Interviews with professionals across all equestrian disciplines, insights into careers all over the equestrian industry and episodes keeping you up to date with best practices for all aspects of horse care.
It's been a while since we've caught up hasn't it. I mean I know you hear a bit about our lives, episode to episode, but there's lots that doesn't get through, and not all of you have listened since we started the podcast. And we started the podcast a bloody long time ago now. Thinking how different our lives are is a bit mad to be honest. As our lives are growing and morphing, we thought the podcast probably needed to too. Logically. So that's what this is. A quick catch up, and the low down.
We are joined by our absolute favourite person, Angela Jones, our very own resident Podcast Pet Vet, to talk all about Atypical Myopathy, what's a myopathy? Why is it not typical? Guess you'll have to listen won't you

We talk all about how keeping ponies in Kenya works, the challenges from the climate (and the wildlife), how competing works and how most people learn to ride. Nandi is current holder of the "Best Answer to What's One Thing You Couldn't Live Without" award

This week, Lucy from Gemini Genetics joins us on the podcast to talk all about cloning, how it works, why you'd do it, and how it's helping in so many areas right now. This was a big episode for our resident Biology Nerd but I think we kept it in check and didn't go too science heavy.... you guys be the judge
Our second episode in our Breed series we're looking at one of the most carefully bred animals in the world, for one singular aim. Getting the fastest horse possible. Listen to Simon Cooper from the original Thoroughbred Studbook, Weatherbys, talk about how the breed came to be and what its future looks like.
You might have heard episodes on mindset before, but none like this. She rides Piglet for Tess and as part of her team, we've seen first hand the optimism, dedication, patience and resilience she approaches every day, every opportunity and every challenge with, and wanted to learn more...
Today, Alex and Tess talk about the benefit of being employed by someone else (Tess) and self employed (Alex) when you've got a horse to worry about, it includes discussing the pros and cons of a non-horsey job compared to being with horses full time and how we make each option work for us.
Did you know that movement in a horse's lower jaw can affect how far the hind leg can come forward and engage? How about knowing that to fix David Beckham's knee trouble, they gave him a plate to put in his mouth? Intrigued yet?
Our very first World Equestrian Games GOLD MEDALIST and one that we were so so excited about. When we started thinking about what other sports we wanted to learn about, Vaulting was top of the list. Who better to learn from than a member of GB Vaulting's Royal Family
We ask our pet vet everything you ever wanted to know that we could think of about Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Signs and Symptoms, Outcomes and Causes. Poo Smoothies and The Dirtiest Joke Tess Has Ever Been Told (probably).
In our new series spotlighting how different breeds of our furry friends came to be, we start with the biggest personalities of them all: Shetlands. Fun fact, the mp3 to this episode is named by their super fun nickname that Alex wouldn't let me say on air
For Coaching Week this week, we're revisiting our FIRST EVER EPISODE, with the incomparable Caroline Moore, from when we were BABIES back in 2019 and very exceptionally new to this whole recording lark. Have we changed? Have we improved? No. But as this episode shows, we were fire from the off.
As this week is National Volunteering Week, we thought we'd give you a quick run down of our own volunteering experience in Riding for the Disabled and British Eventing/Pony Club, what you can gain from it, why we like it and what you can expect. We both absolutely love doing it, listen to find out why. For a handy blog on the subject, go to www.theponypodcast.com

Have you ever wondered whether horses in other countries are looked after the same way as yours? Well we had many many questions about our different perspectives and experiences, so decided to recruit a different viewpoint. The lovely Teal Shoop joins us all the way from Oregon USA to tell us all about keeping horses in the United States and clear up some questions for us. DO horses in Florida grow a winter coat?
In a new series for us, we ask our resident vet, Angela Jones, everything we ever wanted to know about strangles. It includes the phrases "haemorrhaging custard" and "the custard clap". You're welcome.
Everything you guys wanted to know about rider fitness, from how much you need to how best to get it, which doesn't seem like a big range but there are plenty of pit stops along the way. If you're a competing rider, at whatever level, or just trying to make some progress, you NEED to listen to this
Biology Nerds Unite! A whole episode on biosecurity, why it's important (incase the whole pandemic thing wasn't reason enough) and some easy ways to make your horses that little bit safer.
You guys ever heard of Le Trec? Okay well we hadn't, so we got the wonderful GB Le Trec rider and Chef d'Equipe Julia Knight-Jones on to talk to us all about it! What it is, what you do, how to get involved, what you'll need. All the information you could want and as with any good Trec adventure, a couple of tangents
We are joined by lovely lovely Angela Jones for our favourite type of episode - one requested by you lovely lot. We ask Angela everything we could think of about the Vetting process, based in some way on personal experience. Enjoy!
We're on our own again this week to do a little follow up to last week's episode with Riders Minds. We talk a bit about our own experiences, how they've affected us, how we dealt with them and what we learned. As ever if you want to talk to us about anything covered in this episode or outside it our DMs are always open @theponypodcast
This week we speak to Liz Daniels from Riders Minds about mental health within the equestrian industry. Lockdown has been rough for lots of people and with how relentless equestrian sports can be, we talk a bit about why we struggle and more importantly, what help is available to us.
Your two hosts talk about what Fitness looks like in reality, making sure your horse is fit enough, how we've dealt with our horses over lockdown, how we use galloping for more than just getting some speed into the legs and how the way our horses gallop and hold their fitness has changed as they've got older.
Ever wondered how your favourite clothing brands... happen? Well we spoke to Tara from Mochara (it's just fun to say) about starting an equestrian fashion business in her third year of university (and stayed sane), product testing, how she designs and how sometimes the best thing to do is to not know what you want to do. Enjoy!
Have you ever seen an advert for an ambassador programme? Of course you have. Because you don't live under a rock. But have you ever wondered what brands actually GET OUT of them? Or even how you make yourself stand out from the crowd to be selected? Well you're only a play away...
The most highly anticipated of all episodes by those in the know. Life Hacks like: Arena Mirrors for 90p, Feed Storage for free, showjump courses when you're pushed for space?!
As people with notoriously terrible eating habits who've definitely never been known to have chocolate for breakfast, Dominos pizza for lunch and then ice cream for dinner while drinking nothing but coffee... we decided it was high time we spoke to an expert about some common nutrition myths and some tools to use to make sure you're actually getting what you need. And most importantly, how planning your competition season around the food stands available (or Jonno the Coffee Man) is totally acceptable. Enter, Jay Dimery, Nutritionist Extraordinaire
In another listener requested episode, the wonderful Lindsay Gall, Brand Manager at Likit, talks us through how they make likits! From choosing flavours to the production process and what products they're coming out with next. As one of the Podcast's very first supporters this has been something we've wanted to do for SO LONG so thank you everyone who requested it for giving us an excuse!
Is your favourite daydream galloping along a beach, pristine white sand, your friends around you, bow and arrow in hand, thick armour as you head into battle? No? Where did I lose you? Well if even SOME of that is true, how about listening to real life (ish) Amazon, Amy Obiajulu, talk about her experience being a stunt double in the brilliant film, Wonder Woman 1984? How to get cast, what to expect from the experience, whether you'll be able to steal stuff from set. Enjoy!
This was literally meant to be one of our first episodes EVER and then it got postponed one week, and then two, and then two years happened with Rosanna always coming in "next time" and now. FINALLY. It only took two years and three lockdowns! We have an episode with the amazing carriage driver and sports psychologist, Rosanna Walters-Symons
We are joined by the lovely Ashton and Claire from Ac Equine to talk about... well to talk about how it works really.. As you all know, Tess LOVES anything techy and biology related so expect some excited science noises and a bit of easy learning!
This is a long one, but a big one. We talk to Sandra about her experiences as a black equestrian and the racism she's experienced as a black woman in the equestrian community. She's our new hero. Even if you don't think you'll agree with what's discussed in this episode, we urge you just to listen with an open mind.
Here it is! Our top 10 episodes from this absolute clusterbang of a year. Behind the scenes insight, the usual hilarity and our favourites that aren't the list yet.
What am I doing the minute lockdown's over? Pub? Dinner? Party? Nope, I'm going carriage driving. We love having people on the podcast who care about what they do and Sarah Dance is no different. Her passion and enthusiasm are catching and we LOVED talking about every aspect of the sport(s) that we could fit in. Want a go? Get in line
Today, ladies and gentlemen and other, marks the day we relent on a rule we've had since the podcast began. "Alicia Wilkinson, is not coming on". Alicia used the first lockdown VERY prosperously and started her own business. Did she do this just to get on the podcast? Guess we'll never know. But yes. Listen for a step by step how she did it and come up with your own absolutely genius BibEazness. BibEazness. Business. Gettit?
Two major dorks went to interview an actual major who's been in the army and everything. He was charming and we were overexcited. It's everything you dream it could be.
What do the Equestrian Sports need? MORE DIVERSITY! When do they need them? NOW? Ashleigh Wicheard is not only an amazing racing stable jockey but she's also a member of the BAME Equine and Rural activities Focus Group, helping to make the sport more inclusive and more diverse. Hear about not only her career but how she's making a difference.
If you struggled in the last lockdown (in the UK) or are struggling with how your country is handling the current situation (we do have international listeners - shoutout to the two of you in Vietnam, we see you!) here is an episode with a qualified professional to help you find your way to coping, and maybe even enjoying it, you truly never know
Yaaayyy another episode where we get really off topic. LOVE a chat, whatcha gon' do. We speak to Sophie Green of Evergreen Coaching all about how to stay positive this winter. Topical right?! We've got loads in store to help you guys out during this Lockdown so stay tuned and feel the positive Pony Podcast vibes. Love you all
Ebony Horse Club is located right in the middle of London, in the heart of Brixton. How did they fit a riding school in the centre of Brixton? How do they help the community? What amazing projects have they got going on? Quick! Listen!
Are people still saying "Winter is Coming"? Is that a very old GoT reference? Does this show that we're not actually cool and hip? Does saying hip reaffirm that we're old now?
Aaannyyway. Here's an episode with a lil' Noble Equestrian product review and then us going insane in a room in France starting off on rugs and winter life hacks and ending up with Tess getting stuck in a turnout pen showing that the pony who escaped from it is literally smarter than her. No I don't know how we got from A to B.
Ever heard of Working Equitation? Okay well Alex and I hadn't so we had the LOVELY Holly Barber on to tell us all about it! Want to know more? You know what to do...
We chat to Nottingham University Vet Izzy Wild about her work on Colic research at the Nottingham University Colic and Wound Project. If you want to download any of the resources we talk about in this episode head to the Nottingham University or BHS website - or just give it a google, you all know how it works
Super simple - a sweet chat with PR magician Katie Lawrence from Riviera PR Ltd about how to grow your social media audience and why it's so important to be thinking about your brand and what you're putting out on social media. Oh and there's a bit about food. Because it's us, and everything's better with food involved.
Looking for (another) lockdown project but missing one key component? Trying to update your yard communication but lacking app design skills? Equimi is offering you the simplest of simple solutions, a platform where you simply set up an account, build your own website (with a dedicated helpline for anything that's not playing ball - website's can be like that) and go. Have a listen to learn more and launch yourself into your new chapter!
This week we're joined by the incredible Rosie Tapner, model, presenter, jockey and English Channel swimmer (who HATES swimming). There's insight into how to make having a job while at university work for you, what pressures Rosie faced with modelling, why it's okay if your university experience isn't the absolute massive friendship group, party all the time, raging fun time you're sometimes told it should be, and LOADS of other amazing life advice. We do touch on the issues with weight that Rosie came up against working in modelling and if it's close to home for anyone, visit Rosie's instagram and read some of her latest posts on the industry. She's so honest and transparent and if you feel like you need help, put yourself first and get it.
After a request for an episode covering prohibited substances and how to make sure you're on the right side of the rules, we sit down with Claire Williams the Executive Director of the British Equestrian Trade Association about their NOPS scheme, what that involves and what we need to be careful of to make sure we don't fall foul of their prohibited substances list. This one is super important if you compete affiliated with any organisation, not just British Eventing, British Showjumping, British Dressage or the FEI, as more and more Pony Clubs and Riding Clubs are testing for this stuff. Let us know what you think!
Ever experienced wanderlust? The call of the wild? The pull of adventure? Well this episode is about someone who didn't just feel those, she chased them. Hannah Bicket was one of only 24 riders in the WORLD to take part in the FIRST EVER Gaucho Derby in Patagonia earlier this year AND she and a friend are off next summer to ride 1000km across Mongolia on semi-feral mongol ponies and race in the Mongol Derby. Crazy? Yes. Inspiring.....
The lovely Lydia Heywood joins us to talk about getting into riding as a black rider, riding for Jamaica and being a mentor at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton. Lydia also runs Cool Ridings (best name ever), a foundation with a vision to make equestrian sport more accessible worldwide. If you're looking for someone who doesn't just say "a change has to be made", but GETS UP AND MAKES THE CHANGE, Lydia is your girl and we are So. Here. For. It.
One for those of you like Tess who don't like the sound of her voice (yes, editing hour long episodes when your voice honestly grinds your teeth is horrendous thanks for asking).
Amy Blount joins us once again to talk to Alex about getting in to coaching and doing their qualifications. This is such a good one for anyone looking to do a gap year, assessing their options moving forward or even (as Tess did) going to University and looking for a way to pay for food without dipping into her student loan. Teach one lesson for £30 a week that can go straight on your £30 food shop? Yes please
A very exciting week for anyone who wants a career with horses, the Young Professionals Programme has opened its applications! As we both know (the hard way), making your way in the equestrian industry is tough, even if you did go all the way through to a degree - which isn't the right path for everyone and by no means (trust me) means you have all the skills you might need to run a business. The Young Professionals programme is step 1 to getting you there. But don't just read a description about it, listen!
The second in our Super Systems Series and it's a good'un. We haven't had a good tangent in a while and this has some absolute crackers, evolution, check, laminitis hoof pots, check, ossification of the lateral cartilages, check. An absolutely tip top to toes run down of things you should know about what goes in your horse's hooves.
Lucy Katan, Chief Exec of the British Grooms Association on Employment in the Equestrian Industry. This episode is seriously so important. Any of you who have asked us about being a working pupil, anyone who wants to go and work with horses, anyone who wants to set up their own yard and employ people, THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU. THIS IS STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW. The law, what your rights are, what people deserve. SO IMPORTANT. Listen, share, educate. Join the British Grooms Assosciation
We all have or will at some point in the future, feed our horses a supplement. Electrolytes for hard workers, biotin for the cinderella's, Ulcerkind for the worriers, calmers for the neurotics, but do any of us actually understand how they work? Equine America's Senior Nutritionist Deborah Leabeater joins us, with Tess in full #BiologyExcitement mode, to talk through how she became a nutritionist, why chewing on bark is good and not a piece of evidence to hand to a mental health nurse, why electrolytes are so damn important (and no you can't just use table salt) AND all the new and unbelievably exciting places that supplement research is going.
Strong in Stables is a reference to ex-Prime Minister Theresa May's slogan "Strong and Stable" and YES it ages me and YES most of you young things probably won't get it but you know what. I have the relevant authority to name the episodes and you don't, and I'll name them what I want so there.
The incredible Harriet Upton of We are Athletes plies us with healthy (and delicious) snacks and talks to us about taking training seriously and making the leap of faith into her own professional career by turning away rides and charting her own course to the top. Listen for posterior chain chat and how to get the best bum on the yard.
As many of you know, Tess spent a few months with Harry at the start of this season. So when we were looking for someone to talk to us about competition fitness and aftercare, we knew first hand that there was nobody better.
We couldn't find ANYWHERE we were prepared to cut this down so you lucky ducks get a 50 minute special! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
The first in our Super Systems Series. We start with the Digestive System. This episode is a brief run through of what the parts of the digestive system do and how they assist in keeping the horse alive. They tie in to our feeding episodes as well as those on colic, laminitis and hindgut probiotics (Equibiome). More biology fun!
This week's episode is a bit of an exciting one for us. Diarm is a founder of Equiratings, a sports data and analytics company revolutionising safety in Equestrian Sport and advising Olympic teams on performance improvement. Since its inception Equiratings has diversified into fan engagement apps, results prediction, coaching software and the wonderful Equiratings podcast. Equiratings was what got us into listening to podcasts in the first place and provided the spark of inspiration for setting up our own. An all round lovely human being and #podcastpal for life, might make the interview a weekly thing just for a chat. No this is not "too long"
In an addition to our "fabulous ladies who throw caution to the wind and dare to adventure" we speak to Char Lasseter, International Dressage Diva who decided to run away to Vienna, then to America, then to France, then back to England to run pantos with horses. Real horses, not the there's-a-man-in-the-butt kind. Inspirational.
Who doesn't love a Quarantine Quiz. I honestly think I've done more quizzes over the last three months than ever before in my life (not to brag but I'm damn near undefeated because I know lots of #uselessinformation). Helena Bissex is a certified Quiz Queen, having been part of the Great British Pony Club Quiz team that took part in the international quiz exchange to Canada. As a centre member Helena was able to completely throw herself into this incredible opportunity without having her own horse, showing that you don't need to own or even loan to be able to do incredible things with horses! Plus in this episode we share details of the first ever Pony Podcast Quiz, also known as "Alex is going to absolutely ruin Tess in this Pony Podcast Quiz". Enjoy!
Now if you're anything like us, the only things you've heard about "the Barefoot Brigade" is every now and again when someone pops up on social media and tells you that shoes are cruel, bits are evil and riding makes you a horrible person. We wanted to set the record straight and get some real information on the subject. Nailing metal onto their feet is one of the oldest practices we have when it comes to working with horses, it was around before the Romans and predates bridles, stirrups and saddles!
Enter Krista Jones, down-to-earth, logical and altogether lovely she spoke to us about the concept of keeping your pony barefoot, what you need to consider and what it might mean for their workload - enjoy!
Questions like, why do I need insurance? What does Loss of Use really mean? What's the weirdest claim you've ever seen? All answered in just one episode by the lovely Anna Goodley of Lycetts insurance
For Mental Health Awareness Week, Alex chats to the wonderful Mollie Summerland. Mollie has been so open on her own social media about her struggles, we speak to her about her experiences and how she deals with tough times. As ever, we at The Pony Podcast want you all to know that our inboxes are always open to anyone, whether it's to talk about an episode or just for a chat. We will do our absolute best to make sure no message goes unanswered. Stay safe xx
Oh look! A classic us getting carried away. Listen for National and International Championship experience and talking about crying before your showjumping and Pony Club vs. British Eventing
In the 18th and 19th centuries "decorative hermits" or keeping a hermit in your garden were popular as a fun little eccentricity to entertain your friends when they came for dinner. Different times. With all this practise of isolation, Tess is officially applying for positions as a decorative hermit. Happy to not speak to anyone. Only requirement is that new home has a good change of scenery from her current one.
The utterly wonderful Tara Punter of Tara Punter PR comes on the podcast to talk to us about life in Public Relations (and how tough it is at the moment) and all things mindset. If you liked Lisa Sparrowhawk's episode you will LOVE this and if you've not heard Lisa's yet and LOVE this then scroll back! Either way, it's your one way ticket to motivation.
In a break from our usual scheduling, we were approached by the lovely Alice Bruno from the Online Riders Collective a while ago to see if she could come on and chat about their new initiative, Clinics For A Cause. All the way over in Lexington, West Virginina (not to be confused with Lexington, Kentucky) she makes for our first international guest and we couldn't have asked for a nicer one!
It's been a while since we got totally carried away talking to a guest hasn't it? It hasn't? Oh well. Lisa Sparrowhawk talks us through maintaining a positive attitude in these difficult times and staying motivated for training and progression. Whether by continuing to set yourself goals or working on your personal narrative. Listen for a little Monday Positivity to start your week with.
Time isn't real. Ask a horse what a month is. He doesn't know, it's an arbitrary measure of how many times the earth has turned around from the sun which was basically dreamt up half by the Greeks half by the Romans. Minutes and hours do not exist they're just a way humans have of making sure someone is where you expect them to be when you expect them to be. Dates do not really exist they're just a measure of how far we've got around the sun and they're not even that accurate because we have to add in a day every four years AND the earth's orbit around the sun is constantly changing ever so slightly in shape and length so eventually we're going to be even further out, because time is a social construct which has no real meaning in the world around us it simply exists in human society as an arbitrary way of dividing up our circadian rhythms and controlling society as a whole for global trade and transport. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
The lovely Amy Blount (UKCC Level 3, BD Central coaches rep, National Development Programme for Coaching Excellence) fills us in on how she got starting in coaching, ending up in dressage (having tried pretty much everything else) adapting to this new situation and the perils of cardio.
Dengie Senior Nutritionist Katie Williams and Buckingham Equine Vet talk to us all about Laminitis and why we need to be as careful as ever at the moment as we can't keep our ponies as fit as they might otherwise be. It's a topic we learn about so early but I'm always learning new things!
We hope you're all keeping safe! If you ever need some additional human contact don't hesitate to drop us a message - we love hearing from you!
We are joined by two Canadian Great Britain Ultimate Frisbee players (don't @ me, that sentence makes sense, they're from Canada they play for Great Britain) to really drive home our descent into madness. Any questions on Ultimate Frisbee send them to theponypod@gmail.com and they will be forwarded on. Any questions on regular frisbee should be kept to yourself.
For someone who you would imagine would be quite aware of her privacy having one owner with a notoriously passionate fan base, Yazmin Pinchen was very easy to persuade into letting two strange girls into her kitchen to record this episode....
This episode was recorded before we took the decision to isolate which was a week before lockdown - rest assured we are no longer entering people's houses with or without whatever germs we might bring with us. Keep safe everyone and please keep isolating, you really are protecting everyone when you choose to stay at home!
In our first Isolation Interview, Jennifer Black from Mikado Equine in Medstead, Hampshire talks to us about how a PhD in Computer Science prepared her for starting her own tack shop, WHY she started her own tack shop and the benefits of being able to do everything yourself.
Our first lockdown log! We wanted to make sure any of you who were looking for a bit more company or even finding ideas for how to pass the time had somewhere to go to have your two Podcast Pals chatting away to you for half an hour. We'll be trying to produce 2 episodes a week for you all for this reason and to keep ourselves sane too! Shoot us any suggestions for passtimes and keep an eye on the blog for more ideas for isolation games!
The lovely Laura Cutter, agent extraordinaire, took some time pre-isolation to talk to us about her job! Having started in sales Laura by chance found herself managing sponsored partners by chance while providing maternity cover and found herself with a raison d'être (thats "reason to be" in French #cultured). Listen for what to ask yourself when looking for a sponsor, why it's easier to sell someone else and the perfect answer to "what three questions best describe you" - be quick before everyone else learns it!
This episode is dedicated to everyone isolating at the moment, you're protecting those of us (Tess) for whom getting the virus would be much less of a barrel of laughs than her faulty lungs normally are.
But most of all this episode is dedicated to that one person who gave us our only One Star review with the sentence "Sorry girls but there's just too much nonsense". A full 30 minutes of nothing but the finest nonsense our first 25 episodes have to offer, stay tuned for part 2 and feel free to scroll down to early episodes to get the nonsense first hand. Happy nonsensing!
As promised, part 2 of Myth Busting with discussion on Alex giving herself colic and eating potatoes like apples....
I want to include a little warning - we do mention the COVID 19 word, this was recorded when the virus was relatively low impact. We do not talk about it for long, and only in relation to isolation procedure for horses. If you're finding all the media coverage of the virus a bit overwhelming - 11.12 we start talking about contagious diseases (strangles, EHV) and vaccinations, 13.15 we mention Tess not wanting coronavirus because she's asthmatic, 16.26 we talk about it with isolation procedure. Each mention is only 30s-1min so easily skippable but if you'd rather just avoid it completely we move on to a new topic at 26.00. Look after yourselves and that includes your mental health and not letting this overwhelm you. xx
Having got completely carried away talking to the wonderful Nicola Kinnard-Comedie (so unlike us right) about horse first aid myths we decided to give you all a cheeky two-parter. You'll get part two next week but only if you're really REALLY good.
We bid farewell to the Talent question with this compilation of our favourite answers to the three questions we ask everyone.
If not ONE PERSON messages us saying how impressed they are. I. Will. Kick. Off. That's it. I'm quitting. No really. I'm done. Well I'm not done, you can't get rid of me that easily but I'm going to be upset. The PRODUCTION VALUE on this. The MUSIC. The INTRO. The INDIVIDUAL NAMES I HAD TO CUT OUT OF INDIVIDUAL EPISODES. Sometimes, my genius, it is truly astounding (Jezza Clarkson, when he was still on Top Gear)
A very blustery and damp Storm Dennis kinda day saw us go and chat to the lovely Becky Storer about life as a tetrathlete and getting her Modern Pentathlon career crackalacking. Come for the discussion ponies who just want to jump fences, pistol shooting unfortunately not being a transferrable skill to laser tag and chicken nuggets, stay for a very grumpy cat making attempts on Tess' life first through the allergen warfare and then actual teeth when slyer techniques failed. I nearly died making this podcast you guys. You're welcome.
Ever wondered what two tired podcast hosts and two parents "trying their best" to cook "quietly" who definitely "didn't" wish we would "just move for God's sake" sounds like? Special appearance from Mumma B and Papa B's Podcast debut being such loyal fans of the show. Enjoy some of our favourite winter life hacks and a sneaky sneeaakkyyy summer one for all our Southern Hemisphere Superstars
An episode that's been a year in the making. We have a lot of #superwomen on the podcast and it's safe to say that Alice Goring has well and truly earned her membership badge. Advanced eventer (on a 15hh), PhD, cancer research scientist, home renovator AND manager and mother to instagram SENSATION Teddy the Shetland. There is absolutely nothing the girl can't do and she talks to us about it all, including Teddy's vital work as a therapy pony for Shooting Star Chase hospice. She was one of the podcast's first fans and has been one of its biggest supporters. Speaking to her has been a long time coming!
You guys ever heard of rewilding? Google it. Watch George Monbiot speak about it. Get enthused and interested in it. Accept that while George is an incredible public speaker and you're a big fan of his ideas he is probably a bit on the extreme side. Love ya George. Love your ideas. We're probably not going to reintroduce bears but keep on keeping on, big fan of your work.
Equibiome talk to us about hindgut bacteria and biodiversity. Tess gets very excited about this. Can you tell she writes the descriptions.
Founder of Neue Schule (pronounced Noyer Shooler, not New Shool) Heather Hyde talks to us about starting the company all the research they do into bit design and how what we put in our ponies' mouths actually affects them as well as a bit about the Neue Schule Academy. The gauntlet is thrown down for Tess on the new synchronicity system, will she win the chocolate and champane? Will she completely embarrass herself having backed herself so hard? The tension is too much to bear.
Another double episode week bringing you the facts the whole facts and nothing but the facts from one of our favourite tame vets, Izzy Wild. You'll remember Izzy from such fun episodes as Colic REACTions aaannndd well actually that's it so far but here's the second! Everything you need to know about the current outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus in South Hampshire. NB Also relevant if you're not from South Hampshire.
In celebration of our 50th episode we had another go at one of the first episodes we ever recorded, which was all about feeding - good for this time of year and trying to get back in shape post Christmas! Tess absolutely SURPASSES herself with the fun facts and theres even a little appearance from her dog Wolly at the beginning. Enjoy!
Almost one full year since we first sat down together and recorded our first two episodes in Alex's brother's bedroom (thank you Freddy) we sit down in Tess' kitchen to talk about our ten most listened to episodes. There's a bit of behind the scenes colour added for each of them, if you've not heard one on the list - quick! Go back! Listen! We'll wait while you do! If your favourite isn't on the list drop us a line and we'll compile another top 10 just for you.
We want to thank you guys all so much for lending us your time over the last year and listening to us talk, laugh and eat (#AlexEats) for so long. For just one year it's been a crazy one and we're so touched by all the support and the mad notion that some of you not only listen once but come back again and again. It means more than this description can express or has the word allowance for. All our Love. T&A
One year after we pushed this little idea for a podcast off the ridge and started rolling it into action, we thought we would do a little episode introducing ourselves properly. It's a bit of who we are, the ponies we've had, the things we've done, how easily led Tess is, how neurotic Alex is. All the good stuff.
Alice and Sarah Oppenheimer tell us all about setting up Headmore Stud and how they've produced their own dressage dynasty. See if you can spot the subtle moment the washing machine came on and when Charlie dog decides he needs to take a more active role in the interview...
Showing producer extraordinaire Sam Roberts talks us through getting involved in showing, the perils of riding 12.2's, keeping feathers silky soft and passing off dressage accidents as intentional movements. We LOVED this episode and not just because she offered us lasagne when we turned up to record. Hope you enjoy it a lasagne amount!
It's been a while since we had a care episode of Alex and I getting distracted and barely staying on topic and chatting for half an hour of solid tangent following. Enjoy OR just put it on while you're doing other things to have some company! Either way definitely listen please.
Join us for the second instalment of chatting with the lovely Suz from A Holistic Solution as we talk about her jetting off to America for Classical Dressage Training. more on Alex's uncatchable horse and spontaneous piaffing. You heard it here first.
The absolutely lovely Suz from A Holistic solution allowed us into her kitchen, plied us with tea and some particularly delicious biscuits and told us all about bodywork, classical dressage training (I know, there's more than the normal type, we we're shocked and alarmed too), equine touch, craniosacral therapy and reiki, among MANY MANY other things. No wonder we couldn't cram it all into one episode.
The lovely Alexandra Oldbury-Davis gives us a taste of horseball with the lovely Casper and we chat about the incredible sport that is horseball and how everyone can get involved. If anyone wants a go but needs a fellow first timer to keep them company please DM The Pony Podcast or email theponypod@gmail.com because we are DESPERATE for a proper go and are always here to keep fellow podcasters company!!
In the middle of a very noisy event in France, sat a very nervous Felicity Collins with TWO horses in her and their first 5* competition. COMPLETELY unaware that two podcast hosts were about to press gang her into recording an episode in the most British way possible given that one of them isn't British: "Oh only if you wouldn't mind. If it's not too much trouble. We HATE to take you away from your preparation. It's just our listeners would LOVE to hear from you. No really only if you really want to. Please don't feel pressured" as if we hadn't already wrangled her lorry plates out of an unsuspecting helper and weren't about to turn up outside the door accidentally on purpose. Luckily she chose the path of least resistance...
In the follow up to last week's Forever Homes episode, we talk retraining with the Blue Cross' Grace Haylar. From tips for Alex catching the uncatchable Maria to dealing with pessimistic ponies, make sure you give their (and our!) social medias a follow to keep up to date with all of the going's on at the centre AND see some helpful training tutorials. You truly will be learning from the best!
