Immediately prior to joining the department, Secretary Lilley served as the Director of Economic & Pandemic Recovery for Governor Roy Cooper. In that position, he coordinated statewide pandemic recovery efforts, served as State Infrastructure Coordinator, and led economic development initiatives for the Cooper Administration. Lee also advised Cooper Administration leadership on strategy and communications.

Originally from Allentown, PA, Scott graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, SC in May 1977. He also earned a Masters in International Affairs Degree from Columbia University in New York, NY in 1988. Prior to joining the NCMBC in 2004, Scott served six years as the Chief Officer for Support Services for the City of Fayetteville. In this capacity, he directed Human Resources and had management responsibility for other departments, including Risk Management and Information Technology.
An entity of the State embedded in our community colleges (with 17 offices statewide), the NCMBC is a unique business development and technology transition organization that grows the defense economy by expanding federal contracting and supporting retention of transitioning military personnel and recruitment of defense contractors to North Carolina.

Today's episode features an interview with Leigh Altman, a Mecklenburg County commissioner who is chair of the Metropolitan Transit Commission. The group is leading efforts for a $25 billion expansion of the Charlotte area's transportation system, including new light rail, expanded roads and improved bus service. It would be the biggest public works project in state history. Altman discusses efforts for a 1 cent sales tax that requires approval from state lawmakers and a public referendum. She was a lawyer in the Georgia governor's office before moving to North Carolina in 2009, and has worked at Charlotte's Council for Children's Rights. She was elected to the commission in 2020.

He discussed the booming housing market in the region, where the market is going, and what it means for the regional economy. Schulmeyer has served for nearly three decades in the homebuilding industry, including five years as M/I’s division president. He’s a graduate of the University of Virginia with a B.S. in commerce, accounting and finance. M/I Homes completed 450 homes and townhomes in the Charlotte area in 2023, with another 500 expected to be completed this year. The company anticipates closing 600 homes in the region in 2025.

Center-city private clubs are reinventing themselves as many executives spend fewer days at the office. He has led the enterprise since last September after previous stops at clubs in Florida and North Carolina. For about 12 years, he worked for McConnell Golf at its clubs in Raleigh and Greensboro. Before coming to Charlotte, he was GM at San Jose Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jed Routh is the vice president of markets and products at Kempower, which recently opened its state-of-the-art EV charger manufacturing facility in Durham. Kempower’s growth strategy aims to position the company among the global top five in the DC charging market by 2030. Kempower’s production site in Durham is one of the four factories Kempower operates globally. Kempower’s three European factories are located in Lahti, Finland. The Kempower Durham facility will create approximately 300 jobs It's estimated to add over $700 million to North Carolina’s economy in the next decade. Routh previously was director of business development at eTransEnergy. He also was a vice president at Thomas Built Buses/Daimler Trucks North America in High Point.

John Loyack is the Vice President of Economic Development for the North Carolina Community College System. In this role, Loyack leads the operation of the Economic Development Division, which includes ApprenticeshipNC, BioNetwork, Customized Training, and the Small Business Center Network. The Economic Development team provides education, training, and support services for new, expanding, and existing business and industry in all 100 North Carolina counties through our network of 58 community colleges. Before joining the System, Loyack worked for the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the North Carolina Department of Commerce as well as with companies like MercuryMD, Thomson Reuters, Time Warner, and Esteve Laboratories. Loyack earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Spanish from Gettysburg College and holds an MBA in International Business Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. In addition, to being Chair of the Board of Go Global NC, he also is a member of the NC Apprenticeship Council and the NC MEP Advisory Board.

Jason Dibble is the co-founder of Boomerang Water, which is based in Midland, outside of Charlotte.The company is dedicated to the elimination of single use plastic water bottles from all major campuses such as resorts, hotels, cruise ships, corporations and college campuses, military bases, and entire towns. The company has seen a 10-fold increase in revenue in the past year and has clients such as a Four Seasons Hotel and The Boca Raton. Dibble served four tours in Afghanistan and Iraq planning and executing seven military operations.

David Klanecky is president and CEO of Charlotte-based Cirba Solutions, one of the largest battery recyclers in the world. Klanecky previously served as executive vice president and COO of Piedmont Lithium, where he helped build North America’s largest Lithium company. From 2013 to 2021, David served in increasingly senior management roles within Albemarle Corp., the world’s leading lithium producer, including as vice president of strategy and corporate development and as vice president of lithium operations (APAC/EU), with global responsibility for Albemarle’s manufacturing/operations, process technology and product management within the global lithium business. He also served as interim CEO of the MARBL joint venture between Albemarle and Mineral Resources Ltd, which includes the Kemerton and Wodgina assets in Australia.

Later, he became a distributor for Istanbul-based rug manufacturer Merinos. He grew so successful that he purchased the vacant Burlington Mill in Mooresville and restored it. Once covered in graffiti, with dozens of holes in the roof, the mill today is thriving with offices, retail and restaurants. The N.C. chapter of the American Planning Association honored the mill with its 2017 “Great Transformation” Award.

Amgad Saad started in the family business in 1982 while in high school. He joined full-time in 1988 from ECU. His father Mones Saad started the business as a TV and electronics repair business. It now has three locations, 31 employees, and 1,000 deliveries/month. Amgad’s sister is co-owner/treasurer Rita Hines. Her two sons work in the warehouse, as does Amgad’s son, Simon.

She also was co-founder and academic director of the Institute for Business in Society. In that role she led the development of the P3 Impact Award, which recognizes leading cross-sector collaboration to improve communities around the world, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Partnerships and Concordia. Her passion for cross-sector collaboration also led her to establish the Tri-Sector Leadership Fellows program, which brings together graduate students from business, law and public policy.

Jessica Holmes' mother worked in a meatpacking plant, initially earning $7.25 an hour as she raised five children. Now, the Raleigh lawyer is running for Labor Commissioner, where she would be involved in enforcing safe working conditions in the state's business, including pork and poultry production factories. Holmes grew up near Burgaw in Pender County, then earned bachelor's and law degrees at UNC Chapel Hill. She was elected to the Wake County Commission in 2014 at age 29, the youngest person elected to the board in the state's biggest county.
