I’m Jeff Walker, the creator of productlaunchformula.com – a system that’s been used by thousands of entrepreneurs in hundreds of different niches and markets. This podcast is all about getting you off the 12+ hour days/7 days a week treadmill and helping you build a business and life you love.

One of the worst decisions I made early on in my business?

Following this advice from a well-respected marketing guru:

“Don’t hire anyone. Employees will make your life hell.”

I trusted this person, so listening to them felt like the smart play.

And while it did keep things simple in some respects, it also kept my business small – and way more stressful than it needed to be.

When I eventually figured out that this was terrible advice (which took way longer than I’d like to admit), my business skyrocketed… and I started having a lot more fun in it too.

Of course, there’s more nuance to this than just “hire a bunch of people.”

Which is why I invited Mike Michalowicz – who literally wrote the book on building unstoppable teams – for this episode of Dare to Launch.

If you think you’re selling knowledge, think again…

Knowledge is everywhere. And it’s free. Podcasts, YouTube, blogs… answers are just one Google search or ChatGPT conversation away.

So what are we really selling?

Our framework. Our approach. Our way of doing things. And while that might sound simple, it’s not easy…

I didn’t plan it.

It just kinda happened… and then it became a “thing”.

A few years back, I was doing a live session in my Launch Masterclass, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw it…

Right next to my camera was a squirrel.

And this thing is just going nuts.

Now I’m live with thousands of people. So I’m doing everything I can to stay focused and not get distracted, but I can’t help it…

… my eyes keep wandering over to this little guy scampering all over my deck.

I knew I had to say something.

Dan and I laughed about it. And by the next session, he’d rigged up a second camera and “Squirrel Cam” was born.

Moments like that often feel like mistakes. But every year since, there’s always someone who asks:

“Is there a squirrel cam this year?”

Yeah, it is kinda ridiculous. But “squirrel cam” is what launching is all about – showing up live, figuring things out in real time, and leaning into whatever happens.

Affiliate promotions (where you promote someone else’s product to your list) can be one of the easiest, fastest, and most profitable launches you do.

I’ve been on both sides – both promoting and having other people promote my launches – for literally decades now.

And it’s no secret that I love these kinds of promotions.

Done well – where you promote a proven offer that gets real results for your people – it’s a triple home run… 1. You make a lot of sales, without having to do all the hard work of creating and launching a product.

Your people get great results… so they love you for introducing them to the product.
You build up great rapport and relationships with the people you help promote.

Win win win.

But… like anything… there’s a right and a wrong way to do these sorts of promotions.

And doing them the right way makes an enormous difference…

To the point where I’ve seen brand-new affiliates with tiny lists FAR outconvert established “gurus” with massive lists.

And almost every year, I see at least one brand new partner who comes out of nowhere and lands one of the big sales prizes I offer for my launch.

So what makes for a killer affiliate promotion?

Pat Flynn didn’t set out to build a Pokémon brand with over 4 billion views and 3 million followers…

He just wanted to learn how to use TikTok. So he created a simple experiment – he was going to post one video a day for 60 days.

That’s when things kinda snowballed…

What happened next is a crazy story, with a bunch of powerful lessons. And since Pat’s a good friend, I invited him onto the Dare to Launch podcast so he can share it with you.

Pat’s name might ring a bell. He’s a successful entrepreneur many times over. But one of the things I like most about him is how he loves to learn and experiment.

Take this new brand for example…

Pat already had multiple successful businesses in wildly different niches (think everything from earning passive income to Pokémon)...

But he wanted to learn how to get really, really good at TikTok. So he started another new business.

This one was also in the Pokémon niche… but was exclusively focused on TikTok.

And the wild thing is… he didn’t use ANY of his existing audience or platforms to help promote it. Because the goal, first and foremost, was LEARNING.

This was a brand-new niche, audience, and channel for him – he had zero reputation, zero credibility, and zero followers. And that’s exactly how Pat liked it…

He knew the best way to get good was to do this “from scratch.”

(And to make doubly sure he wasn’t recognized, he never even showed his face in his videos.)

Like anyone starting something new, Pat had to wade through that initial “sucky” phase – when everything feels hard, messy, and you don’t see any results…

The first month was a struggle…

His videos were getting a couple hundred views – nothing spectacular. And if he was only focused on metrics, he probably would have quit.

But he wasn’t. And he didn’t…

He was committed to his 60 day experiment. So he kept showing up and – on day 35…

Boom – one of his videos blew up, hitting 750,000 views.

The snowball started to pick up pace…

His views and subscribers started ramping up… fast. And cool opportunities started coming his way:

He was invited by the Detroit Lions to open Pokémon packs – on the field!
He got to meet famous NBA and UFC fighters through his channel
He started clocking up millions of views every single day – and bringing in five figures in ad revenue
He launched Card Party – a live event for Pokémon collectors, creators, and fans. The last event attracted over 5,500 attendees… and sold out with $0 marketing. (It’s now so popular, he’s now doing TWO events a year.)
He leveraged his Pokémon audience to generate 2,000 extra sales for his new book, land himself on the NYT bestseller list… and generate hundreds of social shares along the way

… all from taking one daily action – uploading a simple video.

Back in 2005, launching was a game of one-hit wonders – build a product, launch it once… and then start again with something new.

As anyone who’s spent time in the comment section of YouTube will tell you – a community left unchecked can get messy real fast.

So it stands to reason that if you want to build a thriving community, you need strict guidelines and rules… right?

I did a live broadcast with them in their community and was blown away by the energy in the room. I’ve never seen anything like it. (And I’ve been invited to a LOT of communities.)

What Emma and Eleanor have built is bigger than a community… it’s a movement.

One of my favorite questions for my entrepreneur friends: “What do you do when you need to get inspired… and you don’t have a whole lot of time?”

After all, as entrepreneurs, we get paid for the ideas we create and put out into the world.

So I lace up my shoes and go for a walk or a run in the woods. Because that’s where my best ideas show up.

In fact, it’s one of the reasons I moved out into the mountains of Durango, Colorado.

A few months ago, we hosted a private, high-end event with some serious entrepreneurs… and we left with some big takeaways.

Many people have this backward…

They think failure is a sign they’ve done something wrong. But the truth is... failure isn’t a setback…

It’s a step forward.

Failure is how you actually get where you want to go.

The folks who win big often aren’t the most fearless or the ones with superhuman levels of willpower…

They’re the ones who made a simple decision – “Whatever happens, I'm going to keep going.”

That’s it.

It’s the same way I built my business. From a $1650 launch, to my first six-figure launch, to rebuilding after it all fell apart, to my first multimillion dollar launch... I just kept going.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve probably hosted every kind of event you can imagine…

“Jeff, what if my product is just for fun? What If I teach ice skating courses? Or guitar lessons? How do I sell that service as truly transformational for my clients?”

I get this question all the time, and it’s one of my favorites. In this clip from our Launch Masterclass Q&A earlier this year, I offer my two cents. Lots of folks worry that marketing “fun” is a lot more difficult than marketing professional success courses or, say, physical health products. But in my opinion, that line of logic drastically underestimates the value of fun in today’s world. In explaining my point, I turn to the great work that our friend Amy Small has done with Knit Collage. She doesn't just sell yarn and designs… she sells her clients the ability to connect to their inner child through a tactile, communal crafting experience. So if your product can help someone become a more confident, happier, accomplished individual, you’re off to the races.

I lost my first business in the blink of an eye. And in this episode, I’m sharing that story.

As some folks may know, I used to publish a premium newsletter for stock market investors in the late ’90s and early 2000s. I gradually built up a loyal following of over 800 people, pulling in hundreds of thousands in annual subscriptions. But the business relationship I had with my partner at the time just wasn’t a great fit, and poor communication slowly eroded our dynamic. One Monday, I got a phone call that shook me to my core: My partner was starting his own business and taking our subscribers with him. Just like that, everything I’d been building for 8 years evaporated.

This time period was one of the most difficult in my life. Yet now I look back on it with a smile. At that moment, I already had an inkling of what I might do next. But I had no idea just how much success – and mind-blowing impact – I would get the great privilege of experiencing in the years to come.

It’s hard to beat the rags-to-riches entrepreneur origin story. By nature they’re uniquely entertaining, often harrowing, and always motivational. If you don’t succeed right out of the gate, the timing could be off! Or perhaps your copy just isn’t fully aligned with your personality. The more time you spend refining your offer and your copy to reveal your authentic self, the closer you’ll get to where you need to be. Above all, Michael preaches the importance of focusing on outcomes in your offer. We can’t just tell people how many videos or workbooks they’ll get with our services. People need a promise of what they will become at the end of the process. And if you can make that promise so exciting that people genuinely want to share it, you’re on the right track.
