What if you're already teaching design… but just don't realise it?
In this episode, Stephen Anderson is joined by Dominique Falla from Griffith University's Queensland College of Art and Design to explore a powerful reframe for Design and Technology education.
Dominique shares why design isn't about being "creative," but about structured problem solving—and why every teacher is already doing this every day in their classroom.
The conversation explores the importance of studio-based learning, the role of hands-on experimentation, and why students need opportunities to tinker, test, and fail in order to truly understand design.
A key takeaway is the shift from abstract design challenges to personally meaningful problems. Instead of asking students to solve generic tasks, Dominique encourages teachers to start with what genuinely frustrates students—because that's where real engagement and authentic design thinking begins.
This episode is particularly valuable for teachers who feel out of their depth teaching design, especially those coming from trade or technical backgrounds. It offers reassurance, practical strategies, and a clear pathway to embedding design thinking more intentionally in the classroom.
What if behaviour management isn't really about managing behaviour at all?

In This Episode: We continue our focus on creativity by featuring an inspiring conversation with Steve Muir, a Humanities teacher who is breaking the mold in Hervey Bay. Despite the stereotype that Humanities is all about sitting and reading, Steve is doing things differently. He's using iPads and augmented reality to make history come alive for his students.
What You’ll Learn:
How Steve uses augmented reality to create immersive learning experiences, like giving students a virtual tour of the Colosseum while they walk around the school oval.
Why Steve’s claim that he’s “not a creative person” is something we should all take note of especially considering the incredibly creative work he’s doing.
The importance of embracing creativity in teaching, even when you're not sure something will work.

Over the course of this year I have come to the belief that our subject area if done well is a haven for the generation of creativity, and the concern we have is that when training our teachers there is little or no emphasis on how to teach this creativity or design thinking.
Today, I am talking to Jamie Gerlach from 4C transformative learning and I love how he explains it. Creativity as a process. Creativity is a process, when you think of it like that all sorts of possibilities arise.
Today, I am honoured to be talking to a simply sensational teacher who began her life as a automotive designer and what can I say she is doing some great things for her students. I ran across her on linked in where she was telling of a method she uses to show how important prototyping is when designing. The conversation runs at a few tangents, from the marshmellow challenge to Elon Musk but, I am sure there are some gems in here for you. Prototyping is one of the things, I think many do badly. Megan and I discuss just why that might be. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.
Welcome Megan Detering from Canberra Girls Grammar.
Today, I am speaking with Terri Quinn, now Terri is the program manager for the Technologies Teacher Pathway Program. Today she will share a bit about the program and how she is taking steps to help fix the teacher shortage we have in this state Rosie. If
Right off the back of a very successful Datta conference and quite frankly I am seriously excited about the future of education, I have the pleasure of spending some time with two sensational educators. Scott Millar and Megan King will spearhead a conference in July called the “Future of Education Summit” and you are just about to hear that they base this future on giving our students access to and the ability to practice and use those 21st-century skills. And one of the staples of their methods is design thinking.
Now I do give Scott a bit of a hard time because, well he is just way too young to have the amount of smarts that he is carrying around and you do have to call that out. But seriously, when you realise that the business he is running started as a Business/design project in high school you will see him as a true success arising from our area. I didn’t ask him which school he went to and I should have because it sounds like it could be the next place for me.
So please enjoy this slightly longer-than-usual conversation about the future of education and the summit which is being held at Canterbury College on the 25th of July 2024.
Welcome to the Bridge Building Podcast from Technology to the Trades. I am Stephen Anderson and this is session number 61. Well, it's just one week to go and today I bring you the last two, of the speakers that I've been able to track down for a chat. First up we have Rashan Senanayake talking about one of the conference favourites. One of the hot topics around the world as he puts it, but this time from a different angle. He'll be looking at general AI as it relates to design. Next up we have a teacher coming to us straight from prison. No, that's not true, but she is from the school that has been built on the old Boga Road site at Dutton Park.
And her job this year is to show us how to use one of the most common teaching tools. And one that if we were to be honest with ourselves, we all use pretty badly. Nadiya Sten on using PowerPoint, using it efficiently, and not just for us, for the kids too. Two sensational teachers sharing with our community. You can meet both Rishan and Nadia at exactly the same time, at exactly the same place, one on each day. That is the first session in Room A1 on Thursday for Nadia and Friday for Rishan. This is the last of this speaker series for this year's conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre on the 13th and 14th of June.
We are getting really close now. Just two weeks to go until this years annual DATTA conference and today it is all about engineering. I get to speak to a couple of really smart teachers about the challenges of teaching senior engineering. First up is Philip Canalise who is leading a tutorial on how to use inventor to run all of the numbers and create digital prototypes and second we have Rowan Cahill who will be leading a discussion for teacher of engineering.
Two sensational teachers sharing with our community. You can meet both Rowan and Phillip on the first day and at different times so if you are an engineering teacher you can get to meet them both. I’ll be back next week with the last of the speakers at this years conference at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.
I just love this time of year. Running up to our annual conference I get to chat with some the most passionate teachers about something that is near and dear to their heart. It is invigorating, it is inspirational, sometimes a little intimidating but I wouldn’t miss it for the world. My guest today is Tim Osbourne who fits neatly into the inspirational and mildly intimidating category, is sadly is speaking at the same time as me, so I am looking for a volunteer to carry one of my cameras into the room and record it for me. The title – Design Thinking – It’s the how that puts the power in the process got my mind whirling straight away and then talking to the man I found myself just nodding along, agreeing and an ah ha moment or two. Have a listen, you will hear. At 1.55 on the first day of the conference you will get to see Tim In B3. I’ll be back next week with more of the sensational presenters that will be speaking this year at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.
As I record this, we have about one month to go. It has been and will be my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today I am really in a bit of a quandary because these two speakers are not only had my absolutely rapt attention, but they are both talking at the exact same time and that is also the same time I have promised to attend another presentation. At 1.55 on the last day of the conference there is just a smorgasbord of sensational speakers. And cheers to the committee for doing it because you would have to be a dope to want to leave after lunch like the really unattractive man that sits next to me in my staffroom tries to every year. First, we have Leanne Cameron from James Cook who is going to lead us through the beautiful things we can do with AI that will make our teaching so much better, enjoyable, easier, and exciting. Then we get to chat with Brett Dascombe who is already doing so many of the things we all or at least I dream of doing with my classes. And he tells me he will be bringing some of his virtual reality gear with him. Now these two talks are called How might general AI help you as a teacher and Geography complimenting Design through real world projects. And again, if you are silly enough to leave before the last session you are really missing out. I’ll be back next week with more of the sensational presenters that will be speaking this year at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13 th to the 14th of June.
And remember the 2024 Teacher Excellence Awards are looking for nominations right now so look to your left and look to your right. Because you may be sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. There are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area.
Over the next several weeks it is my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today, we will chat with 2 of these speakers. First is Deirdre Dennys who is leading the workshop Designing spaces for diversity, inclusion and participation: The Corner Cafe Project. Then we spend some time with Andrew Nicholls discussing the two presentation he will be leading on the second day. Design Drawing and then WHS in Design and technology learning spaces. What a great experience it was chatting to these sensational teachers. Deirdre positively glowed when she spoke about her year nine class. Yes I did say that, her year nine class. And Andrew also an architect gets right into the skill of drawing, it is palpable the passion he shows for his craft. We also talked about his presentation on Workplace Health and Safety and it has had me thinking since. You see I did give him a bit of a hard time about the topic which in truth says that I should be the person who most needs to be sitting in that room his, and I will be. I’ll be back next week with more of the sensational presenters that will be speaking this year at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.
And remember the 2024 Teacher Excellence Awards are looking for nominations right now so look to your left and look to your right. Over the next several weeks it is my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today, we will chat with 2 of these speakers. First is Kellie King who is leading a workshop names Design Thinking and the user experience. Then we spend some time with Malcolm Lee discussing his presentation using Lightburn the laser software. Have a listen, hear a bit about both of the presentations and I’ll be back next week with more sensational presenters. At this year’s annual conference at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.

Over the next several weeks it is my pleasure to speak with many of the presenters at this year’s conference and today, only because I am just back in town and my head has not stopped spinning which means I have not had time to organise someone else you get to hear from me. On the Thursday at 1.55 and the workshop is Generating confidence. Have a listen, hear a bit about it and I’ll be back next week with a new and sensational presenter. At this year’s annual conference at the Brisbane convention centre from the 13th to the 14th of June.

Welcome back to week 1 term 2 2024 and today I have Rory Johanson who is leading this terms DATTA teach meet. So if you are in the position that I think most of us are changes are happening and those changes are all around the move from version 8.4 to version 9 of the technologies syllabus which is why we have called this teach meet to be held on May the 15th from 4.30 to 6.00pm Sharing good practice in 2024 looking at the ACARA version 9 syllabus for technologies. So how about we get Rory in to let us know all about it. And just because this is the last time I will be able to say it, this show was recorded at 2am because I got the time difference wrong, on West 123st which is right in the middle of Harlem and on the third floor of a real life brownstone building.
I can’t wait to see you on the 15th of May. Now if you would like to come along, just go to the DATTA website and to the drop down that says PD and that will take you to the Teach Meet page.
My original thought for today was to talk to a young designer about his thoughts on how he see’s design working against the people of New York and a bit about a Google program that he has been accepted into that is training young people to work in that field.
Francis Bazil is that young designer and he is quite simply a very impressive young man, so we did talk about what I was hoping to in the first fifteen minutes or so. Then things started on a bit of a tangent and then another which is why the show today is longer than normal. I don’t think it will come even close to showing you that I have found myself in a completely different universe these last weeks. So if you want to hear some of enormity of this place that is new York the last half may be a fun listen. And I am only going to say this a couple of more time but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park.
Thank you, Francis, it was great fun!
Today, I am speaking with a few experts in the field. What field I hear you ask. The field of knowing just what a great teacher is and who are the best people to talk about what to expect from a great teacher, well students of course. So today I am talking with one of the students from the hive program at the museum here in New York and Francis Bazil who is the hive mentor and a design student at FIT. Now there is a reason for this because in this episode we will be launching the race for the 2024 teacher excellence awards. And these two young experts are going to give us an insight into the type of person that deserves to be celebrated in this way. Because quite simply you need to take note as many of us are sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded. Now there are two awards the Design and Technology teacher of the year and the contribution to design and technology education award for that person who is not a teacher but still does great things for our teaching area.
Just as an aside, Privacy rules over here are similar to home so the hive student is an avatar using empathetically designed name.
Not to harp on the fact, but just to set the scene, this conversation was recorded in Andrew Carnegie’s mansion – now the museum – which is on fifth avenue overlooking central park.
Thank you, Guys, your insights are brilliant!
The show, this first term of 2024 will probably have a different feel to it because quite unexplainably I have been awarded the Queensland Cooper Hewitt fellowship and am spending 12 weeks working at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. My aim is to create an introductory program to design teaching that will compliment the ITD teacher pathway program which is offering a pathway for teachers of other areas to come across to our side.
Today, I’m speaking with Kirsten McNally and Nadia Kim who are two of the educators at Cooper Hewitt and primarily work with teenagers in different programs across the museum. One of their programs is called the hive, A year long program to which students from the New York area apply. From over 300 applications 12 are chosen or in this case they just couldn’t choose, and the number went to 13. Now one of the exciting things is that these kids are from low socio-economic families, so instead of just being accepted to the program they are interned, which means they get paid something like a part time job wage. Many would have had to choose part time work instead of the program if this wasn’t the case. Two passionate young ladies doing great work what a great conversation and just to set the scene, this was recorded in the library of Andrew Carnegie’s mansion - which is now the museum - overlooking central park.
Thank you, Kirsten thank you Nadia, I had a great time!
Today, I’m speaking with Andrew Devoy. Andrew is the well, what we in the department call a head of department technology at the Marist college in Ashgrove and if you were to look back at the list of guests on this show you will see Andrew’s name as one of the very first. There is a reason I want to have him back and that comes down to a very simple question. When I as him what exciting things are happening at you school, his eyes light up, he starts to speak and I can guarantee you there are always several exciting things happening. Today we talk about the future of the opportunities for his students and a new subject, a certificate III in engineering that he is currently building and his passion to share the processes and skills needed to first draw, then produce, and then fly. Of course, if you are going to introduce a new subject it should include a licence to fly, shouldn’t it. I love talking to Andrew, he just makes me feel excited about this job we do, which is of course to help create sensational young people.
Thank you Andy, I had a great time!
Shantell is a Maths teacher and I am going to try not to hold that against her mainly because of what a sensational thing she is doing with her students. She has guided 5 of her students through the building and racing and winning the inaugural - that means first ever - Australian Hydrogen Grand Prix.
Today, I’m speaking with Jamie Lay, Jamie is one of our young design and technology teachers who is stepping up and has joined DATTA and taken the responsibility for managing our design student awards which is what we are going to talk about today, but before we begin, I have just spent my weekend watching some very competitive voung people racing around a track in Nunda for 16 hours over night and finishing at 7.00 am. This competition is incredible to see. Kids working hard to be as good as they can be. Sadly I am not seeing it enough in the school setting so it is great to taslk today about another way your students can excel and get to compete with others from all over the state. And just putting it out there, there are a lot of private schools that get out there and show how great there students are. I think it is time we in the public sector shoud give it a go too.
Thank you Jamie for the chat.
Today, I’m speaking with Tony Grudinski who kinda does the same thing I do, recording information that is, the difference being that his stuff is so interesting that he is looking into using artificial intelligence to publish his videos in many different languages. I am telling you that now because it is something we don’ talk about in our chat and I don’t think he is going to talk about it at the conference either, but I may be wrong. You see Tony is a robotics Guru and that is the focus of his conference presentation and I have to say the passion that just bubbles up when he is talking about what he does just make me want to head down and see him on Thursday afternoon
Thank you Tony, can’t wait!
Today, I’m speaking with Sally Lawrence. Now, she is probably one of those people that would well and truly deserve one of our teacher excellence awards, that is if she was still in the classroom. That is our good fortune cause now she talks to teachers about the 8 ways of aboriginal learning which has an amazing alignment with our design practices. This year her focus is the bunya nut. You just won’t believe how this delicious food fits into the design and technologies curriculum. I reckon you have guessed that I am very impressed by this lady and that is because every time I see her speak I leave with a mind full of ideas.
Thank you Sally, can’t wait!
Today, I'm speaking with Vinesh Chandra now. Vinesh and his co-author, Basil Slynko, are talking to us at this year's conference. You can see them on the first day. My ears pricked up right from the start when I found out that they taught together an eternity ago in one of my old stomping grounds. That's Bundamba and Ipswich many years and many textbooks later, they are here to introduce a new design workbook that has taken a generation of experience to produce, probably perfect for those new to our area, the ones that are coming in from the Technologies Pathways. And to tell you the truth, many of us who are old and perhaps just a little bit stuck in our own ways, you'll be able to join their workshop on the first day of the conference from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Today, I’m speaking with Beth Welden. Now, Beth is talking to us at this year’s conference, and you can see her on the first day. She is talking about our sustainable future using timber and I have to say the few minutes we had together made me realise that I am sadly lacking in my understanding of where our timber comes from and what its influence is. If you are like me this presentation is a must on the first morning of our conference. Thank you Beth, I did learn plenty and looking forward to lots more!
Today, I'm speaking with Mike King. Now, Mike is talking to us at this year's conference, and you can see him on the first day. And if you really want to see, you may have to push me out of the way, because I'll be sitting right up the front, ready to go. Now, over the last few years, he has worked with his students to build some major technology projects, from scrap metal statues to caravans to electric vehicles. This is just a preview, a quick chat to let you know what to expect in just a few weeks time at the Datta conference.
Now, let's have a quick chat with Mike.
Today, I am speaking with Daniel Spat, now Dan is the Queensland chair o the Design Institute of Australia, a working designer at Integral and the speaker at our conference dinner on Thursday evening the 15th of June. Dan is in a rather unique position to talk to what is needed for our kids to aim for a career in and Design. Quite an insightful chat, I know it has me looking at the way I am doing things. Oh before we start don’t forget to look around your staffroom because you may be sitting right beside this year Teacher Excellence Award winner. If you know someone who deserves to be applauded go to the award pages on our website for all the information. Now lets have a chat with Daniel.
Thank you Dan, it was great fun!

Today, I am speaking with Jamie Lay and not to hear about some of the incredible things he has done, though he has done some pretty impressive things. No today we are talking about one of the teachers in his staffroom, the design and technology teacher of the year for 2022, Carol Anne Durkin. Now there is a reason for this because in this episode we will be launching the race for the 2023 teacher excellence awards. And Jamie is going to give us an insight into the type of person that deserves to be celebrated in this way. Because quite simply many of us are sitting right next to someone who deserves to be applauded.
Thank you, Jamie, it was great fun!

Today, I am speaking with Mark McMullin and we are going to chat about a brand new competition pitting schools against schools with the aim of growing fabulous young people who are gaining skills for this new world of renewable energy. But before we get to I, I would like to tell you about it after our chat. You see mark spends an awful amount of time working with these kids outside of school hours to extend them and help them grow and with the craziness of the world we live in, and the profession we have chosen, that fact gets lost. At the end of the conversation, after the recorder was turned off Mark was glowing and he said, “you know I am doing a good thing and making a difference. If you know someone, like Mark who is going over and above, let them know that they too are making a difference. We don’t often get told that.
Thank you, Mark, it was a privilege.
You can listen to it here
Today, I am speaking with two of the organisers of our Qld Pedal Prix events for 2023. We will be chatting about the sport, how it was affected by Covid, how we have lost some of our oldest and much-loved races and how we are moving into the future with a goal to make it bigger and better than ever before. I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did. Thank you John and Graham, I loved every moment of it. Website for more information: https://pedalprixsuperseries.com.au/
Today we are speaking with DATTA Qld Teacher of the year Carol-Anne Durkin. We get to know her some more and suck in the excitement she exudes for this subject area of ours. She actually started teaching design before she left school. As a senior she was writing lesson plans and taking the role of prac teacher at her school. We also get to talk about the things she sees as important for the future of our subject areas.
I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did.
Thanks Carol, for the chat!
Today we ask the question, what would you do with 2 million dollars. Carol Flikweerk from James Nash High in Gympie has been given funding to upgrade the technology facilities at her school. So I thought would be a good Idea to hear just what changes she is going to make and just for the fun of it we invited Corey Gieskens from ferny grove to join the chat and give his thoughts too. Corey is one of the people I look up too in our subject area and his school was upgraded just before he arrived, badly, so he can give us some ideas not to do
I hope you enjoy this, I sure did.
Thanks Carol, thanks Corey for the chat!

Chelsea Mclean is an advocate for and leader in the move towards a change in the way we look at design into the future. The push towards a circular economy is one way to change the direction of climate change and frankly our ability to live comfortably or at all on this planet. Chelsea was the Saturday key note speaker at our conference this year and I have to admit I was expecting a fluffy interview that basically came down to we will need to recycle more. Yep got that totally wrong.
Join me for an eye-opening talk and I hope you love it, I know I did.
Thanks Chelsea, for the chat!
Roslyn Richards is the HOD of Technology at Wynnum State High School and has had the job for nearly 30 years. When I heard that she has over seen the transformation of her subject area I just knew I had to sit down for a chat and hear some of the things that she has seen and just how much things have changed. So glad I did, she is just the type of boss I wish I had.
I hope you enjoy this, I sure did.
Thanks Roslyn, for the chat!

Today, I am speaking with Peter Murphy. Now it seems to be a staple on this show to talk to people who are trying to get more teachers into our area and today is another step along that path. Peter Murphy is ex chair of the DFATTA Australia and now lecturer at several universities teaching design. But most importantly for us has started running a design masterclass for Queensland teachers. This is a program that has been running for a few years in Victoria and I think was the only thing that Victoria had to offer to D&T teachers. Covid made it on line and now we have access to it too. I have signed up for next term and am really looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did.
Thanks Peter, for the chat!
If you want to know more, this is a great place to start. Check it here.
Today, I am speaking with Rowan Cahill, now Rowan is the Regional Co-Ordinator for the F1 in schools north Queensland. Today we will talk about the program and some of the sensational benefits students gain from being a part of it. I hope you enjoy our chat, I sure did.
Thanks Rowan, for the chat!
About the Bridge Building Podcast “This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.”
So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. I would like to invite you along to listen and learn, to be inspired by some of the sensational teachers I speak to on the “Bridge Building Podcast – from technology to the trades”
About the Podcast Host Stephen Anderson is a Design Technology, Trade Training and accidental Science teacher at a small high school 2 hours North West of Brisbane.

Today, I am speaking with Terri Quinn, now Terri is the program manager for the Technologies Teacher Pathway Program. Today she will share a bit about the program and how she is taking steps to help fix the teacher shortage we have in this state Rosie. If you are a HOD looking for staff or a teacher wanting to move across into our field, this is a worthwhile listen. I hope you enjoy this chat, I sure did.
Thanks Terri, for the chat!

To keep this podcast going, I need your help.Today, I am speaking with John Joyce, now John Heads up the Queensland Pedal Prix Super Series. Today, we will be chatting about the 2022 series and all of the great things that are ahead for the competition. It is nearly two years since the kids at my school have had a chance to race and I just can’t wait for next year. I hope you enjoy this chat, I sure did.
Thanks to John, for all he does for the competition!

Today, I am speaking with Jodi Perkins, a teacher from a little town called Wandoen in the south west. Now I met Jodi earlier in the year and was delighted to hear what she is doing. Virtually every other teacher that I have spoken to about design and tech in primary school has said that it is simply to hard. Now that is not the case here. I hope you enjoy this chat, I sure did.
Thanks to John, thanks Jodi for the chat!

Today, I am speaking with John Barnes and Matt Davis from Shailer Park State high and the way they run their vocational programs is just brilliant. With six separate pathways heading for quite specific vocations. The kids are trained well and the local community and industry is loving it. I hope you can take something away from this chat, I sure did.
Thanks to John and Matt for the chat!

Today, I am speaking with ITD course organiser from the only university in Queensland to offer Design and Technology as a component of their bachelor of Secondary Education. Brad Connolly has some exciting news if you know, like I do, a Tradie that would like to teach, but can’t because four years to complete a degree is just way too much time away from a pay packet. I hope you find this as exciting as I did.
Thanks to Brad for the chat!

Today, I am speaking with Monique Dalli. This is the second half of our chat from earlier in the year and we take a deep dive as problem solvers into some of the problems we have in our subject area. We are talking the lack of training, mentors and growing DT teachers. In Monique’s words we need to take narrow and sharp focus to use our problem-solving skills in the turbulent times ahead.
We are in safe hands with this inspirational teacher at the helm of DATTA Australia.

It is not hard to see why. Tom runs an extracurricular program which brings 60 students from all year levels and thirty percent girls back to school twice a week to design and build robots. Working together three of his teams qualified for the world championships last year and two of those teams are back again this year.

Monique is the new President of the DATTA Australia and she is simply incredible to talk to. It is just amazing to see someone who lights when she talks about our curriculum. Our chat lasted twice as long as normal so I have cut it up into two parts. Today we discuss gender in our design workshop and then onto the continued transition to design and technology in our schools. The next part will come later in the term. She is an inspiring lady, I hope you think so too.

Just imagine working with a group of young people who are so keen that they come in for hours every week to work on the coolest project. Simone Buckingham leads one of this type of teams at St. Columban's in Caboolture. An aerospace school that partners with the likes of Air Bus and Boeing with students looking for careers in the industry, what better way to gain skills and make your self stand out from the crowd than building a fully functional aircraft.
18 young people aided by many mentors and teachers are doing just that. It is just so exciting. I hope you enjoy.

Just imagine being given the task to come up with a fully functioning business idea and to make a profit in just ten weeks. This mission was given to a class of 10, 11 and 12 year old students from Ambrose State School and more than half achieved the goal.
Partnering with Startup Gladstone, ideas were generated, designs were created, cost analysis, marketability and on to sales, from cakes to lawn mowers and 3D printed ear savers, this is just a sensational story. I think you will love it.

Starting next year Shaun, he sits next to me in the staffroom and is planning to start a CO2 design program with his year 9s and we asked Keith for his advice on how to do that. You will hear he did just that.
Now this program runs nearly twice as long as my normal, but if you are considering getting into CO2s, I think you will love it.

Today, I am speaking with David Capill, Head of Department Junior Secondary at Toolooa High just South of Gladstone.
David is a primary school teacher stepping up to take on this role and he is just loving it. In particular the ties it has to stem and David hasn’t held back.
In this year, the COVID year, he has involved all five Gladstone High Schools, the Central Queensland University and a major employer from his town in an inter school drone challenge.
Thanks to David for the chat

My favourite busker from the Nanango markets.
Today, I am speaking with Brett Dascombe, a geography teacher at Wavell State High and some of the stuff he does is just sensational.
Why a geography teacher?
Well Brett tells me that one of the careers he is preparing his students for is surveying and that overlaps with us just beautifully.
We will be talking about spatial technologies, story maps, competitions, promoting students' work but the most important thing I got out of it all is that passionate teachers tend to turn out passionate kids.
Thanks to Brett for the chat!

My favourite busker from the Nanango markets.
Today, I am speaking with Rachel Warnes, the head of department ITD at St Columban’s College in Caboolture. Now, one day a week Rachel heads out to the local primary school where she picks up a bus load of grade five students and brings them back for 2 hours of design. While these kids are learning to solve the world’s problems, their teachers are getting an invaluable in-service that they take back to their own classrooms.
Thanks to Rachel for the chat.

My favourite busker from the Nanango markets.
Today, I am speaking with trade teacher from Bundaberg High School Greg Smith.
Greg runs the HPV Super Series which sees 200 human powered racing vehicles compete in 8 races across Queensland.
Now, I though this was going to be a good news story about a new competition starting soon, but it wasn’t to be. It is a talk about how COVID-19 has decimated one school sport this year and the difficulties that lie ahead. Our Kids missing out.
Thanks to Greg Smith for the chat.

In this episode, I am speaking with 3 teachers from my school who have teamed up to guide some very talented students in a project that frankly makes my skin grawl.
They are learning how to grow maggots as a part of a program with the Queensland's Virtual STEM Academy called Medicinal Maggots.

In this episode, I'm speaking with Senior Teacher from Ferny Grove State High School, Carol-Anne Durkin.
I first met Carol a few years ago when she was speaking at DATTA Conference on the Sunshine Coast and she is one impressive lady. And I reached out to see how she did during the COVID-19 lockdown.

In this episode, I'm speaking to the most sensational young lady, Britt Cleary, a Second Year teacher of Ferny Grove State High School.
I contacted her expecting to chat about some great stuff she's been doing with virtual reality in the classroom. But didn't she had a surprise for me?
She is heading up a STEM program where she invited 56 - years 8 and 9 students to tackle some truly outstanding environmental concerns using the United Nation's Sustainable Goals as the basis.

In this episode, I am speaking with an ITD and Trade teacher from Winsolton State High School.
John Joyce has created a bit of a Goliath at Winsolton in a little over 18 months.
He is gone from just learning about HPV (Human Powered Vehicles) to having a fleet of 5 and a team of 50 students competing over Queensland 6 times a year.
Realising that there wasn't a race close enough to his school so he organised one.
