Paul’s instructions to Timothy for the church and church leaders now discuss money and our heart. Money is a gift from God and useful servant for His kingdom. But when our heart makes money our God and our master, then we are in trouble. The teachings of Jesus help guide us through Paul’s instructions.

Our best witness may be how well we serve others, especially in our jobs. And as it gets harder to do that, the more powerful that may be. Yet let us remember that we can serve today because our future is longer and better than what it may cost us today. Do not grow weary in doing good for in due season we shall reap the reward if we do not lose heart. (see Galatians 6:9-10)

Becoming a Christian brings us into new relationships that we may not have anticipated. We have a heavenly Father, greater than any earthly father. We gain brothers and sisters who also have the same Father with us. And we can experience that in church … if we act as Christians should in being family as we should. Paul tells Timothy some of what that looks like.

We met outside on a pleasant fall Sunday morning to rehearse how God has been faithful to meet with His people when they gather for worship. And that worship would be together as they sang, prayers, and heard the word of God read to them, explained, and applied to their life by the Spirit through the preaching. This is God’s charge to those who lead the church through Paul’s charge to Timothy.

Paul continues his exhortation to Timothy of what to teach as a faithful pastor for God. Bodily workouts are beneficial in the short term, Paul says, but exerting oneself towards godliness is beneficial both in the short-term and for eternity. Keep God the major priority for life.

The LORD sends Ezekiel on a mission of little success – to warn God’s people to turn back to Him before they are destroyed. But Ezekiel must not falter, but remain faithful to his call from the LORD. And plead with the people that the LORD desires them to turn back to Him from their wickedness. Turn and Live.

The household of God is the church. And Paul says that the church as the united people of the Bible is the pillar of truth. And the greatest truth the church has is the gospel of Jesus Christ. We cannot afford to be distracted or deceived from the proclamation of Jesus.

Acts 6 and Acts 13 both mention that the church leaders “laid hands” on the new servant leaders before sending them to the work. The official term for that is ordination – a physical symbol of a spiritual reality that confirms the work of the Spirit and identifies the new person as one with the others to continue the work of the Lord.

While they are not called “deacons” in the book of Acts, the apostles instruct the church to appoint men to help them focus on the ministry of the word and to take care of the material needs of the church body. Yet the characteristics that these men should have are much like the characteristics that we saw Paul give Timothy – to be of good reputation and walking in the Spirit.

Jesus the Son of God is the only human who lived the perfect life in God’s eyes. Yet the Word still gives us these characteristics to be seen in pastors and elders. While we may feel inadequate at times, the bigger concern would be if we aren’t humbled by this challenge. Pride is the most deadly sin.

Paul sometimes challenges us with doctrines that don’t make as much sense to us as they did in his context. But the instruction is always applicable to us. We need to pray, pray for those who don’t know Jesus as Savior, and we need to make sure we are not a distraction for others knowing him.

Walk worthy of being named for Jesus and of having His Holy Spirit indwelling you. Do not grieve the Spirit by walking more like the world that does not know God with their faculties dulled and blinded to the things of God who is Life. Rather lay aside those behaviors that are corrupt and be cleansed and renewed in your thinking through the Word of God so that your behaviors resemble Christ.

Unity within the body of Christ is not to say there are not different roles and ways to serve in the same body. Christ the Head has designed His body to have a diversity of people within the body so that every one can be equipped and participate in the work that needs to be done. That is a part of growing to maturity in Christ – serving in love through His Spirit.

Unity is not the same as uniformity. Paul has taught the amazing grace of God to bring diverse sinners to Himself through His Son Jesus Christ. Because of this and the indwelling Spirit giving power to live new life – Paul proclaims the challenge for God’s people to live up to that calling by living in unity through the power God has given to live in humility and patience.

Paul prays in writing for the believers in Ephesus a second time in this letter. He prays for them to have strength in the inner man through Christ in their hearts. The Holy Spirit giving them power to know the love of Christ in its surpassing greatness so that they may persevere through the trials of life.

The LORD promises to bring forth a new creation: a new heaven and new earth. And on the new earth, there will be no more curse of corruptibility nor futility. It is hard for us to imagine what eternity in “heaven” will be like, especially a new heaven and earth conjunction. But Isaiah and John in the Revelation give us glimpses that we will still be working and doing jobs that we enjoy for His glory and our pleasure. In Christ, we are redeemed from the penalty for our sin. And having been reconciled in Christ to God also means that the barriers between people groups are broken down in the body of Christ. We are a new creation. Having made peace between us and God, He has made peace possible among the individuals within the body of Christ. And to top it off, through His Holy Spirit He gives us peace within through prayer in Christ.

Paul continues to elaborate on how gracious God for those who are in Christ. In fact, God saving people from their rebellious ways to put them in Christ is the most gracious act God has done for us. The Gideons International Bible Ministry visited us this morning, so this is a short meditation on Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church. Because Paul knew of their faith and love, he thanked God for them and prayed for them to know God’s love and power for them as His church. They had much hope and power in Christ. Paul begins telling them more about it.

In Christ is a recurring thought throughout these verses as Paul describes the blessings we have from the Father. It makes sense because God the Father loves the Son and has given Him all things. At 12 years old, Jesus was accidentally left behind in Jerusalem by his parents. Ancient Landmarks – Come to think of it, all of Scripture is a reliable navigation tool for the journey of life. A solid foundation upon which to build one’s life and for discerning this world’s complexities. How can it be so? God breathed out its very words, guiding the prophets of old as they penned its words. The Spirit preserved His work through time to be available to us as faithful men and women passed it along, translating it, and teaching it to the next generation.

Ancient Landmark – Paul reminds the believers in Corinth that what he taught is also what he learned. What he had received, he delivered to them the same truths to believe and by which one stands in the faith. Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures. He was buried and rose from the dead the third day, according to the Scriptures. And he was seen by many credible witnesses.

Ancient Landmark – the Great Commission Jesus commands His disciples to continue to go and make more disciples of the Kingdom of God. The authority belongs to Jesus and the good news is that He welcomes people from all nations to follow Him in His kingdom of heaven. God created light and then created beings to show a physical light. His image bearers failed to live in His spiritual light. So He sent His Son to be spiritual Light and give spiritual light to those who believe in Him. They become His lights to show His Spiritual light in a dark world. And one day, God will once again combine the physical light and spiritual light to eradicate darkness once and for all from His creation.

The LORD spoke from the mountain these ten commands of His covenant with Israel but they have been taught much longer and wider than there. Jesus expounded them in His gospel of the kingdom (Sermon on the Mount). The apostles taught them and applied them to new Christians regardless of their ethnicity and culture. The prophet asked the LORD what He would do about the wickedness in the nation. The LORD’s answer prompted more questions for Habakkuk. But the LORD reassured His prophet that one day, judgment would come for all those who persist in wickedness and that only through living by faith would any escape condemnation. But when hard times come, will we still trust the LORD? Will we still say “God is good” when the blessings are not evident?

Joshua finishes his life by calling the Israelites to continue to live faithfully to the LORD God. There is a fear that Moses communicated to Joshua and now Joshua passes on to this new generation that they will forget how they have been blessed with such a great setup. The LORD has provided for them and He does not want them giving the credit to the gods of the Canaanites. Rather Joshua challenges the people to faithfully serve the LORD alone with love and loyalty. Just as we should as well.

There is something admirable in fighting against insurmountable odds unless of course that person is fighting against God Almighty. So we wonder why people would choose to lose. But the Canaanites of Gibeon broke ranks with the rest of their Canaanites and decided to surrender to the LORD, God Most High. They would rather be slaves of the LORD than perish eternally. And the LORD honors them by adding them to His own protected people.

The LORD had given very specific instructions for the children of Israel to remind themselves of the covenant with God upon entering the Promised Land of Canaan. Joshua saw the opportunity to obey early and obey fully what the LORD had commanded the Moses, His servant. Rehearse the commands of God now that they were receiving the promises.

The LORD declared that the possessions of Jericho would be banned from the Israelites – accursed like the sin of Canaanites and the valuables would be devoted to God and His tabernacle. But one man and his family chose to violate the ban and would treasure for themselves the accursed things. Thus they brought the curse upon themselves and corruption upon all the rest of the nation. How would God deal with this corruption among His own people? The same as He would among the Canaanites, they would be accursed until repentance and sanctification purified them again.

The children of Israel are learning how to experience victory in the LORD. Being in right relationship with Him, following His directions for life and warfare, and keeping Him in His right place as leader and in their midst. And as they do, they discover that the LORD uses them to rescue more of His people from the midst of Canaanite Jericho. By the mercy of the LORD, He rescues Rahab and her family from His judgment.

The good news is that Jesus the Messiah died for our sins, just as was foretold in Scriptures. He was buried and then He rose from the dead, as was foretold in Scriptures. The Commander of the LORD’s armies appears to Joshua and commands Joshua to remove his shoes for he stands on holy ground. This consecration had already begun as Joshua prepared the sons of Israel to have their hearts circumcised so that they would love the LORD and love one another as God commanded. We need the same work of God in our hearts that we would always be sensitive to God’s working to prune us to life.

Our gospel songs often depict the end of this earthly life as crossing the river into the promised land of heaven, the land of bliss and rest. But that is not what happens in the days of Joshua. The children of Israel cross over the Jordan River in order to begin the hard work of cleansing their promised land of wicked enemies and those shameful practices, without becoming wicked themselves. The scene is of a mighty King crossing with miraculous power, surrounded by His army. The enemy knows, the Lord of all the earth has arrived.

Joshua secretly sent two spies into Canaan. He didn’t know it but God sent them for a more important reason than recon. God knew that Rahab believed in Him and He gave her opportunity to demonstrate her faith in a dramatic way. And thus delivered her into the congregation of the people of God, heroes of faith.

It had been forty long years in the wilderness for the children of Israel. Yet there would be apprehension and fear. Moses had died, the Promised Land had scary and mean people in it, and they were not sure they had what it took to succeed. But the LORD reminds the new leader, Joshua, just what true success looks like – relationship with the LORD who will not leave us not forsake us.

Jesus used stories to reveal insights into the kingdom He was bringing while not judiciously withholding from those who were rejecting the kingdom. Acts 2:41-42 tells us what the followers of Christ did steadfastly – learning the teachings of the apostles, fellowship together, Communion, and prayer. Acts 20:6-13 gives us a vignette of a church in a town called Troas (or Troy) doing those four things on the first day of the week with a special guest, the traveling teacher, Paul the Apostle. We can learn much from this gathering as told by the eyewitness who occasionally traveled with Paul for this journey.

Jesus warns His apostles that trouble is coming that would squeeze the life out of them and try to make them fall away. And that He would not be physically with them as these troubles came. But in His warning, He also gives reasons for hope. They won’t be alone just the same as He wasn’t really alone when His followers fled. Not only can they survive, but they can overcome because Christ overcame. Not only do they have reasons for peace, but Christ gives them joy to the full.

The rule of sin is broken by Christ as He bodily defeated the temptations of sin and He defeats sin in our body through His Spirit. Christ fulfilled righteousness bodily so that He can bring righteousness in our body through His Spirit. How does He do that? By putting to death the sinful temptations and being living sacrifices that are holy and acceptable to God, the good and perfect will of God.

Paul uses an analogy that he says is imperfect but still communicates an essential lesson for us. We have been set free from sin as a slave-master whose wages are corruption, shame, and death. Now that we belong to Christ, why would someone want to still want to work a second job for sin? Sin still pays corruption, shame, and death. Instead, we should work wholehearted for Christ who doesn’t just give us wages but He gifts us right-living, holiness, and eternal life.

Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Lots of ways to translate that one word – imputed, reckoned, counted, credited, and accounted. But we don’t have righteousness without Christ, but by grace through faith in Jesus we can be credited His righteousness. And that makes all the difference.

Justice is a core value of who God is. It is deplorable to Him when injustice takes place – both the punishment of good and the promotion of wickedness. Yet last week we saw that none of us are good. We all have sinned and enjoyed it, guilty before a righteous God. Thankfully mercy is also a core value. God the Father and God the Son orchestrated a plan before time in order to remain righteous and just while also rescuing sinful humans from sin in order to give them righteousness.

It is easy to fool some people. You might be able to fool everyone you know, at least for a little while. But Christ sees both the actions and the thoughts and intents of the heart. And we see that as much as He hates sin, hypocrisy is one of the worst. We are better off coming clean with Him now rather than ignoring the conviction of the Spirit regarding our sins, even our secret ones.

God says through Paul that no one can truly be an agnostic. There is enough evidence in creation to know there is an always and all-powerful Creator who is incorruptible and righteous. The problem is that humanity suppresses what they know and that leads no where good. Instead, it leads to foolish thinking, foolish desires, and foolish feelings which leads to foolish sin practices. And we all are guilty of the ingratitude that starts the downward spiral. But God is a good Parent, He pursues His sinful humans so that some will let Him rescue them. Will you?

It’s not a spectacular story compared to some in the Hebrew Scriptures. But it is significant for important reasons. It marked the end of dark time for the children of Israel when they had lost so much. But through repentance, the children of Israel, led by the prophet and judge, Samuel, experience a powerful victory through the LORD’s help. How? Because they let Him. And they raised a monument to remind them of His help.

Paul writes to the church in Rome to introduce himself. And to know Paul is to know his passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ. So this lengthy letter from the apostle is more about the salvation message than the messenger himself. And his thesis statement is that Jesus has provided righteousness to all sinners who believe Him.

Acts is crucial for connecting the gospel accounts of Jesus to the collection of letters that make up most of the New Testament books. Acts begins with the resurrected Jesus ascending into heaven triumphantly, leaving the apostles to waiting for empowerment from on high. And power is what they get. The Holy Spirit emboldens Peter and the rest of the Twelve to boldly proclaim that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the Father.

If we have peace with God from being reconciled through Christ, we can experience the peace of God from living in the Spirit of God. With the Spirit of God within us, we can experience peace within the body of Christ. No longer just peacekeepers, but we are to be peace-makers – loving one another in concrete ways of grace, mercy, forgiveness, submission, and honor. It radically changes how we live and how we selflessly interact with the world today in light of our eternal home in Christ.

Christmas wouldn’t mean as much if it weren’t for the Resurrection. The Resurrection proved that this descendant of David was (and is) indeed the unique Son of God with power and holiness. And we have been commissioned to share that good news of His unmerited favor and rescue with the nations.

The Prince of Peace has come to establish peace on earth. The first order of business is Peace with God (reconciling rebellious humans with the Holy God). Having peace with God then sets one up to experience the Peace of God (a peace that surpasses understanding and earthly circumstances). As the LORD told through Isaiah and Paul, a peace that guards the heart and mind.

This little psalm flows out of a spiritual disaster for David and all Israel. But you need not to have murdered someone to utilize and value this gem of a prayer to the LORD. This psalm guides us in how to confess our sin and ask for restoration from God toward worship of His greatness.

The poetry of the Psalms can be hard for non-Hebrew readers to understand at times. But the middle section of Psalm 36 crosses the language barrier, even if not all the words do. The covenant love and righteousness of the LORD is extolled in superlatives to remind us why we should trust our lives and joys to His capable hands even when we don’t understand His decisions.

We probably don’t know much about shepherds like folks did in David’s day. But someone who cares for helpless animals by protecting, nurturing, and tending their needs is what David is telling us and more. Let’s see how the illustration of a shepherd with sheep is helpful for us to learn about how God cares for us through Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Which king reigns?
What we see is not all that is going on. There is more at work. But what is revealed from the council room of heaven is even more important. The conversation between Father and Son determines the outcome of the question, which King reigns? We must choose how to respond to this important intel. Believe what we see or believe what is revealed.

The gospel is simple enough for a child yet profound enough to challenge the elders for all of their years. It is an often under-appreciated in not overlooked portion of the Christmas story, just a few days later and before the wise men arrived. Joseph and Mary take their newborn son to fulfill purification and dedication requirements from the Law. And the Holy Spirit had two faithful saints waiting for the coming of the Messiah: Simeon and Anna. And what they proclaim is important for us to know. For it can bring us joy as it brought them great joy to behold the Consolation and Redemption.

The LORD sent Isaiah with a message of repentance and a reminder that God would keep His promises. And the big promise was that the Messiah would still descend from David to defeat the serpent and establish a better kingdom. Isaiah 7:14 is the start of this section and in culminates here with the fourfold double description of the Messiah to be born of the virgin. We have reason to celebrate!

We cover a lot of territory as we remember how Moses failed at Kadesh and was told by God that he wouldn’t be entering the Promised Land. And see who finally replaces and exceeds Moses as Prophet, Priest, and King.

There can be so many distractions and discouragements that tempt us to subtly forget who God is. If we have hard times, we are tempted to doubt Him and His character. If we have it good, we are tempted to forget Him and keep the glory for ourselves. We give God the blame and steal the credit. But Moses warns us to not forget who we often are and remember who God always is.

After forty years in the wilderness, Moses gives the next generation a reminder of what was taught at Mount Sinai, renewing the covenant between the LORD and Israel. The Ten Commandments and the Greatest Commandment – the Shema. Listen and obey! Love the LORD our God. He loved us first

What would be an obscure story from the Israelites journey through the wilderness is used by Jesus to teach Nicodemus about Himself and the offer of eternal life. Jesus will be lifted up (like the bronze serpent) and those who look to Him in faith will find better than healing from deadly snake venom. They will be saved from sin and eternal perishing.
