In this episode, Dr. Joan walks us through the complex layers woven into each of the moments we forgive. She uses a personal experience that challenged her legitimacy as a psychotherapist to teach us about the hidden spiritual nuggets that come forward when we forgive.

She eloquently speaks about our need and desire to belong and our unwillingness to sometimes claim the rights and privileges that come with belonging to a spiritual and natural family. She connects this teaching to Romans 8: 14-17.

Get ready for another deep dive.

When we forgive we move through a 7-step process that requires that we become a detective … so imagine yourself as Sherlock Holmes with his magnifying glass and a big huge flashlight. The process requires that we first notice those things connected to the five senses. Then we notice and then discern spiritual things.

I watched the video of George Floyd's murder and all the characters of my dream The Dark Night showed up live and in person. Derek Chauvin became the basement dweller; the three other cops, the people present, and the now the whole world became the on-lookers; the president, senators, mayors, and civil servants who deny the presence of a broken and dangerous basement dweller represents the homeowner. The media and various institutions that support and work hard to sell us stories that maintain the oppressive system are the people I call realtors. The house is God’s creation - Earth and humanity. In the basement of this house are the lost parts of ourselves, the soul lovers, and fear-filled parts of ourselves: The runners, screamers, and freezers. Christ is here now, to tell us when and where we died and how to get up and find our way back.
