Welcome to That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. A podcast where yogis, yoga teachers and studio owners share stories of their lives on and off the mat. This isn’t a podcast about how to teach (or do) yoga. It’s two yogis talking about all things “life”…not just yoga.
Hello and welcome to Episode 29 of That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. A podcast where yogis, yoga teachers and studio owners share stories of their lives on and off the mat. I’m Jules Buchanan, a yoga teacher and your host. This week I’m talking to Peter Eyre. Peter is another of my guests based in the north east - in fact I need to share that I actually work for him at the new Hotpod he’s set up with his partner Allie, up here in the lovely town of Morpeth. Having made the decision to take on a Hotpod franchise just before the start of the pandemic, their timing hasn’t made this an easy process so I’ll find out how he’s managed to secure a space and set up a new yoga studio during multiple lockdowns. I’ll also be asking him what working as a franchisee has been like and why he and his partner decided to go down that route, rather than establish their own studio and brand. Prior to teaching yoga, Peter was a headteacher and he made the decision to leave his educational career to start his yoga business so I’ll find out how easy that decision was for him and his partner (Allie is still a headteacher) as well as what the pros and cons are of managing a school. I’ll also be asking him how his career progressed to that point and whether he’d always wanted to be a teacher from the start of his working life. Outside of work and yoga Peter was born in Zambia (of all places) and was really into sports in a competitive way when he was younger - we’re talking county level for rugby, swimming and even pole vault! Nowadays, he has a passion for surfing and loves being part of the surf community in the area. Yes, there’s apparently more people than just Peter that loves going out in the freezing cold of the water off the north east coast to enjoy the waves! I’ll be asking him more about that, as well as how yoga combines with surfing. I’m also interested to know what first led him to yoga sessions. On top of this he’s also into interiors (aren’t we all to a certain extent?) but Peter and Allie are another level - their current house (which is on the beach in Cambois) will be featured in this month’s Good Homes magazine…amazing! So, I think you’ll agree there’s lots of ground to cover….I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Peter through Instagram; @hotpodyogamorpeth or by emailing him at morpeth@hotpodyoga.com If you’ve got any questions for him I’m sure he’d be happy to answer them. His Savasana Sounds are Apricots by Bicep as well as the classic Inner City Life by Goldie.

Hello and welcome to Episode 28 of That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. A podcast where yogis, yoga teachers and studio owners share stories of their lives on and off the mat. I’m Jules Buchanan, a yoga teacher and your host. This week I’m talking to Sidonie Graham. Sidonie (or Sid as she is known) is born and raised in my new neck of the woods in the North East. We met through working together at our new local hotpod in Morpeth and I heard that Sid is into rock climbing. Turns out thats a bit of an understatement (she won the British Mountaineering Youth Championships at the tender age of 13) so I’ll be asking her to share more about her love of climbing, when it started, where it came from and also where it has taken her so far! I read that she had wanted to be a professional climber so I’ll find out if that is still on her radar and what her life would look like if she achieved that goal. As well as finding out about her yoga journey so far (she qualified to teach in 2019 after studying in India) I’ll also be asking Sid what her teaching life was like pre-pandemic, how the pandemic affected her work, and whether she has plans to change what her yoga business looks like now that restrictions are starting to ease up, and face to face teaching is resuming. Sid, like many of us, teaches at a number of local studios as well as specialised yoga for climbers sessions at a local climbing centre. Sid is also, like many of us, worried about the impact of climate change so I’ll ask her to share her views on that, as well as asking her for info on some of her favourite local haunts that I can explore. I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Sid through her Instagram; @northern_soul_yoga If you’ve got any questions for her I’m sure she’d be happy to answer them. Her Savasana Sounds is a track by Triangles in the Mist called Green Depths - there are 3 4ish minute tracks and then an extended 20 minute version, so have a little listen and let her know what you think! Hello and welcome to Episode 27 of That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. A podcast where yogis, yoga teachers and studio owners share stories of their lives on and off the mat. I’m Jules Buchanan, a yoga teacher and your host. This week I’m talking to Kirsty Elliot. Kirsty is based down in Dorset and is founder of The Yoga Within. She runs weekly classes in local villages…places like Berwick St John, Motcombe, Fontmell Magna and Iwerne Minster - they sound so picturesque don’t they! She’s also, like many of us, continuing her online classes for the time being via zoom so I’ll be asking what her thoughts are on that and the future of online yoga classes. As well as weekly classes, Kirsty runs monthly workshops at an old redeveloped mill space and participates in an annual festival in Shaftesbury, which brings yoga, pilates and qi-gong for free to the local community over the summer in conjunction with the local council. I’m interested to hear more about how that came about and understand whether it is something that other yoga teachers might be able to replicate in their local area. As well as being a busy yoga teacher with a thriving business (her classes are fully booked every week) Kirsty is a married Mum of two young children and has 3 dogs so I’ll be asking her how she finds running her business alongside her family commitments. Kirsty predominantly teaches Dru Yoga (alongside yoga nidra) and this isn’t something I know much about so I’m keen to understand more about what her classes are like. Kirsty is also a reiki master so, as well as finding out more about how she got into yoga and subsequently became a teacher…I’d also like to know when she started reiki and how she blends the two areas together. She’s also really into horses - I’m not sure how else you’d say that without it sounding a bit odd but I read that she was a professional horse rider and last year she worked with her local Riding for the Disabled Association to develop yoga sessions with horses which were a great success so I’ll ask her what that was like too. I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Kirsty through her website www.theyogawithin.co.uk or through her Facebook page @theyogawithin Her Savasana Sounds is a track by Ashana called Ave Maria and she also loved Jack Johnson’s version of Imagine. Have a listen to her track recommendations and let her know what you thought about the podcast. If you’ve got any questions for her I’m sure she’d be happy to answer them. Support Enjoyed listening? Hello and welcome to Episode 26 of That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. A podcast where yogis, yoga teachers and studio owners share stories of their lives on and off the mat. I’m Jules Buchanan, a yoga teacher and your host. So, episode 26! I just want to say before I introduce this my guest that that’s a year of podcasting!Thank you so much to all of my interviewees and of course to you guys for listening. If you enjoy the podcast, please can you take a moment to rate it, write a review and subscribe (if you listen through Apple or Spotify etc) as this really helps other people find my podcast and gives me a warm and fuzzy glow as well. So - thank you’s done - let’s crack on with the episode! This week I’m talking to Kelly Hopkinson. Kelly is based in Milton Keynes and says she’s many things to many people, which is, I think, something a lot of us can relate to. If we rewind, travelling took up much of Kelly’s 20’s so we’ll find out more about what that entailed. She then jumped heart first into being a primary school teacher so I’ll be asking her what that life was like and how that career path was for her. Becoming a single, working mum of 2 girls wasn’t part of the plan, yet it became one of her life defining moments so I’ll definitely be asking her more about that and the impact that this has had on her. Kelly is a now a yoga and mindfulness teacher, establishing the Be:Well Club which is a monthly membership of weekly yoga classes, on demand content and wellness tools to make life a little easier. I also want to talk to Kelly about her public speaking, after she did a TedxTalk in 2018 on self-care which has racked almost 114k views on YouTube! Pretty awesome. A chat with Kelly wouldn’t be complete without asking about her friendship and kind of almost sisterhood with Christine Blair (from Episode 6 of this podcast). They’ve got such support for each other, championing each other and working together - it really is an inspiration. Oh, and Kelly is also owner to one of the cutest kittens in the world, Dave, so I’ll be asking her to share some of his antics with her as he’s been featuring of her online yoga classes for her students! I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Kelly by emailing her on hello@kellyhopkinsonyoga.co.uk and she’s on Insta and Facebook as @kellyhopkinsonyoga. Her free facebook group is called @thebewellproject. The link to her TedX Talk is: https://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_hopkinson_learn_to_shine_your_brightest_the_importance_of_self_care_for_teachers_and_everyone or you can see it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O5QIqlDxjg Her Savasana Sounds is a track by Lapsley called Painter and she also recommended a track called station too so have a listen and let us know what you think! This week I’m talking to Chelsea Haden. Chelsea’s handle (if that’s the right word) on Insta is loving life in wellies and it looks like that’s certainly what she’s doing! Scrolling through her insta there’s loads I want to ask her about…her gorgeous SUPing Labrador for starters. There’s lots of walking, woods, water and of course yoga, all in the fantastic backdrop of the Welsh wilds of north Wales. Chelsea is based in the Ceiriog valley (not really sure where that is but I’ll find out) and is teaching a mix of indoor classes as well as outdoor yoga sessions over the summer. Like many of us, Chelsea is moving back to in person classes so I’ll be asking her how she feels about that now that we are slowly coming out of restrictions. She also combines guided walking and wild swimming with yoga for her retreats so I’ll find out more about her love of walking and swimming (as well as kayaking and SUP), her favourite places to go and her passion for sharing yoga, walking and swimming with others. It’s clear that Chelsea is fond of slow and seasonal living, but also embracing the outdoors and the associated adventures that come with that so I’ll be asking what that combination means in reality and the impact of that ethos or way of living has on her day to day life. She’s also got a menagerie of pets including her lab, a cat and some chickens. I want to know if and how they all get along…! Born and raised in urban Manchester I’ll ask Chelsea what her childhood was like and then what city life was like for her in her late teens and early 20s. How did she make the transition to a completely different pace of life in the Welsh countryside? You’ll just have to listen on to find out… I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Chelsea through her social media channels. She’s @LovingLifeInWelliesYoga on Facebook and @LovingLifeInWellies on Instagram. Her Savasana Sounds is music by Fred Westera who can be found on Spotify so be sure to check him out and let Chelsea know what you think! Support Enjoyed listening? This week I’m talking to Caron Lindley. Caron is based in Crick in Northamptonshire and is the founder of Red Hat Yoga and Wellbeing which she started in 2014. (I’ll definitely be finding out where the red hat comes from, don’t worry!) She’s been teaching 5 classes a week as well as one to ones, hosting courses, events and retreats before the pandemic so I’ll find out whether she has continued with teaching online, and where her yoga business is leading her now that things are starting to ease. To give you a hint, Caron is specialising in yoga, coaching and Ayurveda now with her clients so I’ll be asking her more about that area of the business and why Ayurveda is important to her. Caron’s been practising yoga since her teens so we’ll be finding out how and where she started as well as discovering more about her yoga journey and what led her to teaching. She says she started more and more to live yoga from the inside out…sound familiar? So I’ll find out more about that as well as her life before yoga (I should coin that LBY) where she was a marketing guru. Her students appreciate her slower, gentle approach and I’ll be asking Caron about this and her passion for more mindful and restorative styles of yoga. I also read that Caron has a passion for camper vans so I’ll ask her about her new van, which is being built as we speak, what drew her to van life and where she’s planning on going. I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Listeners, you can contact Caron about her Vibrant Living Coaching programme and to arrange a complementary mini Ayurvedic Lifestyle coaching session on 07786 911593, caron@redhatyoga.co.uk or via facebook @caronlindley or her facebook business page – Red Hat Yoga Support Enjoyed listening? This week I’m talking to Rachel Wilkinson. Rachel Wilkinson is based down in Dorset and discovered yoga in 2008. In her LBY (Life Before Yoga), she used mental health services for support with her addition to alcohol and drugs. Rachel was introduced to using yoga and talking therapy to aid her recovery (and to help with the grief of losing her Mum). I want to warn you at this point that this is quite an emotional one. Development of a yoga practice led to her experiencing a profound change in her mental health and helped with her battle against her addictions. After learning so much from her own experiences, she moved into working in mental health services with and supporting those in a similar position the one she was once in. It was during this time in 2015 that she qualified as a yoga teacher with the aim of spreading the benefits to those individuals accessing services and others, who wouldn’t easily find themselves on a yoga mat. Rachel created RawYogi to work with a blend of healing therapies to support people wanting to navigate the modern world more effectively. She uses sound and movement, body and breathwork to encourage and facilitate change so I’ll be asking her to explain a little more about how she does that, as well as about how her rawsome retreats are looking for 2021/2022 (that’s right, I said rawsome!) In 2018 Rachel founded CYC Community Yoga Collective which is a grassroots not for profit community project making wellbeing accessible for all, whilst valuing the skills of teachers, facilitators and therapists. It is that that is key for me…She aims to build community from the ground up which sounds fabulous so I’ll be asking her to share some more information about how this initiative works, how it’s been working during covid, and what her plans for the future are and how we can help. As I said earlier, this is an emotional one and its also a bit sweary so buckle up! I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation… Rachel shared a few tracks with me after the podcast for her Savasana Sounds and she also has a playlist on Spotify that she is happy to share. * Blue Lullaby by BE * Red Light by Gaussuan Curve * Beginnings (feat East Forest) by MC Yogi * Dunes by Chequerboard
Have a little listen to them and see what you think! Listeners, please let Rachel know what you thought of the podcast - you can reach her by emailing rachel@communityyogacollective.org or visit her website www.communityyogacollectve.org (yes, that’s org, people!) If you’ve got any questions for her or would like to get involved with CYC I’m sure she’d love to hear from you. Support Enjoyed listening? Then please rate, review and subscribe to the podcast. This week I’m talking to Rosie Lawson. I was actually introduced to Rosie from a previous interviewee from the podcast, Eva Paterson from Episode 9, so I’m looking forwards to getting to know Rosie during this conversation. She works with Eva and teaches at her studio space, Choose You Yoga and Wellness Hub, in Livingston, Scotland. As well as teaching yoga, Rosie is a coach and has a women’s membership group all about self development and self care incorporating coaching, yoga pranayama, meditation and all the tools we use to manage our lives. In her LBY (Life Before Yoga), she worked in corporate medical sales for 25 years. This was a high stress job, so we’ll find out more about what that entailed and what led Rosie towards teaching yoga and becoming a coach. Prior to her career in medical sales, Rosie was also an intensive care nurse so she was very much used to working in adrenaline fuelled, high stress situations. I’ll ask her more about where she worked and what that life was like. I know that Rosie went through a period of feeling burnt out and lost so I’m hoping she’ll be kind enough to share what that experience was like for her and how she navigated her way out of those feelings to maintain a focus on her goal of helping others. Rosie also runs teacher training and has hosting breathing and relaxation meditation sessions online so I’ll find out more about this and how she has managed her business through the pandemic as well as what things look like for her going forwards. I really hope you enjoy listening to my conversation with Rosie… Rosie shared her favourite Savasana Sound and it was The Devi Prayer, but we’ve had that before (it was bound to happen) so she also suggested listening to the theme from the film Gladiator…I’m definitely giving that one a go. This week I’m talking to Melissa Campbell. Melissa is based in and around Luton offering classes that fuse together mindful movement influenced by yoga, somatics, and qigong. She also teaches mudra-based meditation, mindfulness, self-care journaling, and culinary nutrition offering her clients a holistic approach for self-care and women’s wellness. Melissa, like many of us, has taken this period of enforced slowing down to take stock and focus on what she wants her business to look like going forward. So, we’ll be talking about that as well as how she has been getting on teaching online and what she’s been doing with the extra time she has had on her hands since reducing her teaching hours. Like many of us, Melissa had previously taught yoga at gyms, studios and community halls but as the work dried up she consolidated and focused on retaining her regular client base through online classes and membership offerings. As restrictions are starting to ease, we’ll consider what the next couple of months might look like and how we can help more people to enjoy yoga. I also want to take some time to discuss whether Melissa has experienced any racism, either as a student or a teacher and what her thoughts are regarding diversity in yoga. I know I say this about all of my guests (or at least if I don’t say it out loud I think it!), Melissa is a very kind soul and a good friend. I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Melissa’s shared a few of her favourite Savasana Sounds: Benjy Wertheimer - Saraswati Ma East Forest (artist) Garth Stevenson (also recommended by Christine Blair (Episode 6) Beautiful Charm - Faith Hymn Have a listen to them and see what you think! This week I’m talking to Sophie Rey. Sophie is a Birmingham based yoga teacher and illustrator balancing teaching yoga with creating beautiful pieces of art. She especially loves children’s illustration and is really passionate about sharing and creating art for people, as well as helping them to find their own creative expression. I’ll ask Sophie how she does this, (even in the most creatively challenged of folk!) as well as what she gets from her art in terms of the creative output gives her. She’s also run yoga Nidra and art workshops, blending two of her skillsets together for her clients so we’ll find out if a yoga Nidra session improves people’s art output (or not!). I also ask Sophie what led her to her first yoga class and then into teaching - she qualified in March 2018 - and what she did before becoming a yoga teacher. She’s currently teaching online too - a range of classes from slower paced hatha and Nidra to stronger vinyasa classes. At the moment she’s mixing her own zoom classes with working online for three local studios so we’ll find out how that is working for her and whether she feels it’s a good balance. She’s qualified to teach kids yoga as well and is also a facial massage therapist so I’ll talk to her a bit more about that too. With restrictions starting to lift and light at the end of the tunnel, I’ll find out what Sophie is planning for the future as she prepares to spend more time on the illustration and art side of her business in the coming months. I really hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Sophie’s Savasana Sound is called Eyes Closed and Travelling so have a listen to that and see what you think! This week I’m talking to Kevin Flee - @diaryofachubbyyogi. Kevin is a yoga teacher based in south east London and as his social handles suggest (I think there’s a love handle joke in there somewhere), Kevin is a larger chap, who is intent on promoting yoga for every body…that is, every one with a body! Like a few of my other guests Kevin found yoga through being introduced to it by his sports coach as a complimentary practice and then got more into it following an injury which took him out of sports completely so we’ll hear more about what happened and I’ll also ask about his upbringing and childhood in South Africa. After coming over to the UK following a period as a musician in a rock band, Kevin’s lifestyle had deteriorated, he was doing zero exercise and was worried about his health…we’ll find out what led him here to the UK as well as back onto his mat and what that experience was like. He’s said that going to public classes was like a hell for him as it was full of yummy mummies and as an overweight, tattooed bloke, sweating and out of breath, he felt he didn’t belong. But (thankfully) he stuck with it. Not only that, but Kevin embarked on yoga TT and teaches - so we’re going to hear more about this journey, what he thinks about being a more relatable teacher and he hopes to inspire more men like him onto the mat. I’m really excited to learn more about Kevin and was so pleased he agreed to let me interview him for That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it!
Kevin's Savasana Sound is by Erik Satie and is called Gymnopedies - #1 is his favourite one so have a little listen. Listeners, you can contact Kevin through social media - just look for @diaryofachubbyyogi or google it and you’ll find him. This week I’m talking to Anja Torikka. Anja is a Finnish yoga teacher and a creative who now lives in the heart of the welsh countryside. Her businesses are Anja Yoga and Blue Van Lady so as well as teaching yoga, Anja can be found creating things like beautiful journals, pretty eye pillows and fairies…yes, fairies! Growing up in Finland, Anja was always fascinated by spirits in the forests so we’re going to find out more about this during the podcast, as well as how her love of crafting developed. I’m hoping she can also explain what the Scandinavian word Hygge actually means! Anja is also passionate about sustainability so I’ll ask her about how she weaves this into her creative business. Going back to yoga, Anja, like many of us, has made the move to teaching yoga online so we’ll find out how that is going, especially since she usually loves to teach yoga in the outdoors! Anja is also hoping to run a couple of retreats this summer to so we’ll talk about how it’s been planning those events in the midst of what we are facing right now. As well as yoga, Anja teaches Qigong so we’ll find out that that is and I’m also interested to know what brought her to the UK from Finland. When I’ve met Finnish people in my previous career they have been generally pretty quiet people…even my Finnish opposite number at my old work didn’t talk much and he joked that he was known as a chatterbox! So I’m going to explore what the typical Finn is like with Anja, what it’s like to live in a different country, what she does (and doesn’t) miss from her native Finland and whether she has any plans to return in the future. I’m delighted to welcome Anja Torikka to That Yoga Woman’s Podcast - I very much hope you like listening to our conversation. Listeners, you an contact Anja through her email address: hello@anjayoga.co.uk and check out her new website at www.anjayoga.co.uk. This week I’m talking to Fredee Sardais. Fredee is the founder of Yogi Fredee, is based in Marlow in Buckinghamshire and has been teaching yoga for nearly 20 years. In 2000 she travelled to Australia to complete a 500 Yoga Alliance course and would describe her style as classical Hatha yoga. Fredee went on to study pregnancy and post-natal yoga as well as yoga therapy. In 2012 and 2013 she studied with Matthew Sanford (founder of Mind Body Solutions) to learn to teach adaptive yoga. I’m going to let Fredee explain more about what that is during the podcast but essentially adaptive yoga classes are for people living with mobility disabilities, such as but not limited to partial paralysis, amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or visual impairment. On her return to the UK after her first training she set up the first adaptive yoga classes in the country and started offering one to one sessions for different conditions (such as Multiple Sclerosis, cancer, Cerebral Palsy, fybromalgia). Often very moving and inspirational, Fredee will talk to us about her experiences during those sessions and the impact of yoga on some of her clients. In 2018 she returned to the US to study adaptive yoga again - this time training to teach yoga teachers adaptive yoga across the UK and Europe, as this training programme had previously only been available in the US. In collaboration with one of her students and other trainees of Mathew Sandford, Fredee has set up Adaptive Yoga UK with the aim of establishing and running Adaptive Yoga classes and to support the training of Adaptive Yoga teachers and class assistants in the UK and Europe. So, we’ll find out how all of that is going. Like all of us Fredee is passionate about sharing yoga with everyone and she’s found it an invaluable tool for her own self care and stability so we’ll be talking more about this and how she has used yoga in her different life stages, from during pregnancy to early menopause. I’m so pleased to introduce Fredee Sardais to That Yoga Woman’s Podcast. It’s a longer episode but I just loved having this open and honest conversation with Fredee - I couldn’t bear to cut any of it out. So here it is and I hope you enjoy listening. Her Savasana Sound is the artist Karunesh from the album Heart Meditation Charka 2 - Coming Home and it’s track Here and Now. Listeners, you an contact Fredee through her email address: fs@yogifredee.com and her Facebook is YogiFredee Please let her know what you thought of the podcast and if you’ve got any questions for her I’m sure she’ll answer them for you. This week I’m talking to Amanda Bunton. Amanda is owner of Wild and Free Adventures, a surf and yoga retreat company which runs a variety of yoga based retreats in the UK and abroad. She’s now based in Devon, so on the doorstep of some of the UK’s best surfing, but that certainly wasn’t always the case. In fact, until 2 years ago, Amanda was 5 hours travel from her nearest seaside! We’ll find out what spurred Amanda to make some serious changes in her life. Amanda has been teaching yoga for 2 years, but has been practicing yoga for about 20 years and teaches primarily vinyasa and yin yoga. Amanda left her corporate career a couple of years ago with one of the UK’s biggest retailers, where she was a Studio Operations Manager. We’ll find out how the creative flair and experience of managing photo shoots and in production has helped her to brand her business and develop her market presence. Her retreats have been featured by Women’s Health UK (Best Yoga Retreat) and The Evening Standard Magazine, Om Magazine and Carve Magazine (surfing mag) so I’ll also be asking Amanda out how she works with the media to gain maximum exposure and increase her client base. As you can imagine, for a yoga teacher who runs multiple retreats per year, 2020 was a kick in the teeth, with Amanda having to postpone 5 retreats and cancel one altogether. She still managed to host some retreats last year though, so I’ll be asking how her 2020 was and what her plans are for 2021. Not just that, but how she manages to plan and then cope with change when restrictions are so fluid. I’m so excited to find out more about Amanda and I was delighted she agreed to be interviewed for my podcast as her insta is the height of cool and fun but there’s also a sharp entrepreneur behind the surf boards and sunsets. Please feel free to contact Amanda to share your thoughts on this Podcast with her. You can also contact her on @wildandfreeadventures Instagram. This week I’m talking to Sarah Holt. Sara is founder of Sarenity Yoga and is based in High Leigh, Lymm and surrounds. She’s been a qualified yoga teacher for 3 years and here’s a little confession…like Emma Manning and Kristina Rhianoff, Sarah and I also did our 200 hour TT together. I haven’t seen her since so I’m keen to catch up with what she’s been doing and how she is managing with being a yoga teacher during this pandemic and lockdown. Like many of us, Sarah has been continuing to teach yoga online as the local venues she’s been teaching at have been closed. Also like many of us, Sarah became a yoga teacher after falling out of love with her previous full time career - she experienced a real burn out and decided to do something about it in a major way and we’ll talk about that in this podcast. As well as being a yoga teacher, Sarah is also a writer and has also worked as a travel writer, so we’ll get her insights on her favourite places and experiences - places we can only dream of going to right now. As well as talking about being a freelance writer, Sarah is also majorly into reading, so I get some cheeky book recommendations from her too (see below). In her personal life, Sarah is engaged to Paul and unfortunately their wedding had to be cancelled last year. They’ve also just moved into a house that they’ve started renovating, so we’ll talk about this as well as batch cooking during lockdown. And another thing…she’s into cold water swimming which I’m getting into (I’ve had my first dip!) so we’ll talk about how she got into this and what it gives her. I also get to find out who on earth Ross Edgley is! Please let Sarah know what you thought of this episode - you can contact her through her Facebook which is Sarenity Yoga. We didn’t get to Savasana Sounds this week but Sarah did recommend 3 good reads for us: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart Support Enjoyed listening? This week I’m talking to Deborah Hill. This is a special podcast as Deborah joins me from the Namkhan Eco Lodge in Luang Prabang in Laos where she is teaching yoga and hosting yoga retreats. (Have a laugh at me pronouncing that one!) Yes, all of this in the middle of a global pandemic! So, how on earth did she (a fellow Midlander) get there, and more to the point…why? Well, if we rewind a bit, Deborah has worked in the fitness industry for over 20 years and has been practicing yoga since 2014. She became an Ashtanga Vinyasa teacher in 2017. I met Deborah during our Yin yoga teacher training a couple of years ago and was really surprised by her journey, even then, when she told me a bit about herself. Deborah used to be work in the UK Prison Service and as such had a very demanding and challenging career (both physically and emotionally). I’ll talk to Deborah about what it was like to work in that environment, as well as how she came across yoga, reconciling that work environment with yoga and then deciding to become a full time teacher and leave her career behind. At the end of 2018 she spent 6 weeks studying yoga in India and then, in the spring of 2019, Deborah decided to rent out her house and go travelling firstly to Thailand (where she completed another 200 hour TT and a further 300 hour TT), then to Malaysia, Indonesia and now Laos - I’ve been following her journey ever since. I’ve often wondered how she managed when the pandemic kicked off being so far from the UK, so we’ll find out what she’s been doing while we’ve been stuck indoors. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Please let Deborah know what you thought of this episode - you can contact Deborah through her Facebook which is Deborah Hill or she all has a page called The Bee Community and her insta is The_Bee Community She recommends Lokah Peace on Earth by Carrie Grossman as her Savasana Sounds, as well as Spark in the Night by Singh Kaur and another by Devi Sukhtam (which I can’t find!) so plenty to have a listen to. This week I’m talking to Emma Manning. Emma is a yoga teacher based in Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey. Immediately after she qualified 3 years ago Em went all out to establish herself as a yoga teacher in her local community. She very quickly found a venue, had started to advertise and set her own classes up, regularly selling out spots. This was quickly followed by securing regular teaching slots at a number of local yoga studios in her area…even teaching at a local Sweaty Betty store. Since then Emma has also trained in Barre and teaches that too. Emma exudes a quiet confidence and she very quickly started to make a living combining yoga teaching with her other new business idea, pet services. In fact, she was so successful at marketing herself that yoga became her main focus and the dog walking had to take a back seat! Well, not quite…a conversation with Emma wouldn’t be complete without mentioning her companion, always at her side, her little dog Bertie. Like many of us, Emma had a career before becoming a yoga teacher…she worked in banking complaints…for 14 years…yes! Can you imagine? Dealing with angry people for that long? Well you don’t have to as we’re going to discuss this during the podcast. Emma and I did our TT together so for those 200 hours a few years ago I got to know Emma pretty well but I’d like to know more about what led her to yoga as well as what she’s been doing since, so I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Please let Emma know what you thought of this episode - you can contact her through her insta -it’s @Zen_with_Em She recommends Gavin Luke as her Savasana Sounds - beautiful piano tracks - so check the artist out and see what you think. This week I’m talking to Jamie Tyler. Yes, I’m welcoming our first male yoga teacher to the podcast! Jamie teaches different styles of yoga (hot, hatha, vinyasa, rocket and wheel to name a few!) at a number of yoga studios across Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire and lives in a village with his wife, his little girl and baby boy. He’s relatively newly qualified as a yoga teacher (2 years) but had his first taste of yoga 20 years ago when he started to attend classes in London. He was drawn to yoga as a way to stay strong and flexible whilst working as a performer in West End Musicals. Yes, Jamie has appeared in multiple theatre productions (including most recently working with the Royal Shakespeare Company!) so, as with my other guests, we’ll delve into his non-yoga life too and find out what the theatre industry is like. Jamie also took an interesting (read non-traditional) route into theatre roles, gaining experience working on cruise ships (rather than going to drama school) so we’ll also hear about how that side of his career got started. Married to a successful musician, Jamie discusses their approach to co-parenting and having to manage their diaries around work and family commitments to facilitate them both having the career they want. I found my conversation with Jamie fascinating so I really hope you enjoy listening to it. Please let Jamie know what you thought of this episode - you can contact him through his insta -it’s @JamieTylerYoga His two Savasana Sounds tracks are Spiegel Im Spiegel and Nobody Knows Me Like the Piano by Sampha - I think they are both gorgeous so check them out and see what you think. This week I’m talking to Paula Tenwick. Paula is a yoga teacher based in Leicester. She teaches Sun Power, Yin, Hot and Pregnancy yoga as well as pop dance sessions in her community at different local studios as well as at local village halls. Her instagram profile describes her as coffee drinking, gin-loving, swears too much and proof it’s never too late…she’s definitely a character! Paula is a north London girl originally and, like many of my guests, she has come to yoga teaching relatively late in life, after a career which initially started in sales and marketing. She even sold pens to Tony Blair! Over time the corporate world took its toll. (Sound familiar?) Paula needed a fresh start and wanting the challenge of setting up her own business, she then established and ran her own coffee shop. As well as teaching yoga, Paula is now a part time school teacher, again, something that she has qualified for quite recently - she works part time in a school for autistic children and tutors privately too. She is also dealing with the effects of the (dreaded) menopause so we’ll talk more about that - how is is impacting her and her work. In addition,Paula is a crafter, a vegan and a rescuer of furries - she’s got a menagerie including dogs, a cat and hens so we’ll talk about her love of animals too. I just love Paula’s character and I think you can’t help but warm to her personality - I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Please let Paula know what you thought of this episode - you can contact her through her email address: paula.tenwick@gmail.com Her Savasana Sounds are a couple of tracks by Bliss: A Quiet Conversation and Kissing, so check them out and see what you think. This week I’m talking to Lex Balladon. Lex is a professional wakeboarder having been ranked in the top six female wake boarders in the UK for the duration of her competitive career, and was also crowned the Masters National Champion in 2017. She’s a BWSW (British Water Ski and Wakeboard) Level 3 Wakeboard Coach who coaches privately but has also worked with the BWSW, coaching the GB Squad on their Development Camp scheme. In this podcast Lex gives us a real insight into the world of wakeboarding and working with sponsors through social media, videos and photo shoots. I think you’ll be shocked at some of the obstacles Lex has faced in such a male centric sport….I was! Lex is super passionate about getting more women into her sport. She’s a real advocate and for over a decade she has been coaching ladies and girls events around the country creating Wake Daze, which we’ll talk about during the podcast. It’s teaching yoga at one of those events that I first met Lex - we’ll hear how she believes yoga is integral to helping her stay fit and healthy in body and mind. As my first non yoga teacher guest (gasp!), I hope you’ll find it interesting to hear her perspective. This week I’m talking to Eva Paterson.
Eva owns the Choose You yoga studio and wellness hub in Livingston, Scotland and in this podcast episode we kick off talking about Eva’s route into teaching yoga (she qualified first as a children’s yoga teacher, then travelled to India to gain her Sivananda teacher training certificate and then qualified as an IYENGAR teacher in October 2016).
After becoming frustrated about availability of quality space for her own yoga classes, Eva took matters into her own hands. She set up her wellness centre to facilitate her own teaching and to make herself financially self sufficient so we’ll talk about how she has managed to do that.
Then, in January 2019, Eva had a very very serious health scare - so serious that it was nearly game over so Eva will talk us through what happened and how she believes yoga was fundamental in not just her survival, but also her recovery. I met Eva during a yoga teachers retreat (hosted by Dawn Wright from episode 2) and I was so shocked and moved when she told her story - I can’t wait for you to hear it.
Please let Eva know what you thought of this episode - you can contact her email address: evaom.info@gmail.com

This week I’m talking to Indira Das Gupta. Indira has been teaching yoga for 14 years, is a senior yoga teacher and studio owner based in north London. She was born in London to a Polish Mum and an Indian Dad so is of mixed race heritage. She tells us the story of how her parents met (which is such a chance meeting!), what her childhood was like and her experiences of going to a Catholic Grammar school. Prior to establishing her yoga studio in North London, Indira had a successful career in journalism as a news reporter, working for the London Evening Standard. She shares what it was like to work in a newsroom (dispels my myths that it was like working with Clarke Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy), how she managed the fast pace of very tight deadlines and how she coped with being pigeonholed by her bosses early on in her career. She also worked at celebrity magazines like Heat and Closer and was even news editor at lads’ mag Zoo in the nineties…don’t judge…hear what that was like! We discuss the huge competition there is for teachers, especially those who are newly qualified and the prevalence of teacher training programmes. As well as joining in my (new) Quickfire Questions, Indira also talks to me about the challenges she has faced and continues to face as a studio owner during the pandemic and the harsh and heartbreaking reality of having to contemplate closing her studio. Her Savasana Sounds are Todd Norian - Bija: Soothing Music and Mantras and Craig Pruess and Ananda - Devi Prayer Please let Indira know what you thought of this episode - you can contact her through her social media (she is on Facebook and Instagram) and her website is www.nlys.co.uk Support Enjoyed listening? This week I’m talking to Julia Hankins.
Julia is a fellow Brummie and yoga teacher specialising in delivering yoga and wellbeing classes and courses to children, parents and teachers. As well as being a mum of two, Julia’s an ex-primary school teacher so we talk about how she became a teacher, her wide ranging experiences of teaching in different schools, the highs as well as the lows and what, eventually, led her to leave the profession. We chat about her time teaching in Ecuador as well as her other travels across South America where I share my irrational fear of Colombia and (secret) love of a certain TV show. Julia also tells us how she felt going back into schools to teach yoga and wellbeing classes after her career as a teacher had ended years before. Julia shares how she’s coped with homeschooling her kids in lockdown, her super skills in getting children off to bed and the other kinds of support she offers to families and teachers across yoga, meditation and general wellness. We also discuss her love of camping and nature and she answers my Quickfire Questions and gives us her Savasana Sounds (Stanton Lanier - I listened to the track Breathe and it was so beautiful!)

This week I’m talking to Christine Blair. So, brace yourselves, this is a long (and fiesty) one…would you expect anything less? If you know Christine you’ll know she has a strong voice so it’s not surprising we cover a lot of ground in this podcast. Christine, a yoga teacher based in Milton Keynes, talks candidly about finding her true passion and turning it into, not only a job, but a lifestyle, as well as trying to make yoga more accessible to her MK community. Prior to teaching yoga, Christine had a corporate career and was called a ‘risky hire’ by her boss…we find out why. She speaks about her yo-yo weight, her tumultuous relationship with her body and going from absolutely hating any form of exercise to loving it…not just yoga, but her on off love of running - we even talk ultra marathons! We also discuss her beef with the yoga industry and ‘bum sculpting’ leggings as well as what it’s like to live on a houseboat and how she finds outlets for her creativity. She’s authentically honest (we discuss that too) and we talk about how and why she said goodbye to her amazing Mum. I really loved getting to know Christine and I hope you do too.
Her Savasana Sound suggestion for you is any track by Garth Stevenson, but she particularly likes a track called Dawn. Kristina has had such a full career already and in this conversation I think you get a real insight into her life and work - a little peek behind the celebrity personality, famous for her appearances on Strictly Come Dancing. She speaks openly about her childhood in Russia, her love of dancing (as you’d expect!), but also her deep rooted passion for teaching others and of course, her absolute belief in the power of yoga! It’s so interesting to hear how she started out performing and teaching ballroom dancing in Russia and then across the world and how that led to her TV career, raising her profile and making her personal life very public. We also discussed what led her to have a plant based diet, how she has found the transition from living in big cities to the rural Northamptonshire countryside and we even talk about her specialist subject when she appeared on Celebrity Mastermind (yes really!) Kristina shares what it has been like to balance being on a national tour with her own dance show, setting up a family focussed health and wellness business with her ex-England rugby player fiancé, with bringing up their girls. I hope you enjoy listening to us. Please let Kristina know what you thought of this episode - you can email her at info@sooyoga.com and her website is www.sooyoga.com. You can also find her easily on Instagram. Support Enjoyed listening? Then please rate, review and subscribe to the podcast. This week I’m talking to Zoe Rowe. I loved having this conversation with my friend and fellow yoga teacher Zoe. I think she’s taken an unusual route, qualifying as a teacher, working full time at a yoga studio after completing her PhD, then reducing her teaching hours as she embarked on her corporate career. It’s also so interesting to hear about Zoe’s move to London, how she found the competition of teaching in such a crowded and highly competitive space and how she’s helping to support her local community. Her bubbly enthusiasm is infectious. Dawn Wright (from Episode 2 of the podcast) has said I’m a bit like Tigger, so Zoe and I together…well I had a lot of fun interviewing her! She, like every guest, also answers my Quickfire Questions and tells us her Savasana Sounds (A Winged Victory for the Sullen; Requiem For The Static King Part 1…and yes, there is a Part 2!) Listen to the end for a little post-podcast recording update and I’ve mentioned a couple of my favourite Savasana Sounds too! This week I’m talking to Alecs Donovan. I’m really excited to share with you my conversation with Alecs. She is a Swansea born Osprey’s centre and Welsh rugby international and of course, she’s a yoga teacher! I talk to Alecs about her rugby career and the injury that led her to yoga, why she’s established her own style of practice (“Yogability”), her love of coffee and how she’s managing to fit in setting up her second yoga studio around her already crazy busy schedule. She, like every guest, also answers my Quickfire Questions and tells us her Savasana Sounds.
