Back in 2020 Caroline Churchman worked at a care home and had dreams of taking her fitness business full-time. By the end of the year, she had done exactly that and I was privileged to see this transition in her life as she had used the Supercharge Your Website Membership to build her website and launch online. A year later I asked caroline to come onto the podcast and share with us how she did it and the challenges and rewards she has experienced since. You'll hear the common story from this series about following your passion, how it's never too late no matter where you think you are in your life and the lessons she has learned about running a service-based business. If we've learned anything from the past two years, it's that it's possible to move a business that required you to help people in-person fully online. We have had the tools for a few years but the intent had never been there...until there was no other choice. This is where this week's guest Emma Last, from Progressive Minds found herself at the start of 2020 as her coaching and training business was grounded as we all locked down. In this episode of Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners she shared how she moved the business online to begin The Human Reboot Movement and the challenges she overcame to do that. We also chat about Emma's background in corporate training and what led to her becoming self employed in the first place. You'll hear all about Emma's passion for helping women leaders find peace after burnout and what moving online with her coaching and courses has meant to her and the women that she helps. If you have an in-person business and still can't figure out how to make it work online, you'll enjoy hearing about Emma's journey. Welcome to this episode of the podcast, which is part of a series we're running at the moment called 'Inside the Business, where I talk with business owners about their day to day challenges running a business in the online space. Collette Stevenson from postgrid.com joins me for a second interview and you may remember her from a previous episode of the podcast where we chatted all about what makes a great website design.
Since then she has managed to launch a business called Postagrid that she had no plans to do when we last spoke so you'll hear all about the whirlwind year she has had getting it up and running.
When we chatted, she was just about to launch, so you'll hear all about what it's taken for Colette to get to that point plus a bit about her history as a reluctant entrepreneur!
As usual, make sure you subscribe and leave a review if you really liked the episode!

Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners is back with a new series called "Behind the Business" where I chat with new and familiar faces in my community about what it's taken for them to grow their business online. In this first episode of this 10-part series, I chat again with Sarah Latham, owner of Friends and Canine Dog Treats.
I first interviewed her when I launched this podcast back in late 2020 and she had just ditched her job to take the business full time.
It felt right to start this series with Sarah and check to see how her year has been. She has had so much success but also new lessons to learn and she lets us into what growing her business beyond the shaky start-up stage has been like.
You'll hear about the Challenges with running product business during the pandemic and Brexit, the decisions about how big to scale and we also chat about the day to day stuff too.
I hope you enjoy the episode - we'd be delighted to hear what you think in the comment below!
Back in 2018, I knew I wanted to help teach small businesses and not build websites for a living, and I happened on a course that showed me how to create a course. During that process met my friend Cat Archer Underwood, known back then as The Brandologist. Cat was aiming to try and do the same mass reach of her branding services to small businesses and as I was with website owners and although have gone down slightly different paths, our big goals have remained the same of wanting to help educate. However, over the past few years, we have both "pivoted" in our businesses. In business-speak "pivot" often means to change the direction of a business when you realize what you're doing isn't meeting the needs of the market. I stopped trying to push a marketing course I had my heart set on selling and Cat did the same as a branding consultant and become a course creator instead. In this episode, we talk about what pivoting means to us and when it might be best to persevere rather than pivot in a business. If you are wondering whether to continue down a particular path trying to reach a certain audience or pushing a certain product or service in your own business right now, this might be the conversation you need to hear! On this week's episode I'm talking to Dr Hannah Gibson, former biologist turned website copywriting expert to geke out on what makes copy convert and how website owners can go about writing their own sales copy. Hannah runs a monthly free webinar helping business owners write better copy. Sign up to her next free masterclass here: https://hannahgibson.kartra.com/page/Masterclass
In this episode of the podcast, I'm talking about how to manage "the juggle" during the summer holidays - the pressure of running your business while the kids are around. I'm fairly new to all this as it's only the 2nd summer holiday I've had to deal with and certainly don't have all of the answers, so I reached out to various members of my audience to find out how they do it. You'll hear about what I'm doing this summer plus thought-provoking responses from the contributors. Even if you don't have kids, you'll get an insight into how I'm running my business over the next 6 weeks and if you do, you'll pick up plenty of tips and tricks plus hopefully make yourself feel that little bit better that we're all in this together! This week on Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners, we're going for a trip down memory lane back to the year 2019. Over the past 2 years, I have helped hundreds of business owners build their own WordPress website using my WordPress website build 'bootcamp' course. It's my step-by-step methodology for building client websites that take students through how to buy hosting, a domain name, get WordPress set-up and then build their site using an easy-to-follow page builder plugin. The course, now know as The Website Builder, is one of the things I am most proud of because I know what impact it can have on a business owner thinking "can I make money online?" Some of my first students have gone on to have massive success with their websites since then like Sarah from Friends and Canines Dog Treats, and Sonya from The Brighton Ballet School. Their websites act as the chief marketing and sales tool in their businesses, being home to their business information and a place where their ideal customers can pay for the products or services. During the initial round of the course, they got full-on hand-holding and support to get their websites live and now they're shining examples to other members in my paid Membership group with what they can achieve, as both managed to survive the pandemic and make money during that time. You'll hear all about why I created the course and what it was like for business owners taking part. Along the way you'll learn about the step-by-step process that I teach and pick up whether you could build your own WordPress website too. In this episode I refer to the following sites: Friends and Canines Dog Treats: https://friendsandcanines.co.uk/ (https://friendsandcanines.co.uk/) The Brighton Ballet School: https://brightonballetschool.co.uk/ (https://brightonballetschool.co.uk/) To join for one month and get access to the Website Builder course is just £79 per month. Once you've joined you get so much more than lessons on how to build a website and drive traffic to it (although that is pretty awesome). One member said, "it’s not the kind of group that you join to learn “something” and leave. There’s always something new to learn, grow and stretch those boundaries to create an even better business." If you've read enough and want to see what it's all about, then head to the link below to sign up: SIGN UP HERE: https://superchargeyourwebsite.com/membership-sign-up/ (https://superchargeyourwebsite.com/membership-sign-up/) We'll close this early access on Friday 21st May, so grab the opportunity now while you can.
Welcome to this episode of the Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website owners, where I talk to a selection of business owners about how they manage time in their business. Time management has always been something that I've been interested in working as a digital project manager in my corporate past. I managed teams of designers, developers, copywriters, marketeers, all to create and deliver a project on a particular date and within budget. Understanding how long tasks will take to complete was something I had to continually study and review as team members dealt with tasks and the time it takes to do them differently. You can't just sit down and say to someone, okay, go and do these things off you go because there's a psychology behind understanding what the task is and how long it's going to take. I know a lot of my designer and creative colleagues were always really frustrated when the client would ask them to come up with something creative in 24 hours. You can't just ask someone on the spot to come up with something creative. There's a process, the right energy and the right environment to spur creativity and motivation on. Not much has changed in the world pf project management since then. My new clients - small business owners - have the same challenges as my team did back then except they're doing all of the things in their business including website management and marketing. How much time does it take to do all of those things and what's the priority? How can small business owners ensure that they spend the time on the right things? I ask a selection of business owners to give us their insight in this episode as well as outlining my own techniques. You're going to get some hints, tips, and gold that you can take away that will help you understand how you can prioritize the things that you're doing in your business, manage your time better, and actually want to do the tasks that you need to do. In this episode you'll hear from: Tina Lancaster, Handheld Marketing: https://handheldmarketing.co.uk/ (https://handheldmarketing.co.uk/) Caroline Churchman, Health and Fitness Hive: https://www.healthandfitnesshive.co.uk/ (https://www.healthandfitnesshive.co.uk/) Paul Green, The Cockpit Method: https://www.thecockpitmethod.com/ (https://www.thecockpitmethod.com/) Dr Paula Redmond, Psychologist: https://drpaularedmond.com/ (https://drpaularedmond.com/) Rachel Larkin, NutriBalance: https://nutribalanceuk.com/ (https://nutribalanceuk.com/) Carol Fare, Marriage Counsellor: https://carolfare.co.uk/ (https://carolfare.co.uk/) Dr. Louise Tondeur, Author of ' A Small Steps Guide to Goal-Setting and Time Management: https://www.louisetondeur.co.uk/ (https://www.louisetondeur.co.uk/) Kate Stewart, Factory Floor Jewellery: https://factoryfloorjewels.com/ (https://factoryfloorjewels.com/)
I am a big fan of how PR can help you raise your website's visibility online and have seen first-hand what great PR has done for some of the members of the Supercharge Your Website Membership. Former journalists turned PR pros, Michelle and Christian Ewen have spent decades writing stories that have been featured in some of the UK’s biggest newspapers – including The Guardian, The FT, The Telegraph, The Mirror, The Sunday People and The Evening Standard and now they help small businesses find high-profile PR opportunities. Having seen these two at work, walking the walk getting PR for their own business, I was delighted that they accepted my invite to come and chat on Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners. We chat about how the publishing and PR industry has changed over the years, how to marry what you are doing with your website SEO to leverage PR opportunities and I manage to get some real gold from them about what it takes to pitch the perfect story to a journalist.
If you have been putting off trying to score some high-level PR for your business because you think it's out of your remit, take a listen.
Back in 2020 I attempted to write 30 blog posts in 30 days knowing that consistent blog writing could help improve my organic search traffic from Google. I only managed to get to 20 posts done in that month, but there has been a lasting effect from the organic search traffic that I get to my website. I learned so much from the process that I've decided to do it again, but this time with a twist! In this episode you'll hear about my history as a blogger and my top tips for writing blog posts. You'll also hear more about this crazy scheme that I have planned!
In this week's episode of Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners, I make myself accountable for getting my YouTube channel properly started after a few false starts over the past few months. While I'm talking YouTube (and my obsession with it), I also share some useful tips that you can apply to your own YouTube channel to get it seen by more of your ideal customers. If you don't have a YouTube channel, then hopefully by the end of this episode you would have been so swayed by my enthusiasm with the platform that you'll set up a channel for yourself as a way to drive more traffic to your website and get seen online that little bit more by your ideal customers. Welcome back to the podcast! I had a week off last week so that I could rest my voice after the Supercharge Your Website Challenge and also welcome all of the new people who joined the membership from the back of that. We're focusing on SEO in the membership this week and so I thought it would be good chance to chat with you on the podcast about the basics that you need to implement on your website so that it can be seen and understood better by Google. On-site SEO, according to moz.com, is "the practice of optimizing elements on a website (as opposed to links elsewhere on the Internet and other external signals collectively known as "off-site SEO") in order to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic from search engines." In short, it means how you name your pages and files, how you order them, and what content you place on them in order to make your pages understood by your users and by Google. In this episode I'll cover a list of 8 things you can focus on and my hope is that by the end you'll have one or two things you can go and action straight away! timestamps 00:08 Intro and why there was no podcast episode last week 02:17 The definition of "on-site SEO" 07:23 Why titles matter so much to Google and to your users 13:12 How to name URLs and slugs so that they are SEO friendly 18:53 Why your content matters so much to Google and how to optimise it 22:18 How many times should you add a keyword to your pages? 23:42 The ideal number of words for your page 24:42 Why readability is so important 26:32 Links, menu structure and being useful 32:38 Get rid of those broken links! 34:40 Image alt-tags, what they are and how to name them for optimal SEO love 39:21 More on meta descriptions 42:39 How to test your site for being "mobile friendly" 46:44 How to build trust with your users (and with Google) 51:06 Why you need to set-up your site with the Google Search Console links mentioned in this episode: https://moz.com/ (moz.com) https://www.megamenu.com/documentation/mega-menus/ (Mega Menu definition) https://yoast.com/ (yoast.com) https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly (https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly) https://search.google.com/search-console (https://search.google.com/search-console)

In this episode, I talk to small business owner Sarah Latham who I met back in 2019 when she looking to transition her natural dog treat business from a Facebook Page to a website. She talks about the process of setting up and growing her business over the past 18 months and what it has taken for her to do that.
I met Sarah just at the point she had decided to build her website and we talk about why she decided on WordPress as opposed to any other platform.
I also find out how she managed to grow her business whilst holding down a full-time job and what process she had to go through to decide to leave that world behind.
If you have been thinking about how to grow a passion business, like Sarah has (she has 6 dogs!) then this podcast will provide the inspiration that you need.

In this episode of Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners, I cover why I decided to move my membership content from Teachable to a website I have built myself with Memberpress. My decision to use Teachable in the beginning of my course content creation journey was the right one as it's a a ready-to-go platform, but as time has gone on, it's become apparent that I need to host my content on my own "land". I only started working with Memberpress last year after helping two members create their own membership websites and I was blown away with how self-serve the building process was. Ultimately, as Memberpress is a plugin it should be easy to install on your website and configure, and I certainly found it that easy, but you do need to get familiar with the best way to use it to restrict content.
It's taken me a lot longer than I thought it would to build my own Memberpress website. This has been due to spending far too much time researching how to host captioned video and also being distracted by being hacked back in Oct 2020. I have finally done it though and will be "soft" launching the new membership website to my members this week.
I took on a lot of the producing of the website so that I could learn how to teach the process and i am very excited to do this later in the year!

When done properly, Facebook Ads can be extremely valuable for driving traffic to your website. Aside from providing detailed ways to reach your ideal customers based on their behaviour on your website, it can also give you an audience based on engagement with your Facebook Page, and their age, gender, and location. Facebook knows so much about it’s users that it can detect if a user is more likely to click an ad, or view a video and will show an ad with the right objective. If you have website traffic and are not running retargeting ads of any kind (even despite the dreaded "ios14 update"), there’s a good chance you’re missing out on potential sales. In this episode I will cover the basics of how to get started with Facebook Ads and why I think it's an important staple of any small business marketing activity. This is ideal for you if you've dabbled before and decided "not for me". I'll explain what you might have done wrong and give you some tips and tricks to go away with and experiment again!
In 2021 it is more important than ever to ensure that you are tracking your website data to determine the success of the marketing activities that you are doing to drive traffic to it. If you’re not tracking this stuff then you’ll never really know what content resonates with your website users, and you’ll never really know if all that time and effort that you spent posting your blog every day on your social channels is even working. Using a free tool like Google Analytics can help. It's one of the best free tools for website owners. However, if the thought of looking at a dashboard of data puts you off even starting, then this episode is for you as I have outlined 10 ways you can use Google Analytics like a pro. If you can see what this tool is capable of, then hopefully you’ll head back to your website and immediately start looking at your data with a renewed love.
In this episode of Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners I talk with branding and colour expert Colette Stevenson about creativity, what make a great user experience when it comes to website and Clubhouse. Since childhood, Colette felt "creative" and despite starting her professional path as an educator, she eventually found her way back to her passion for graphic design. We cover what it means to be able to talk about design and creativity without a formal education in the subject (and I should know!) and cover how we both feel about modern website design trends. Expect to hear our opinions on color palettes, negative space, typography, menus, and the website alignment plus I show Colette on of the WORST website designs in the world (as voted for by Reddit users!) We also find time to chat about how we feel about Clubhouse, the newest social media app on the block and how we think our weekly Friday website review show is going on there. In this episode of my weekly podcast 'Online Marketing Basics for Busy Website Owners', I look at how you can get your website ready for Google's next big search algorithm update 'Page Experience' to ensure that you don't lose out on search rankings when it rolls out. Google have given website owner's a year's notice to get our act together and ensure that are our sites are ready for the update, so if they think we need that amount of time (pandemic included) then it's worth taking note. In Google's own words [please link 'own words with https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2020/11/timing-for-page-experience] they have said that "We believe that providing information about the quality of a web page's experience can be helpful to users in choosing the search result that they want to visit." So if your website is poorly designed and not a great user experience then you're going to have to review and update or risk losing your ranking in search. Google have also said that they will be including Core Web Vitals in how they determine the quality of a page too, so anything you can improve on mobile-friendliness, site speed and user interface will only help too. I'm still learning about and following the experts on what we can expect so plan to revisit this topic again before May, but I hope the episode helps yo figure out areas of your site you probably could do with focusing on and how to go about improving it.
01:57 Why I'm excited about this update 05:02 Why you need to be concerned about this update too if you already rank highly for certain keywords or key phrases 07:13 Mobile optimisation is still a really important part of website optimisation 08:43 I use https://crossbrowsertesting.com/ to test my sites on different mobile devices 09:42 Beware of of the pop-up 11:02 Consider reducing the amount of content on your page 13:12 Down with animated sliders! 15:30 Check your site on https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly 15:55 Speed is king! 18:00 Check your website load time with this tool: https://gtmetrix.com/ 18:39 Try using a caching tool. In this episode of the podcast, I explore the idea that you can build an email list without a website. You might be in the position of not having a website right now as you are transitioning from having an Etsy or Amazon store to creating a new website for yourself.
However, I often find that business owners in this position tend to put off having an email list because they think that they need a website or need everything to be "perfect" first.
I can assure you that you do not need everything to be perfect.
Email is still a very popular marketing tool for small businesses because email is still one of the most checked means of communication.
It's cost -effective too.. there's no physical cost and you can send as many emails as you want without an increase in cost usually.
It's also very effective at converting users with some industries reporting conversion rates as high as 10% from email campaigns.
I'm going to cover the ways that you get started with building an email list using some of the best free tools out there...and yes, you don't need a website to be able to do this.
[H2] How to Get Started
First up is why you need an email marketing tool.
To get started with growing an email list of people who have said that they want to hear from you, you'll need to sign-up to an email marketing tool.
It's the only way that you can manage your email subscribers in a way that protects their data.
Gone are the days of keeping people's emails on a bit of paper taped on the wall next to your next or in a spreadsheet that can easily be emailed to anyone.
Data laws mean that you need to ensure that the person who has decided to sign up to your email list can do so with the peace of mind that you won't hacked and their data shared without their permission.
Signing up to an email marketing tool like Mailchimp or ConvertKit means that you hand the data storing of your email list to them and they do it very well.
There's a big software company in Brighton called Pure360 who are an email marketing provider and I knew a few people who worked there. Security was so tight that they have to have the their thumbs scanned before they could enter the building.
The fines that you can face for mishandling user data in these GDPR times are massive, so it's best to get help from the professionals.
They'll even ensure that you are acting in a GDPR compliant way too.
One of the other big advantages of using an email marketing tool is that you can automate the process of sending emails.
In the old day it would be typical to send out 100 emails from an Outlook account using the BCC method.
It's amazing today that using automated email marketing we can set up rules and reports that tell us who didn't open those emails and trigger automations to send them emails based on their behavior.
[H2] What Email Tool to Pick
In my Membership, I recommend using tools like Mailchimp to get started. Mailchimp has been going years and although it doesn't have the most intuitive interface (it can be quite a hassle to find things in there).
As a tool it has been going a long time and they have amassed a lot of information about how their customers use the platform and how their users open and interact with email.
It's quite a good "beginner's" tool and connects with other platforms so that you can measure ecommerce data too.
It also has some good pre-built email templates and landing pages so you don't even need to design your email before you start.
I use ConvertKit which until recently was a paid tool. I love the simplicity of the interface and that it focuses you on writing rather than worrying about all of the pretty stuff.
In the past couple of months ConvertKit have also launched a free option, so you can start using it for up to the first 1000 subscribers.
In this episode I cover the very simple yet effective approach I use when writing content that ensures that your website is picked up by search engines for the keywords that you want to rank for. I cover how to do effective keyword research, what tools you can use to help you with this plus the way to ensure that you connect with the people searching for your products and services online. Even though the approach I talk about is simple, it's highly effective and I hope will give you the confidence to just start writing. 01:06 Episode intro and why SEO is going to be a big topic in the podcast this year 02:41 Why getting your website copy right is important for SEO 07:48 It's all about the user! 09:53 Competitor research and how to do it effectively 12:50 Why content readability is so important 15:09 How to research keywords if you don't know what you're searching for 17:04 How I researched keywords related to what my ideal customers were searching for 19:31 Why knowing the language that your ideal customer uses to find you is so important 20:54 Everything Google does is for the user 22:54 Good news for small businesses - you can rank high for keywords and keyphrases! 25:54 I repeat - create easy to read content!! 26:42 How many words should your pages have? 30:16 Remember to solve the problem that your ideal customer was searching for in the first place! 31:54 Summing up and outro Useful links: https://www.rev.com/ https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/ https://neilpatel.com/ubersuggest/ https://answerthepublic.com/ https://ahrefs.com/ https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/
