In Episode 91, Brenton sits down with a longtime friend Camden (artist) to talk about the creative process of songwriting. It's something that looks different to everyone, but also has a lot of common ground and similarity no matter who you're writing with.
"Some people know their sound right away... but what it took for me was hearing my voice on a lot of different recordings showing me what my voice sounds good on, and what my voice doesn't sound good on."

John Sherlock is a Nashville based photographer and hair stylist. He stumbled in to the fashion industry in a big way and said yes to some big opportunities that were put in front of him. Without hesitating, John was placed on stages in front of 30k+ people to do something that he didn't feel qualified to, but excelled at.

He pushed through these moments and achieved great success on the other side, ultimately to discover his love for beauty and the human face. Photography became a huge passion and he started capturing moments for all sorts of people. Now, John primarily focuses on wedding photography and still does hair out of his amazing home studio in Brentwood, TN.
Creatives of all types can benefit from John's willingness to just say "yes" and "fake it 'til you make it" mentality. You never know where life can take you when you're a good steward of what's put in front of you.

In episode 89, Brenton and Bryant sit down with Chris Murphy.
From Alabama, to LA, to Nashville, Chris Murphy has been in many different roles in the creative sphere. Starting out as a youth pastor and guitar player, he made the jump to LA to chase a dream of acting and learned A TON in the process. After landing in Nashville, Chris began an online business called Shovel Cloud to teach, coach and encourage entrepreneurs to help them get their business off the ground, offer tips, hints and suggestions to make it easier to conduct business online, and to provide a community of like-minded people.

In Episode 88, Brenton and Bryant share the mic with the incredibly talented Cody Carnes to talk about his new record and the creative process behind it.
"With my debut, I wanted to create an artistic record that was not only music I enjoy and love and that I would be passionate about, but it would also connect people to the presence of God," shares Carnes on his inpsiration for the album. "This album's message is about declaring the hope of Jesus into a hopeless situation. Jesus put death and darkness in its place on the cross."
Cody Carnes is a worship leader whose passion is to create a meeting place for God and people with music. Many will recognize him from his time leading worship with Gateway Worship as well as being on the road and leading with his wife and fellow labelmate Kari Jobe Carnes. With Kari, Cody has co-written many songs such as "Let the Heavens Open" from her Dove Award winning album Majestic and most recently eight tracks off of her release, GMA Dove Award nominated, The Garden.

In episode 87, Bryant sits down with Jeremy Claudio. Jeremy is a new producer/songwriter on the scene in Nashville and over the past 2 years he's been able to work with some of the best writers and artists in the industry. Jeremy's approach to songwriting and production is unique in the sense that his first priority is to help elevate the people around him. This one trait, above all of the talents that he possesses, has allowed him to be successful in many ways in a very short time. He is also the front-man of the band Tiger Drive as well as a writer and artist that specializes in topline, lyrics, and melody.

In Episode 86, Bryant sits down with New Zealand native turned Nashville based producer and songwriter Geoff Duncan (aka Duncan Sparks). Let's just go ahead and say it, Geoff is a legend. From the moment the interview begins you can hear Geoff's creativity come out from his talks of early beginnings as the son of a wooden toy maker and young musician growing up in New Zealand. In episode 85, Brenton and Bryant sit down with Casey Moore. Originally from Memphis, Casey has an amazing story of how he became the lead guitar player for the well-known Christian Band, Leeland. Casey is all heart and he's not afraid to show it. In this interview, they discuss some of the usual guitar playing talk and dabble in some gear, but the majority of this interview is all heart.
Casey isn't afraid to share his thoughts about God and how his relationship with God has gotten him to where he is today. It also influences every part of his songwriting and guitar playing. In episode 83, Bryant sits down with one of Country music's best and brightest up and coming talents, Chris Biano. Bringing real heartfelt lyrics with a modern country sound, Chris has that something the world wants to hear. Born and raised in Texas with country in his blood, everything changed for Chris when he was given a garage sale guitar by his Dad at age 14. He immediately fell in love with singing and writing his own songs. This love eventually lead him to pack up everything and head to Nashville, Tennessee, the heart of country music. After living in Nashville for four years Chris decided to let the world into his journey as an artist. He wanted his fans and others to know how much blood, sweat and tears it actually takes to make it in the country music industry. This idea became known as Breaking Country. In episode 80, the RP crew is live at Evangel University in Springfield, MO with special guest Matt Bronleewe. Matt is an extremely accomplished producer and songwriter from Nashville and share his creative journey and answers questions during the live Q&A about the music industry and creative process.
Matt has been a part of 500+ albums over the last 20+ years. He's also written books, had a song on the hit series "The Walking Dead", currently has songs on the pop and country charts, as well as many more qualifying accolades. He's also an amazing cultivator of creativity. After just talking with Matt for 5 minutes you see that his mind woks differently than the average person. He's a creative.
That's why we wanted to share his story with students who are aspiring to do music or something in the music industry full-time. College is a pivotal time where you learn skills that set you on a course for the future, and in this episode, Matt takes time to encourage and pour into the next generation of producers, songwriters, engineers, and music industry professionals.

In episode 76, Brenton sits down with guitar legend Stu Gerrard. Stu G is a guitarist, songwriter, producer and soon-to-be author. Stu is best known as the guitarist for the British band Delirious?, who, for nearly two decades, penned many of the best known worship songs in modern Christendom. He was also a member of the distinguished CompassionArt songwriters collective, which also boasted heavy-hitters Paul Baloche, Darlene Zschech, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Israel Houghton.
Like countless wannabe rockstars, Stu G’s journey as a professional musician began in his bedroom, learning songs of his favorite bands - Queen, Rush, The Police, and Led Zeppelin. After studying at London’s Guitar Institute, he formed the Stuart David band, lighting up the London club scene in the late 80’s, before rebranding himself as The Treasure Park. Stu quickly emerged as a sought-after session guitarist, which eventually led him to a young Martin Smith, who was leading worship at youth outreach called “Cutting Edge”. The band changed its name to Delirious?, and after seventeen years and several world tours, they singlehandedly reinvented church music and the Christian entertainment-meets-worship experience.
Stu is currently a member of One Sonic Society, with Jason Ingram and Paul Mabury, whose single “Forever Reign” has been a mainstay on the CCLI chart and Christian radio. In 2014, Stu recorded and released his first solo project Of Burdens, Birds, and Stars, citing musical influences as Radiohead, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Manic Street Preachers, Nick Cave, Blonde Redhead and Elbow. When not touring with Michael W. Smith, Stu is writing, recording, speaking, leading worship and working with JHS on a custom line of guitar pedals.
Stu lives in Nashville with his wife Karen, is writing his first book, and is always discovering new ways to express the truths he holds on to. “People are my energy and inspiration. It’s in people that I see why creation was such a good idea.”

In episode 74, Brenton and Bryant have a chat with Jon Guerra. With a penchant for thought-provoking lyrics, innovative instrumentation and pleading vocals regularly wrapped around an entrancing, worshipful undercurrent, Jon Guerra is steadily being recognized as one of today’s most gifted, intellectual and groundbreaking singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists. But just because he’s meeting the world at large with Little Songs(Essential Records) doesn’t mean the Chicagoan (raised in Wheaton, a salt-of-the-earth Midwestern small town) is a newcomer to his craft.
While diligently studying Bob Dylan, Rich Mullins, Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright, along with influential poets Emily Dickinson and George Herbert, plus novelist Marilynne Robinson, Guerra essentially spent his entire artistic journey switching between local band and solo life. He’s been courted by mainstream labels, opened for the likes of .fun, and even served as a jingle writer for massive companies like Comcast, Chase Bank and Allstate Insurance. By 2013, the artist of many associations also became a member of Vertical Church Band, the worship band from Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, where he continues to serve when not on tour.
“I was invited to write songs with Vertical Church Band, and I went on one of their writer’s retreats, though I’d never done anything like that before,” recalls Guerra of the eventual road that led to Little Songs. “I’d done faith-based music - not corporate worship in the way we understand it today - but I figured ‘well, I’m here, I want to help and I’ll try my best.’ It was on that trip that I wrote ‘I Will Follow,’ which first came out as a single on my Glass EP last year and is also on Little Songs. My church really took to that song, and I thought, ‘maybe I can do this. Maybe I can write songs in a way that makes sense to me, while being helpful for people in my church.’”
Like many of his groundbreaking muses, Guerra brings intelligence, passion and originality to every angle of Little Songs, which shows just as many shades of a timeless troubadour as someone with a truly revolutionary approach to congregational contexts. It’s no wonder he’s attracted a sizable listener base within and without the church community, while becoming a recurring favorite for the folks at Relevant Magazine and its massive audience of those thirsting for spiritual authenticity.
“The most personal songs are the most worshipful. For this record, that’s just where it went,” he confirms. “All of these 11 songs are my best effort at being a songwriter, at pleasing God, at giving something that I think is going to be useful to my friends and family in their journey of faith, and something that will be useful to churches on a Sunday morning as they’re trying to engage with God as a faith community.”
Continues Guerra: “For me, art is hewn from my heart, from my personal experience and what happens in those moments of solitude. Every song is written from a very private place, and then it’s also consumed in a very private place, generally speaking. People have their headphones in, people are in their cars and it’s like deep calls to deep in that regard. Some of these songs are written in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. Some of them are written with very dear friends when we’re talking about something and we feel like a song needs to be sung about that subject in a way it hasn’t been before.”
While Little Songs is replete with examples, perhaps the lead single “Nothing Better” is an ideal place to start. Listeners are sure to marvel at Guerra’s vocal gymnastics spanning several different octaves, his unexpected yet suave blend of acoustics and synths, plus plenty of deliciously catchy hooks. “Pop music so beautifully captures a moment. ‘Nothing Better’ speaks of those very acute moments when we experience the love of God with complete liberation and freedom. The song is meant to capture the joy and exuberance that comes in those moments.”
More than any other track on the ambitious album, the ethereal and delicate “Every Little Song” seems to best summarize Guerra’s visions for the collection and it’s clearly no coincidence to find it ranking amongst his personal favorites. “It completely encapsulates everything that I think this record ought to be about. There’s no consistent theme or concept, but every song is an offering and every song is an attempt at writing faith-based material in a way that stays true to the faith and true to my sense of art. And I just love singing it. It’s a fun finger-picking pattern, and I love the melody.”
Thus far, everyone from capacity crowds in cozy clubs to arena-sized audiences on The Rock & Worship Roadshow (alongside Crowder, Matt Maher and more) are agreeing wholeheartedly as Guerra previews Little Songs, which is slated for national release in April. And that’s only the beginning of what’s sure to be a fruitful touring cycle that also includes a summer stretch with fellow Roadshow alum/label mate Maher. However, no matter what the platform, the tunesmith simply seeks to enlighten both Christ followers and seekers alike with creativity and spiritual connectivity at every turn.
“My general goal is the ministry of art, if that’s possible,” Guerra lets out with a little laugh. “For a long time, art and ministry have been at odds, but I don’t think that needs to be the case. I think artists can love their neighbor as they love themselves, while keeping their finger on the pulse of what makes a good song and what makes good art. Hopefully I can say beautiful things, sing beautifully and then let the beauty do its work.”

In episode 72, Bryant sits down with Nashville based award winning producer, composer, and songwriter Jordan Critz. His work has been featured on numerous recordings as well as film and television. Jordan believes that every melody tells a story. His goal in composing and producing is to craft the melodies and music to enhance the story that’s being told by the artist or by the film director.
Critz's classical training on piano and guitar from the age of 8 fueled his love and unorthodox approach for making music. Because of his broad experience in working with many different styles of music, he’s right at home producing a rock band, working on country/folk music or scoring an orchestra for a film.
Over the years Jordan has become a multi-instrumentalist and has toured with numerous artists and played on many records from around the world. His solo artist work has also been featured on numerous popular TV shows.
Jordan’s music has a way of exploring the space between human joy, pain and spiritual wonder.
Music is not just a job for Jordan. Above all he is a purist. His philosophy is to give the songs room to speak for themselves. His end goal is to create the best art possible to help us along in our experience in the wonder, the joy, the pain, the struggles, and the beauty of life.

In episode 64, Brenton and Bryant unpack the creative journey of Matt Bronleewe. Matt is a long-time Nashville based producer and songwriter. Originally from a small town in Kansas, Matt always had a strong passion for music. He grew up playing guitar and listening to 80's hair bands which caused him to be "that guitar player kid" in his small town high school. While in college, he met Dan Haseltine, Charlie Lowell and Stephen Mason. Together the four of them formed the group Jars of Clay, named after a verse in the Bible. The group began performing around their college and later recorded their debut demo album Frail. Following the demo's release, the group's fame spread, and they were approached by Christian record label Essential Records to record a full-length studio album.
Matt was married in August 1994 and lived for one year in Sterling, IL where he continued to work on his studies. In the summer of 1995, Matt was invited to reenter the world of music when another Greenville College student, Sarah Jahn invited him to play guitar for an independent CD she was recording, and later asked him to play guitar for her full-time. Matt moved to Nashville, and played with Jahn as well as pursuing other avenues of song writing and record production. Bronleewe had become known as a previous member of Jars of Clay as the group had rightly credited him as a co-songwriter for several songs from their album, which had gone platinum. With this, Bronleewe worked with several musical artists, most notably producing the debut album by Plumb, for which Jars of Clay member Haseltine co-wrote the song "Concrete" with Bronleewe and Arbuckle (the lead singer of Plumb). Following this successful release, Bronleewe collaborated with Christian singer-songwriter Chris Tomlin, with whom he was nominated for a 2003 GMA Dove Award. Bronleewe continues to collaborate with various musicians in the American Christian music scene such as Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Kari Jobe, and Leeland. Outside of the Christian music genre, Bronleewe has worked with artists such as Australian Natalie Imbruglia, actress Hayden Panettiere, former Tonic frontman Emerson Hart and American Idol finalist Kimberley Locke.
After building a name for himself in the music industry, Bronleewe turned to the literary world. In August 2007, Bronleewe released his first book, Illuminated. The thriller conspiracy novel has been likened to stories such as The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure.
n 2009, Bronleewe joined Dan Haseltine and Jeremy Bose to form a new band, The Hawk In Paris. The band released a seven song EP, His+Hers, in 2011 filled with melancholy love songs reminiscent of 80's synth-pop groups like Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. More recently, Matt has created a new venture under the name "Unsecret Music" involving some of the best songwriters and artists Nashville has to offer. ⏪

In episode 63, Brenton and Bryant discuss the importance of celebrating even the smallest of wins. In football, imagine if there were no first downs. Everyone would be launching massive passes and trying to run 100 yards on every single play. It would be madness, and no one would hardly ever score. So, why do we set ourselves up that way as creative people? When we don't celebrate the small victories, we forfeit the opportunity to see and appreciate our progress along the way. ⏪
In Episode 62, Brenton and Bryant take a reverse look into the life of artist, songwriter, and producer, Audrey Assad. Audrey is the daughter of a Syrian refugee, an author, speaker, producer, and critically lauded songwriter and musician. She releases music she calls “soundtracks for prayer” on the label Fortunate Fall Records, which she co-owns with her husband. She is also one half of the pop band LEVV, whose debut EP peeked at #17 on the iTunes Alternative chart.
Her first solo album was released by Sparrow Records and was awarded the iTunes Christian Breakthrough Album of the Year in 2010 as she went on to be nominated for two Dove Awards. That same year, she sang her song “Winter Snow” on Chris Tomlin’s certified Gold record “Glory in the Highest.” In 2013, Audrey set out on her own. Thanks to a devoted and tight-knit fanbase, she raised over $40,000 in 50 hours for an independent record on Kickstarter. The resulting album, Fortunate Fall, received many accolades and quickly became a fan favorite- with songs such as “I Shall Not Want” being featured in the New York Times by David Brooks.
In 2014, Audrey released an EP, Death, Be Not Proud, which reflected on her recent encounters with loss and suffering- including her husband’s journey through cancer and chemotherapy. The album released just a few weeks after the birth of her first son.
In the time since, Audrey has spoken about art, faith, womanhood, justice, and, most notably, pornography addiction at Catholic and Evangelical events such as Q Ideas, Focus Conferences, and more. She has performed many solo worship events, as well as at the IHOP One Thing conference with Francis Chan speaking, Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral with Timothy Cardinal Dolan presiding, and alongside Matt Maher during the Papal Event “World Meeting of Families.” She has also written reflective and devotional entries for the likes of Christianity Today, the Magnificat, Blessed is She, and more.
In 2016, Audrey is releasing a collection of hymns and original songs called Inheritance. She has approached this collection of songs with a sense of delicate appreciation balanced with artistic integrity. In an effort to highlight the beauty of the hymns, without trampling them underfoot, she has crafted a highly unique soundscape through a cinematic-styled approach. Working with co-producer Daniel James (Canon Blue, Joy Williams, Among Savages), the rich, lush textures and wide, expansive rhythms allow Audrey’s voice to glide effortlessly over a diverse landscape of prayerful contemplation. In the album’s quite moments, Audrey’s signature piano playing and pure vocal tone create a familiar and calming place for the listener.
Audrey grew up learning to sing in a Plymouth Brethren community. “I was raised in a church where we didn’t use any instruments on Sunday mornings,” she notes. “I learned to sing there, from the old hymnbooks, in four-part harmony, with my family and my neighbors. It was multi-generational, it was deep and rich and beautiful, and like most of my favorite worship music, it was steeped in community.” The record blends these influences and infuses them with a truly modern sensibility—Inheritance is Audrey’s endeavor to honor her roots and, inspired by them, craft something fresh, fragrant, and new.
One original song that should not go unnoticed is “Even Unto Death,” which was co-written with Matt Maher after Audrey heard of yet another martyrdom in the Middle East. “I thought of the many martyrs around the world, but especially those in the Middle East, and wondered to myself what would be running through my head if I knew my life was about to be taken because of my faith,” Audrey explains. “And so I began to write the song that became ‘Even Unto Death,’ praying for the martyrs and hoping for even a shred of their courage. That’s something I would want to sing about on Sundays.” Lover of my soul even unto death, with my every breath I will love youshares the chorus of the song, both fragile and confident—two words that happen to aptly describe Assad’s personal faith.
Audrey sums it up this way: “I knew that Inheritance had to be much more than me going into the studio and simply doing pretty renditions of hymns we all know and love. I couldn’t be satisfied with that—I had to make something both bright and dark—colored honestly with my own doubts and weaknesses, so that the Lord who inspired these songs could be even more visible in it. Inheritance is an offering I am humbled, privileged, and challenged to make—and I pray it will be a gift to anyone who hears it.”
In 2016, look for Audrey leading these hymns across the country and in Europe, speaking and writing for many outlets, partnering with organizations like World Relief, The Society of St Vincent de Paul, and Adore Ministries, and releasing even yet more music through her various projects. As prolific as she in honest, Audrey Assad is poised for a very big year. ⏪

As creatives, it's easy to get your eye off of the goal and not achieve what you originally set out to accomplish. It's easy to get distracted and not ever reach your full potential. In Episode 59, Bryant and Diego talk about the importance of owning it. There's always a temptation to give an unnecessary insecure disclaimer when sharing your art with others. Creating art is vulnerable. There's no way around it, unless you're creating from a place that's not real and not authentic. It's easy to get "demo-itis" where you treat everything as a "demo" and don't really put your full 100% into each project. Create like you're giving everything you've got and don't treat anything like a demo. ⏪

In episode 50, Brenton and Bryant have the opportunity to sit down with Brandon Bagby. Brandon, originally from Louisiana, began playing guitar at the age of 14. The self-taught guitarist landed his first “pro gig” playing guitar for Vertical Music / Integrity Music worship artist Jason Morant in 2004 at the age of 21. Brandon finished college with a Bachelor’s Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in late 2005. Questioning his next steps, he moved into a corporate career setting. At the same time, Brandon played in bars and churches in the local Baton Rouge and New Orleans community.
In May 2009, Brandon made a career change and decided to finally move to Nashville, TN to pursue a full time career in music. Since moving to the “Music City,” Brandon has had the pleasure of hitting the stage with artists such as All Sons & Daughters, Cory Lamb, Know Hope Collective (an Audio Adrenaline worship project), Meredith Andrews, Seventh Day Slumber, SHeDAISY, and many more! Brandon is diverse in playing styles such as country, motown, pop, rock, rhythm & blues, and contemporary worship. Whether it’s teaching music theory, how to read number charts, scales… to preparing for an audition, ways to learn songs quickly, or even getting the right tone; Brandon’s goal is to bring his students to a pro playing level!
“I don’t just want to teach an average guitar lesson… I’d prefer to mentor and pour into the lives of my students! When I began playing guitar, I wish I would have had someone helping and guiding me to the profession.”
Brandon is also a visual artist. Though Brandon has only been painting seriously since July 2009, he uses very mature impressionistic techniques through the use of palette knives. Most of Brandon’s art exemplifies his never-ending passion for music, though he is beginning to explore other avenues of subject matter in his art.
In some of his works, you can definitely see an influence of New Orleans styled art. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise knowing the artist spent a portion of his life only sixty-four miles outside of The Big Easy. Brandon graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in December 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, focusing in Graphic Design. He said that, “while in college, I took only one painting class which was required for my curriculum. Sometimes I wish I would have studied more about painting, but then again, I wonder if I would be painting in a more restricted fashion.”
You will find that Brandon piles on large amounts of paint with palette knives on large canvas panels. Photos alone do not bring an ounce of justice to the rich textures of this artist’s work. Brandon’s pieces are definitely a “must see” in person. Many clients say that photos just don’t do the work justice! ⏪

In Episode 49, Brenton and Bryant unpack the idea of "output before input". There are a lot of sayings that would emphasize the opposite, saying that you need to pour in to yourself before you can output. While sometimes this is true, sometimes you have to be the initiator. If you'r having a bad day, there's a good chance someone else is, too. If you want people to pour into your life, sometimes you have to pour into theirs first. ⏪

While Garrett began his career playing in the backdrop of worship movements across the country (Zoegirl, Jeff Deyo of Sonicflood, Lindell Cooley, two-time Dove Award winner By The Tree), he has since transitioned fluidly through the musical world. Most recently, Garrett has spent the last eight years as the drummer for Carrie Underwood. He's also performed live with Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith; on Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, The Grammy Awards, The American Music Awards, The People's Choice Awards, Billboard Awards, among others.

Ideas are a must, but the art of simplicity says "less is more" and challenges us to use our best ideas rather than try to make all of them work. For example, a really great song should still be a really great song in the simplest form. There can sometimes be a temptation to overcomplicate things, and it begins to water down the content or the message we are tying to convey through what we're creating. ⏪

In episode 44, Brenton and Bryant are joined by an up and coming artist on the scene in Nashville, Fleurie. Fleurie (pronounced 'flur-ee') is the musical brainchild of Lauren Strahm. Lauren is from Canton, Michigan but has acquired a few hometowns over the past few years, including Sydney, Australia and Nashville, Tennessee. She has been writing music since age 11 and sharing it with people since age 17. Fleurie is a word of French origin, meaning "in bloom." Lauren's vision for Fleurie was a sound to match her songwriting: raw, honest, and expressive. With much help from a few very talented musician friends, Fleurie was born. Fleurie is a sonic blend of organic layers and cinematic melodies. ⏪

As creatives, it's pretty typical to have your hand in about one thousand different things at any given time. Add that to the fast paced world that we live in, and you can get stuck in a perpetual cycle of a crazy non-stop life. Sometimes, the most difficult thing to do is be still. If we never take a moment to be still, collect our thoughts, and take a break from the noise, we won't be able to create from that deeper place. The world is already noisy enough. Let's take time to be still and more than just noisy art. ⏪
In Episode 38, we unpack the journey of Thomas Dulin. Thomas currently spends most of his time on the road touring as a FOH engineer and tour manager. He's toured with such acts as Ben Rector, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, Ingrid Michaelson, Colony House, Third Day, and many more. He is also a Nashville based producer and has worked on many different types of projects both with local artists and others from all over the US. After sitting down with Thomas for 5 minutes, you can tell that he's a super genuine guy with a heart for people and making great art. Everyone's journey looks different. If you try to copy someone else's journey your'e never going to fulfill what you were meant to do. Every time we set out on a journey, there's always a struggle that happens. It could be as simple as the fact that you don't feel like going. Or maybe you have a few really discouraging days. Maybe you're not making any money and you can't survive. The list goes on and on, but you're not alone. The "struggle" that we're talking about is a part of the journey and always has been. Anytime you set out to accomplish something, it's not really a question of "will there be struggles?" The question is who are you going to be and what can you do in spite of them. ⏪
Hope earned her bachelor’s degree in Cinema-Television and immediately moved to Los Angeles post-graduation to begin her career in production. She started at CBS Studios and eventually worked for various TV production series for ABC, CBS, and TV Land.
Hope then moved to London to expand her passion for storytelling by getting behind the camera and interviewing fellow travelers on her journeys from Marrakech to Reykjavik.

Keith Everette Smith is a Grammy and Dove Award winning producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and teacher and a member of TobyMac's Diverse City Band. If there’s one thread that comes through everything he does, it’s that he’s good at seeing potential, envisioning where to go and helping lead people there. He is an activator.
Smith is a lifelong trumpet player whose understanding of music, recording and performer development positions him as a sought after session player and arranger. As a producer, Keith has a track record of success both within and outside of the church. Keith has served on staff at churches like Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, TN and Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA. Tasha Layton Smith is a pastor, worship leader, and professional singer who moved to Nashville from Los Angeles after 10 years of working simultaneously within the church and music industry. She has been a voice for various productions such as Disney, Nickelodeon, and Cirque de Soleil, and toured as a backing vocalist for international recording artist Katy Perry for over 4 years. She was recently featured in T.C. Helicon’s “The Ultimate Guide to Singing,” and has been fortunate enough to sing behind artists ranging from Tristen Prettyman to Dionne Warwick. She is a vocal coach and teaches worship theology and voice at Trevecca University.
Tasha holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Religion and a Master of Divinity and has been involved in various missions project around the world, having traveled to close to 40 countries. She desires to compel others to stand for justice on behalf of the disenfranchised and powerless.

J. Warner Wallace is a cold-case homicide detective, adjunct professor of apologetics at Biola University, Christian case maker and author. J. Warner was a conscientious and vocal atheist through his undergraduate and graduate work in Design and Architecture (CSULB and UCLA); he always considered himself to be an “evidentialist”. His experience in law enforcement only served to strengthen his conviction that truth is tied directly to evidence. But at the age of thirty-five, J. Warner took a serious and expansive look at the evidence for the Christian Worldview and determined that Christianity was demonstrably true. After becoming a Christ follower in 1996, Jim continued to take an evidential approach to truth as he examined the Christian worldview. He eventually earned a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
J. Warner served as a Youth Pastor for several years, then planted a church in 2006. Along the way, he created and built the Cold-Case Christianity website, blog and podcast as a place to post and talk about what he discovered related to the evidence supporting Christianity. Jim has appeared on television and radio, explaining the role that evidence plays in the Christian definition of “faith” and defending the historicity of Jesus, the reliability of the Bible and the truth of the Christian worldview. Jim also speaks at churches, retreats and camps as he seeks to help people become confident Christian case makers. J. Warner’s first book, Cold-Case Christianity, provides readers with ten principles of cold case investigations and utilizes these principles to examine the reliability of the gospel eyewitness accounts. In his second book, God’s Crime Scene, he investigates eight pieces of evidence in the universe to make the case for God’s existence.
J. Brenton was on a tour bus at a young age with his Father, who sang in a Southern Gospel quartet all throughout Brenton's younger years. Taking a day off can be the hardest thing to do for some people. For others, taking a "day on" would probably be a better idea. But if we're looking at our week in Reverse, we have realized how important it is to rest. In order to stay inspired and stay creative, we have to give our brains a break and just chill.
Some might say, "I don't have the time to take a day off", but we're not saying that. You must MAKE the time to take a day off. It doesn't happen by itself. It's a choice. If you're hitting a wall, losing your creativity, or feeling tired, take a day off! It will not only help you creatively, but I'm sure the people that are closest to you will really appreciate it as well.

Contrary to what you might think, his last name really is Frankenstein. Jeff is the keyboardist, music director, and 22 year member of the Christian Rock Band - The Newsboys. Jeff moved to Nashville to join the band in 1994 and has been with them ever since. Why do we create? - The WHY behind the WHAT
As creative people, we're always looking for inspiration. We need to constantly stay inspired in order to create things that inspire others. Last week, we discussed what creativity is, but once that is established we find out quickly that there has to be something else in the equation. The best creative ideas come from a deeper place than just off the top of your head.
The best creative ideas come from people that create with purpose. The "why" is even more important than what is being created. This looks different for everyone, but if we look deep inside of ourselves we can find that thing that drives us and keeps us creating.
The "WHY" behind the "WHAT".
What is your "Why" and how does it affect the way you create? There are people from all different walks of life that create from all different versions of "why"? What's most important is finding what that is for you and chasing it with everything you have. The world would be a boring place if everyone's "Why" was the same. Find you passion, find your calling, find your purpose, and get out there and create something that will change the world.
In Eposide 6, we dive into the creative process with Chris Bartels. Chris is an extremely talented producer, songwriter, and mix engineer based in Minneapolis, MN. We had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss some of his current projects, his songwriting process, the gear he uses, and how he stays inspired. If you've ever had thoughts about giving up on what you love, you're not alone. We all tend to struggle with some form of insecurity as artists. It's natural. The way we handle that insecurity determines the future of our work and who we become as creative people. WHAT IS CREATIVITY?
What does it mean to be a creative person?
Isn’t that just one of those “different” people that keep to themselves?
Dictionary.com defines creativity this way:
“the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination.”
Such is creativity. It’s more than an idea or a “different” personality. It goes beyond what you do and what you find yourself working on at any given moment. It’s who you are. It’s a lifestyle that isn’t defined by anything or anyone but YOU. The ability to “create meaningful new ideas” is not something that can be purchased or taken from a box. It comes from within. It comes from the deepest part of you that longs for something new. Something fresh. Creativity can be the most exhilarating, satisfying, and fulfilling place to live, but it can also be the most difficult, isolated, and quiet place you’ve ever known.
You’re not alone. We, just like you, have been through the highs and lows of the creative life. Like us, I’m sure you’ve endured many sleepless nights wrestling with unsettled thoughts, and you’ve also experienced many successes by tapping into your creative genius. Enter the idea of “Reverse”

Webster's Dictionary defines the word "potential" as - capable of being, but not yet in existence. This definition alone can best describe the life-journey of Calvin Nowell. Pursuing purpose and destiny has been the path Calvin Nowell has taken for most of his life. Knowing it was there but not understanding how to manifest it was the question he asked for years. Eventually, he decided to start somewhere.
On this path, there were a few obstacles that presented itself. One of the biggest hurdles Calvin has overcome was his struggle with his weight. Calvin unfortunately weighed over 450lbs. At six foot four he was displaying a 60-inch waist and a coat size of 64/66L. Although he weighed a lot physically, the emotional weight seemed to outweigh the pounds. Fear and insecurity were the driving forces behind his struggle. However, there was always an inner knowing that he wasn't going to be overweight if given the chance to record a CD. After losing over 215lbs and many layers of emotional weight, Calvin has started somewhere on the journey to share his experience with everyone. "I always felt that God told me that he would bless whatever I put my hands to, but I had the problem of not putting my hands to anything.
At the core of the title cut, "Start Somewhere", co-written and produced with veteran producer Mark Heimmerman, the theme of procrastination runs throughout the song. "It is a message that I believe every person can benefit from. I have a real desire to see people lose the weight that is holding them back, whether it is physical, spiritual, or emotional. We all have an appetite out of control that is ultimately weighing us down Hebrews 12:1 says it best, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." "One thing that I tell people is that I lost the weight from the inside out and not the outside out in." With a heart and passion for pursuing the presence of God, a deeper relationship with Christ was the only way out of Nowell's struggle.
What seemed to be his misery has amazingly evolved into ministry. Calvin began leading worship throughout his journey and has developed a special knack for worship. With the musical influences from Fred Hammond, India.Arie, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Calvin has developed a unique cross-cultural sound. Since the door of "potential" has been opened, Calvin is a gifted singer/songwriter living in Franklin, TN. All of the songs from Start Somewhere were co-written and co-produced by Calvin. He has toured and recorded with some of today's top artists and worship leaders including, Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen, Israel Houghton, Katinas, Livingston Taylor, Helen Baylor, Vicky Yohe, Geron Davis, and Lynda Randle. Calvin has appeared on many television and video outlets including, ABC's Good Morning America, TBN's "Praise The Lord", TCT Alive, Pax TV, The Dove Awards, Michael W. Smith's Worship DVD.
Outside of music, Calvin is a professional motivational speaker and workshop facilitator. Calvin has appeared on national television shows with Dr. Don Colbert (Celebrity health professional/author) as his special guest. Calvin has spoken at major corporate arena events highlighting his weigh loss testimony. Calvin has received endorsements from other celebrities, such NBA player, Allan Houston; National recording artist, Kirk Whalum; National recording artist, Nicole C. Mullen, Producers Mark Heimmerman (dc Talk, Michael W. Start Somewhere, his debut EP mixes heartfelt worship with elements of Pop and RB. Nowell consistently proves to be one of the few worship leader/songwriter in modern times with the ability to cross multiple music genres and generations while retaining true authenticity at each one. "There are many styles of music that I write and sing. However, I choose to display the various different sounds but use the same theme of worship." This project features the mainstream inspirational song, "Truth and Start Somewhere", worship ballads, "Unrestrained and Open My Heart" as well as Calvin's personal testimony that has inspired millions. There's only one quote that can best sum up Calvin's journey and it is from St. Francis of Assisi, "Start with what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you're doing the impossible." Peter James has been playing piano/keys for the last 25+ years and of those the last 10 years professionally as a musician, session musician songwriter, instrumental/film-score composer as well as touring with various local and international artists. He's been involved as a keyboard player on a whole range of live and studio albums and has had the privilege of working as a session musician for a bunch of amazing talented artists and producers over the years.
Over the past 10 years he's been heavily involved with Hillsong Church as a volunteer on the weekends as well as being employed by Hillsong United and Hillsong International Leadership College as a lecturer.
