Kyle started his career as a grower in both aquaponic and hydroponic operations focusing on leafy greens and lettuce production. After joining the BrightFarms greenhouse team in 2015, he was promoted to Key Account Manager for the company, focusing on the sale of produce to supermarket chains and distribution channels. Kyle later took a position with Hort Americas as a Sales Manager focusing on substrates, fertilizers, and LED lighting sales to CEA growers. In 2019, Kyle partnered with CropTalk Media to create #KyleTalksAgTech, a podcast segment that focuses on CEA, vertical farms, and greenhouse technology as well as CEA leaders. Kyle also advises multiple CEA companies, associations and trade shows.

Christina M. Johnson is a plant biologist with her mind fixed in space. In April of 2010 she watched her plants blast into orbit on the Space Shuttle Discovery. She spent the next several years analyzing those samples for her PhD, where she learned about the impact of microgravity on the cellular structure and molecular functions in young plants. She is currently a fellow in the NASA Postdoctoral Program, working with Dr. Raymond Wheeler’s Space Crop Production team at Kennedy Space Center. Her project involves collaboration with the USDA to grow microgreens in simulated microgravity, with a goal of getting microgreen crops ready for spaceflight applications.

Jake attended Michigan State University where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in horticulture. He has nine years of experience across a variety of specialties including agriculture, agronomy, entomology, and viticulture. During his early career in Michigan he worked for Michigan State University, AgroLiquid, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Beginning in July 2018 he joined CropKing, Inc. based out of Lodi, Ohio. His experience with hydroponics, aquaculture, and aquaponics was instrumental to his desire to start Root 42 Harvests with his wife Katie.
While his professional career has focused around outdoor/indoor cultivation practices and nutrient & pest management, he has an undeniable passion for viticulture and enology. Over the past ten years, Jake has been involved in the establishment and/or management of at least one dozen vineyards in France, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio.
His international work and travel has enabled him to teach, learn from, and work with growers around the globe. Giving back, especially to the next generation of gardeners and farmers, has always been a central part of Jake’s career. He has personally created and taught at educational programs and seminars on various modern horticulture techniques across the United States in front of audiences ranging from school age kids to fellow industry professionals. Passing along the knowledge and experiences Jake has already amassed in his young career is a guiding principle of Root 42 Harvests.

Gene Giacomelli is a Professor in Biosystems Engineering for interdisciplinary education, research and outreach program for greenhouse and other advanced technology systems. He received a Ph.D. in Horticultural Engineering from Rutgers University in 1983. He also has a Master's degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of California-Davis and two bachelor's degrees in Horticultural Science and Biological and Agricultural Engineering from Rutgers University. Here at the University of Arizona he teaches Controlled Environment Systems which is an introduction to the technical aspects of greenhouse design, environmental control, nutrient delivery systems, hydroponic crop production, intensive field production systems, and post-harvest handling and storage of crops. His research interests include controlled environment plant productions systems [greenhouse and growth chamber] research, design, development and applications, with emphases on: crop production systems, nutrient delivery systems, environmental control, mechanization, and labor productivity.

Murat Kacira is a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and also a faculty member in Controlled Environment Agriculture Center program at The University of Arizona. He received his B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering in Cukurova University in Turkey and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering from The Ohio State University. He has been active in teaching and research related to controlled environment agriculture (CEA) for the past twenty years with working experiences in academia and research institutions in the Unites States, Turkey, and Japan. His research involves in the area of greenhouse and plant energy balance studies, computer vision guided autonomous plant health and growth monitoring systems, modeling and simulation of aerodynamics in CEA systems, photovoltaics integrated greenhouse systems, automation and control in algae production systems by novel sensors and control strategy applications. Kacira has given lectures regularly at greenhouse crop production and engineering short courses and invited lectures both at the national and international scientific meetings and conferences. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level engineering courses at The University of Arizona. He is a member of American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). He serves as Chair of Commission Horticultural Engineering under ISHS.

In this Podcast Joe and Nick interview Dr. Gary Stutte about growing food in space.
During the past ten years, Dr. Gary Stutte has worked at Kennedy Space Center in Dynamac's plant Research Group to determine the feasibility of using plants as bioregenerative life support systems for long duration space missions.
Dr. Stutte is the principal investigator for several spaceflight experiments designed to grow plants in microgravity. One of these is the Photosynthesis Experiment System Testing Operation (PESTO) experiment, the first plant science experiment to be conducted aboard the International Space Station once it is delivered by the crew of STS-110.
Designed by KSC, the PESTO experiment will study whether wheat will produce oxygen through photosynthesis and purify water through transpiration at the same rates as on Earth. The experiment could have a major impact on plans for future long-duration spaceflight, and will be followed by additional experiments aboard ISS.
Although he was born in Oklahoma, Dr. Stutte considers Fayetteville, Arkansas his home. He attended the University of Arkansas for two years in the Horticultural Food Sciences Program, finishing his BS degree in Biology at the Oklahoma State University. Dr. Stutte has a Masters Degree in Horticulture for the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of California, Davis.

CO2 from a gas tank and water from the facility source are plugged into the Aqueous CO2 Infusion System, which comes as an in-situ system or can be integrated into booms. The CO2 completely dissolves in the water creating a saturated aqueous CO2 solution.
The aqueous CO2 solution is targeted directly on to the plant's leaves by misting micro droplets that create an aqueous CO2 film on leaf's surface. This film isolates the leaf surface from the atmosphere and creates a diffusion gradient that favors the transport of CO2 into the leaf and other gasses out of the leaf.
The carbon is used by the plant for photosynthesis to grow and the oxygen is given off to the atmosphere.
