For every dollar the world invests in protecting nature, it spends thirty dollars destroying it. In this episode of the Climate Correction Podcast, host Shannon Maganiezin sits down with two of the authors behind the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) State of Finance for Nature 2026 report to unpack what that staggering imbalance means for biodiversity, climate resilience, economic stability, and the future of finance itself. The numbers are sobering: in 2023 alone, roughly $7.3 trillion flowed into nature-negative activities, while just $220 billion supported nature-based solutions.
Shannon is joined by Ivo Mulder, who leads UNEP's Climate Finance Unit and has helped unlock more than one billion dollars for sustainable agriculture, forestry, and restoration across developing countries. Ivo is one of the report creators. Ivo co-founded the Natural Capital Finance Alliance and the ENCORE tool, laying the groundwork for the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures. Also joining the conversation is Michael König-Sykorova, Senior Project Manager at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and a leading expert in climate and nature finance data. Michael contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report and led key analytical components of the State of Finance for Nature 2026 report. He iwas lead author on this report and is also a founding member of the Climate Finance and Sustainability Centre at Makerere University in Uganda.
The conversation begins with Michael walking listeners through the scope and methodology of the report, including how the team defined and measured nature-negative finance across sectors, what qualifies as nature-based solutions finance, and how the two sides of the equation can be meaningfully compared. He shares what the data reveals about trends over time, whether progress is moving fast enough, and how the report's findings were validated through rigorous peer review.
Ivo then steps back from the numbers to explore what these findings signal about the trajectory of global finance. He examines whether nature-negative investments are starting to slow or still expanding, where the biggest synergies are emerging across the three Rio Conventions on climate, biodiversity, and land degradation, and what governments, public finance institutions, private investors, and financial institutions each need to take from this report. The discussion closes with a look at the financial instruments and emerging biodiversity finance mechanisms showing the most promise for scaling investment into nature-based solutions.
The takeaway is clear: the challenge isn't only how much we invest in protecting nature. It's where the rest of our money is going. Redirecting even a fraction of nature-negative flows could fundamentally reshape outcomes for climate, biodiversity, and global resilience.

Florida agriculture quietly underpins everyday life in the Sunshine State, shaping everything from grocery prices and water quality to how communities bounce back after a hurricane. In this episode of the Climate Correction Podcast, host Shannon Maganiezin sits down with the team behind the newly released report, Voices of Florida Farmers: Building a Circular Bioeconomy, to explore how the state's farmers, ranchers, foresters, and aquaculturists are producing more with less land, water, and resources, while keeping food affordable and local economies strong.
Leading the conversation is Courtney Girgis, the report's lead author, who grew up on a beef cattle, corn, and soybean farm in northern Missouri and now writes about agriculture from her family's small-acreage farm in Oklahoma. Courtney unpacks what a "circular bioeconomy" means in practice: an approach to agriculture that moves away from the linear "make, use, waste" model and instead keeps nutrients, water, and materials cycling, starting with healthy soil and extending outward into partnerships across the food system.
Joining her are three of the Florida producers featured in the report. Beaver Yoder, a Florida Panhandle cattle rancher, partners with neighboring crop farmers to graze his herd on cover crops between cash crop seasons, a practice that builds soil health, fertilizes fields, and creates a new revenue stream for everyone involved. Lanette Sobel, founder of Fertile Earth Worm Farm (now the largest commercial composting operation in South Florida), works across a wide network of distributors, food pantries, and farms to make sure food scraps go to their "highest and best use," feeding people first, then animals, then soil. Timothy Solano, a second-generation clam farmer and operations manager at Cedar Key Aquaculture Farms, raises clams that filter pollutants like nitrogen and carbon from Florida's coastal waters before being harvested for sale at Costco and Whole Foods. The clams' crushed shells go on to repair roads and surface local school parking lots.
Together, the conversation moves from real-world examples of circularity on the farm and on the water, to the regulatory and economic obstacles that keep these practices from being more widespread, and to what listeners can do to support a more circular Florida. Along the way, the guests speak candidly about the realities of thin margins, volatile markets, red tide, local ordinances, and the long arc of agriculture's shift from generalist to specialist, and back again.

The Footprint Project was founded on a simple but radical premise: every disaster is a rebuilding moment, and every rebuilding moment is a decarbonization opportunity. Will walks us through the organization's mission to deploy clean energy and sustainable technologies directly into disaster response and reconstruction, turning cascading climate emergencies into entry points for long-term resilience. Peatlands 101 - Florida's Hidden Climate Superpower
In this episode, we're joined by two leading scientists from The Nature Conservancy to explore one of the most under-recognized natural climate solutions on the planet: peatlands.
Catherine Fitzgerald, global lead for peatlands at The Nature Conservancy, brings a wealth of expertise in unlocking equitable and durable opportunities to conserve and restore peatlands worldwide. With a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University and years of experience as a professional wetland scientist, Catherine leads TNC's global work to protect these ecosystems for climate, water, and people.
Morgan Higman, climate strategy director for The Nature Conservancy in Florida, focuses on accelerating clean energy and natural climate solutions across the state. Her doctoral research in public administration and policy at Florida State University's Askew School was supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Research and Education Foundation.
Peatlands are ancient wetlands made up of layers of partially decayed plant matter that have accumulated over thousands of years. Bogs, swamps, and fens all fall into this category. Though they cover just 3% of the planet, peatlands store one-third of the world's soil carbon and 10% of its freshwater. That's more carbon than all the world's forests combined. Healthy peatlands filter water, buffer communities against floods and drought, reduce wildfire risk, and support unique plant and animal species. When drained or disturbed, they flip from carbon sinks to carbon sources, releasing stored greenhouse gases and compounding the very climate risks they once helped prevent.
Catherine and Morgan walk us through why Florida is a standout state for peatland restoration. A 2025 TNC spatial analysis identified Florida as having some of the greatest restoration potential in the Southeast, with the St. Johns River Water Management District emerging as a priority area. With support from VoLo Foundation, TNC is conducting a deep-dive assessment of high-opportunity sites across the region, bringing together water management districts, local landowners, scientists, and community partners to identify lighthouse projects that can catalyze action at scale.
This work is part of TNC's broader global peatland strategy, with active initiatives across more than a dozen countries and states, including North Carolina, Minnesota, Colombia, and Mongolia. In North Carolina alone, TNC was recently awarded a $200 million EPA grant to restore and protect approximately 43,000 acres of peatlands. Florida's program builds directly on those decades of groundwork, with the goal of creating a replicable framework for the entire Southeast.

In this special episode of Climate Correction Podcast, we celebrate the power of student-led climate innovation and announce the 2026 VoLo VISTA Award Winners. The VISTA Award, created by VoLo Foundation, recognizes students who exemplify leadership, vision, innovation, sustainability, technology, and action-oriented climate solutions. We are joined by an extraordinary research team from the University of Miami Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. The team includes Jasmine Rodriguez, a first-year PhD student; Farzad Rezaeicherati, a second-year PhD candidate; Sevil Ozsut, also a second-year PhD candidate; and their advising professor, Dr. Ali G. Together, they are advancing a breakthrough solution at the intersection of materials science, climate mitigation, and Florida's natural ecosystems.
Their winning project is called Functionalization and Pre-Carbonation of Florida-Native Algae Biochar for Carbon Negative Cementitious Composites. It reimagines one of the most carbon-intensive materials on Earth: concrete. Cement production alone accounts for roughly eight percent of global CO₂ emissions. This team is tackling that challenge head-on by replacing a significant portion of cement with algae-derived biochar sourced from Florida-grown algae.
In simple terms, the team transforms algae into a charcoal-like material that naturally traps carbon. They then chemically treat, or "functionalize," this biochar so it bonds effectively with concrete, overcoming a major limitation seen in past biochar-concrete experiments where strength and durability were compromised. Their innovation doesn't just maintain structural performance; it enhances it. Even more importantly, the process permanently stores CO₂ inside the concrete itself, turning a traditionally high-emissions material into a carbon-storing one.
During the episode, Jasmine walks us through the science behind the process, the climate and construction challenges they set out to solve, and how this novel idea emerged. The team explains how they measure success through rigorous lab testing at the University of Miami, evaluating strength, durability, workability, and long-term carbon storage. We also explore what large-scale, real-world application could look like, from infrastructure and buildings to broader adoption within the construction industry.
The conversation turns toward what's next: scaling the research, refining the material, and moving closer to real-world deployment. As billions of garments end up in landfills each year, Catherine Valdivieso's SwapCo app makes sustainable fashion simple by helping users "swipe, match and swap" clothes while curbing overconsumption this holiday season

According to Earth.org, the fashion industry produces more than 100 billion garments each year, and an estimated 92 million tons of them end up in landfills. That is the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothes dumped every second.
The same source states that if nothing changes, that figure could rise to 134 million tons by the end of the decade, while the industry's carbon emissions are projected to increase by 50 percent by 2030.
To help reverse that trend, Catherine Valdivieso, CEO and founder of SwapCo, created an app designed to make sustainable fashion social, local, and easy. SwapCo works like a "dating app for fashion": users upload photos of their clothes, swipe to find matches, and connect with others to swap items in person. No packaging, no shipping, no waste.
With record levels of clothing waste worldwide, Valdivieso's work comes at a crucial time. As the holiday season approaches, her message is simple: slow down consumption and rediscover joy in conscious fashion choices.
"I wanted to show my kids that small actions matter," she said.
Catherine, what gave you the idea to create SwapCo?
It began as a personal wake-up call. I watched The True Cost, a documentary about the dark side of fast fashion, and I was shocked. It made me question my own habits. I tried renting clothes, but everything came wrapped in plastic and shipped across the country. It just didn't feel sustainable. I thought, what if there was a local, people-driven alternative? That's how SwapCo was born.
You've mentioned that your children inspired you to pursue this mission.
Absolutely. I think about the world they'll inherit, one where climate challenges and waste are daily realities. I wanted to set an example. SwapCo is my way of showing them that small, individual actions can create meaningful change when multiplied by millions.
Every year, 92 million tons of textile waste are generated worldwide. In the U.S. alone, the average consumer discards 81.5 pounds of clothing, about 2,150 pieces per second nationwide. When you hear numbers like that, what goes through your mind?
It's staggering. But it also gives me hope. If we can extend the life of garments through systems like SwapCo, we can dramatically reduce that mountain of waste. Clothes shouldn't be disposable; they should tell stories and live many lives.
Why do people find it so easy to throw clothes away?
Because fast fashion made it normal. We're used to buying cheap items, wearing them once or twice, and tossing them. Social media reinforces that; people don't want to repeat outfits. SwapCo flips that script. Instead of discarding clothes, you can give them a second life and get something "new to you" in return. It's fun, social, and sustainable.
For those who haven't tried it, how exactly does SwapCo work?
Imagine if Poshmark and Tinder had a baby. You upload photos of your clothes, swipe right or left to find a match, and when both people agree, you chat to arrange a local meet-up. There's no shipping, which means fewer emissions and more community interaction.
"We're changing how people see secondhand fashion"
Some people still see used clothes as old or low-quality. How are you changing that mindset?
By reframing the experience. When you open SwapCo, you see beautiful, trendy items, treasures waiting for new stories. It's about style, not sacrifice. And because you're connecting with real people, swapping becomes social and meaningful.
We've seen incredible stories. One student swapped an outfit for her first job interview, and she got the job. Others have made new friends at swap events. Some users even suggested expanding the app beyond fashion to books or sports gear. That sense of community is what drives me.
Beyond swapping, what sustainable habits do you personally follow?
I try to buy less, choose natural fabrics like cotton or linen, and mend or upcycle what I already own. I also share clothes with friends. The key is progress, not perfection. Small changes add up when we all do them.
"During the holidays, give experiences, not just things"
The holidays are approaching, a time when consumption spikes. How can people make it more sustainable?
It's all about intentionality. Instead of buying new, consider giving experiences, like a trip or a meal together, or secondhand gifts that tell a story. A pre-loved item can carry more meaning than something new from a store.
And what would you say to those who still want to enjoy fashion and gift-giving while being mindful?
Focus on creativity. Swap an outfit for your holiday party. Gift something with a story. Conscious fashion isn't about deprivation; it's about finding joy in choices that are better for people and the planet.

Dr. Tianyi Sun is a climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund. This nonpartisan, nonprofit organization relies on science and economics to tackle climate change and other pressing environmental issues of our day. Tianyi holds a Ph.D. in Climate Dynamics from the University of Texas at Austin and did her undergraduate studies in Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University, China. Her work at EDF focuses on the impacts of short-lived climate pollutants, such as methane and hydrogen. She explores how their emissions and mitigation affect the climate system and the role of short-lived gases in net zero emissions pathways. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) supports effective carbon pricing across the global economy; however, it will take years to build political support in countries across the world. Yet, to meet global climate goals, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calls for urgent progress today. The goal is a 45% reduction in global emissions by 2030, which is equivalent to eliminating the annual emissions of the United Kingdom every week for the next seven years. In response, companies and governments are ramping up action in a race toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
There is a massive ambition gap between the current pace of decarbonization and the pace needed to reach net zero by 2050. While carbon markets are a key tool in helping close this ambition gap, they have also been subject to criticism. Angela Churie Kallhauge is the Executive Vice President, Impact at Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Her work is focused on using inclusive processes and economic approaches to achieve ambitious climate solutions that deliver equitable benefits to people around the world. Angela joined EDF from the World Bank where she served as the head of the Secretariat of the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) for five years. Before that she was at the Swedish Energy Agency where she worked for 14 years on climate change, energy and development issues. During her time at the Swedish Energy Agency, she worked on carbon market development issues, including portfolio development and capacity building in developing countries. She also served as the EU lead negotiator on adaptation and resilience issues under the UNFCCC for close to a decade and represented Sweden in the Adaptation Fund Board where she led the work on accreditation for direct access. Angela also draws experience from the International Renewable Energy Agency, where she spent a couple of years leading the work to develop a climate change work program that places renewable energy action as a key part of climate change strategies. Prior to her engagement at the Swedish Agency, Angela spent close to a decade working at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and in Zimbabwe and Kenya with civil society organizations on climate, energy and development policy.

Circular economy and the acceleration of carbon removal What do you know about circular economy and the magic of biochar?
A circular economy is an economic system aimed at minimizing waste and making the most of resources. In a circular economy, resources are kept in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them, and then recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of each service life. This contrasts with the traditional linear economy model, which follows a "take-make-dispose" pattern.
The circular economy is based on several principles, including designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. It encourages practices such as recycling, reuse, remanufacturing, and the use of renewable energy sources.
Biochar is a type of charcoal produced from biomass (organic matter) through pyrolysis, which involves heating the biomass without oxygen. Biochar is known for its potential benefits in agriculture, carbon sequestration, and soil improvement. When added to soil, biochar can enhance soil fertility, water retention, and nutrient availability. It also can sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide, helping mitigate climate change.
The "magic" of biochar lies in its ability to provide multiple environmental benefits simultaneously. By converting organic waste into biochar instead of letting it decompose, we not only avoid the release of greenhouse gases such as methane, but we also create a valuable soil amendment that can improve agricultural productivity and help restore degraded soils. This aligns with the principles of the circular economy by turning waste into a resource and promoting sustainable land management practices.

Ellen and Dave hope to complete a series of public-oriented events associated with the book and restart the summits (the last one was right before COVID) in the next year or two, especially as the impacts of climate change are expected to get more extreme in the future. Climate change doesn’t cause hurricanes, wildfires, heat waves, or flooding, but it makes them more extreme with costly and, in some cases, tragic consequences.

Ellen Prager, PhD, is a marine scientist and author, widely recognized for her expertise and ability to make science entertaining and understandable for people of all ages. She currently works as a freelance writer, consultant, Chief Scientist for StormCenter Communications, and Science/Program Advisor to Celebrity Cruises in the Galapagos Islands. She was previously the Chief Scientist for the Aquarius Reef Base program in Key Largo, FL, which includes the world’s only undersea research station, and at one time, was the Assistant Dean at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Dr. Prager has built a national reputation as a scientist and spokesperson for the earth and ocean sciences and is a sought-after speaker for public-oriented events. She has appeared on “The Today Show” and “NBC News”, “Good Morning America”, CNN, “Fox News”, “CBS Early Show”, The Weather Channel, shows for the Discovery Channel, and was a consultant for the Disney movie “Moana.”
Ellen focuses much of her time on bringing earth and ocean science to the public through writing, working with the media, creating innovative partnerships, and speaking events. Her recent publication “Dangerous Earth: What We Wish We Knew About Volcanoes, Hurricanes, Climate Change, Earthquakes and More” takes an engaging look at what scientists wish they knew about some of the planet’s most powerful forces. Her latest novel for young readers, “Escape Greenland”, released in April 2021, combines fast-paced adventure, humor, and relatable characters with fun learning about climate change, science, and nature. It is the second book in a series entitled “The Wonder List Adventures” published by Tumblehome Learning. The first book, “Escape Galapagos,” released in 2019, received rave reviews from readers. The first book in her previous middle-grade series, “The Shark Whisperer”, has been called, ‘an underwater Harry Potter.’ Her previous popular science book, “Sex, Drugs, and Sea Slime: The Oceans’ Oddest Creatures and Why They Matter”, took an entertaining look at marine biodiversity, its relevance to the average person, and why ocean life and resources are now at risk. Ocean advocate Carl Safina says of the book, “A great book for beginners and even experts can learn from and enjoy—this is possibly the best general book ever written on creatures of the deep.” It has also been called, “hilarious,” “tastefully salacious,” and “fascinating.” She has written articles for scientific journals, public-oriented magazines, and several other books including “Chasing Science at Sea: Racing Hurricanes, Stalking Sharks, and Living Undersea with Ocean Experts” and “The Oceans.” Ellen has also published a series of children’s books with the National Geographic Society. The first, “SAND” received the 2000 Parents Choice Award, and was followed by “Volcano” and “Earthquakes.”
Ellen has participated in research expeditions to places such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the deep waters of the Florida Reef tract. She obtained a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, a master’s degree from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and in 1992, a doctorate from Louisiana State University.
In 1992, as a faculty scientist at the Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, MA, Ellen taught oceanography to undergraduates, teachers, and senior citizens in a unique educational program in which classroom learning is supplemented by extensive hands-on experience at sea aboard tall sailing ships. She later became the resident director of the National Undersea Research Center in the Bahamas. In 1997, she joined the U.S. Geological Survey where she split her time between scientific research in marine geology, oceanography, and coral reefs and public education. During 1998, the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO), Ellen co-chaired the subcommittee on research, exploration, and education for the National Ocean Conference presided by the President and Vice President of the United States. Ellen was a member and then Chairman of the Ocean Research and Resources Advisory Panel for the federal government and was hired by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy to help write their report to Congress and the President. She continues to focus her efforts on developing innovative and entertaining ways to share her passion for the oceans and the environment with others.
About Dave Jones
Dave Jones is a 35-year veteran of the weather industry and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He also served as an on-air meteorologist for nearly a decade in the 1990s at NBC4 WRC-TV, the NBC-owned and operated TV station in Washington, DC. Additionally, he appeared multiple times on NBC’s “Today Show”, NBC Europe, and CNBC Asia. While working for NBC, Dave developed the FIRST television weather website in the nation in 1995, launching a new era in communicating NASA data to the public. The website, “WeatherNet4” positioned NBC4 in Washington, DC, and NBC across the nation as a broadcast leader and early innovator of internet technology.
For several decades, Dave was a co-organizer and host of an annual weather and climate summit to bring together leading scientists and broadcast meteorologists. The summit quickly became a favorite event for broadcast meteorologists at both the national and regional levels. It reached millions of households through related live productions and, later, via social media.
In 2001, Dave founded StormCenter Communications, Inc. Under the Federal Government’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, he and his team developed a unique technology known as GeoCollaborate. This groundbreaking technology allows the sharing of trusted data across any web mapping platform in real-time, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making across various sectors, agencies, and organizations.
GeoCollaborate is being adopted by US Federal Agencies, States, and private sector organizations facilitating more effective decision-making in markets such as military, intelligence, civil agencies, climate resilience planning, energy and transportation, food, agriculture, healthcare, cyber, and homeland security. Dave, a former president of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation), continues to co-chair the ESIP Disaster Lifecycle Cluster. He has recently played a crucial role in advancing Operational Readiness Levels (ORLs) for trusted data to inform decision processes. In 2006, Dave received the ‘Charles S. Falkenberg Award’, an esteemed ESIP-AGU recognition given to an early to mid-career scientist who has contributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities, and planet stewardship through the utilization of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet. Dave was also honored as ESIP’s Partner of the Year for 2020.

Sonia Brubaker serves as both the Chief Resilience Officer and Director of the Office of Resilience and Sustainability for the City of Miami. Her role involves leading resilience efforts across municipal agencies and the community, addressing climate change challenges, and implementing solutions to reduce flooding and greenhouse gas emissions. Her work in creating strategic initiatives, fast-tracking government start-ups, and collaborating with stakeholders focuses on providing equitable outcomes for all related to flooding, housing, buildings, transit, recreational areas, and more.
Prior to this, she directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Infrastructure and Resiliency Finance Center, working with local governments to identify sustainable and resilient financing opportunities for infrastructure.

Daniel Gilford, Ph.D., is a meteorologist and atmospheric scientist with a decade of experience in climate science research. He is scientifically interested in answering the question, “How does climate variability and change affect local coastal communities?” He is personally interested in climate science that works towards an equitable, knowledgeable, and resilient society for his son, his daughter, and future generations.
Daniel grew up along the coast of central Florida, and at a young age became fascinated with the power and importance of weather in his community, especially during the extremely active 2004 hurricane season. Following that passion, Daniel attended Florida State University, where he worked at the Center for Ocean Atmospheric Prediction Studies studying climate impacts on southeast US temperatures and agriculture. After graduating with a B. S. in Meteorology in 2012, Daniel started graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
At MIT Daniel studied with Prof. Susan Solomon and Kerry Emanuel examining how atmospheric chemistry and radiation combine to alter atmospheric temperatures and influence tropical cyclone intensities. Receiving his doctorate in Atmospheric Science, Daniel began a postdoc at Rutgers where he worked with Prof. Bob Kopp to better understand climate change's influence on sea level rise.
In 2021, Daniel joined Climate Central full-time as a Climate Scientist, and he is now working on climate change attribution to support the Realtime Climate and Sea Level teams. Daniel also enjoys reading comics, drinking coffee, board games, and being involved in his local community.

Alex Rivest is an MIT-trained PhD Neuroscientist. Having worked alongside Nobel Prize winner Dr. Susumu Tonegawa, Alex's research has been published in two of the most highly renowned scientific journals, Science and Nature Neuroscience. Alex grew up in an environment where curiosity and question-asking were highly valued, and he has dedicated his life to helping teach others about the wonders of the world. As an educator, he received the Angus MacDonald Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at MIT and founded the nonprofit Blue Kitabu, which built a sustainable primary school in central Ghana. As a science filmmaker, Alex’s videos have accumulated over 70 million views online, and have been featured everywhere, from billboards in Times Square to installations in science museums, and even in an opera production of “Das Rheingold.” CANARY is his directorial debut.

In this podcast episode, we have the privilege of interviewing Rafe Pomerance, an influential environmentalist and climate advocate, as he discussed his groundbreaking work with the Global Warming Mitigation Project beginning in the 1970s. Sarah Newman is the Founder and Executive Director of the Climate Mental Health Network, which she started in Spring 2021. Prior to this, Newman worked in the impact media space for many years, including a stint at Participant Media. During her time in the industry, Sarah worked on campaigns for films such as Contagion, Food, Inc., The Cove, and Heather Booth: Changing the World.
She joins us to shine a light on a global mental health crisis, which is exacerbated by the climate crisis.
According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a temperature increase of just 1°C above the monthly average has been associated with a 2% increase in the probability of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.
Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires can lead to traumatic experiences, resulting in increased rates of PTSD. For example, a study published in the journal PLOS ONE found that Hurricane Katrina led to a significant increase in PTSD symptoms among affected individuals.
Statistics like this are just one of the reasons why Sarah founded the Climate Mental Health Network. Through her work, she discovered that Gen Z is more acutely affected by climate emotions, and set out to provide education, training, and resources to them. She also offers training and resources to teachers and parents, as well.

Inflation Reduction Act Overview
· The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) (poorly named but our big climate plan!) has $369 billion in funding for climate and clean energy, making it the largest investment for the clean energy transition in U.S. history.
o (IRA Helps tame rising inflation by lowering the cost of energy, prescription drugs, and health insurance, and by raising the federal revenue required to both pay for these programs and reduce the federal budget deficit.)
· The IRA aims to build a 21st-century economy by leveraging federal tax dollars to generate $1.7 trillion in investments over the next ten years.
· It includes more than 20 new or modified tax incentives and tens of billions of dollars in grant and loan programs to supercharge our transition to a clean energy economy – creating jobs, lowering energy costs for everyday Americans, and tackling climate change by reducing emissions.
· The IRA is a strong industrial policy and would finally provide the means for America to take control of our own clean energy future–one that does not rely on imports, but instead fosters a homegrown, robust clean energy manufacturing sector. It directly invests tens of billions of dollars–and encourages billions more in investment–to build out domestic clean energy manufacturing capabilities.
· The IRA is projected to achieve historic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, setting the US on course to meet President Biden’s goal of reducing US GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 relative to 2005 levels. It will also achieve historic reductions in local pollutants, improving public health across the country. The US ceased being an international climate leader when President Trump had the US leave the Paris Agreement, and now with President Biden’s return and with a promising plan to fulfill our emission goals, the US can once again become a leader on the international stage.
Family and Household Savings
The massive investments that the IRA makes in energy-efficient infrastructure and technology will lead to significant savings for Americans.
· Save the average household up to $1,000 per year through reduced energy costs.
· Tax credits and rebates for energy-efficient appliances which could create savings of at least $350 per year.
· Savings of up to $2,600 per vehicle per year in reduced maintenance and fuel costs are supported by tax credits for electric vehicles.
Targeted Investment in Low-Income and Disadvantaged Communities
The IRA includes roughly $60 billion in funding to uplift underserved communities and address environmental injustice.
· Disadvantaged communities and communities of color bear a disproportionate burden from pollution. A person of color is more than three times as likely to be breathing some of the most polluted air in the US than a white person.
· Of the $60 billion, a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund will channel at least $15 billion to environmental justice and disadvantaged communities to increase renewable energy deployment, local jobs, and resilience to extreme weather and climate impacts and to decrease pollution in overburdened communities and there will be $3 billion in Environmental and Climate Justice Block Grants to support pollution reduction and climate resilience in EJ communities.
Jobs
The IRA has started the US clean energy economy, creating thousands of jobs. Some quick numbers of the numbers of jobs already announced and projected for the future:
· Since the IRA passage, private companies have announced $64 billion in new investments in clean energy.
· 32% of all EV-related jobs announced since 2015 were announced in the 6 months immediately following the passage of the IRA.
· 101,036 new clean energy jobs were announced between August 16, 2022, and January 31, 2023.
· Opportunity for up to 2.3 million new jobs if IRA investments are complimented by strong federal policy.
· Tax credits in the IRA increase job quality in the renewable energy sector by incentivizing employers to meet prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements.
Coastal Resilience
The IRA invests in climate and coastal resilience, as well as fortifies flood infrastructure to mitigate the impact of sea level rise and extreme weather events. This is particularly crucial for coastal communities, including those in Florida, who have already experienced significant damage from hurricanes and are at risk of losing properties and livelihoods due to rising sea levels.
· The IRA includes $2.6 billion in funding NOAA for coastal restoration.
· Additionally, there will be $500 million for grants through the Safeguarding Tomorrow through Ongoing Risk Mitigation (STORM) Act of 2020
Joining us today is the Ecosystem and Resilience Scientist of the Everglades Foundation – Dr. Meenakshi Chabba. She is here to talk about her advanced knowledge of Everglades ecosystem science and resilience planning for South Florida’s natural and built environment. She is especially passionate about how Everglades restoration -- and decision-making around that restoration -- affects ecological and economic outcomes across the ecosystem. Prior to joining the Foundation, Meenakshi was a Research Analyst with the USAID-funded Disaster Risk and Resilience in the Americas Program at Florida International University’s (FIU) Extreme Events Institute, where she performed economic evaluations of approximately 20 USAID risk reduction projects and was the program’s lead science writer. Meenakshi’s research has contributed to the fields of financial decision-making in risk management, valuation of ecosystem services in policymaking, and the inclusion of sustainability, economic efficiency, and social equity in resilience planning for climate change. Meenakshi has also taught Biology and Ecology at the undergraduate and high school levels. Meenakshi earned a Ph.D. in Earth Systems Science from FIU, a master's degree in environmental studies from FIU, and a master’s in Zoology from the University of Delhi.

The Everglades also provides drinking water to over 40% of Florida’s population and plays a crucial role in the state’s economy. Climate change is affecting the foods we love and need for their nutritional value, including some of Florida’s favorites such as the Cuban Sandwich, fried gator bites, key lime pie, and the Rum Runner. Using foods and drinks like these is an exceptional way to tell the climate change story and get the attention of everyone since we all eat to live. Rising temperatures, how, when, and where precipitation falls, and even the air, which now has 50% more carbon dioxide than in the past, is affecting the availability, flavor, price, and nutritional quality of our food. And getting them to our table is getting more complicated as transportation routes face new risks. The changes happening to our food are unlimited, as are the stories to tell. What is being done to keep our favorites and staples on the menu and what we can all do to tackle the grand challenge of climate change will be discussed.
Michael P Hoffman, Author and Professor Emeritus at Cornell, joins us to tell the story of climate change as seen through its effects on the food we eat. Local governments in the Southeast face numerous challenges and barriers to advancing their sustainability and climate action priorities. This session will specifically focus on how SSDN is helping local governments build internal capacity to achieve climate-related goals, including participating in state-level policy forums and accessing federal funding to resource these activities. Southeast Sustainability Directors Network is a peer-to-peer network connecting over 100 local and tribal governments with the goal to accelerate, scale, and implement sustainability best practices throughout the Southeast region. SSDN speakers will include Ann Livingston (Director of Policy) who will discuss building the capacity of local government to meet climate and energy goals as well as engage with state and federal partners and Michael Dexter (Director of the SSDN’s Multimedia Environmental Finance Center) who will discuss federal funding opportunities and technical assistance offerings to help resource local governments to achieve climate priorities.

Michael is the Director of the Multimedia Environmental Finance Center, a pilot program of the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network. SSDN's EFC helps local governments and the communities they represent in the Southeast have the opportunity and support to access and be awarded funding to advance sustainability and resilience efforts. He provides technical assistance to members to access and apply for federal funding, liaises with federal agencies, and connects local governments with key partners who provide additional support under the Center’s umbrella. Prior to being with SSDN, he worked within local, state, and federal government including at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to oversee a $1.2 billion annual grant program, coordinate agency-wide climate change adaptation efforts, and support disaster preparedness and emergency response efforts.

Ann has consistently taken an entrepreneurial approach to developing and implementing leading-edge solutions to sustainability issues facing communities, regions, and states since earning both a Juris Doctorate and an Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Environment, Policy and Society from the University of Colorado in 2000. She has served as the Land Use Attorney for Environment Colorado; Director, Center for Communities by Design at the AIA National Chapter; Boulder County Sustainability Coordinator; Program Manager for State and Local Engagement at the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP), Principal Planner in Sustainability for Fort Lauderdale; and as a Climate Advisor for the City of St. Petersburg, FL prior to joining the SSDN team as Policy Director. Ann has worked collaboratively with multiple levels of government, utilities, the private sector (including technology firms, trade allies, and financial institutions), advocacy groups, Federal Laboratories, the US Department of Energy, and state energy offices among others. She has served on the City of Boulder and Xcel Energy Task Force (focused on municipalization and alternative partnership options), as President of the Colorado Green Building Guild, as Vice-President of the Environment Colorado Research and Policy Center Board of Directors, and on numerous other advisory boards and work groups. Ann was named as a Person of the Year by the Boulder Weekly (2009), Sustainability Champion (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 2010), and Forty Under Forty by the Boulder County Business Report (2010). Ann is a 5th generation native Floridian—her love of natural Florida inspired her to pursue a career in sustainability and remains a source of motivation today.

Dr. Derrow practiced Internal Medicine in Central Florida from 1986 until his retirement from active practice at the end of 2020. A graduate of The Ohio State University and The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Derrow held leadership positions with Physician Associates and Orlando Health with an interest in population health. Since retirement, Dr. Derrow has been active with Florida Clinicians for Climate Action and believes climate change is the greatest public health challenge we face today.

Shauna Junco is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Adult Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English and her PharmD from the University of Florida. After completing her PGY-1 residency in Hospital Practice at Grady Health System and her PGY-2 in Infectious Diseases from West Virginia University Hospital she moved to Orlando, where she has spent the last 10 years in clinical practice at Orlando Regional Medical Center/Orlando Health, which has earned and maintained recognition as a Center of Excellence for Antimicrobial Stewardship from the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Representative Anna Eskamani flipped her legislative seat in 2018 and was re-elected in 2020. She has declared her candidacy for the Democratic party race scheduled for August 23, 2022. Rep. Quality parks and green spaces are a fundamental requirement for sustaining healthy, equitable, and climate resilient communities. Importantly, natural solutions help people translate climate concern into real, close-to-home opportunities to act on climate. In addition, climate conservation provides a range of other benefits from coastal protection to improving air and water quality to cooling increasingly dangerous temperatures in our communities. During this session, speakers from the Trust for Public Land will use a mix of case studies to highlight the power of natural climate solutions and share lessons learned about how to maximize the climate, health, and equity benefits that these solutions provide. The presenters will also train attendees on how to use a new publicly available geospatial tool called the Conservation Carbon Map. This tool was developed with input from experts around the country and identifies areas with high potential for protecting carbon-rich landscapes. For users in Florida, the map identifies: 1) carbon storage and sequestration by state, county, watershed, and parcels over 100 acres; 2) threats to these carbon stocks from development, disease, and wildfire; and 3) where conservation can deliver additional co-benefits by protecting important habitats, rare ecosystems, and water supplies.

Born in Belleville, Illinois in 1932, Dr. Leroy “Roy” Snyder Wehrle grew up with nature and the environment being a big part of his family. With a rich history involving the economy, foreign and domestic policy, and climate activism, Dr. Leroy Wehrle provides valuable insight on how the economy and climate are linked. With this knowledge, he aims to educate and provide insight to allow others to seek, educate, and lead change for climate change. In 1972, he was awarded a Professorship in Economics at Sangamon State University, now the University of Illinois at Springfield, where he offered one of the first courses in the new field of sustainability and climate change. From 2000 until 2013, he also taught at Millikin University the lead international course in the Master of Business curriculum. After graduating with Honors from Yale University in 1959, where he did his thesis under Professors James Tobin and Art Okun, Dr. Wehrle served as Economic Counsellor in the Loas Embassy and as Deputy Director of the AID (U.S. Agency for International Development). During 1961 and 1962 he served as Senior Economist on the Council of Economic Advisors for President Kennedy. During the Vietnam War, from 1964 to 1967, Dr. Wehrle served as Economic Counsellor to Ambassadors Henry Cabot Lodge, General Maxwell Taylor, and Ellsworth Bunker. He directed US policy to constrain inflation in the war-torn economy of South Vietnam. He was awarded the Jump Award in 1965 for best service of all officers in the State Dept. and again in 1966 for best service of all US government employees. After serving AID in Laos, Dr. Wehrle served for AID in Washington as Deputy Assistant Secretary for South Vietnam. A sustainability and resilience officer’s job is to act as a mediator between businesses, organizations, or governments and the environment or environmental policies. They develop strategies that work with climate change activists and policies. These strategies help avoid conflict, protect the environment, and minimize waste or losses in a world market that is seeing less and less resources. Whitford "Whit" Remer is the first Sustainability and Resilience Officer for the City of Tampa. He is approaching climate change in Florida with three core values, Go Green, Be Fair, Keep Safe. Whit Remer is working with city members to transition the City of Tampa to becoming 100% renewable energy by 2045 and generated a comprehensive roadmap for climate change. With a Super Bowl victory, two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, and a stellar baseball team, Whit Remer is dedicated to “Champa Bay” for the long term and is dedicated to working with city officials to create a long lasting city legacy while also protecting the environment and Florida’s natural beauty. Jon Paul “J.P.” Brooker is a Florida advocate for climate change through environmental law, fishery regulations, and ocean conservancy. Nathaniel “Nat” O. Keohane is the president for the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES). Previously, he served as a special assistant to President Obama, as the senior vice president for the Environment Defense Fund, and as an Associate Professor of Economics at Yale. Keohane provides valuable insight to Congress and other influential members of the community about climate change and the current path that the US and the world takes. Currently, Nat Keohane, working with the C2ES, influences the global stage by advocating for the world and climate. Combining his economist background with his passion for the environment, Keohane speaks and attempts to inform politicians and everyday people about the importance of climate change in relation to economic principles. He has spoken abundantly about cap and trade policies and about the harmful effect of heat-trapping gasses. Congressman Charlie Crist is currently serving Florida’s 13th district. He was Florida’s governor from 2007 to 2011. We all know that extreme heat can be dangerous and that we should keep cool and drink plenty of water to avoid the miserable effects of dehydration. Are you aware, however, that heat has a major impact on pregnant women and healthy birth outcomes? When a woman is pregnant, it’s already difficult to self-regulate her body temperature because her body is working to keep both herself and her baby cool. The number of extreme heat days are rapidly increasing due to climate change. Excessive heat can have devastating impacts on pregnant women and their babies and has been linked to premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, and maternal heat stroke. The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade launched its 2022 public awareness campaign on extreme heat and pregnancy health, putting a gender lens on the issue of heat and how it affects maternal health and birth outcomes, disproportionately for women of color. Jorge "Daniel" Taillant’s admiration and determination to protect glaciers is really only the tip of the iceberg in his battle for climate change. Daniel is a Climate Justice Policy Advisor at the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development, a group dedicated to promote positive influences in societies to protect the environment and create accountable systems of governance. At IGSD, Daniel helps advise the state of California, state agencies, local government and civil society organizations on climate action. He is a co-founder for the Center for Human Rights and Environment where in 2014, he took a leadership role at the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CACC) and is helping the UN coalition to promote the phaseout of climate pollutants such as methane and black carbon. Additionally, he acted as the Chief Strategic Advisor to the Secretary of Environment of Argentina from 2006 to 2008.

Vice-Chairman of the Miami City Commission, Ken Russell was re-elected for a second term in November 2019 and is currently running for US Senate. He is an avid advocate for solutions to climate change. After realizing the need for action within his own community, he stepped forward and began a life in politics. With passions centered around nature, such as professional kite surfing and woodworking, Commissioner Russell realized the importance of using political power to impact the environment in a lasting and positive way.
During his time in the Miami City Commission, he spearheaded the clean-up of Biscayne Bay, addressed sea-level rise and storm surge mitigation, and structured and campaigned for the Miami Forever Bond, which provides $100M in affordable housing and $200M for sea-level rise resiliency.

A conversation on climate, food and equity with Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist, The Nature Conservancy and Rod Braun, Florida Climate Strategy Director, The Nature Conservancy.
Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) is the chair of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, which unveiled its 500-plus-page Climate Crisis Action Plan in 2020 to give Congress a roadmap for solving the climate crisis. Castor is a longtime national leader on protecting the environment and finding climate solutions. In 2019, she was the lead sponsor of the Climate Action Now Act (H.R. 9), the first major climate bill to pass the House of Representatives in a decade. She started her professional career enforcing environmental and growth management laws in Florida, helping protect the state’s coastline, wetlands and endangered species. A Democrat, Castor was first elected in 2006, when she became the first woman to represent the Tampa Bay area in Congress.

Britt Groosman is Vice President of Climate-Smart Agriculture at Environmental Defense Fund, where she helps create environmentally effective and economically sound solutions for working landscapes, including farms, ranches and forests. Her experience spans from reducing deforestation in Brazil to low carbon rural development in India.
This distinguished panel discussed the growing role for Florida’s farms, ranches, and woodlands in delivering high value and scalable solutions to climate change and other pressing global sustainable development goals.
Ernie Shea, President, Solutions from the Land, outlined the work underway in the Florida Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative and moderated the session.
Jim Strickland, Owner, Strickland Ranch, discussed climate smart agriculture (CSA) systems and practices Florida ranchers are deploying to maintain sustainability, improve resilience and reduce GHG emissions.
Dr. Maria Lucia Silveira, Professor, Soil and Water Quality, University of Florida, shared research on nutrient management strategies that result in optimum forage production and profitability, while protecting Florida water resources.
Dr. Carlos Messina, Professor, Horticultural Sciences Department, University of Florida, discussed the evolving role of artificial intelligence in measuring and monitoring the delivery of ecosystem services from farms, ranches, and forests.

Hops, an essential ingredient of beer, are a perennial crop adapted to temperate climates, with more than 90% of production occurring in the Pacific Northwest. Shinsuke Agehara, Professor, University of Florida, shares how they are evaluating the adaptive capacity of hops to Florida’s humid subtropical climate through cultivar selection, breeding, environmental manipulation, and optimization of crop management practices.
The VISTA Award is VoLo’s latest recognition, specific for students who display exemplary leadership, along with Vision, Innovation, Sustainability, Technology, and Action in climate solutions. VoLo gathers proposals from students at the Graduate level who are enrolled full-time with a US-based University or College. The finalist student individuals or teams will be invited by VoLo to present their ideas at their Climate Correction™ conference.
At Climate Correction™, VoLo’s Founders determined the project that best drove positive change in FLORIDA climate solutions. The winning project’s individual or team will receive a $10,000 gift, made out to the University or College with whom they are affiliated, to grow the project’s efforts.
Land Management: Can Cover Crops Contribute to Carbon Sequestration?

Agriculture is in crisis. Low commodity prices, higher input costs and urbanization have made it difficult to make a decent living on the farm. Farming is/has been a significant source of CO2 in the atmosphere. But conversely, agriculture can be an important solution to high atmospheric concentrations by sequestering carbon in soils. Dr. Scott Angle, Senior Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Florida discusses how rewarding farmers for carbon sequestration along with other "ecosystem services" might just be the means to assure profitability and survival.
In May 2021, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava appointed Jane Gilbert to serve as the county’s first Chief Heat Officer making Jane the first Chief Heat Officer in the world! Florida residents are used to the heat, but as climate change continues, we will feel it even more. Previously, Floridians averaged approximately 7 days a year when the heat index would reach 105. By mid-century, that number is expected to rise to 88 days a year. This represents not only a health risk to many, but also has a significant economic impact.
During this episode, Jane shares how they are partnering with all areas of local government to create infrastructure for heat emergencies, plant more trees, and educate the general public about their needs and rights.

The Amazons are the largest rainforest in the world spanning 8 countries and comprising about 40% of all remaining rainforests in the entire world. New species are still being discovered at least once a week, and approximately 300 different indigenous groups call the Amazon their home.
Meg Symington, World Wildlife Foundation Managing Director for the Amazon project shares how they are working to keep a functional ecosystem that provides benefits to people and nature over the long term.
Born at the Conference of the Parties for the Climate Change Treaty in Paris in 2015, the Heritage Colombia Project is an ambitious PFP initiative for the next 20+ years to ensure the conversation of 20 million hectares (1 hectare = 100 acres) of natural areas by increasing the number of protected areas, improving management, and supporting productive activities in areas that connect these important protected regions.
Phase 1 is currently underway with a goal to have 14 million hectares of protected areas and corridors and five landscape mosaics in the Amazon. They are working to raise $100 million in donor funding which will be matched by the Government of Colombia.
The Heritage Colombia Project is establishing the framework to apply this model in other countries of the Amazon and beyond.
President & Founder, American Conservation Coalition, Benji Backer, is a voice for young conservative who want real actionable climate change solutions. ACC is the largest grassroots organization for conservatives who care about the environment and want to have a community of people fighting for climate change. With chapters across the country, they provide people with the tools to be good advocates in their community regardless of their political affiliation. Benji shares that we start by taking small, reasonable, but tangible wins and continue scaling those wins up into larger policies. He notes that there are 3 areas we can focus on immediately where there is alignment on both sides of the political aisle, and discusses strategies for change.
Chisato Fukuda Calvert is Deputy Director of OpenAQ, an environmental tech non-profit empowering communities around the world to clean their air by harmonizing, sharing, and using open air quality data.
1 in 8 deaths in the world is due to poor air quality making this one of the largest public health threats of our time. With climate change, this issue is becoming even more pressing.
OpenAQ is a one-stop-shop for real-time and historical air quality data tracking 7 main ambient air pollutants. By making data more accessible and digestible, they empower local communities to create lasting change.
OpenAQ provides synergy between stakeholders and sectors to bring people together to collectively work together to identify the core issues as it relates to air pollution within the community.

For over 40 years, distinguished university professor and senior research scientist, Lonnie Thompson, has been collecting ice to analyze the effects of climate change. He’s led 64 expeditions conducting ice core drilling programs in 16 countries.
Lonnie shares how he first became interested in studying ice, and how his early failure led to the development of the first solar-powered drilling equipment launching a whole new area of research. The results of these studies have been published in more than 260 articles.
The history of the earth’s climate is recorded in glaciers around the world, sums up what is happening in the environment, and allows us the opportunity to respond to what we are seeing. By studying the data in the ice core, we are able to understand data through the course of time, long before humans were around to record it.

As a high school science teacher, Caroline Lewis was passionate about breaking down complex science into simple consumable nuggets of information. She expanded her work outside schools to design programs that drove youth to ask questions, and help the disengaged become engaged.
Caroline founded CLEO Institute in 2010, and later developed the GenCLEO youth advocacy group composed of students coming together to advocate for environmental justice and climate change solutions. Today’s youth are looking to hold elected officials accountable, and work together to build a brighter future. GenCLEO provides them with the tools, skills, and resources to help them find their voice.
Paul Rennie is the Head of the Global Economy Group at the British Embassy, Washington DC, leading the UK’s climate and energy, economic and trade, and science and technology networks across the United States.
For years, there has been talk about climate change, but there’s never been this level of public support. The US’s renewed commitment to climate change sends a message to the world that this is an issue that cannot be ignored and is coming at a time when technology is ready and able to meet our missions.
Through his work, Paul works in collaboration with the US government, businesses and citizens to address challenges and identify solutions with a major emphasis on improving the economy.
Rep Bob Inglis shares his journey from climate disputer to climate change activist. Following a science committee trip to Australia, he had a spiritual awakening moving him to consciously loving God and loving people and leaving the world a better place for future generations. Upon his return, he introduced the Raise Wages Cut Carbon Act of 2009. Unfortunately, the act was defeated but his desire to continue the conversation was not.
Bob provides insight into how both sides of the aisle can come together to create bipartisan action that is durable. He notes that most people will not accept a problem unless they think it has a solution. As such, he believes it is important to identify solutions that are directly connected to people’s values.
Ken Berlin’s early childhood passion for birdwatching led him to a career focused on the environment, energy, and climate change issues. Ken is the President & CEO of Climate Reality Project and is recognized as one of the top climate change attorneys in the world.
Founded in 2006 by Vice President, Al Gore, The Climate Reality Project is a global organization of world changers working to solve the climate crisis and build a just and healthy future for our planet. Focused on building community support from the ground up, they have trained over 34,000 climate reality leaders between the ages of 12-89 in 169 countries around the globe.
During this episode, Ken shares some major successes, what work still needs to be done, and how a focus on climate change solutions will not only impact our planet but also ensure environmental justice for all while positively impacting our economy.

The Climate Reality Project works to catalyze global solutions to the climate change crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every level of society. Laura believes the best way to bring people together is through building authentic connections, understanding culture and history, and communicating effectively.
These skills are what earned Laura the Green Ring Award which is presented to Climate Reality Leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their role as climate communicators and activists.

Passionate activist Valerie Vande Panne shares her journey covering the war on drugs to becoming an environmental reporter at WGCU Public Media in Southwest Florida. She has also contributed to Bloomberg, Reuters, and Politico.
With a focus on covering marginalized communities, Valerie discusses how environmental racism has a direct impact on these areas. She notes that not only is our planet sick, but we are sick as well. Lasting change involves a level of action on a global scale. Every person, every family, and every community needs to do their part. Valerie implores us to do our research, and make our own determinations for how we can be a part of the solution. As communities, we must come together because when we collectively support something, we have more power.
In closing, Valerie shares the importance of laughter. It’s important to be aware of what is going on around us, it is imperative that we don’t get caught in a negative feedback loop. Find the space to laugh!
Doctors and nurses are at the forefront of seeing the direct correlation between climate change and climate-related health ailments. Dr. Cheryl Holder is the Co-Chair of Florida Clinicians for Climate Action where she works to increase awareness about the impact of climate change on our most vulnerable communities.
Dr. Holder shares stories about the patients she was seeing, and the developing pattern of worsening conditions through no fault of their own. She discovered that the majority of patients lived in poor, under-served communities, and were unable to advocate for themselves. She encourages medical professionals to listen to their patients, understand their environment, and fight for them.
She believes that what we do to help the most vulnerable, we do to serve all of us.
Often, the people that are most affected by the impacts of climate change are those who are already disadvantaged in our society. Adrianna Quintero, Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Energy Foundation, shares what these disparities look like, and how we can advocate for everyone. Adrianna worked with the Biden transition team to ensure that diversity and inclusion were at the forefront of policy decisions with a focus on revitalizing communities and creating economic opportunities.

For years, experts have been predicting how the greenhouse effect would adversely impact our environment. In the 2010s, we really started to see those predictions become reality.
Meteorologist, John Morales, has been serving as a television presence for nearly 3 decades. He’s seen first-hand how tropical storm weather patterns have changed over time as a result of climate change, and shares that knowledge with us. While we aren’t seeing a higher number of tropical storms each year, we are seeing a greater percentage of these storms reaching catastrophic proportions.

Britta was formerly the Director of Advanced Vehicle Commercialization at General Motors, responsible for the energy and infrastructure strategies, partnerships, and policies required to enable the commercialization of battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Britta is also currently a Commissioner for the Orlando Utility Commission, Orlando's electric and water utility.

David Doniger is the Senior Strategic Director of the Climate and Clean Energy Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council. He has been at the forefront of the battle against air pollution and global climate change since joining NRDC in 1978. During his esteemed career, he helped formulate the Montreal Protocol, served on the White House Council of Environmental Quality, and held key posts at the US Environmental Protection Agency.
In this episode, David explains the connection between CFCs and HFCs and the impact they have on our environment. While much work has been done to eliminate the production of CFCs in our everyday appliances, we must now turn our attention to phasing out harmful HFCs.
In December 2020, the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act was passed to phase out HFCs, and charges EPA with issuing regulations and curbing specific uses of HFCs.
David also shares important information on how we can do our part to work toward this goal.
Director of Sustainability and Resilience for the City of Orlando, Chris Castro, shares their mission to accelerate change and global impact by supporting science-based climate change solutions, enhancing education, and improving health. Castro crafted the first community-action plan for the Green Works office. Dr. Marshall Shepherd is a leading international expert in weather and climate and is the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia. He has many accomplishments including hosting The Weather Channel’s Award-Winning show Weather Geeks.
Today, he joins host Shannon Maganiezin in discussing the weather impacts of climate change. He talks about never-before-seen anomalies, such as low-pressure systems in the highest latitudes and 100-year flood events happening annually.
One "at-home" solution he presents is composting. Composting is pain-free and virtually cost-free. Some cities and towns even offer composting bins free of charge. Dawn Shirreffs, the Florida Director of the Environmental Defense Fund, shares the profound climate changes happening right now in Florida.
Unlike other states in different regions, Florida has its own very real and lasting effects due to climate change. With powerful hurricanes and low-lying land, Florida is experiencing an increase in flooding and structural damage to the area.
Shirreffs explains specific needs for the community. More than just science-based reasoning, EDF works with scientists, policymakers, economists, and community representatives to make sure all communities are taken care of.
Florida’s economy will feel the impact too. Shirreffs's data suggests that in the next 20 years, Florida will see a 5-8% increase in electricity usage, rising homeowners insurance costs, and decreasing property values because of climate change.
Shirreffs shares what we can do to have a positive impact on climate change.
Lastly, the two discuss what people can do on an individual level. Shirreffs suggests making smart choices about energy and vehicle purchases and turning down the thermostat. The next step would be connecting with a local organization or contacting your local government representatives to be a part of the solution.
Anne Merwin, Vice President of Conservation at Ocean Conservancy discusses how climate change is impacting our oceans.
With over 15 years advocating for better management of our oceans, Merwin talks about the immediate action needing to happen for significant change. Merwin also shares the direct impact climate change has had in Florida, a state that many say is on the front lines of climate-change effects.
One way climate change has affected Florida is in its septic systems. In Miami Dade County, the septic systems require soil to filter and process waste. With rising water tables, it means there is not enough soil to separate waste. This could lead to massive impacts on the state and tourism economy.
By 2040, the sea level will rise 17 inches in southeast Florida. This equals up to 4.2 billion dollars of property value being lost. More than just a political issue, it’s economic-based, and disproportionately impacts poor communities and communities of color which represent a large portion of Florida.
The real changes are at the government level but can start on an individual level. Momentum building involves talking about the problems and climate changes within your own community which can lead to greater action.

In this episode of the Climate Correction podcast, Shannon talks art, education, and activism with Yoca Arditi-Rocha, Executive Director of The CLEO Institute. The CLEO Institute is a Florida-based organization that promotes change through direct messaging in local communities. Their latest campaign, #FLClimateCrisis, was an ingenious way to capture art and activism for the general public.
Arditi-Rocha explains that it’s important for people to connect the dots within their communities about how climate change is affecting them directly. Each region of Florida is vulnerable, it just takes education to understand the impacts.
Arditi-Rocha lists the many different methods of education and outreach they have done, but one thing remains constant in how CLEO communicates: using data to create simple, consumable pieces of information. This simplicity will help connect in a personal way that many people can care about to inspire conservation and protection.

Episode 1 introduces you to data scientist, David S. Vogel, and attorney, Thais Lopez Vogel, co-founders of VoLo Foundation. They discuss their data and research on climate change with a focus on tying together data, economic, health, and educational impact and research. The Vogels, a husband and wife team, are dedicated to bringing meaning to the numbers and sharing what they find with all Floridians.
With his team's research, David Vogel shares data points to showcase the impact of climate change on a local and global scale. The dramatic effects a two-degree change in our oceans has on our weather patterns and how pollination emissions are affecting respiratory illnesses are just two of the things visibly measurable by data.
Thais Lopez Vogel discusses the massive effects Florida has experienced as a result of climate change that has seen rising water levels in the area. When doing the Climate Correction conference in Florida, she engages in discussions with students and leaders in this space. Vogel likes narrowing in on the solutions. She states, “Don’t give me the problem, give me the solution.”
The show ends with a round-table discussion about technology. The technology that helps our climate already exists in today’s market, and the three talk about how we need to have the awareness and willingness to change our behavior.
David S. Vogel is a world-renowned data scientist and predictive modeler. He has won many awards for his predictive models, including the prestigious K-Cup. His wife, Thais Lopez Vogel, an attorney, manages VoLo Foundation. Together, they are raising six kids. David's research led them to become aware of the devastating economic impact of human reliance on uncapped fossil fuels and other greenhouse gases.
