Dr. Julie Ducharme speaks with Teresa Martin a Women’s Health and Hospice Nurse, Associate Therapist, and author of poetry and prose who discusses her life experiences and highlights them in her most recent book, Fly with Me: One Woman's Leap into a Life of Love and Joy.

Teresa Martin RN, MS, AMFT

Teresa Martin is a Women’s Health and Hospice Nurse, Associate Therapist, and Author of poetry and prose. She gives you what she has — her story. Teresa is dedicated to the experiences of women, their health, and how their stories transform the world. Her recent publication Fly with Me: One Woman's Leap into a Life of Love and Joy, reflects what Teresa desperately needed to discover during a period of darkness in her life: What does it really look like and feel like, to change your life? She didn't want anecdotes - she wanted the real feelings, the real answers. What she found was a process that worked for her to change her life and leap into a life of love and joy. She gives you her gift of vulnerability on each page, so that you may become more comfortable with your own. So that you too, may leap into your life of love and joy. Teresa's past work has been published by the American Psychological Association's Magination Press, Cambridge University Press, BraughlerBooks, and Cordella Magazine. Excerpts from Fly with Me have been reprinted by the American Nurses Association of California, the American Nurses Association's HealthyNurse HealthyNation, and Nurse.org. She has been featured in podcasts, performed poetry readings for audiences near and far, and loves to make book club appearances to share in the journey to joy.

Teresa currently lives in Los Angeles with her partner of over thirty years, two young adult children, their beloved dog Harley and of course lots of boards and books. She is always up for joining the ladies to surf gentle waves or fine-tune a good tale over a strong cup of coffee. Her next adventures include a comedic tale co-authored with Dishongh Scavo Barte about caregiving, called Gertie's Guide (2022). She's also putting together the trip of a lifetime to the Himalayas to live and learn with the Kung Fu Nuns.

The Happy Bean Project takes a simple concept of connecting though coffee and furthers that connection into pairing people living on the street and people suffering with mental health issues to resources that are already available. We are a 501c3 nonprofit veteran operated charitable coffee project. We currently have a funding coffee trailer located at 111 Plantation Dr Lake Jackson Texas, that helps fund our outreach events in Harris County and our community events in Brazoria County.

Our team of volunteers go to homeless shelters, mental health facilities and the streets to serve coffee food, clothing and hygiene donations. Through coffee we are able to show those in need that we care about them. Giving them hope and a person to talk to while sipping coffee. The goal is to save lives. To help prevent suicide and to get people talking about mental health through coffee.

As we grow, we are dedicated to connecting local veterans, people suffering with mental health issues and people without homes with a network of mental health resources and any other services they may need. This starts by serving quality coffee and forming strong relationships in the community.

Dr. Ducahrme speaks with Ilana Jankowitz. She was born and raised in South Africa where I grew up with 3 older brothers and one younger. We lost our dad when I was just 14 which made it very difficult for my mom to be able to provide for us all. I recall my mom working 2 jobs to try and make ends meet, but often heard her crying late at night because she wasn’t able to pay all the bills. When we had a celebration of some kind, my mom used to get my cousins to bring the food to our house. I went to birthday parties with very small gifts for my friends. I felt that I did not fit in and embarrassed by our situation. I was not dressed as well as my friends or had the toys they had. We did not have anything luxurious. I felt poor.

When I married and started a family of my own, I wanted a different life for my children. I overcompensated dramatically, always buying them the latest toys and designer clothes, throwing elaborate birthday parties and taking them on super expensive holidays. I had no idea about keeping a budget and was always overspending. My credit cards were often maxed out and we had no savings for a rainy day.

When our kids were 5 and 7, my husband took a contract in Europe and we moved to Luxembourg. Feeling guilty about uprooting the children and taking them away from their home, family, and friends I sought to appease it by overspending. So the pattern continued.

Every time a credit card statement arrived in the post, my husband and I would get into a fight. “The amount on the statement is a limit, not a target,” he would tell me. I was told to keep a budget but I barely knew what that meant or how to do it. Some months he didn’t want to get into another fight with me so would let it go. I saw this as my opportunity to shop again and would then hide the purchases from him.

Jen was not expected to live through the night, but God miraculously intervened. She was in a coma for 5 weeks and had severe traumatic brain injuries and multiple skull fractures.

The process of emerging from the coma took weeks and the doctors warned that Jen would be cursing and screaming in confusion. Instead, she was praying out loud and singing praise songs continuously.

Jen didn’t remember that 2+2=4. She didn’t know that she was hurt. She didn’t even know she had a brother. However, she knew every word to every praise song and every scripture she had hidden in her heart. It was amazing! The power of the Holy Spirit was so alive in her.

Although still recovering and still suffering from memory loss and “Cortical Blindness,” Jen is an awesome example of God’s grace. This teenager, who was once a quiet, deep-thinker, is now expressing her passion for God out loud to everyone she meets. She is uninhibited in her worship and excitement for the Lord.

Jen says, “I will never doubt my Lord and my Savior. He is the one healing me daily.

Since the tragic wreck the Barrick family’s commitment to serve God and proclaim His Faithfulness is stronger than ever!

Bad Apple was founded by a dynamic female duo committed to increasing access to fruits and veggies. After graduating from college, Anya moved to New York City and realized how difficult it was to go grocery shopping. First of all, fresh produce, a staple in her diet, was so expensive in a city with one of the highest costs of living in the country. What’s more, every trip to the store involved strategically picking a combination of items to last her through the week that she could also haul five blocks and up the stairs to her third-floor apartment. Frustrated by the lack of options, she partnered with Stefanie, a fourth-generation produce industry veteran, to come up with a solution to serve the city they both call home.

I didn't have a childhood. Seven years of abuse took that away. I felt ashamed, invisible, ugly, and unworthy of feeling joy. So when my two daughters were little, I decided to give them something that I never had: a happy childhood memory.

My idea was to sew them a beautiful, super-comfortable twirly dress. Something that would make them twirl with joy. I enrolled in some sewing classes and came up with a design for a reversible dress. Fortunately, I live close to the Los Angeles Fashion district, so I was able to find some amazing fabrics. Everything about my creation was costly: the high quality fabric, the 4 thread stitching, the way the itchy seams were sandwiched away from their bodies… but so what? This was a special gift, so no expense was spared.

My daughters absolutely loved their reversible twirly dresses (the Original Reversible Twirly Dress®) and wore them to school every day. Soon other moms were asking me to sew dresses for their kids. I told them how much I’d have to charge, but they didn’t care. They immediately recognized the quality and the joy my dresses brought. A business was born. I called it “TwirlyGirl.”

It didn’t take long before a local boutique heard about my dresses and called to place an order. At first, I hand sewed them all on my dining room table. When demand took off, I found local sewers to do the work. Things were getting serious!

The first time the sewers delivered samples for my approval, I wasn’t too happy. Even though they were professionals who had sewn for major brands, I found their construction techniques to be a little shoddy. I told them how I wanted my dresses sewn with the same love and attention to detail I used on my daughters’ dresses, even though it would surely increase labor costs. They were shocked. Most brands look for ways to cut costs by creating disposable clothing. But I’m not most brands. I never set out to create a children’s clothing line. I set out to create a happy childhood memory.

Today, TwirlyGirl is worn by children all across the world. Even though I didn’t have a happy childhood, I get to experience that joy through the photos and videos that customers send us.

People sometimes say there’s no reason to buy quality clothes for their children because they’re just going to outgrow them. We use stretchy fabrics and design our styles with a growing room. Most customers tell us their kids are able to wear our clothes for 2+ years. But yes, eventually they will outgrow their TwirlyGirl dress. They’ll also outgrow fairies, cardboard rocket ships, and the magic of wearing a twirly dress. This thing called childhood is all too short. I say, let them enjoy the magic of their favorite dress while they still can.

I’m grateful that my daughters got to experience the joy of a TwirlyGirl dress, and I hope your children will too. I believe it will be the dress of their childhood.

Forever Twirling,

Cynthia Jamin
