Some stats say that up to 80% of medical bills have errors! With healthcare more expensive now than ever, it's important to understand exactly what you're getting charged and to understand how to argue it if you disagree.

In this episode, Valerie talks about how she successfully argued her healthcare bill. She provides tips on what to do if you believe you had a billing issue on your claim. Also, is there anyway to prevent confusion?

Like I’ve said before on the show, I do work in healthcare, and this is in no way affiliated with the work I do there.

In this episode, Valerie talks about how she got into real estate investing, why she likes it, and gives 9 tips to those also wanting to get into it.

It's been a highly effective tool in my financial independence journey. It's taken a lot of money mindset work and research to get into it, but I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far. If done strategically, real estate investing has the ability to have long-term benefits (including generational wealth).

I'm not a financial professional, so this isn't financial advice. Please consult pros before you make any major financial decisions.

Keeping things simple can be challenging when the world is making you feel like you need so much. Now that the pandemic is winding down (hopefully), it's a time to reassess how we spend our time. Obviously, so much is out of our control, so how what can we do to embrace simple living.

On Fridays I try catching up on paperwork that needs to be done personally and professionally. I also try to do some self care and clean up to get ready for the weekend.  I have so many conflicting priorities and get overwhelmed/distracted so easily, so I love the 15 minute timer hack. It helps me get things done but also make time for myself. Who doesn't have a spare 15 minutes to get something important done (even if it means taking time to just relax and listen to music).

I vow not to make this podcast one of the hustle business type shows that makes you feel like you need to constantly grind in order to make money. Instead, let's focus on creating through art, allowing yourself to read fiction, listen to music, read poetry, or whatever makes you feel like a human!

Creativity is the foundation of business and money making. I've never found that hustle and grind type of podcasts make me feel more creative, but instead I experience the opposite effect.

Whether you're an entrepreneur or not, it's beneficial to utilize legal services proactively. A way that makes it more affordable is by using legal insurance.

Valerie used it for her estate planning recently, and saved about $1k. She also doesn't think she would have done it without the insurance. We all sign contracts on a regular basis, and it's a good practice to have attorneys look over what you're signing (housing contracts, job offers, car purchases, etc.)

Although this sounds a little like an ad, it's not sponsored.

We recommend carefully understanding the plans' exclusions before you commit to signing up for the plans. Valerie's plan doesn't cover business related expenses.

Whether you call it an MLM, pyramid scheme, or network marketing, everyone has opinions on this type of business. I am personally very hesitant to recommend this type of business model because the data shows that the vast majority of business owners make minimal money (if any at all). Lots of women want to work from home, and it's easy to get sucked into the promises of an easier lifestyle (at least as social media shows).

Our guest today, Sheryl Scott has some experience with MLMs, and she has had some positive experience. She shares red flags to look for and talks about specific questions you should ask when you're considering joining one of these programs.

This is a super short mini episode where I give you an update on where the show's going.

I'm also strategizing what topics and content to feature for the rest of the year.

Some of these topics include:

  • Making more money (Who doesn't want that!?)
  • Getting unstuck
  • Incorporating some "fun" episodes - I'm not sure what that means yet.

I'm also considering uploading more often to my YouTube channel.

  1. Find a mentor, but don't listen to everyone
  2. Be intentional about dating. This will impact your future so much.
  3. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You'll be working for years, so don't burn out in your first few years as an employee.
  4. Ditch perfectionism. You're not "getting graded" anymore, so stop trying to get 100% scores.
  5. Be authentic - You don’t have to act like a robot and be serious all of the time. In fact, if you listen to this show regularly, you know that having fun and using humor actually helps you at work. It helps your brain be more creative and makes for a better work culture altogether.
  6. Show Confidence - It’s true you need to fake it until you make it, but you also have to show confidence while you do it.
  7. Be a participator - Go to events, participate in fund raisers, company team builders, take on new projects, etc.
  8. Keep a positive curious attitude. If you’re someone with a million interest, that’s great. It means that you’re an interesting person. So go into each day trying to be as curious as possible. That attitude will help you no matter what role you’re in.
  9. Really specific tip - Young Valerie, don’t cash out your 401k! Start saving and investing now!
  10. It’s just a job, it’s not your identity. It's all going to work out. Just breathe.

STAYING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE Physical activity is any body movement that works your muscles and requires more energy than resting. Engaging in regular physical activity is a mood lifter; it is like a happy pill and health booster with no side effects! Research showed that short bouts of exercise throughout the day have the same benefits as continuous workouts. A few tips on how to sneak in some extra movement into your day: • Walk while on phone calls or stand up when taking calls. • Stand up while using the computer work if possible. • Do simple toning exercises while working; Take Stretch/Walk Breaks. • Move while waiting for your food to cook; Move more during lunch. • Park further away. • Take the stairs.

It's important to be strategic when looking for a new role.

  1. You have to figure out what you want to do and find those job descriptions. Don’t waste your time looking at job descriptions of jobs that you really have no interest in. Also be realistic. If you’re an entry level worker now, it probably doesn’t make sense to take the time reading through VP roles.
  2. Research the company (Glassdoor and LinkedIn)
  3. Prepare your resume. Be sure to tailor these specifically to the positions that you plan to apply for.
  4. Complete your cover letter and apply. Try not to provide salary history information, even if it's requested.
  5. Network within the company.

In this episode, we talk about specific and actionable ways to make more money and land your dream job.

Our guest today, Claudia Miller started her career like many people do: in an entry level role, not loving her job, and barely making any money. But unlike many of her colleagues at that time, she wasn’t willing to settle. That’s when she started making some surprising discoveries. Within 12 months, she went from feeling “meh” about her work, to breaking into an amazing management role, getting multiple promotions and repeatedly negotiating $30,000 salary increases each time. She stopped blindly climbing the corporate ladder, and instead became the architect of her own career success. Claudia has been interviewed in Forbes, and named one of the "Top 23 Most Innovative Career Coaches of 2020" by Business Insider.

We talk about:

  • How to prepare for year end reviews to position us to make more money?
  • How we can take control of the future of our career instead of just waiting for a manager to tap on our shoulder to give us a promotion.
  • Claudia's career journey and how she learned how to excel in the corporate environment

I've been asked "how do you do it all?" a couple times lately, and wanted to give a thorough answer. Hopefully this helps give you some ideas on ways to make your life a little easier.

  • I have lots of help! We have a nanny and sometimes have people help us clean the house. I also have a spouse that never sits!
  • If you must cook, only cook once a day.
  • When you do cook, make double portions and freeze half for another day
  • Invest in an Instant Pot and Deep Freezer if you can
  • Ditch perfectionism - it's not your friend when it comes to creating things
  • Give up some creature comforts (TV watching and sometimes sleep)
  • Have a strong sense of why you're doing what you're doing
  • Cut down on time driving in the car if you can

Madeline Schwarz thinks communication is so important that it shouldn’t be referred to as a "soft" skill because it's essential.  She was once criticized by a boss for being too quiet, so she joined Toastmasters and overcame her fear of public speaking.

Overcoming that fear changed her life for the better and opened so many doors for her. She now teaches others how to do the same.

In 2020, 6.7% of American households have millionaire status. What do they have in common?

Here are 8 things you can do today to start acting more like a millionaire:

  1. Know your financial numbers. Even if it's scary you have to know where you are.
  2. Take control of your fees (think about gyms, cable, etc. that you're not using)
  3. Ensure that you're learning and growing at your current job.
  4. Learn about investing. I recommend some podcasts like Afford Anything, So Money, and Bigger Pockets Money to learn more about reaching financial independence. (Spoiler alert, you’re gonna hear a lot about index funds!)
  5. Analyze the risk in your life and do what you can to reduce it. Do you have health insurance? Car insurance?
  6. Stay open and curious. Listen to people and think about opportunities. If you’re not learning anything in your current job, what can you do to change that? Can you ask for more responsibilities or do you just need to change your job entirely?
  7. Think about a new income stream that you can pursue. Can you save some money for a rental property? Maybe you just need to open an index fund or contribute to your 401k if you’re not already.
  8. Remember that time is limited, so if you can stop trading cash for time then you’ll be more like the rich dad then the poor dad.

Jules recommends musicians in L.A. take on as many gigs as possible and do a great job, because you never know what connections you’d make!

There are many different paths for musicians including the traditional symphony route. L.A. has so many options.

Jules is part of a startup called Rhapsody

  • Contractors can send hiring emails, manage communications, generate rosters and export payroll forms.
  • Contractors can have a live view of their orchestra and can send out calls until the orchestra is full.
  • It saves lots of time and stress from both the contractor's and musician's perspectives.

The impact from COVID has been really tough for musicians financially. Here are a couple ways you can help:

  • Buy merch from your favorite artists

We talk about parts of Kelda's political platform:

  • Pay inequality
  • State Infrastructure
  • Supporting entrepreneurship
  • Cost of childcare
  • Free tuition for 2-year colleges

Maria looks for the following soft skills in new hires: resiliency, persistence, curiosity, kindness, and a love for working with children!

There are lots of opportunities for growth in the childcare industry!

Measures of success for childcare teachers include:

  • Meeting safety standards - the most important (and non-negotiable) achievement
  • Effective interaction and communication with children
  • Accurately identifying children's interests and needs. Can the teacher identify what the child is interested in? What are they curious about? What do they need?

We talked about what education is necessary:

  • A bachelor's degree in childcare is not necessary. An associate's degree is really valuable! The center has staff from a variety of backgrounds.
  • There is a T.E.A.C.H. scholarship available in some states. In Wisconsin, you have the option to get a leadership credential as well!

Leap Academy has a strong set of core values. Valerie recommends identifying what your personal core values are as well (link to a good resource is below).

COVID was a challenge for Maria:

  • She had to adapt quickly and support parents in different ways (i.e., offered a course, preschoolers could pick up activities, created a Slack board, etc.)
  • It ultimately made Maria a stronger leader who could adapt and be decisive about what needed to be done.

Meet AdenAden's Nepom's goal is to bring joy to people she interacts with. The daughter of a self-improvement author, Aden found herself struggling to choose a career path. After a few false starts, she decided that the common denominator among her many interests was that she liked problem-solving and helping people.

She joined her father's business, called Art of Change. He developed tools and techniques to have better workplace experiences and improve communication. His goal was to reduce stress (and ultimately disease).

Playfulness
Aden draws from her background in improv comedy to help clients solve problems creatively and flexibly. She emphasizes the need for businesses to allow for pivoting, shifting strategies, and being open to change. Playfulness will help you get there because it helps open your brain to see things in a different way!

Aden has let go of the need for stability which has given her many freedoms. She doesn’t recommend it for everyone, but it works for her.

Take ActionHere are three ways that you can try today to start seeing the world differently today:

  • Relax and remember to breathe!
  • Try brain exercises like pointing to objects and saying another name for one minute.
  • Check your mantra before you join a meeting. Try something positive like, “I’m going to offer so much value.”

In this episode, we set the foundation for creating a future-proof career.

I am so happy that Lizzie Brayton (an English teacher, podcast host, reiki practitioner, and Extraordinary Life coach) agreed to be the first guest on FPC! In this episode, she provides insightful guidance on how to find peace in times of uncertainty.

Some key points are:

  • If you wear many hats in your life, a planner is absolutely necessary. She also recommends a gratitude journal to help instill a mindset of abundance.
  • Meditation will help you find your true purpose and allow you to look within. Lizzie recommends joining an in-person group to get started.
  • If you want to make some big changes, you have to start by developing inner-strength and confidence. A foundation of self-love will help get you where you want to go.
  • Lizzie was in a situation where she could have been laid off from her teaching job. She did the best work she could and just realized you can’t control the future, but you can control what you bring to the situation.
  • Lizzie recommends ditching self-deprecating humor and being careful about what we allow in our minds.
