From the work of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera to the Covid-19 pandemic, mutual aid has long been key to trans survival. To find out what trans mutual aid looks like today, Imara speaks with organizers Asanni Armon and Tuck Woodstock in this episode replay from 2022. First, Asanni explains how party-based organization For the Gworls is disrupting conventional approaches to fundraising and aid distribution for Black trans people. They discuss how their approach to crowdsourcing and collaborating with traditional non-profits has changed over the years. Next, Imara talks with Tuck Woodstock about the Gender Reveal mutual aid and grant program. They highlight the role of trust, frustration, and joy in this work, and the impact that a few hundred dollars can have amidst the systemic failure of the state.

There are few things more policed in life than sex and sexuality. For lots of trans folks, learning to embrace themselves as sexual beings is a journey all its own. But it can also be healing and affirming. In this pursuit of pleasure and liberation, many trans folks embrace kink. In this episode replay from the summer of 2022, Imara invites BDSM educator and sex worker advocate Ze R to talk about kink, gender, and what it looks like to embrace your kinky side as a trans person.

Disinformers ultimately want their narratives to filter into trusted sources where they can almost imperceptibly begin to shift public opinion. In this episode, Imara dives into how Christian Nationalists have successfully made The New York Times—arguably the world’s most powerful news organization—into an agent of their views. The fact that they have done so is a degree of success beyond what they could have hoped. And the way that anti-trans ideas have embedded themselves at the paper has wide ranging impacts on trans people as well American democracy overall. Join us as we learned how this happened through the voices and stories of former and current New York Times staff.

Various parts of the right wing disinformation machine effectively work in tandem to elevate junk science and platform people spreading anti-trans hate. In this episode, Imara takes a deep dive into the inner workings of this world by following the rise of Abigail Shrier, a woman who rose quickly from obscurity to become a so-called expert spreading the myth of social contagion. We'll explore how she packaged these concepts in ways that was ready made for Christian Nationalist media, especially Fox News. And how they were accompanied by a mainstream appeal that’s had a devastating impact on parents and kids.

Imara takes a look at what’s going on in the state and how advocates are fighting back. First, she speaks with organizer and educator Adri Pérez about their experience being arrested and sustaining a concussion at the Texas Capitol. Next, she’s joined by advocate and mother to a trans child, Rachel Gonzalez. Imara shares a new podcast that TransLash listeners are sure to love: Sounds Gay.
In this mixtape of documentaries, host Sarah Esocoff takes you to rap battles, mosh pits, and songwriting sessions. It explores non-binary identity through emo music and trans history through a lost VHS tape. Sounds Gay tells stories of queer people whose lives have been transformed by music.
In this episode, Sarah learns about a videotape made by a trans woman in the 90s called Melanie Speaks. In the tape, Melanie offered tips for trans women looking to change their voices. Hundreds of women used the tape, but then it, along with the woman who made it, disappeared. This episode asks: how did Melanie help a generation of trans women find their voices? And who was she?
Imara celebrates the release of Artistics Legacies, a short documentary film featuring the Black Trans Femmes in the Arts (BTFA) Collective. First, she’s joined by BTFA Founder and Executive Director, Jordyn Jay, who opens up about the organization’s journey from a small meet-up to a powerhouse of Black trans art and creative community. Next, Imara talks with musician, photographer, and advocate Iman Hill about the evolution of her persona, music style, and approach to documenting her chosen family in the house/ballroom scene.

The Biden Administration has proposed a change to Title IX that would prohibit schools from categorically banning trans students from sports teams that align with their identity. But many advocates have criticized the new rule, pointing out that schools would still have leeway to discriminate based on exceptions around competitive advantage and risk of injury.
In this episode, Imara unpacks the pros and cons of this new rule. She speaks with Andy Marra, the Executive Director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), about the proposal’s potential impacts on trans student athletes. Imara also chats with Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, Executive Director of GLSEN, about their public comment campaign urging revisions to the rule and the need for more clarity on its anti-discrimination protections.

Disinformation must spread in ways that are imperceptible and seemingly organic. Join us for Episode 3 of Season 2 of the Anti-Trans Hate Machine for a deep dive into the massive influence of the fringe blog 4th Wave Now, where parents who are hostile to their trans kids gather to spread conspiracy theories about the origins of gender identity. It’s influenced liberal parents like Jeanne Ogden, who used ideas in the blog to help justify blocking her daughter Cam from receiving the care she needs. Learn how Jeanne and Cam are working to pick up the pieces, after being manipulated by this disinformation. And how, despite the harm, journalists like Jesse Singal grabbed the idea of trans social contagion and ran with it.

In this episode replay from 2022, Imara discusses how the idea of Black civil rights has been reduced to the idea of changes in specific laws. But the civil rights movement also included the ideas of what we now call Black liberation: a specific revisioning of what our society should look like steeped in racial justice. Consequently we can see that the civil rights movement never totally succeeded and has a tremendous amount of unfinished business that we live out every single day.
That’s why we wanted to talk with Black trans leaders about what a new agenda for Black civil rights should look like. Our first guest, Qween Jean, is the founder of Black Trans Liberation. She’s an activist and artist who’s critical work centers Black trans people in the fight for racial equity. Then Imara talks to Kayla Gore, the co-founder of My Sistah’s House, a fully fledged aid and advocate organization that started as an emergency shelter with 8 beds.

Hours after the tragic Uvalde Shooting, dangerous rumors began to circulate online that the shooter, Salvador Ramos, was transgender. These falsehoods led to online harassment of trans people and to an assault on a trans teen in Texas. But these acts of virtual and physical hate violence don’t happen in a vacuum. There is an active and vibrant ecosystem on the Internet that is designed to weaponize beliefs about our community, and exploit actual tragedies, in order to create support for pushing trans people out of public life entirely. We wanted to understand this underreported part of the Anti-Trans Hate-Machine, its dark, unseen underbelly. Imara Jones sits down with Sydney Bauer to unpack it all.

There are few things more policed in life than sex and sexuality. For lots of trans folks, learning to embrace themselves as sexual beings is a journey all its own. But it can also be healing and affirming. In this pursuit of pleasure and liberation, many trans folks embrace kink, and that’s something we wanted to explore on the show this week. So we invited BDSM educator and sex worker advocate Ze R to talk about kink, gender, and what it looks like to embrace your kinky side as a trans person.

Recently, swimmer Lia Thomas made history when she became the first known transgender athlete to win a division I National championship in any sport. Predictably, the blowback has been intense. With so much conversation again focused on trans athletes, we wanted to bring you an episode we did last year that features two groundbreaking trans athletes telling their own stories.
First CeCé Telfer, the first openly trans woman to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association title, joins Imara to discuss her historic win, how the attacks on trans girls in sports is rooted in anti-Black racism, and how she continues to follow her passion despite the backlash.
Plus, Chris Mosier, the first openly trans athlete to represent the US in an international competition, comes on the show to discuss his career and the importance of making space for other trans athletes. And, for our moment of Trans Joy this episode, we celebrate Luca Page who started RadicallyFit, a gym that centers queer, trans, POC, big bodied and fat identified people.

We’re coming up on Valentine’s Day. This can be a difficult time for trans people, because the love our culture celebrates on that day so rarely reflects us. So this week the TransLash Podcast invites two incredible guests to talk about the power and the freedom to be found in T4T (Trans For Trans) love, sex, and relationships.
First Imara talks to artist, producer and trans woman Zackary Drucker. In 2016, she coauthored a book with her ex partner Rhys Ernst called Relationship. It’s a deeply intimate look at two trans lives undergoing radical change, and their relationship with each other in that moment. Then you'll hear from author and essayist Britni de la Cretaz. Britni wrote an essay for Catapult called “How Queer Sex Liberated Me” about their journey finding sexual freedom and fulfillment through sex with other trans people.

It was supposed to be a reality show with a twist. In a sun-drenched villa in Ibiza, six hot guys compete for a cash prize and for the love of the beautiful and mysterious Miriam. It’s meant to be her big break: the moment she becomes the superstar she was born to be. But this is the era of “cruel reality TV” and the show producers have a different goal: they want to surprise the men with the fact that Miriam is trans. A new six-episode investigative series from Wondery, the makers of The Shrink Next Door and The Apology Line, and from Novel, HARSH REALITY is the story about love, lies, reality TV and a woman before her time: Miriam Rivera. Written by Agnes Borinsky and hosted by Trace Lysette.

In the opening episode for TransLash Media’s riveting new mini-series, our trusted award-winning journalist Imara Jones introduces us to a key component of the anti-trans hate machine through a historic case: Hecox v. Little. She walks us through the introduction to HB 500, the law that made Idaho the first state to ban transgender athletes participating in sports, and the investigation that quickly followed suit. We hear from aspiring college athlete Lindsay Hecox, as well as Ritchie Eppink, the Legal Director of the ACLU of Idaho, and Chase Strangio, Deputy Director for Transgender Justice, who aided her through her case. And Imara receives an unexpected surprise when Idaho Representative Barbara Ehardt, the sponsor of the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act (HB 500), takes her call. In the end we learn about the organization behind these bills, a far-right group called Alliance Defending Freedom.
