Independence is a word most do not give much thought to on a daily basis. We take it for granted for the most part. On further inspection, it seemed to us that Independence can have many meanings to different people. While one may believe it is patriotic, others may find it goes much deeper.

Richard Post welcomes us to the old neighborhood where everyone knew almost everything about everybody. Where all got along or learned to tolerate each other; you had to living in a three flat, cold water, walk up. The house may not have been much to look but it was a place called home.
Richard S. Post earned his BA and MA degrees from Michigan State University and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He interned for the Chicago Police Department, worked as a clandestine services operations officer for the CIA and a university professor before becoming an international business consultant.
Post credits his childhood on the streets of Chicago for building the foundation for his life in protecting people and secrets around the world. Now, instead of solving problems, he writes about the most exciting and interesting ones.
Introducing HOSTS, the forthright pseudonym of Miles Patzer. The Nashville-based Milwaukee transplant is a singer/songwriter capable of evoking levels of emotion through his bare-bone sets that leave his listeners in an unfathomable state of introspection.

Ben Bradlee Jr. is the author of the NY Times best-selling biography The Kid: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams, published by Little Brown December 2013. He spent 25 years with The Boston Globe, 10 years as a reporter and 15 as editor.
As a reporter he served on the Spotlight Team at the State House bureau and as the paper’s roving national correspondent. He covered the 1988 presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis and also reported overseas for The Globe. Bradlee has written three previous books, The Ambush Murders, the case of a black activist accused and ultimately acquitted after three trials of killing two white policemen, Prophet of Blood, the story of polygamous cult leader Ervil LeBaron and Guts and Glory: The Rise and Fall of Oliver North.
A graduate of Colby College, Bradlee served in the Peace Corps in Afghanistan. On his return to the United States he went to work as a reporter for the Riverside Press-Enterprise, remaining there until mid 1975. Bradlee has three children. He and his wife Janice live outside Boston.
Lazarus is a true world fusion onto himself. Ever since this Greek-Mauritian Australian born young man picked up his first drumstick at age eleven, he has never looked back. With roots in heavy metal, rock and Mauritian Sega, along with stage, classical and world music influences, Lazarus has released ‘Medusa’ a single from his upcoming solo album Paid My Dues.
For years Lazarus has played with numerous cover, original metal, rock and reggae bands, recently playing double bass with Guy Sebastian on his latest video ‘Gold’. Medusa is a far cry from his heavy metal roots, encasing funky rock, a taste of Hendrix and many world music influences. From composing, instrumentals, vocals to engineering and mixing of the final production, this is truly a solo effort of Lazarus’s new fusion sound.
Dave Edlund is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a doctoral degree in chemistry. A leading expert in hydrogen energy, he is an inventor on more than 90 US Patents and more than 120 foreign patents. He has published more than 100 technical articles and presentations, and has been an invited author of several technical books on alternative energy.
He has dedicated his professional career to developing new technology to support the hydrogen economy. Thea Lilu is a contemporary writer, producer, arranger and vocalist. Born in Caracas, Venezuela she later moved to Slovenia and now resides in the US.
Her love for music and performing began as a young child when at the age of eight she began composing her own music. Thea performed Opera, Nessun Dorma, at the age of 13 in a school play and at the age of 14 recorded her first CD, Dreams Come True and later, Say His Name. Thea was accepted at the Berlee College of Music in Boston and moved to the US.

Robert Scanlan was born in Chicago and completed his MBA at USC in Los Angeles, where he resided for forty-seven years, until recently moving to Phoenix.
He is the recipient of two liver and one kidney transplant. Following his recovery, Bob returned to school to become a life coach. He has spoken to civic groups,nursing colleges & hospital nurses as part of their continuing education program and the general public on the experience of being a transplant recipient and the need for organ donors. He is a volunteer ambassador for Donate Life both in California and now in Arizona.
His memoir Tigers Under My Bed, Life Lessons Tamed During Three Organ Transplants is an inspiration and learning tool for transplant patients, their families amd those undergoing life-changing trauma.
Stays In Vegas is an Alternative/Indie Rock band from Little Rock, AR. Their sound resembles a mixture of Nirvana meets Kings of Leon with a twist of Pearl Jam and a dash of Silverchair. Their first album, Faces For The Moment, is a 10 song LP that ranges from gritty rock, eerie alt rock and acoustic ballads.
Stays In Vegas began in 2011 as a cover band focusing on Alternative Rock songs from the 90’s to now. With a few lineup changes, they decided in 2013 to focus on original material and began production of their first album towards the end of the year. Tony Holiday is a rising figure in the blues harmonica world! Touring 8 months a year he plays the semi pro circuits. Tony has played with many of blues great. He is friends with Lazy Lester and Guitar Shorty, who is recording Tony's song Weep and Moan. With mentors like Adam Gussow, Brandon Santini, Rod Piazza and Ronnie Shellist, Tony has come a very long way in just 3 years on the harmonica. For this interview he will be on West Coast tour with one variation of his Velvetones.
Even though the musician has a tattoo of a harmonica on his forearm as well as the words “True Blue” on his fingers, he doesn’t classify himself as a strict Chicago-style bluesman. Holiday can be seen on local stages most weekends with multiple bands, including honky-tonk outfit Smoke in the Tavern and ’50s-country-influenced Antique Cadillac, and his main band, The Velvetones, to which he contributes smoky lead vocals, harmonica, guitar and original compositions.
At the prompting of Bad Brad Wheeler, Holiday founded the Utah Blues Society six months ago with the help of KRCL’s Brian Kelm, host of the Monday night, Red, White & Blues program. Brian was recently appointed as the society’s president.
In addition to keeping busy with the Utah Blues Society, Holiday is soon to release two new albums with the Velvetones, a live album called Live at Fats Grill, which released this month and a studio full-length titled Happy to Have the Blues, which will be out in June. Holiday says Happy to Have the Blues will have a funky and heavy-blues feel, and is “just all about harmonica.”

Sonia Eden is a Singer/Songwriter from Barbados who delights in crafting her own experience of Island Soul and Smooth Jazz. Within a week of the release of her debut EP “Pieces of Me” instant requests were received from DJ’s in Australia for regular rotation on their radio playlist.

Andy Pickford’s musical associations began at the age of four emulating tunes on his grandmother’s piano. Hearing synthesizer music fired Andy’s imagination. In 1981, Andy got his first monophonic synthesizer. Coupled up with a cassette deck and a reel-to-reel, Andy started composing synth music. Around 1983, Andy set about recording a cassette album called Linear Functions under the name of Kris McKuen.
In 1992 a demo of Andy’s work was sent to Ashley Franklin at BBC Radio Derby where he got his first break on the now legendary ‘Soundscapes’ programme. Early 1993, Replicant began. This album, dedicated to the artist Ian Mullis who was responsible for the original Linear Functions album sleeve,
Andy has collaborated with the likes of Ian Boddy, Asana and Paul Nagle under the pseudonym Binar and Spank, The Dark Monkey. He has now decided to throw himself back into his music again with re-mastered album material, plus re-releases of both Xenomorph and Nemesis.
Opera singer, Grammy Winner and Author, Jay Hunter Morris came into the national spotlight when he created the role of Tony in Terrence McNally’s celebrated play Master Class In a career spanning twenty-five years, some of his favourite Operatic roles have included Rodolfo, Alfredo, Pinkerton, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Des Grieux, Canio, Stolzing, Erik, Bacchus, Florestan, Don Jose, Steva, and Samson.
Morris has most recently been seen on PBS as a very different kind of hero in the role of Captain Ahab in Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick from the San Francisco Opera. A contemporary opera veteran of great renown, Morris has been heard in several world premiere productions He will create the role of Teague in Cold Mountain (Higdon) which premieres with a major US Festival in 2015.

Meet Simona Barbieri Mckenzie. This little Scottish-born songwriting top liner, art director and music therapist has been singing and arranging music since childhood. Although she also speaks English, Italian, Spanish, French and Norwegian her mother-tongue language is Music. Simona’s constant research for music development brought her to Oslo, where she attended university while working and composing new songs with local artists, inspired by the unique northern lights and stunning landscapes.
Over the last few years, this multi-talented artist has been working with a variety of producers and recording studios, creating and performing TV and radio advertising jingles, movie soundtracks and pop/dance/trance/hip hop songs. She has recently appeared in the famous Italian Rapper Fabri Fibra’s album Controcultura, featuring the track “In alto”.
Ariel Levy started in the film industry working as a 2nd Assistant Director on Charlie Chaplin’s COUNTESS FROM HONG. At 23, he became the youngest 1st Assistant Director in the history of the UK film industry. He became a production manager at BBC television then returned to feature films as line producer on Frank Schaffner’s SPHINX, Herbert Ross’s NIJINSKI, Wolfgang Peterson’s ENEMY MINE, and Home Box Office’s THE FAR PAVILIONS.
In 1989 he became worldwide Head of Production for Hughes Entertainment, supervising the first HOME ALONE, and preparing the original BEETHOVEN movie.
This was followed by MR. BASEBALL, THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, SPY GAME and MILLION DOLLAR BABY. In 2002, Ariel was invited to teach at the Los Angeles Film School by the founding dean, and was subsequently asked to become head of production.
In addition, Ariel continues to develop projects, both as feature films as well as serialized concepts geared towards television or the web.
Bronx born, single parent raised and Blessed with a God Given super-talent and drive,singer-songwriter Rasheeda Wallace had no other choice but to soar to the top of her game. She knew she had big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of hip hop Bronx- Made legends such as Kurtis Blow & Kool Herc, whom she had worked with earlier in her career.
Rasheeda began singing at age two and recalls her mother, who performed at the prestigious NYC Cotton Club as well as Vegas, being her earliest musical influence. Now the tables have turned. T.R. Heinan was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota and developed his love for history during his five years at Marquette University. After a brief stint as a journalist in MA, Heinan began a career in investment banking specializing in the airline and motion picture industries. His retirement years have been devoted to writing and serving homeless children at a Mexican orphanage he helped to establish. L'Immortalitè is his first book-length work of historical fiction. He is an avid traveler and was inspired to write about Delphine Lalaurie during one of his many visits to New Orleans, Louisiana. Heinan now resides in Tucson, Arizona with his wife and two cats.

J.M. Harrison is a 1987 graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma. Since then, he's worked in the family business at the Oklahoma National Stockyards and various positions in retail. Along the way, he's operated a church library for nearly thirty years and been a triple medical pioneer. John Cee Stannard is best known as founder member of Tudor Lodge, part of the vibrant folk movement of the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s which included bands such as Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. The first album, Tudor Lodge, released on Vertigo in 1971 enjoys a cult status and is highly collectable.
John Cee has remained in the music business, song-writing, performing and recording with Tudor Lodge. In 2011 John Cee’s song-writing took him in a completely different direction. Within a few months there was more than enough material for an album. John was able to obtain his dream and produced The Doob Doo album. He put together a trio in which he is supported by Make Baker, on guitar and Howard Birchmore, on harmonica, both of whom were featured on the album. After the demise of LA rock group Curious Primate, Jonathan Huffman and fellow CP bandmate Matthew Swartz decided to go in a new direction. Jon wanted to start a project with strong roots in jazz and funk, the emphasis being on guitar work and layering. Meanwhile, Matt had been passionate about developing a project that was more synth and beat based. The two decided to team up to make their visions a reality. Matt's project became SexBeef a dub fueled progrock experiment, and Jon's ideas became Pink Octopus. Each took leadership roles in their projects but were integral in the others project as well with Jon providing the guitar work for SexBeef and Matt the vocals and keys for Pink Octopus.
In 2012 Jon left LA and took Pink Octopus to Seattle, WA in order to breath new life into the project. After several months of hard work and jamming the newly renovated and twice as powerful Pink Octopus is alive and well in the Pacific Northwest. Jon and Ian are now joined by Detroit Saxophone legend Michael Porenta and the Bass badger of Bellingham, Luke Wyman.

Vernon Fuller on guitar and vocals started out playing with reggae and funk bands in London, performing upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. Vernon has also played at Birmingham Jazz Festival with the Bean Machine. He has played regularly in several bands; Afro Blue, Twin Frets, So What Now, Funkus Monkus, T-razz and as a solo artist, most notably was a featured artist for Jazz FM.
Vernon loves to deliver a heady cocktail of smooth jazz with a hard edge and has released several albums to date, mostly cover versions of songs. His most recent venture is a CD and digital release, in 2013 of “What Will You Do?” which is an album of completely self-penned songs ranging from Latin Funk to Reggae to Jazz to Soul.
Joseph Sutton went to the University of Oregon in 1960 on a football scholarship. It was at college that he decided he was going to be a writer. After graduating with degrees in philosophy and history he joined the Coast Guard Reserve. After completing six months of active duty Sutton earned a secondary teaching credential at Cal State Los Angeles. Five years later, he quit the teaching profession to follow his dream of becoming a writer.
In 1977 Sutton moved to San Francisco and within four years met Joan Branstein, married her and they had a son Raymond. His latest release is The Years the Giants Won the Series. According to Barry Gifford author of Wild at Heart, Sutton’s writing is in the tradition of Pulitzer Prize winning author William Saroyan. Two National Book Award winners have also endorsed his work. He was recently a featured speaker at A Baseball Salon: Memories of the Game, inspired by America’s favorite pastime and emceed by sports radio host Marty Lurie. His next book will focus on how he lost 50 pounds and learned how to maintain that weight-loss.

Ed Thomas,born in New Orleans but raised in Joliet, IL, began playing the clarinet and piano at the age of five and took up the sax six months later. Ed was influenced by Benny Goodman but a close family friend (James Grays) was an incredible talent and had a huge impact on Ed's playing.
Ed served in the Marine Corps at which time he conducted and arranged music for the Marine Corps Band. He holds a M.A. in Applied Music from Oberlin College. Ed has an enormous list of recording and performance credits such as Ike and Tina Turner, Lloyd Price, Johnny Thunder, Howard Blank (The Outsiders), Joe Witkin (Sha-Na-Na), James Gurley (Big Brother and The Holding Company), Doc Severenson, Carmen Dragon (conductor for the L. A. Symphony) and performed in a large stage production of the Buddy Holly story.
In 1969 while in Vietnam, Bill Chamberlain started his time in radio. His first gig in the States was at KSUE in Susanville, CA. Bill worked up and down the state of CA finally spending time in Roswell NM and Elko, NV. Thirty-seven years later Bill retired from radio. While in Ventura, Chamberlain met Don Sinclair at KACY, later forming Stage Three Productions. They received thirty-five Creative Advertising Awards from major advertising agency Directors in L,A. Massimo Marino worked for many years at CERN, an international lab for particle physics research near Geneva, Switzerland and then in the US at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. In 2005 he moved to the private sector, worked with Apple Inc. and then for the World Economic Forum.
As a child, he wrote short stories and novellas but never had anyone read them; it was a personal thing. Work and life took their toll and the writing stopped. Looking back at early childhood Jeremiah recalls his father playing old country and bluegrass on a 5-string banjo while they both sang into the early morning hours. Jeremiah attributes his passion for music to his father, who instilled a strong rooted love and respect for classic artists such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, & Waylon Jennings. Another early musical influence was Jeremiah’s late grandmother. She played popular and secular music on the keyboard throughout the 1950’s to mid 1980’s in the Lehigh Valley, PA area. Jeremiah spends much of his time on the road with his band or in Nashville, TN where he is currently working on numerous projects. He enjoys writing and performing songs that connect with his audience, the soulful aspect of making music with his friends, and being an entertainer. Anthony Flacco is an author of five nonfiction books and three historical novels, all released by major publishers. He holds an MFA in screenwriting from the American Film Institute. He was selected for the Walt Disney Studios Screenwriting Fellowship and spent a year writing for the Touchstone Pictures division. Skylar Kaylyn is 16 years old and was born in Mission Viejo, CA, spending most of her life growing up in a small town in Wyoming. Hailing from the city of Kingston with a Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management, Dax Lion was infused with the rich musical roots of Jamaica from a young age. He began to collaborate with artists such as Biggz General and Elise Dash. Currently, Dax is performing in the United States and Jamaica and is working on an upcoming album. Early in his career, Charles Watts had an underground play “Visigoths” produced in Los Angeles which led to script writing contracts for several TV series, including “Kojack” and “Here Come the Brides.” He fled Hollywood, got an MFA in poetry and went to Iran to teach literature at several Universities. For five years, he edited Seizure, a magazine of poetry and fiction. He has also been a cab driver, social worker on Skid Row in Los Angeles, refugee worker in camps in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Costa Rica, and owner of a tour company. His poems and stories have been anthologized in “Road Poets” and “Karma in the High Peaks,” which won the “People’s Choice Award” for best book of 2010 from the Adirondack Center for Writing. His poems won first place at the North Country Writers Festival in 2009 and 2012. His most recent publication is a collection of short stories, “Raptures,” published by Ra Press in September, 2012. “Raptures” has been nominated for the fiction award, 2013, by the Adirondack Center for Writing. He will tell us of his work with the seed bank, which is an attempt to collect seeds from native plants, especially those which were utilized by Native Americans for food before the Europeans arrived. The goal is to distribute these seeds for planting in part to all those who want them, but especially to Native Americans who can grow them on reservation lands where they are free to do so without interference from agribusiness. Charles is also involved in dealing with the threat and results of Agent Orange, which was sprayed by the U.S.. government on the San Carlos Reservation in the 1950s in order to facilitate water flow for the Gila River area and its agriculture. That's a topic that should and will upset us all. Freddie Bitsoie is an anthropologist and chef specializing in integrating the foods of Native Americans into modern cuisine. This means the food of all parts of North America, be it the shellfish of the Chesapeake Bay, the rabbits of the prairies, bison, elk, or salmon from the Northwest. Back Channel is the first book of a remarkable memoir of a Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy. Known familiarly as Bertie Mac he reported directly to the President and his office was in the West Wing of the White House. Prior to achieving that position, he had been betrayed by his own government - the United States - and handed over to the Soviets. Glenn Oliver Parkhurst, author of Bled Out, takes his audience on another gripping tale with the release of 'The Ulasiga'. He has used the mountains of Salt Lake City as the setting for this tale. In 1981, Jack Henry Abbott, a con with a history of burglaries and a murder while incarcerated walked out of prison a free man thanks to the efforts of the author Norman Mailer. Upon release, Abbott murdered Richard Adan who was working as a waiter at a restaurant over Abbott's request to use the washroom.In 1998, Gary Goldstein, a habitual abuser of narcotics and alcohol, held up a string of dry cleaning establishments in Manhattan. Under the influence he used a toy gun and in this inebriated presence of mind, confessed to the cops who promised him leniency if he cooperated without the presence of a lawyer. Unfortunately, Goldstein wasn't seen as meshuganah high on pills and alcohol, but rather as a danger to society and was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Gary born in 1961 in Brooklyn, New York, obtained a BA in Journalism from Long Island University in 1983. He's a selected member of Sigma Delta Chi and Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. Before Gary's conviction, he worked for both CBS News and Sports, and NBC Sports as a journalist and has worked at other media outlets and sports production companies. Ever think about retiring? Yes, so have we. Perhaps we should think about it a bit more. We're joined with author and businessman Phil Saylor, who says it best.... Retire is a word I never liked. The word retire, along with dramatic emphasis, sounds like you’re going to die. Of course, death is inevitable weather we retire or not. Wisdom satisfies the notion that sometimes when you don’t like something it’s just a pure case of tough stuff. In other words, the word retire is here to stay. I can’t do anything about it. I think it’s highly over-rated and for sure over-used. “You’re retired. So does that mean you don’t do anything, or is retired what you do?” When googling retirement, you'll be bombarded with financial stuff and AARP insurance sites. That must mean you have to have money to retire. What a novel idea. Who would have thought? Money is a given. My contention is money is only part of what you need. One day you wake up and it happens to be your 65th birthday..., they stuff a gold watch in your hand, give you a cake, a pat on the back & send you down the elevator with a cardboard box of personal items from your desk, you’ve just retired. My dad grew up in a community in Arkansas that is still reached by driving seven miles on a dirt road off a two-lane blacktop. He attended a one-room schoolhouse that is still standing and joined the military as soon as he was old enough. Every summer, when I was a kid, we drove 500 miles or so to visit the folks. Except for the long drive, it was fun because they lived like old-time cowboys – no electricity, no plumbing, no milk delivery. My mom took a lot of naps, but I helped my grandmother feed chickens and collect eggs, pick just enough vegetables from the garden for dinner (lunch) or supper, and although I stayed away from the cow, I shook cream into butter in a big mason jar. One day, when I was living in Austin, Texas, I asked myself: I wonder if my grandmother ever fell in love with anyone else and decided to write a short story about a love triangle on a farm in Arkansas. That story turned into 300 pages called TOM’S WIFE. The details of buildings, natural landscape and weather are accurately set on my grandparents’ farm. The characters of Annie and Tom Huckaby are composites of people I met in Arkansas with unique characteristics added. Jake’s character is based on reading Stephen Birmingham’s book, OurCrowd, the story explaining how the Jewish banking firms started in NYC by sending their sons into the South as peddlers then loaning out the profits to other immigrating Jews. Alana Cash is an award-winning filmmaker and author. She taught writing classes at the University of Texas Informal Classes in Austin, Texas, and was one of 60 U.S. teachers chosen to be profiled in the PBS series "A Writer's Exchange." Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Marlene moved to the United States at the age of eight. Her love for books began her very first summer in the U.S. when her stepmother literally dragged her to the library;a way to keep her off the streets. Without realizing it Al accepted most of his first 30 years of Life experiences as fact and truth and that is how he functioned and lived for 40+ years. This resulted in having an inflated ego with low self-esteem and constantly seeking instant gratification.
Those three characteristics added up to FEAR.
During that time period Al wondered “Is this how life is supposed to be? Were some of us were here to struggle while others were lucky and had all the breaks?” After an accident that resulted having a severe concussion, Al knew he needed to heal physically and through daily meditations realized he also needed to heal mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
This was the beginning for Al in enhancing his overall wellbeing and in this part of his journey he searched for answers and the truth of others, read as many books as he could, had great mentors, went to seminars, and did everything to keep moving forward in life.

For some it took many years before they were able to reflect upon the meaning of the war as they lived through it. What happened to children across the world during the Second World War, in the years 1930 to 1945, shows a common theme of emotional upheaval, fear and hunger. The author was a child living in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked, and remembers what the war years were like. She has gathered accounts from others to include along with hers. Her latest novel, Brendan Malone: The Last Fenian is her latest novel, exploring early 20th century Irish nationalism.
