In this episode, the hosts discuss messaging and what Democrats must do to win big in the upcoming elections. They are joined by Billy Ray, an Emmy award-winning writer and political advisor. The conversation covers various topics, including the messaging and tone of President Biden's State of the Union speech, the impact of cultural issues on Democratic messaging, and the importance of establishing a new frame for Democratic messaging. They also discuss crafting messages for undecided independent voters, enhancing the production and storytelling of presidential speeches, and reframing Democratic messaging on key issues like guns, climate change, and abortion. The episode concludes with a discussion on messaging to young people on Israel and Gaza and the importance of establishing a frame in messaging. In this episode, Simon Sidi interviews Billy Ray, a successful screenwriter and political messaging consultant. Billy shares his experience training Democratic candidates in effective messaging and storytelling. He emphasizes the importance of emotional connection and locating the audience's emotional state. Billy also discusses the messaging advantage of Republicans and the need for Democrats to focus on long-term planning. He provides examples of reframing political issues and appealing to values like freedom. The episode concludes with a celebration of Simon's graduation from college.

Takeaways:
President Biden's messaging focuses on making people feel that they matter and that they matter to him specifically.
Democrats should focus on the core issues that have broad support among the American people, such as minimum wage, abortion rights, gun control, and protecting social security and Medicare.
Democrats need to rebrand themselves as the antidote to chaos and emphasize their ability to govern and solve problems.
Breaking the frame in messaging involves rejecting the premise of a question and reframing the conversation to focus on the issues that matter to voters. Effective political messaging requires emotional connection and storytelling.
Democrats should focus on long-term planning and messaging to counter the Republicans' advantage.
Reframing political issues and appealing to values like freedom can be persuasive.
Young people interested in writing, politics, and communication should follow their passion and be willing to work hard.

The conversation with Noah Shachtman covers the misuse of prescription medications in the White House, particularly during the Trump administration. The White House Medical Office was found to have sloppy handling of prescription medications, including the use of military-grade stimulants like modafinil to keep up with the pace of dealing with Donald Trump. The White House doctor, Ronnie Jackson, was known for his eccentric behavior and abuse of power. The conversation also touches on the difference between being a writer and an editor in journalism, the future of magazines in the digital age, and the media's coverage of Biden and Trump.

Manhattan’s District Attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr. is looming large in former President Donald Trump's life as he is leading one of the most high-profile criminal investigations into Trump financial dealings. In addition to his investigation of Trump, Cy has also worked to transform the Manhattan District Attorney's office to include cybercrime, sex trafficking, and terrorism while also leading numerous other high-profile courtroom victories, including People v. Weinstein. Prior to being elected District Attorney in 2010, Cy worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the office he now leads, served as special assistant to the New York Attorney General, co-founded the McNaul Ebel Nawrot Helgren & Vance law firm in Seattle, and joined Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello as a partner when he returned to NY. We join him on this episode to talk about his upbringing, some of his proudest moments as District Attorney, his investigation into former President Trump, the Harvey Weinstein case, and what's in store for him after he retires at the end of the year.

Yes we know the audio quality is not as good as we would want on Mr Vance Jr’s end, but we hope you still enjoy the show.

Marc is the Chair of Perkins Coie’s Political Law Group and founder of Democracy Docket, an organization that focuses on detecting, highlighting, and combating suppressive voting laws. He and his organization led the court battles against the GOP's suppressive tactics during the 2020 election and in combating Republican efforts to overturn the results of that election on unsubstantiated claims of widespread election fraud with a near 100% win record. His work continues post-election as he fights against the draconian proposed laws recently passed in Iowa and GA and pending in 41 other states. We look forward to talking to Marc about these proposed voting restrictions today. In addition to his current work, Marc previously served as general counsel for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, won four election cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, and has represented dozens of political candidates in election matters. Politico Magazine named Marc as one of the “50 Politicos to Watch.”

Before being appointed FBI Director in 2013 by President Obama, James served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and as Deputy Attorney General, both under the Bush Administration. As FBI Director, he oversaw the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails and later the ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. In May of 2017, he was fired by then-President Trump, a fact he learned about from television reports while he was speaking to agents in the Los Angeles field office. Since then, Comey has written two books: “A Higher Loyalty, Truth, Lies, and Leadership,” and “Saving Justice: Truth, Transparency, and Trust.”

Bill Kristol has been a leading participant in American political debates and is a widely respected analyst of American political developments for three decades. After serving in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, Kristol founded The Weekly Standard in 1995 and edited this influential intellectual journal of conservatism for over two decades. In this episode, Jill and Victor talked with Lee Gelernt from the ACLU about the important work that he is doing as the deputy director of ACLU’s Immigrants’ Right Project and a documentary called “The Fight,” which highlights Lee’s first-hand experience fighting one of the most gut-wrenching and cruel policies of the Trump administration: separating children from their parents at the border in 2018.

Lee Gelernt is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading public interest lawyers and has argued dozens of groundbreaking civil rights cases during his career, including in the U.S. Supreme Court and virtually every federal court of appeals in the country. He has also testified before both houses of Congress. During the past four years, he has successfully argued some of the country’s most high-profile cases, including a challenge to the Trump Administration’s unprecedented practice of separating families at the border; the Administration’s first and second asylum bans; and the Administration’s first Travel Ban. Lee has won numerous awards for his work, regularly lectures around the country, and frequently appears in national and international media. In addition to his work at the ACLU, he is an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School, and for several years was a visiting professor at Yale Law School.

In this episode, we joined Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub of the Federal Election Commission to discuss everything you need to know about voting in the 2020 election. We talk about everything from making sure that your mail-in ballot isn't rejected to advice for first-time voters.

Commissioner Weintraub has served as a commissioner on the U.S. Federal Election Commission since 2002 and chaired it for the third time in 2019. During her tenure, Weintraub has served as a consistent voice for meaningful campaign-finance law enforcement and robust disclosure. She believes that strong and fair regulation of money in politics is important to prevent corruption and maintain the faith of the American people in their democracy. Weintraub sounded the alarm early–and continues to do so–regarding the potential for corporate and “dark-money” spending to become a vehicle for foreign influence in our elections. Weintraub is a native New Yorker with degrees from Yale College and Harvard Law School. Prior to her appointment to the FEC, Weintraub was Of Counsel to the Political Law Group of Perkins Coie LLP and Counsel to the House Ethics Committee.
