and studied in Durham and Edinburgh.
Prior to becoming a bishop in the Diocese of Lincoln, Bishop Nicholas served as a parish priest in Jesmond, in the north-east of England, and during his ministry he has also held positions of responsibility for clergy recruitment and in-service training.
Bishop Nicholas was ordained and consecrated as Bishop of Grantham in Southwark Cathedral on the 19th of November 2015.
In his spare time, Bishop Nicholas enjoys running, cycling, reading and spending time with friends and family.
Preacher: The Rev’d Clare Herbert, Tutor in Practical Theology and Mission, St Augustine’s College of Theology
Clare joined the staff at St Augustine's in September 2013, and is the Tutor for Practical Theology and Mission.She has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Theology from Edinburgh University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Hermeneutical Practical Theology with Anglia Ruskin University and the Cambridge Theology Federation.
A former childcare social worker, Clare was pastoral care advisor in the Diocese of London before becoming the Rector of St Anne’s Soho.
In her spare time Clare swims and sails a dinghy in Chichester Harbour.
Preacher: The Rev’d Philip Moller SJ, Assistant Chaplain, Fisher House and Doctoral Student, St John’s College
Philip Moller SJ took BA and LLB (Hons) degrees at the University of Adelaide, Australia, before practising as a solicitor in the corporate insolvency litigation field. He subsequently completed M Div, MTS, and MA (Theol) degrees at the University of Divinity in Melbourne. Before coming to Cambridge, he completed a two year Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) at Boston College in Massachusetts. He is a member of the Australian Province of the Society of Jesus, and an Assistant Chaplain at Fisher House, the Catholic chaplaincy of the university. He is also a member of St John's College, and is presently in the second year of a PhD under the supervision of Norris-Hulse Professor Sarah Coakley, in the Divinity Faculty.
Preacher: Professor Tina Beattie, Director of Catherine of Siena College, and Professor of Catholic Studies, University of Roehampton
Tina Beattie is Professor of Catholic Studies and Director of Catherine of Siena College and the Digby Stuart Research Centre for Religion, Society and Human Flourishing at the University of Roehampton in London. She has researched and written on a wide range of issues to do with sacramental theology, theology and art, and theology, sexuality and gender. In addition to her academic work, Tina is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio 4 as well as to a number of other television and radio networks. She writes for the weekly Catholic journal The Tablet and The Guardian online. She works widely with parish groups, chaplaincies and religious and lay communities, and she has been involved in interfaith dialogue for many years.
Preacher: The Rev’d Canon Dr Jessica Martin, Residentiary Canon, Ely Cathedral
Jessica Martin has been Residentiary Canon for Education and Outreach at Ely Cathedral since September 2016. Before that she was priest-in-charge of five parishes in South Cambridgeshire for six years, following an academic career as Fellow in English at Trinity College, Cambridge. She specialises in seventeenth century religious writing and early biography and has written about Izaak Walton and about devotional practices in early modern England. She is joint editor, with Prof Sarah Coakley of a book on parish ministry and its challenges being published this month, For God’s Sake: Re-Imagining Prayer and Priesthood in a Changing Church.
