The Brookmans also share some helpful tips on how churches can better serve families affected by disability.
“You guys are so strong!” Many of us who have lived with the constant challenges of a child requiring special attention have heard this or other similar sentiments from others. It is, of course, well intended to be a means of encouragement. However, we know ourselves. We know the challenges. We know the weeping, helplessness, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and host of other weaknesses we face on a daily basis. Far from being “strong,” we sense deep weakness. For the Christian, however, our weakness does not define us, and it is certainly not designed to cripple us.
My son, Haddon, has Epilepsy. He has an SCN1A gene mutation and Dravet syndrome. This diagnosis is difficult, as it is a drug-resistant form of epilepsy. That is not to say that we have not seen benefits from medication. We in fact have. In part, what seizure-control Haddon has experienced has allowed him to flourish developmentally, cognitively and otherwise. If you knew nothing of his epilepsy, you would assume Haddon was a typical three-year-old “punk” (a word I have chosen accurately and affectionately).
Haddon had his first seizure at 4 months old. He is now three and a half. During our journey, Haddon has had highs and lows. His greatest seizure-free stretch was 155 days! Since then, however, we have not experienced such a streak.
Currently, Haddon is in a significant “low.” As I write, Haddon has been experiencing an average of 10-12 drop seizures per day over the past two weeks. Even before beginning this very paragraph, Haddon had a seizure. These two weeks have resulted in hospitalizations, a scramble for new medication, and a loss of speech on Haddon’s part. The latter has weighed on us in particular. We are thankful to have known his voice. We know there are so many who have never heard their child’s voice, who perhaps never will. We can only empathize in part. We are hopeful, as seizure-control is gained, that Haddon will be able to recover those skills.
Of course, there is much more to our story. There is always more to the story for us who suffer. And it is in those hidden details where weakness is felt most.
What, then, is the Christian to think concerning weakness? Has God abandoned us to our weakness? Will our weakness crush us under despairing weight? Crippling us by continual blows? What “goods” could come from such good-less sufferings?
Christian, in the strangest of mysteries, your weakness is displaying the strong glory of God. God has not abandoned you, nor can God abandon you. You have been inseparably united with Christ by faith, adopted as a son or daughter of the Father, sealed and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Triune God is for you, and never against you. And this same God is working all things together for your ultimate good: to be conformed into the image and likeness of Jesus Himself.
Will your weakness crush or cripple? Will your weakness finally separate you from the favorable love of God? Nothing, dear Saint, in death or life, can separate you from His care. And no weakness of yours could even be a hiccup in God’s good purpose to make you new and whole in Christ.
What “goods” could come from such good-less sufferings? Make no mistake, suffering and weakness are not good. But your God is. God is redeeming all things. Jesus Himself became our Savior by means of profound suffering and the result of His suffering and resurrection is our greatest and eternal good. If God worked such immeasurable good by the suffering of His Son, then it is not too difficult for Him to work many goods in your weakness and sufferings. To be sure, as the hymn goes, “Christ leads me through no darker rooms than He went through before.”
So no, brother or sister, you are not strong. But your weakness is being redeemed. For when you are weak, and in the midst of your weakest moments, Christ is strong in you and for you. Christ Himself is your strength. Every moment, you are being upheld by His “righteous, omnipotent hand.” So boast in your weakness and share your story with others. Boast in your weakness, and you will know your Strength.

In this episode, Ethan and Michaela talk with Pastor Kim Kira about the pastor’s role when it comes to special needs ministry within the church. Kim Kira is a pastor at Lighthouse Community Church in Torrance, California, where their church has served families with special needs for about eight years.
