Grady Ansel King, Sr., 99, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home Wednesday, June 3, 2020. He was born August 27, 1920 in Pickens County, a son of Robert and Texieanna Alexander King.
Grady served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) as a teenager, serving at both Jones Gap and Parris Mountain. He joined the US Army and proudly served his country during World War II. Oh, the stories he could tell. When he finished his time there, he became a sales rep for Keebler Bakery.
Grady was an early member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Later he was involved in the building and growth of East Clemson Baptist Church. He served as deacon at both churches.
Grady's hobby was dealing with antiques. He successfully was able to parlay that into a second career. He loved going out and finding things and learning their history and story. He would bring things back and sell them in his shop, Roller Mill Antiques right in Central.
Grady is survived by a daughter, Betty Bishop and husband Rick of Spartanburg; sons, Ansel and wife Patti of Seneca, Bobby and wife Toni of Clemson, and Scott of Columbia; 15 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and 14 great great grandchildren. In addition to his parents Grady was predeceased by his wife, Georgia in 2004; a daughter, Patricia Warren; 5 brothers; and 3 sisters.
Graveside services for the family will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at Memory Gardens in Clemson. Military rites will follow.
Those who wish to remember Grady in a special way may make donations in is memory to East Clemson Baptist Church, 230 Frontage Rd, Clemson, SC 29631, or to Interim Healthcare, Hyland Rd., Greenville, SC 2961.
COVID- 19 Convalescent Plasma Recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the emergency use of convalescent plasma for individual patients who are critically ill with COVID-19. Although many details remain uncertain, The Blood Connection is preparing to collect and distribute these products for patient treatment. Dr. Robert Rainer, medical director at The Blood Connection told WYFF News 4 "After you get infected, your immunity is there and what we have are antibodies that is present in plasma we can transfer to somebody else." Dr. Rainer joined The Morning Answer to discuss why this is important to the Carolina's and the overall blood supply in the area.

An explosion and resulting fire in the home of John and Brenda Vaughn resulted in severe injuries to Mrs. Vaughn and her two-year-old daughter, Becky. Pastor Vaughn was completing his seventh month as pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina when the accident happened. Mrs. Vaughn sustained third-degree burns over 65% of her body in an attempt to rescue her daughter Becky from what would have been certain death. Her two-year-old sustained third-degree burns over 95% of her body. Neither were expected to live through this tragedy.
Seven months later, Mrs. Vaughn was released from the South Carolina Burn Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Seven months after Mrs. Vaughn’s release, the Shriner’s Burns Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, allowed Becky to return home. Becky is one of only a few children to survive an almost total body burn along with its many complications. With recuperation as the primary concern, two years quickly passed, and the issue of Becky’s schooling surfaced. Her father began to search for a school that would be able to minister to Becky’s special physical needs as well as her academic and spiritual needs. At the time, the Vaughn’s two older children were enrolled in a private Christian school where academics were presented in the context of a biblical world view. They set out to find such a school for Becky. Two of the three needs could have been met in the schools in the Greenville area. However, accommodations were not available to meet her special physical needs. After much prayer, consideration and counsel from individuals with relevant backgrounds, Pastor Vaughn began Hidden Treasure Christian School in August of 1981.

I sometimes talk about a Sunday Sermon I have heard as part of my "Pastor Profile" series. Dr. Charlie Boyd….one of the teaching Pastors at Fellowship Greenville…. has a way of "simplying" things so that I can understand them. The Bible is sometimes hard for me to understand and the thing that Fellowship Greenville does, that I appreciate, is explore whole books of the Bible.
Right now…they are in the middle of a series called…”Believe…The Gospel of John."
On Sunday Pastor Boyd covered the story we have all heard....Jesus turning water into wine. Have you ever thought about Mary, the mother of Jesus, being a wedding coordinator? I had not, yet in this story Mary appears to call on her son to save this wedding celebration from a potential disaster when they ran out of wine.
Mary says, “They’ve run out of wine, do something.”
Jesus replies: “Woman, what does this have to do with me. My hour has not yet come.”
We know how the story goes from here....Jesus saves the day by turning the water into wine. Of course, this is one of a number of "miracles" Jesus performs to show his followers who he is. The point Charlie made in his sermon.....and the take away for me.....Jesus (and Christians) can have a sense of humor. Jesus does not consider any request "too small" or trivial. With the 2020 Presidential election just around the corner there has been a lot of discussion about President Donald Trump being nominated for a second term at the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, NC next year. Former SC Governor Mark Sanford is considering a challenge with former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld and former Congressman Joe Walsh already announced. Walsh served only one term in Congress and what kind of “republican” can be elected Governor of Massachusetts? Neither of these two gentlemen are hardly qualified to be President. Mark Sanford, maybe in another life? The real question is why change horses in the middle of the race? Donald Trump prevailed in the most crowded GOP Presidential Primary in history. What can we learn in another primary that we don’t already know about Donald Trump? I have talked with a number of GOP party activists who do not see the need in going through the process in 2020 for many reasons. I agree. Let’s save our resources, get behind Donald Trump and get him re-elected in 2020. I spoke with Greenville County GOP Chairman, Nate Leupp, recently and he seems to agree.

The largest-ever Congressional delegation just returned from Israel where a total of 41 Democrats and 31 Republicans got a firsthand view of the complex security challenges Israel faces and to express their unconditional, bipartisan support for the Jewish state. Lake Toxaway Charities has been a viable part of Lake Toxaway since 1975 when seasonal residents Ben and JoJo Walton began hosting an annual golf tournament to raise money for the local Toxaway EMS/Fire Department. Subsequent donations helped build the Toxaway Community Center and continued supporting the volunteer fire department, which at that time received no county funds.
As of its fiscal year-end 2018, LTC has donated over $2 million to 43 Transylvania County charities. This is a testament to the generosity of Lake Toxaway Estates residents, who care deeply about the greater community in which they live, whether seasonally or full-time. Lake Toxaway Charities continues to make a positive impact on the County’s charitable and non-profit organizations and the people who live and work among us. Tom and Lorraine Lucas moved to Upstate SC, not because of the beauty and all the area has to offer, but to be close to family and try to help find their son's killer. It all started on November 6, 2003 when a customer found four employees murdered in the Superbike Motorsports in Chesnee, SC. It wasn't until November 3, 2016, when local realtor Todd Kohlhepp was arrested for the kidnapping of Kala Brown and murder of her boyfriend Charlie Carver, that the Lucas' later learned that Kohlhepp was the murderer they had been searching for. Former FBI agent, John Douglas says “they may be out there, but in my experience over many years, I haven’t seen one quite like him,” referring to Kohlhepp in his new book, “Killer Across the Table." Jamie Rathburn has attracted national attention by getting arrested after she entered her child’s school without authorization, shouted “threateningly” at several eight and nine-year-olds and went on a curse-filled tirade against a teacher, according to a report and reported on Fox News. Ms. Rathburn was upset that the school was not doing enough to stop bullying against her son and felt she could better explain to the other kids that type of behavior was unacceptable. Ms. Rathburn join me on The Morning Answer to tell her side of the story.

Prominent Upstate SC realtor Todd Kohlhepp's double life fell apart when he was arrested Nov. 3, 2016 after authorities found Kala Brown chained up in a shipping container on Kohlhepp's 96-acre Woodruff property. Ms. Brown had been missing from nearby Anderson, SC for two months. Kohlhepp was charged with kidnapping Brown, sexually assaulting her and killing Charlie David Carver, who was Brown's boyfriend at the time. He was later charged with killing a Spartanburg couple, Johnny Coxie and Meagan McCraw Coxie, before confessing to the Superbike quadruple murder, a homicide investigation going on since Nov. 6, 2003 when he shot Scott Ponder, Brian Lucas, Beverly Guy and Chris Sherbert at a Chesnee, SC motorcycle shop.

Kohlhepp is serving out seven life sentences in a South Carolina prison after being convicted of killing these seven people. Daniel Gross, now with The Greenville News, was working with The Spartanburg Herald when authorities arrested Kohlhepp and has followed the case since. A same-sex couple in Greenville have filed a lawsuit against South Carolina and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services because they were not accepted to participate in a foster care program run by Miracle Hill Ministries in Upstate SC. The couple says their application was denied last month by Miracle Hill Ministries for failing to meet the agency's religious criteria.
Eden Rogers and Brandy Welch said they chose Miracle Hill because they are the largest fostering agency in the Upstate. LGBT advocates, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the couple, argue since the agency receives taxpayer dollars, they should not be able to discriminate based on religion or sexual orientation.
"Governor McMaster's position has nothing to do with keeping anyone from fostering children and has everything to do with protecting Miracle Hill's ability to exercise its own religious freedom," a statement released from the Governor's office said.

Ralph Norman is a lifelong resident of South Carolina's 5th district. He studied at Rock Hill public schools, graduating from Rock Hill High School in 1971. New F-16 fighter jets will soon be made in the Upstate and shipped overseas. Lockheed Martin made the announcement in Greenville that they’ll be manufacturing F-16’s and testing locally before selling them off to U.S. allies like Bahrain and Slovakia. According to Dr. Peter Navarro, Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, F-16 production was based in Fort Worth, Texas before coming to South Carolina and should create about 400 jobs locally. Dr. Navarro spent a few minutes on The Morning Answer prior to making the announcement with SC officials.

John McCravy represents District 13 (Greenwood) in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Rep. McCravy is the sponsor of the SC Fetal Heartbeat Protection from Abortion Act (H.3020), better known as the “Heartbeat Bill.” Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a fight to save unborn lives. A group of 71 SC Legislators gathered yesterday in the lobby of the state house…united in their effort to reform civil asset forfeiture in South Carolina. It was a bipartisan group…lead by Rep Alan Clemmons who talked about a similar bill being introduced in the past that never in his words…”saw the light of day” after being filed. According to Rep. Clemmons the thing that has changed is the attitude of lawmakers after The Greenville News started publishing it's investigative series TAKEN.
The TAKEN team spent two years documenting every civil asset forfeiture case from 2014 to 2016 in the state — more than 3,200 cases involving more than 4,000 people — to show police had seized more than $17 million from people. Most of that cash ended up in the hands of police, and reform advocates say that creates an incentive for police to seek profit from forfeiture. The investigation found that in 19 percent of cases no one was charged with a related crime, and in nearly 20 percent of cases someone was charged with a crime but not convicted.

The Original Mad Man: Illustrations by Mac Conner February 9, 2019 – May 12, 2019 Between 1940 and 1960, before advancements in print technology and the proliferation of photography, ad companies relied on illustrators, Ad Men, to give their brands a visual identity. Advertisements in popular magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Women’s Day and McCall’s established a shorthand for aspirational, middle-class American living: fedoras, cigarette holders, swooning large-eyed women and men in sharply tailored leisurewear.
The Original Mad Man: Illustrations by Mac Conner, a special exhibit organized by the Museum of the
City of New York, features the work of McCauley (Mac) Conner, one of the leading “Ad Men” of the 1950s and 60s. During this time, Conner’s captivating advertising and editorial illustrations graced the pages of major magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, Woman’s Day, and The Saturday Evening Post, helping shape the popular image of postwar America.
The exhibit explores the enduring influence of commercial artists on 1960s fashion, film, music, literature, social norms and art; as well as one man’s prolific career in New York City, the world’s media capital and the country’s publishing center, in the pivotal years after World War II.
Over 70 original hand-painted illustrations, pastel sketches and ephemera from Conner’s private collection highlight his illustration process. Correspondence with editors and art directors provide visitors with a glimpse inside the dynamic world of publishing at a time when the advertising industry was at its height and almost entirely on New York’s Madison Avenue. Conner and his “Mad Men” (Madison Avenue) contemporaries perfected the art of the sale and transformed American culture.

Senator Lindsey Graham was in Upstate South Carolina this week speaking at First Monday in Greenville and then joined me on The Morning Answer w/Joey Hudson for a few minutes this morning. We covered President Trump's troop withdrawal in Syria; Trump appointments to fill vacant judgeships, and of course, border wall funding. When asked if President Trump will declare an "emergency" to get the needed funding Senator Graham says he doesn't believe the President needs to use his emergency powers. Senator Graham says the President, as Commander in Chief, can order more troops to the border and while there...build the wall!!

As the South Carolina General Assembly again debates the merits of "medical marijuana" as defined in the recently proposed "Compassionate Care Act" we have to ask ourselves who is really driving this movement? Is it people who are truly interested in "health care" or is there an outside influence wanting to push this industry into our state for profit? It appears there is an organized effort to "educate" citizens of SC on the benefits of medical marijuana. Last fall the S.C. Compassionate Care Alliance launched a tour in support of legalizing medical cannabis. The question is who's "educating" citizens of SC on the "horror" stories of what this drug can do to users and their families? Organizations like the Phoenix Center see the destruction caused by marijuana and simply want further testing and FDA input before doctors can start writing prescriptions. The South Carolina Medical Association opposes legalizing the drug until further study. Granted, it's hard to question the parents of a child who has seizures and believe this drug could help. It's hard to argue with a veteran who suffers from PTSD who thinks marijuana calms his anxiety. However, it's not hard to argue that marijuana is still a drug and is addictive!! Try to tell the parents of Thomas, who was very athletic, played football, basketball , baseball and was also an honor student that marijuana is not addictive and you'll have an argument on hand. Thomas' parents believe marijuana robbed him of the life God intended for him to live.

Amy Ryberg Doyle is originally from Aiken, South Carolina. She is the oldest of three children, and her call to serve has been a major role of her family heritage—Her brother, Kyle, was a Special Forces Army captain serving three tours in Afghanistan and is now a doctor; her sister, Shana, is a teacher; her father, Greg, served in the SC State Senate; her mother, Betty, is a retired teacher and has been a lifelong community volunteer.
Doyle’s parents had a family business where all of her family worked. Her father bought a small “filling station” and grew it into a chain of convenient stores across South Carolina. At the dinner table, her parents taught her the importance of faith values, giving to others and fighting for her values. She remembers when her parents finally made a profit from the small business and then used those resources to help build a house with Habitat for Humanity. She understands that local small businesses are the backbone to a successful community.
Doyle’s father first ran for office and served in the South Carolina State Senate for 20 years. He was a straight talker; what could be said with 20 words, he usually said with 5. Doyle’s parents currently live in Aiken and are celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2018.
She has now been married for 20 years and has four wonderful children. She is running for South Carolina State Senate District 6 because we need NEW energy and leadership in South Carolina to create solutions to fix our roads and infrastructure, lower taxes to support local businesses and protect the unborn. Doyle is currently City Councilwoman for District 1 of the City of Greenville and is the Chairperson of Planning and Neighborhoods committee which oversees redevelopment of neighborhoods, streets and parks.
She has been a longtime supporter of Law Enforcement, new School Resource Officers and the Police Department wage increases. She voted in favor of an additional downtown police precinct to keep Greenville safe for all families.
She supports small businesses and she led the new Anniversary Discount program which rewards longtime businesses with rebates. A total of $500,000 has been reimbursed to local businesses.

Listen as we discussed the issues in this special election for Senate District 6. Plan to vote on Tuesday, January 22nd in the GOP Primary.
Representative Dwight Loftis grew up in the Travelers Rest and Taylors areas of Greenville County. He graduated from North Greenville College in 1966 and went into the insurance business, where he eventually owned his own agency.
His interest in public service was first kindled when he was nine years old watching and listening to candidates in Presidential debates. But it was one summer at his insurance agency that eventually pushed him to run for office. He discovered that rising seniors, students hired for part-time work, lacked a number of basic requisite skills needed for the workplace.
He began to work with the Greenville County School District’s Business Education Partnership to make students aware of various career opportunities and what skills would be needed. From there, Loftis served a term on the school board before being elected to serve District 19 in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1996.
During his extensive legislative career, Rep. Loftis has not forgotten those part-time student workers at his insurance office. A member of the Education Oversight Committee, he is still motivated by crafting legislation that will help prepare young people for a successful career after graduation.
Education is at the center of a thriving economy. Representative Loftis efforts in education and working with the Department of Commerce enhance job opportunities and a better life for working South Carolina families. Rep. Loftis is ready to leverage his legislative experience and relationships to advance a conservative agenda in the Senate.
Strong families make for a stable state and nation. Rep. Loftis is married to Sandra, his wife of over fifty years. They have three children and three grandchildren. They are members of Clearview Baptist Church.

Jeffrey Stringer is a native of Northern Greenville County and was raised in the Blue Ridge community. After graduating from Blue Ridge High School, he earned a degree in International Studies from the University of South Carolina.
While in college he became heavily involved in Republican campaigns while working in the direct mail and printing department for a political consulting firm. Upon graduation, he was offered a job as Operations Manager for the mail and printing division and worked behind the scenes to help get Republicans elected on the Local, State and Federal level.
In his 6 years following graduation, he saw the Republican majority in the House grow from 10 to 24 and the Republicans gain control of the Senate for the first time in over a century when Sen. Verne Smith of Greer switched parties in 2000.
Since 2004, he has worked with Stringer Resource Group in Greer, which is owned by his uncle, Rep. Tommy Stringer. He has worked with local business owners over the past 15 years designing and administering pension plans to help themselves and their employees better prepare for retirement. In 2008, he was actively involved with the campaign to get Tommy Stringer elected to the State House.
In 2004, Jeffrey married Elise Tyndall of Irmo, SC. Upon Elise’s graduation from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, they moved to Greenville. Currently, Elise serves as Pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Greer. Their 2 sons, Tyndall (7) and Jones (4), attend Crestview Elementary School.
After over 2 decades of helping Republicans get elected, Jeffrey decided it was his time to give back to the community that has given so much to him and his family.

Perry Tuttle was a Clemson football standout and is known for the game winning catch in 1981 that gave the Tigers the National Championship and landed Tuttle on the cover of Sports Illustrated. His career continued into the National Football League (Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Atlanta Falcons) and Canadian Football League (Winnipeg Blue Bombers). Now, he is known for his inspirational speaking, sports marketing, and sports ministry.
Perry joined me to talk about his days at Clemson and how that 1981 team helped form the foundation that has allowed Clemson football to continue to succeed.
Coach Danny Ford took over as head coach at the end of the season in 1978...just in time to coach the Tigers to a win in the Gator Bowl. It would be just a few short years later that Coach Ford would show the sports world that this small southern school was National Championship material by defeating Nebraska in the 1981 Orange Bowl. Coach Ford is a legend around Clemson, SC and I am honored to have spent a few minutes with him to talk about his success as a head football coach and what he thinks about the Clemson Tigers chances of winning another national title.

Six years ago, Colorado took the first step in a movement that has swept the nation: legalizing marijuana. While some supported the move there are no facts about what happens when states increase access to marijuana. The people of the 1st Congressional District forgave Mark Sanford for his "hiking trip" on the Appalachian Trail (in which he embarrassed the entire state of SC) and returned him to Congress a few years ago. Back in June in the GOP Primary, due to Sanford's constant defiance of President Trump's effort to Make America Great Again, the voters in Sanford's district came to their senses and chose Katie Arrington instead. Sanford could not accept the voters decision and would not support Ms. Arrington in Tuesday's election.....this helped the democrats regain the seat since losing it decades ago. Sanford claims it wasn't a partisan thing (or anti-Trump) but, that Ms. Arrington was wrong on some local issues. The national democrats spent a lot of money on their candidate. Everyone knew it could be a close race....and it was..... Democrat Joe Cunningham won by 1.4%. Who knows for sure, but Mark Sanford's support probably would have made the difference. Shame on Mark Sanford!!! Sanford, once again, proved that he only thinks of himself and not the people he claims to serve. Let's make it clear to Sanford that SC is done with him. Call his Congressional office ((843) 352-7572) and let him know how disappointed you are in his selfish actions. In a time that every conservative vote in Congress counts...we just lost one because of Sanford's arrogance.

What do Guardians ad Litem do?
Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteers get to know the child and everyone involved in the child’s life, including family, teachers, doctors, social workers and others. They gather information about the child and what the child needs. Their recommendations to the court help the judge make an informed decision about a child’s future. GAL volunteers provide a stable presence in a child’s life, remaining on each case until the child finds a safe, permanent home.
Who can serve as a volunteer GAL?
GAL volunteers are people like you. Some volunteers work full time, some are retired, some are students, some are teachers, some are grandparents; but they are all extraordinary people who want to make the voices of abused and neglected children heard.
Why are there volunteer GALs in court?
In South Carolina, children are not present when decisions about their futures are being made. GAL volunteers bridge that gap and tell the judge what children want, without children having to experience trauma in a courtroom setting.
Pat Thomas is a volunteer in Greenville and is very passionate about her work with these kids. Take a minute to listen to my visit with Pat.
Guy Furay is a candidate for South Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District, representing the American Party of South Carolina. An active member of the Upstate community for years, Guy is owner and founder of The Insurance Source, based in downtown Greer, S.C., where he has been able to build expertise in health insurance and become an expert on the details of the Affordable Care Act.
Throughout his career, Guy has put people first, dedicating his time to various committees within the Upstate Chambers of Commerce, as well as local non-profits like Compass of Carolina, which focused on counseling and services for victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. He also has served as a coach and mentor for local youth sports. He is married to the lovely Myra Ruiz, an anchor on WACH FOX in Columbia, and has two sons, Jackson and William, and a daughter, Jasmine.
Guy decided to run for Congress after fully realizing that his “listen first” and “people first” mentality wasn’t shared by current leadership, leaving our local citizens struggling. He desires real progress—independent of the two-party system and its inefficiencies—something desperately needed at this time in our nation’s history.

When Roland Bergeron, owner of a custom home building company, first heard that more than 800 million people in the world didn’t have access to clean water, he was shocked. An engineer by trade, he became even more involved in water ministry in 2002, when he went on his first mission trip to Central America. On that trip, his heart was so stirred that he continued to participate in multiple trips to Central America. Still, Roland knew that God was calling him to take more action, and in 2002 he led a group of volunteers to found Water of Life to provide water wells to those most in need of clean water in this world. In 2004, Roland made the life-changing trip to Liberia, West Africa, soon adding Sierra Leone and eventually India to the service area. Finding his life's calling, Roland turned over his home building company to his son's care, and Water of Life has since spread, serving hundreds of thousands of people every year in these three countries. It was a pleasure to spend a few minutes with Roland to talk about Water of Life's mission and how we can help.

The SC Peach Festival began in July of 1977. The festival has always been held in July because of it being the peak season for peaches. Even though peaches are not the main farming crop in Gaffney, the SC Peach Festival still takes place as an annual event due to popularity and demand. Events such as the infamous Mug Bog, Road Race, Pageant, BBQ Cook-off and Downtown events attract visitors every year. Some events have come and gone but none the less the festival still goes on. Tuesday's GOP primary in SC had a few surprises with one of those being the upset defeat of Mark Sanford by freshman SC legislator Katie Arrington. I had the chance to visit with Mike Gallagher for a few minutes to discuss the trend we are seeing this year with candidates being branded "anti-Trump" in GOP primaries....and losing!!!
